It may be too cynical to assume Hybrid Theory changed its name to Linkin Park in order to appear right next to Limp Bizkit in your local record bin. But rock-rap workouts like "One Step Closer" and "Papercut" do make Linkin Park a comfortable fit with Fred Durst and his ilk. Producer Don Gilmore (Pearl Jam, Lit, Eve 6) and twin vocal threats Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda serve up industrial-strength rap and rock melodicism with equal aplomb on this woulda-been-self-titled debut effort. "Points of Authority" aims to sound like Trent Reznor wanking it up with Lars and company, whereas guitarist Brad Delson's Edge-y harmonics help "In the End" and "Pushing Me Away" evoke a dark romanticism akin to A Perfect Circle. Curiously, the band gets by with no bass player, while sample-happy DJ Joseph Hahn's step into the spotlight on the instrumental "Cure for the Itch" suggests a potential for eclecticism that could help Linkin Park outlive its seemingly transient genre. --Bill Forman

BEST.ALBUM.EVER........2007-06-19
This is one of those albums that is almost impossible to outdo. Every song is brilliant. Meteora and Minutes To Midnight were fantastic, but I find myself grabbing this one whenever I'm craving LP. I rank this #1 in my HUGE music collection.
Great CD.......2007-06-16
If you like Linkin Park you will enjoy this CD because it rocks!!!
Good music, great hooks, different style. .......2007-05-25
Linkin Park is not metal. They are considered nu-metal or maybe alternative metal, but don't expect balls-out metal. There is rapping, lots of melody, scratching, and some hip-hop elements combined with a hard-edged rock sensibility. They have a very polished, distinguishable sound that pours out of any sound system with gusto. I usually enjoy heavier music, such as Lamb of God and Mastodon, but I really keep my mind open to other styles as well. LP is just too good to ignore. They have a knack for writing hit songs and yet it doesn't seem like they are trying too hard. When I listen to heavy music, there has to be great riffs, vocals, and hooks. If any of those three things is missing, I shelve it. LP has all three and this was one of the best cds of 2000. It took awhile to convert me, but I consider them to be one of the better bands to come out of the nu-metal scene. The entire cd is great, no filler. Lots of hit songs. "Papercut", "One Step Closer", "Crawling", "In the End" and "Points of Authority".
My very fave CD.......2007-04-07
I didn't buy this CD when it first came out. I went to basic military training and my brother bought this CD for me as a gift. I did not usually listen to rock but mostly R&B at the time so I thought I wouldn't like it. But I had to live in the dorms while I did some more trainng and my roommate would always talk on the phone at 3 in the morning so I would play this CD in my CD player with the headphones on to get me to sleep. It got to the point where I would play it every night regardless if my roommate was on the phone or not. Every song on here is classic and I love how it flows. I think that LP was the first in coming out with this new sound and I think that they set the bar for all other groups out there. I love their creativity and I have every single one of their CDs. Even the remakes. Yes, I am an avid fan. I just hate how they take so long to come out with a new CD. I am always craving more when I hear a new LP CD. All in all, if you are not wanting to hear the mainstream types of music they play on MTV over and over, try this CD. Its awesome!
yeh i gave it 5 stars.......2007-04-02
I'll be honest, when I first heard about this album and linkin park I thought...ugh, what crap. But that is with only knowing about the first single they put out and not listening to the whole album.
so lets get it outta the way, linkin park is a pre fab, pretty much no talent, nu metal, rap rock type of band. Plus i really dont like the people in the band either..
but damn this album is actually really good. Every song flows really well. Whether they wrote these songs or not, no matter how much computer processing was needed to make that lead singer guy somewhat sound in key...I don't care, what's on this album sounds good...so good that it is one of my favorite albums of all time.
When I listen to this album I just listen to the music without letting what I know about the band bother me or irk my opinion at all.
That's the way this album needs to be heard, otherwise you'll be so bothered by the fact that you like it, you just might break the cd.

