Album Description
Soon after Bobby returned to RCA in 1972, he recorded an entire LP of songs by the legendary songwriter, cartoonist and humorist Shel Silverstein. The album yielded three hits, Daddy What If, Marie Laveau (Bobby's first ever #1 hit) and The Winner. Ten other songs feature Silverstein's weird and often ironic twist on the country song. This is regarded by many as Bobby's best-ever album!

Classic Bobby Bare. The best in funny and touching stories. Combines both humor and philosophy, often in the same song.

Bobby Bare hits a homer!.......2002-10-16
This was the first album I ever bought, at the age of 12, with some money I had saved by mowning lawns. I listened to it for years until I wore the vinyl record out. "The Winner" and "Marie Leveaux" could be heard on the radio at the time but the real beauty of the album, I think, is the seldom-heard "Roaslie's Good Eats Cafe" and "In the Hills of Shiloh." Today, my wife uses "Rosalie's" to teach her 12th grade English students about descriptive writing. My two boys and I giggle at the "Mermaid", "Paul", "Sure Hit Songwriters Pen", and all the other great ones. Thanks Bobby & Shel for this artistic collaboration -- and for thirty years (and counting) of enjoyment.
An artists artist........2002-03-11
Many of these reviews are good but also erroneous. This is probably the best theme album of all time in any genre. But it was NOT the first theme album in country music. That distinction belongs to Johnny Cash in the early sixties. To appreciate ones music one does not have to denegrate someone elses music or contribution, or to have novice listeners make silly statements without them having the scope to be in the know. Johnny Cash says Bare is his favorite, he also was known as Jennings favorite. He also should be given more credit for the sweeping changes in the artist as being in control of their music.Far before Waylon and Willie , Bare learned from Cash how to rule his music from Nashville producers. Listen and enjoy . They are all favorites - but the last The Winner is a classic!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of any genre. Thanks Mr. Bare for your lifes music. Brad Stender.

Album Description
UK 3-CD set. Charley Pride was the first African-American country superstar, and these days it's hard to believe that his earliest records, like his 1965 debut 'Snakes Crawl At Night', (written by Mel Tillis) were originally released without his picture on the 45 sleeve. By 1967 and 'Just Between You And Me', however, country fans knew him and embraced him. This compilation, which includes those two songs, features 29 Number One country hits, each sung by Pride in his unmistakable twangy baritone. 50 tracks in total. BMG. 2006.
Album Details
Smooth-tonsilled Country Singer who Clocked Up an Amazing 67 Hits on the Us Country Charts During the '70s Including 29 Number Ones.
Customer Reviews:
The forgotten country superstar.......2005-03-11
This compilation originally appeared in Australia, where it was titled Legendary. Now released in Britain, it has a slightly different title (Legends) and different packaging, but the same music.
Charley Pride had nearly thirty number one hits on the American country charts, as well as many other big hits, yet his music his poorly represented on CD in comparison with much less successful singers. This Australian set is the most comprehensive collection available. It would seem that Charley is better remembered in Britain and Australia than in his homeland. For those who do remember, there is much pleasure to be had from the fifty tracks here. The collection covers the whole span of his years at RCA from the sixties to the eighties.
Everybody has his or her own favorites. Crystal chandeliers (the final track here) was not released as a single in America, but it has become his most famous song elsewhere. The other tracks will be familiar to Americans and include Mississippi cotton picking delta town, All I have to offer you is me, Just between you and me, Is anybody going to San Antone?, Kiss an angel good morning, I'm just me, Does my ring hurt your finger? and Snakes crawl at night.
With songs like these, how is it that there seems to be so little interest in Charley's music compared to some of his contemporaries? I can't answer that, but it is likely that this will remain the strongest collection of Charley's music on CD although the American double CD (Anthology) is also an excellent collection.

