Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

while this album does contain a large quantity of good songs, it's still not as well written or exciting as "Encendedor"..and isn't as adventurous as "Against the Stars". my least favorite of the three, but still a fairly good album.

The band at their peak.......2002-10-21

In my humble opinion Ruby Red stands as the finest work produced by this fine band. Why ? The songs are excellent, and delivered with all the grit, spit, verve and energy that the band were famous for delivering.

It's more polished than Encendedor, and more of a true, 'live' Dambuilders album than Against the Stars, and hence, in my opinion, the disc that delivers the sound of a band at the height of their talents.

A Treasure Trove.......2002-02-02

Occassionally in life something unexpected yet wonderful occurs. Finding the music on this CD was one of those events for me. I never heard of Jessica Ruby Simpson aka Jessica Radcliff until I stumbled, by accident, upon Band of Angels. Her voice, her phrasing, her poetry, her musicality and absolute originality place her well beyond most of her comtempories of the same genre. All of the musicians on this CD are amazing. I found a treasure when I stumbled upon this CD.

Unpolished Beauty.......1999-10-22

I have never been well-educated about folk music, but this CD makes me want to change that. The female vocalist has a husky, swallowed voice that, at first, put me off. As I continued to listen, however, her unpolished voice added an approachable quality to the music. The over-all tone of the CD is mellow and nostalgic. I get a very "overcast autumn afternoon" feeling when I listen. The social-conciousness messages and accoustic arrangements seem standard for the genre. The versatility of the group, though, was surprising. From playful and child-like to tearful and tired, from mythological history to photo journalism (and covering at least two languages), the songs are anything but cookie-cutter. In fact, I reserve the fifth star simply because I don't know a lot about this type of music, so I have no strong basis for comparison.

Great songs, inaccurate packaging.......2005-05-06

The music merits 5 stars and are well worth having. (Listen carefully to the lyrics of "Ain't That A Mess.") That being said, there are major mistakes and omissions in song identification of which you need to be aware before purchasing:

-The first song is incorrectly attributed to Connie McLean's Rhythm Blues when it is actually Kokomo Arnold;
-Speckled Red's "Dirty Dozens" is not on this CD, so all but the last of the titles/artists need to shift up one;
-Song 24 is "Stew Meat Blues" by Lucille Bogan, and is not credited anywhere on the CD.

The quality of the voice and the interesting mix of many of the well-known folk songs on this album make it a wonderful addition to any collection for both young and old sing-a-long fans.

America the Beautiful and Amazing Grace will be valued by all listeners.

Grandparents will want two copies, one for the grandchild and one for themselves to play when the grandchild visits. I actually have a tape in each car and a CD in the house. They all continue to be played by young and old.

Wonderful fun for the 3 to 7-year-old crowd........2000-01-02

My 6-year old daughter couldn't get enough of these songs! She's humming and singing the tunes all day. The arrangements are basically traditional, but with enough variation to make them very interesting for adults, too. Here is one delightful album you won't mind your child playing over and over.

What a tremendous clear and animated voice; great bouncy new arrangements. The songs are all parts of our cultural and every kid should know them. Highly recommended.