From her still in hollywood until the queens first solo with james at her side. I have lived my life with blonde . johnette is an amazing angel among us! live life baby and give us more!
OUCH!!!.......2007-06-17
bare bones... almost too real.
I love you Johnette... (long time fan).
This CD is awesome.......2007-06-15
I have been a huge fan of all of Johnette's work for years. This album is defiantly not a disappointment. I would really would suggest this to anyone who likes music. It's very unique sounding but in the best way possible!
Raw and open, surprising!!.......2007-06-10
Been a fan of the band Concrete Blonde and I've always checked out
their music over the years. I found this on Amazon and went to her website
to listen to the complete tracks and I've been really surprised at just
how amazing this collection is. The sound, vocals, writing all have
an edge you don't hear anymore so it stands out. Its different than
the Concrete Blonde days but you can't deny its got some great melodies
and off the wall vocal treaments and wide open raw lyrics. It rocks hard
in places and the acoustic guitar weaves its way around some great grooves. This is one of the best offerings this year so far and it would
be nice to see Johnette and these songs out on the road. so many favorites
but I do love the songs "My Diane", and the Coldplay cover "The Scientist",
"Amazing", the first single, & "Crazy Tonight", "Everthing for everyone".
Scarred.......2007-06-07
An insanely amazing album. "Crazy Tonight" and "Everything For Everyone" are knockouts! Not that the other songs pale in comparison. It is one of the most satisfying albums I've come across in a long time. It's so honest, and raw, and real. Her voice alone is worth the money.

Desert Island Disc!.......2007-06-20
This sacd is positively stunning. I am young. I was raised on gizmos, gadgets and hi-tech this and that...and for the life of me I can't understand how these engineers back in the 50's and 60's produced such astoundingly detailed recordings. With two or three mics for the hall and some tube equipment and wham...there you have it...a recording of impressively powerful pieces of music with enough separation and detail within the mix to keep the listener busy for hours and hours on end. That and the emotional wallop packed by this recording is second to none. Even if you have copies aplenty of Pictures, or Night on..., such as I do myself, please do not hesitate to pick up this recording as it is worth every dime. If you are looking for an interesting counterpoint to Reiner's reading of Pictures or Night pick of Jose Serebrier's recording on Naxos.
Great way to exercise.......2007-06-13
Such great music. Exercise and listening
to this one is a great combination.
Time seems to fly by and before you know
it. Times up!
Wow!.......2007-04-02
How can something older than me sound so good? The recording is top notch. Dont be fooled into thinking it is "just stereo", the ambience of symphony hall comes thru as though it were recorded in surround. Exquisite detail and perfect tempo. Timpani has realistic impact. And all the other music with Pictures makes this a real bargain!
Strauss and Mussorgsky.......2007-03-24
They sound good, without the 'edge' often associated with CDs. CDs are a Fourier Transform of the analog source - that is to say a subset of it.
Hybrid SACD Mussorgsky: Pirctures at an Exhibition, Night on Bald Mountain.......2007-01-14
Great value. Great performances. On my krell sacd player, I found small differences between the SACD layer and the regular. The recordings are outstanding. Consider the price and that this is a 2 lp set, this is a deal.

a good collection of classical music........2007-01-10
If you enjoy piano music, you should have this CD.
As Good As It Gets.......2006-03-24
Rubinstein was in his prime when these versions of the Chopin Ballades and Scherzos were recorded in 1959. Curiously, although this was his third version of the Scherzos, he had never before recorded the Ballades.
Rubinstein was temperamentally well suited to these works, moreso than in the Mazurkas and Preludes. The narrative aspect of the Ballades suited his intuitive sense of structure well. At this point in his career, Rubinstein had known these pieces for six decades. It is no wonder, therefore, that he performs them more convincingly than, say, Kissin does on his recent recording.
The Scherzos are outright virtuoso works. Rubinstein would occasionally perform all four in concert, back-to-back. Any other pianist would have been exhasted by the effort. Not Rubinstein, who posessed a seemingly inexaustable reserve of energy. The pianist is just as on top of these pieces, technically, as any of his colleagues, and much more attuned to them musically.
The sound, made from original three channel tapes produced by RCA's legendary Jack Pfeiffer, is spectacular in this new SACD edition--sounding every bit as lifelike as the best of today's digital recordings.
This is the one to get!
Great performances and sound.......2004-11-28
Highly recommended. Rubinstein's performances of the Ballades are lyrical, and the Scherzos exciting. The difference with previous issues is the SACD sound, which adds just that much more realism, the sense that the sound is "truer." A wonderful disc both artistically and sonically.