Customer Reviews:
Thank you.......2002-08-23
My thanks to the recording company for releasing this RCA series of country greats.
I've adored John Hartford's music since I was small, watching Glen Campbell on TV. The samples of his work contained in this greatest compositions CD are wonderful. No CD will please everyone completely. I wish that Front Porch was replaced by Left-Handed Woman, but that's just me. Still, it's refreshing to be able to listen to John Hartford once again.
Excellent (But Brief) Intro to Hartford's Formative Years.......2002-04-20
John Hartford recorded five albums for RCA from 1967 through 1970 prior to 1971's classic "Aereo-Plain." This "Country Legends" release samples these long out-of-print albums (although nothing is included from 1970's "Iron Mountain Depot"). However, if you're unfamiliar with Hartford's pre-"Aereo-Plain" material, this material may come as something of a surprise.
As Hartford explains in the liner notes, while RCA saw him as their version of Bob Dylan, RCA's Nashville operations vice president Chet Atkins saw him as their Roger Miller. Hartford also expressed some concern about his difficulty in convincing RCA to allow him to hire bluegrass musicians for sessions.
Fortunately, most of the songs selected for this release are those where Hartford is backed by a limited number of musicians--although the trumpet flourishes on "I'm Still Here" are distracting.
Highlights include his original version of "Gentle on My Mind" (which stalled at No. 60 on the country charts), "California Earthquake," "(Good Old Electric) Washing Machine (Circa 1943)" and "Mouth to Mouth Resuscitation"--the latter two showing the kind of quirky humor that would be one of Hartford's trademarks throughout his career. My only complain is that with a running time of 40:15, Buddha could have tacked on another dozen songs. At any rate, at present, this is the only opportunity listeners have to hear any of Hartford's music from his formative years. RECOMMENDED
It's about time.......2002-04-16
Where have these recordings been? I only hope RCA reissues his original LP's on CD. I've owned Gentle On My Mind since I was a kid, and I've never tired of it. All but a few of the songs from that LP are included here. There's humor and excellent musicianship. The sound quality is very good.
About time this stuff saw the light of day!.......2001-10-22
John Hartford's RCA albums were pulled from the catalogue when he jumped to Warner in 1971. This Buddha compilation includes selections from the first four releases, plus the two new tracks on the best-of album "Gentle On My Mind", all recorded and produced in Nashville by Felton Jarvis.
John's early songs were what he called "Word Movies" (a concept not all that distant from Ken Nordine's "Word Jazz") and these songs clearly show why. For those who only know John from his one-man show days, or from Aereo Plain (incl. "Boogie"), this is a real treasure. You can hear why Chuck Glaser hired the youngish John Harford (without the "t") to write for the family studio, and why they marched him up to Chet Atkins at RCA, and why Chet signed him (it was he who added the "t" to John's name).
Just hearing the original Gentle On My Mind is worth the price of this.
These tracks were remastered from the original mix tapes and sound beautiful. Dave Samuelson and Rich Kienzle did a wonderful job compiling session and track info from the ledger sheets - Jerry Reed playing guitar?! - and their liner notes drawn from conversations with John and interviews from magazines.
If you've ever liked John Hartford's material, I say you owe it to yourself to hear his early works. Enjoy.
...
Just What I Wanted!.......2001-10-20
I've been trying to get some of John Hartford's early works for quite some time. The problem is that there are a bunch of albums that you just can't get because they've never been released on CD and you can't get the albums. I even went to the extent of searching through the album racks at antique stores.
Well this was what I was looking for (but sure could use MORE). It's a collection of John's early works from the mid to late sixties. And after my second listen I have to say that I know it will be one of my favorites.
Some of the songs should be familiar. "Gentle on My Mind" has been recorded on several of his albums, and "Washing Machine", "I'm Still Here" and "I Would Not Be Here" are also on other CDs. But the rest are ones that I've never heard before and they are classic John Hartford with his unique style and his never-ending experimental spirit.
A lot of these songs have sounds that are dated but that doesn't mean that it's bad. I get a genuine feel for the times when John Hartford was part of the Glenn Campbell Good Time Hour (hey, that's another good idea - how about some of that stuff?) when I listen to these songs. And if you listen close you can hear the beginnings of John's style that peaks in his great release of Aereo-Plain that was first released in 1971.

Webb Pierce :Country Honky Tonk at its Best !!!.......2007-01-11
When the compliation album, "Caught in the Webb" came out - it was a tribute by current country artists to a legend of honky tonk music. This is a superlative two disc collection by the original master. I know many will want this ultimate collection(just one serious omission here - his classic hit, "Honky Tonk Song"). I know all country music lovers will enjoy this set from one of the great legends of honky tonk. His music made us all richer.

Album Description
Legends is a 3 CD set comprised of 50 total tracks. If any one performer personified the outlaw country movement of the '70s, it was Waylon Jennings. Though he had been a professional musician since the late '50s, it wasn't until the '70s that Waylon, with his imposing baritone and stripped-down, updated honky-tonk, became a superstar. Jennings rejected the conventions of Nashville, refusing to record with the industry's legions of studio musicians and insisting that his music never resemble the string-laden, pop-inflected sounds that were coming out of Nashville in the '60s and '70s. Many artists, including Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, followed Waylon's anti-Nashville stance and eventually the whole outlaw movement, so-named because of the artists' ragged, maverick image and their independence from Nashville became one of the most significant country forces of the '70s, helping the genre adhere to its hardcore honky-tonk roots. BMG. 2006.
