    Trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso's new release "Kellso's BC Buddies" is his first release as a leader since "Chapter 2: The Plot Thickens," which was on Arbors Records, but is presently out of print, and was recorded 10 years ago. The BC stands for British Columbia--it was co-produced by Kellso and saxophonist Simon Stribling in Vancouver, Canada, July, 2005, with Don Ogilvie on acoustic guitar (and amplified guitar on 1 track, and oud on one song!), Lauri Lyster on drums and percussion, Sean Cronin on bass, and guest appearances by Bria Skonberg on vocals, and Simon Stribling on trumpet, alto, and tenor. Kellso even sings one song (a first--bound to make this a collector's item)!     When he died in 1943, Harlem-born Thomas "Fats" Waller had taken all he'd learned from his mentor, the ragtime-stride pianist James P. Johnson, and established a reputation as an instrumentalist/songwriter/performer that dwarfed Johnson's, casting a long shadow over subsequent keyboard giants, including Erroll Garner, Count Basie, and Art Tatum. Though Waller's first recordings brought stride piano into the musical mainstream, they barely hinted at the greatness looming ahead. Waller's ascendancy began in 1927. Over the next two years, well documented here, he worked with small combos populated by many of the preeminent instrumentalists of the day, laying the foundation for the towering artistry he would deliver in the 1930s with the group dubbed Fats Waller and His Rhythm. Even the lesser moments here--primarily four songs recorded with the Louisiana Sugar Babes (featuring James P. Johnson on piano, with Waller on the pipe organ)--feature fascinating if cautious interplay and solos by cornetist Jabbo Smith and multi-instrumentalist Garvin Bushell. The cream of the cuts are those credited to Fats Waller and His Buddies, dating from March 1929, with Waller joined by the likes of Gene Krupa, Jack Teagarden, Pops Foster, and trombonist Charlie Irvis, who later would play a pivotal role in the development of Duke Ellington's "jungle style." Although deferential to his inspired accompanists, Waller's engaging, witty solos point the way to the outsized personality that blossomed in his music over the next decade. --David McGee

    If you can find a copy of this scarce CD, go out and buy it. It's joyful music by various groups led by Fats Waller but featuring jazz greats like Jabbo Smith,James P.Johnson and Garvin Bushell notwithstanding Fats himself, of course. Wow! On the up tempo numbers, those guys swung like crazy.

    One must beware of digital restoration from the late '80s and early '90s. That was when it was stylish to show off just how much "noise" could be removed with CEDAR or Sonic Solutions' NO NOISE programs. The trouble is, a lot of the freshness of the music is in the same range as the "noise", and if too much is removed, the songs sound dull and lifeless. This entire CD is very difficult for me to listen to for that reason. I have scratchy 78s of many of these, and even with the scratch, they sound SOOOOO much better than this early attempt at digital restoration. Sorry, my copy will be on ebay next week.

              On this straight ahead CD Bill and his trio explore a rich sweep of jazz moods through tasty interpretations of jazz classics and some excellent originals. Bill's piano is at times driving, swinging, bluesy, funky and at other times rich, warm and reflective, revealing a wide range of jazz roots that crosses the usual genre borders. Taste and thoughtfulness are in ample evidence throughout. Bill recorded "Out of The Blue" with internationally known drummer Keith Copeland and top Danish bassist Jesper Bodilsen at Focus Sound Studio in Copenhagen, Denmark with percussionist/producer Emmanuel Abdul Rahim as engineer.

                  Boots and His Buddies recorded 6 recording sessions for Bluebird between 1935 and 1938, and,on this CD the first three sessions appear from 1935 to early 1937. While the music enclosed may occasionaly be deficent in intonation, the very fine tenor of Baker Millian and the excellent trumpet solos (evidently by different trumpet players on the various sessions), particularly on the earliest sessions, make this CD a worthwile purchase. The strong southwestern swing of the band reminds one of a B grade version of 1932 vintage Bennie Moten (but then Hot Lips Page , Ben Webster and Count Basie are not present), and the blues (How Long), or the riff oriented pieces like "Riffs", "The Vamp" (really a slower version the the Will Hudson chart "Nit Wit Serenade"), or "The Swing" (this is a more swinging version of Ben Pollack's "Swing Out")really show the band to advantage, and gives us a picture of a typical ensamble that would have been the real soundtrack to the Kansas City movie that was popular a few years ago. Enjoy

                  Many collectors of big band jazz of the thirties and forties are intrigued by the phenomenon known as the "Territory Band". This was a band operating in an area away from one of the major population centers - New York or Chicago for example - often serving as a breeding ground for new talent. These outfits were active in every region of the country but nowhere more than in the Southwest. Some of these groups attracted enough attention to become nationally known - Count Basie and Andy Kirk are among the best examples of this - but most left only memories and perhaps a few recordings to chronicle their existence.

                  In this respect, Boots and His Buddies, a band led by drummer Clifford "Boots" Douglas and working out of San Antonio was more fortunate than most. This band recorded forty-two sides for Bluebird. Twenty one of these are included in this CD with the rest being in Volume 2.

                  Boots (or maybe it was Bluebird)had a habit of assigning dumb names to well known tumes - for example Sometimes I'm Happy has been retitled The Happy. Soloists were competent but for the most part, not outstanding. The exception was tenorman Baker Millian, a musician who should be better known and who played in the "Texas Tenor" style not unlike Herschel Evans. Although the band was inconsistent, at its best it is well worth hearing.