Album Description
chasing the ghost is haunting and captivating, with an essence that cuts to the core. Its hypnotic lull of orchestrated sounds and heartfelt emotion reveal a journey reaching deep into the psyche that will grab you and not let go. Recognized as innovators in sound, Collide prefer to cut their own path. This album, although decidedly different from their previous CDs, once again treads on new ground, combining new elements into a powerful whole.
Customer Reviews:
I am impressed........2007-07-04
Rarely in the darkwave genre do I find anybody that I consider to be interresting, however this time around, I'm satisfied. Collide is a collition of trip hop and goth that sounds like a terrible idea, but actually works out quite well. Collide will trip you out big time!
OKAY BUT NOT STELLAR.......2007-05-18
I like songs 1, 2, 7 and the band's dance remake of White Rabbit. kaRin's voice is hauntingly similar to Kate Bush; although real heavy on the Vo-Coder. Some of the songs, instead of being entrancing tend to drone on and none of the tracks pop out as a really strong single. However, I am not sorry I bought the cd and would recommend it to others because it's easy on the ears (very melodic).
Music for the Witching Hour.......2007-04-13
This album is so darkly ethereal and richly textured that I yearn for the poet's ability to paint a vivid word picture of its seductive sound. Sadly, I am not the world reknown poet any review of this album demands, but simply your average music lover, and after musing over it so long my brain cramps, the best I can come up with is something like. "Hey, what do you get when you cross a goth chick with a computer geek?" So you will just have to use your imagination.
Imagine the perfect song for a lovesick vampire. Imagine what moonlight peeking through gathering stormclouds sounds like. Imagine a Hammer horror movie with a Moby soundtrack. Imagine the distant music that haunts the dreams of some half-mad hero from an H.P. Lovecraft story. Imagine the perfect CD for your date with that fair-skinned lovely with the black lipstick and fingernail polish.
Imagine closing your eyes and feeling the sound sweep over you, setting you hair on end and your soul on fire.
Then stop imagining it and order this CD. Wait for a dark and stormy night and slip it in. Set your imagination free on midnite wings...
Chasing the Ghost : one of Collide's best!.......2007-04-13
I highly recommend this Cd to anyone who loves to be swept away in imagination. I find all of Collide's music highly moving and inspiring, and Chasing the Ghost is one that truly grabs you and carries you away. I can't say enough about this cd really.. but it's definitely one of my all-time favorite cds. Dark and alluring.... perfection!
Mesmerizingly Hard!!.......2007-04-12
This album is definitely a haunting series of songs!! The bands ability to add that certain haunting nature to Karin's voice is, in my experience, rare!! Defintely a must have for your hard core gothic/industrial/electronica collection!!!

This is a classic recording of these two works, led with grand authority by Fritz Reiner. The Chicago's brass and wind section play gloriously throughout, and the final movement of Scheherazade (we learn from the original producer [1960] in an accompanying essay) was recorded in one take--an almost unheard-of feat. This fast movement is taken at breakneck speed, with no loss of clarity or power, with the strings in the hands of magicians. Stravinsky's Nightingale has never sounded so exotic, so bristling over with color, since this 1956(!) recording under Reiner, and the wonderful surprise with this new release of old material is the revamped sound: the original "Living Stereo" was a fantastic breakthrough in recording, and this new SACD format has returned the spatial relationships to something so "real" that it comes as close as I've ever heard to a true concert hall experience. Simply glorious. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Scheherazade.......2007-07-08
This specific performanace of this album is excellent. The musical content is excellent and is a real crowd pleaser that anyone would want to listen to frequently. The technical recording (Hybrid SACD) is muddy when played back on ordinary equipment. That is the loudest passages are truncated (i.e. made quieter) and the softest passes are truncaded (i.e. made louder). This assessment is made in comparision to my original vinyl LP of this same recording. Presumably to get the best audio from the CD recording you will need SACD playback equipment. If you don't have a decent copy of vinyl version I would highly recommend this CD.
Definitive SACD of Scheherazade - Outstanding!!!!.......2007-02-18
This multichannel SACD is recorded in the front 3 channels only, as this is what the technicians and their top notch analog equipment recorded more than 40 years ago. At that time the Chicago Symphony and conductor Fritz Reiner were both at the top of their game, and this recording has not been equalled to this day. Absolutely puts the listener in the middle of the ninth or tenth row, and provides the clean dynamic sound of the best recordings made today! This is the wonderful Scheherazade I grew up with, but much better because of SACD technology and my current audio system.
best recording I could find.......2007-01-19
I heard Scheherazade live with the NY Phil. The power of that full orchestra in Russian forte was something, but even more memorable was the beautiful violin played by the concert master. This recording manages to balance the two opposites sonically. Mr Bill

"The Song of the Nightingale" is not my favorite Stravinsky...it just doesn't work that well as a piece of music, especially when compared to the opera original. But Reiner makes it work somehow: the pacing is terrific and the playing as usual is razor-sharp. "Scheherazade" may be pretty tired by now but when you hear this performance it comes to life again and you realize why it has been such a popular score. Sure there are other ways to play it but this one is sensational...and the last movement was done in a single take!
Amazing Sound.......2006-09-19
Best Scheherazade I ever heard. The performace was exciting and touching. The SACD provides so much details and dynamics of the recording that it makes me really feel that I was there.

After a string of hits across the first half of the nineties, the Gin Blossoms disbanded by the decade's end. With the appearance of a greatest hits collection continuing to keep their songs alive, the band did a reunion show that led to a full fledged tour in 2002. Returning to the studio with a dozen new songs, Major Lodge Victory is their first new album in ten years. It's full of guitar hooks wedded to emotionally evocative lyrics ("I promise I won't hurt you anymore" "Mama said your life wouldn't be too easy, that's about the only thing she said at all"), most songs being by band founder Jesse Valenzuela. Robin Wilson's lightly vibratoed vocals have an evocative presence that call to mind Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield anyone?). The band manages to be at once crisp and powerful, occasionally finding grooves to settle into, but never straying far from the dramatic needs of each song. --David Greenberger

Another Victory for the Gin Blossoms!!.......2007-06-21
After ten years of hiatus, the Gin Blossoms return with a new album and the guys do not skip a beat. The Gins have returned and stayed true to their form. The new album picks up right where Congratualtions left off and is simply a home run. The new cd presents many ctachy pwer po tracks such as Long Time Gone, Come On Hard, Super Girl, Learning the Hard Way, and The End of the World. Williams and Vennezula have really produced a nice album and its great to see the guyz back together. Hopefully there is still more albums to come from the Gins in the near future!
Great Comeback.......2007-06-20
Welcome back the Blossoms! This is a reunion album, but the band really doesn't explore any new territory here. It's basically the next Gin Blossoms album, albeit after many (too many) years and a few other musical experiments (Gas Giants to name one.)
Recommended for power pop fans and anyone who remembers the Gin Blossoms heyday.
Almost as good as their first.......2007-05-13
This is a great band and they still rock. This cd is great.
Great album- great band.......2007-04-19
Definately give this album a try- especially with summer approaching. This is pure roll-down-your-windows and crank out feel-good music while driving down the interstate. Although it not- surpringly lacks hits, you won't be disappointed.

VICTORY!.......2007-04-15
a victorious return.... as a fan from the ep "up and crumbling" a "few" years? back it is awesome to hear the "gbs" rock again. great melodies and lyrics, as from the start of their career. also their sound remains intact, a tribute to their lost band member indeed! every tune begs for another listen... so after a break it's all good! would love to see a tour!

Customer Reviews:
The young Fischer has a definite "wow" factor.......2007-03-11
Even a jaded listener would blink twice at this recording, which showcases the German violin prodigy Julia Fischer. She's quite a dynamic player, and although lightning-fingered virtuosos aren't that rare nowadays, Fischer also possesses real charisma. She exudes confidence in every bar, and besides her gorgeous tone, she has an uncanny ability to phrase for someone so young. In all three works here she's able to shift effortlessly from Khachaturian's brash, semi-kitschy Soviet fireworks to Prokofiev's lyrico-ironic modernism and finally Glazunov's plush-velvet sentimentality. Only the Prokofiev concerto comes close to being a masterpiece, but you'd never know that from Fischer's complete dedication to each one.
PentaTone's remarkably vivid sonics make a big impression--this company has been in the forefront of SACD sound for a while--bringing Fischer's violin to life quite remarkably. Even better is Yakov Kreizberg's conducting of the exuberant Russian National Orch. His style is extroverted, like Gergiev's, with unihibited Russian vitality. I'm on the verge of gushing, but how can one help it when confronted by such a brilliant all-around production?
THE FUTURE IS IN GOOD HANDS.......2007-01-03
The very young Violinist Julia Fischer demonstrates in this recording that (to me) the future for the performance of masterpieces of so-called classical music is very bright indeed. Julia gives very sensitive, virtuosic, and beautiful in tone performances of these Russian concertos for the violin. She is rhythmically astute in the Khachaturian concerto and very gorgeous in tone in the overtly romantic Galazunov concerto. Likewise, the Prokofiev's First Violin Concerto is given a finally nuanced performance with Yukov Kreizberg leading the Russian National Orchestra splendidly.
I heard Ms. Fischer in Aspen, Colorado in the summer of 2006 and was very impressed with her; this recording certainly confirms that most favorable impression.
If you want to hear some great violin playing, buy this disc.
By the way, the recorded sound is great-- very full and rich!
An Impressive Début Disc.......2006-07-26
Although this is not the young Julia Fischer's first recording, it is the first she has done in SACD format on the PentaTone label with whom she has signed as an exclusive artist. The CD came out in late 2004, if I'm not mistaken, and she has since released the Bach Partitas and Sonatas, and most recently a disc of Mozart Violin Concerti. I gave a rave to the latter here at Amazon. I had not heard this début disc until recently and was, I will admit, a little concerned that she might be too 'classical' a violinist to make the most of these mostly extrovert Russian concerti. I was wrong to have any hesitation; she plays them with verve, wit, style and plenty of extroversion where needed. But she also brings to them an inwardness -- particularly in the Prokofiev First, which certainly has a veil of mystery about it -- that makes them seem fresh.
In recent times the Khachaturian Concerto has to some extent fallen from favor. When I was a youth it was one of the big modern Russian concerti along with Prokofiev 2 and, late in the 1950s, the Shostakovich 1, and one heard it in concert with some regularity. Happily there has been a bit of a revival lately, in spite of the tendency of some critics and programmers to think it is rather lightweight and too much of a populist work. Whatever the drawbacks it might have, it is an extremely effective piece with plenty of Khachaturian's Armenian flavorings, lots of rhythmic interest and virtuosity galore. Fischer brings to it a musicianly concern for dynamic subtlety and nuanced phrasing along with complete mastery of the concerto's technical difficulties. She eschews the Oistrakh edition of the concerto -- he extended the first movement cadenza and cut some measures in the finale -- and uses Khachaturian's original version. This is a first-class performance of a wonderful concerto which is worth one's attention.
One cannot but adore Prokofiev's First Violin Concerto. And one cannot say enough about the masterful orchestration Prokofiev provides, with harp intertwined with violin harmonics and extraordinarily plangent woodwind writing. The Russian National Orchestra, a group formed not long after the breakup of the Soviet Union and the stirrings of a new freedom in Russia, is a marvelous group. Their conductor here is Yakov Kreizberg, incidentally the brother of the probably better-known conductor Semyon Bychkov, who is making a very favorable impression these days. I've heard a number of his recent recordings and am mightily impressed with his formally clear approach that is, ironically, coupled with a really poetic sensibility. Clarity and poetry make wonderful partners in his recordings. Both Kreizberg and Fischer show us the darker side of the Prokofiev and in the process present it as the lyrical yet fierce work it is.
Glazunov's concerto is a late Romantic work in one movement. It is notable for its heartfelt lyricism, gorgeous tunes, and the equality of the orchestral principals with the violin soloists. It is really more like a symphony with violin obbligato, particularly in the long and lovely andante middle section. That aspect of the work is emphasized here and one must give credit to Fischer and the recording engineers for allowing that to shine through. Fischer is more generous, even self-effacing, in this than some soloists in other recordings the concerto has had (Perlman, Heifetz) and this is to the benefit of the work's effect. (A comparable concerto, to give you some idea of what I mean, is Brahms's Second Piano Concerto where the piano is not always the spotlighted star.) This is a genial reading with Fischer's burnished tone riding above and around the contributions by the orchestra. The folksong aspects of the finale are emphasized and one is left with a kind of uplift that makes one want to start the concerto all over again.
This is, make no mistake, a marvelous disc and I cannot recommend it highly enough. In addition, all three concerti are given strikingly lifelike sound.

Quality Classical Music Listening.......2006-04-08
I am not an expert in classical music but I do enjoy listening to good classical music. This recording of Russian Violin Concertos is one that I have enjoyed listening too many times. I would not hesitate recommending it to anyone who enjoys classical music that highlights the romantic violin.
3 Russian Violin Ctos - Verve, Lilt, Dash, & Elegance.......2005-07-15
Julia Fischer is a violinist whose name is news to me, but then, What good news she is. Like the young Anne Sophie Mutter, she appears to have sprung whole from the head of Jove. She plays with a simply huge command of her instrument, and she grasps the music in both local nuances and larger paragraphs. Her intonation and fingerwork and bowing are well nigh faultless, so far as I can hear. She has a sort of wicked ease that actually might remind an older listener of the late, great Heifitz. He used to tell his student violinists to warm up by playing fingered octaves, which is rather like telling people to start just where most others are leaving off in happy achievement.
Nowhere are these capabilities put to better use than in her resuscitation of the much hackeneyed Khachaturian concerto, which she has the gruff to play as her opening. She obviously loves playing it, and has such a good time that it is quite easy to forget all the kitsch renderings you may have heard over the years. The RNO under Yakov Kreizberg (who is also a rising star among conductors now active in Europe) keep up with Julia all the way. Somehow all the flash just sounds scintillating, and the orientalisms just sound atmospheric and colorful. You think in some beautiful spots that Khachaturian knew what he was doing, after all.
Then Julia and company move on to the Prokofiev first violin concerto, and make deft, stunning magic of it, too. Again she and the conductor and the orchestra demonstrate remarkable unanimity of musical purpose. And, they have a good time with the Prokofiev, shattering our stuffy stereotypes that genius in classical western music is always tendentious, fat, and dressed in over-starched shirts with very stiff collars.
Thirdly, we get the Glazunov concerto. This, too, benefits from a completely fresh and straightforward reading, rooted in the players love of the music. Julia realizes the more brilliant moments of the Glazunov without forgetting that its heartfelt pusle is mainly lyrical, and her lyrical is so lithe and athletic that you don't feel for once that Glazunov was tempted to outstay the melodic welcomes embodied in his main themes.
The SACD surround sound is equally wonderful. It completely serves the music and the musicians, without calling attention to itself. You simply get a good, multichannel sense of everybody, including Julia, the super RNO as a whole body and as an unnervingly talented nexus of virtuosos, and of course, of conductor Kreizberg. The hall acoustic adds air and resonance, which is quite an accomplishment considering that we are talking about a recording studio and not one of the historic Moscovite venues like Tchaikovsky Hall at the conservatory.
If you like superior violin playing that is above all musical, with an orchestra and conductor that can keep up with such a soloist; then this disc will do fine. Five stars, fading into sunrise pinks and whites and blues. Where did the slow night go? Oh, well, play that SACD again, will you?
PS. Keep your ears and eyes on the lookout. Julia Fischer is now an exclusive Pentatone artist, and Yakov Kreizberg, maybe, too.

Album Description
Masters and Commanders, the newest release by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra on the Grammy Award-winning Telarc label, is a swashbuckling musical portrait of valiant seamen, tempestuous captains, eccentric pirates, pious pilgrims and more. The new recording includes selections from classic films such as Captain Blood, Sea Hawk, Mutiny on the Bounty, The Buccaneer and Plymouth Adventure, as well as the recent Pirates of the Caribbean movies and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
Highlights from Masters and Commanders include Academy Award-winning composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Captain Blood Overture and Suite from Sea Hawk. Captain Blood, which was the legendary actor Errol Flynn's first starring role, also was Korngold's first original film score. Korngold's evocative cinematic scores set a benchmark for numerous film composers who followed, including John Debney, whose score for the 1995 film, Cutthroat Island, was dedicated in part to Korngold and Miklós Rózsa. The end title from Cutthroat Island is heard on Masters and Commanders, as well as Morton Gould's Main Title from Windjammer and Henry Mancini's "Arctic Whale Hunt" from The White Dawn.
Miklós Rózsa, of Ben-Hur fame, composed "The Mayflower" for the film, Plymouth Adventure, in 1952. Franz Waxman's film music is represented with the Overture to Anne of the Indies and Suite from Captains Courageous.
Hans Zimmer, considered a worthy successor to Korngold's symphonic idiom, scored big with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and the earlier Crimson Tide, both of which are represented on Masters and Commanders. Three selections from Klaus Badelt's score from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, also are included.
The recording also includes music by Elmer Bernstein (selections from The Buccaneer); Alfred Newman ("Conquest" from Captain from Castile); and Bronislau Kaper (Main Title from Mutiny on the Bounty). A Richard Tognetti arrangement of Luigi Boccherini's Los Manolos is included from Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, the 2003 film starring Russell Crowe.

From the label:
On its spectacular debut recording, the exciting young British vocal group stile antico presents a program of English Renaissance music associated with the office of Compline, the service that ends the monastic liturgical day. A who's-who of 16th-century British composers--including Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, and John Sheppard--is represented here by hymns, antiphons, responsories, motets, and psalms: the occasion not only for music of intimacy, elegance, and reflection, but for flights of breathtaking canonic and contrapuntal invention and harmonic daring.
Stile Antico is an ensemble of young British singers, fast gaining recognition as one of the most original and exciting new voices in its field. In 2005 the group won the inaugural Audience Prize at the Early Music Network International Young Artists' Competition, drawing critical praise for its `wonderfully vivid singing' and `perfectly focused and ideally balanced voices.' Since this success, Stile Antico has appeared throughout the UK, including at the City of London, Lake District Summer Music and Beverley and East Riding Festivals; engagements for 2007 include the York Early Music Festival. The group has also collaborated with Sting on tour in his project Songs from the Labyrinth, performing lute songs by John Dowland.
Working without a conductor, the members of Stile Antico rehearse and perform as chamber musicians, each contributing artistically to the musical result. Their repertoire ranges from the glorious legacy of the English Tudor composers to the works of the Flemish and Spanish schools and the music of the early Baroque. They are passionate about the need to communicate with their audiences, combining thoughtful programming with direct, expressive performances. They are also committed to developing their educational work, for which they have received generous funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
