About the Artist
Based in Berkeley CA, Rachel Garlin is a nationally-touring musician with two independent albums, success in premier venues, and a dedicated following.
The 2004 Winner of the Newport Folk Festival's Talent Search and a 2004 Kerrville New Folk finalist, Garlin has quickly come into her own as a full time performing songwriter. Recordings of her most recent two-night run at the Bay Area's Freight and Salvage are due for a fall release as Garlin's first live record, Big Blue Sky.
According to the East Bay Express, Garlin is "outgoing and dedicated to inspiring in others the same passion for language that she holds dear." (L. Kelp) Her themes are "fresh and often unexpectedly moving: the friendships of thirteen-year-old girls, her grandmother's dancing, a little boy worrying about the vandals who dump their garbarge on his family's lawn." (C. Gerst)
Garlin grew up listening to her father's Pete Seeger records, and hearing the sounds of traditional music during annual summer trips to Scotland, her mother's homeland. She studied the cello and French horn, and in high school, started playing her father's Gibson J-50.
That same guitar stayed with her through college graduation, and later accompanied her to her first teaching post in Phoenix, Arizona where she was stationed as part of the Teach for America service corps. Ms. Garlin began to infuse her third grade math lessons with melodies, and the unexpected result was the beginning of a longer songwriting journey.
Upon returning to Berkeley in the year 2000, Garlin released her debut album, Green Light Distance, where, according to Arlene Adler of the SF Bay Guardian, she "manages to touch on songwriting bases as far back as Woody Guthrie." Working with producer Lisa Zeiler (from the folk trio Rebecca Riots), Garlin co-produced her second album Five Minutes in 2002, a collection of story-filled originals, as well as one of her first tributes to her Scottish heritage: a lively version of the traditional song "Johnnie Cope".
Playing between 80 and 110 shows per year, Garlin performs at a variety of venues including theatres, coffeehouses, festivals, schools, and house concerts. She has opened for Ferron, Melissa Ferrick, Hot Buttered Rum, Kris Delmhorst, Box Set, Rebecca Riots, and Erica Wheeler, performed at benefits, played live on NPR's Democracy Now and Click and Clack's "Car Talk" while sometimes traveling in an alternative fuel "veggie van" that runs on recycled french fry grease.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Even though he has a long independent release history, Bebo Norman is quickly establishing himself in the larger Christian music arena as a songwriter extraordinaire. In his latest, Big Blue Sky, Norman writes and sings of a God never more alive and ever-present than in the rich lyrical imagery this burgeoning talent presents. In the catchy opener, "I Am," we're reassured that the Creator is "in the center of your storm / I am in the fire / I am in the flood / I am in the marrow and the blood / When you cannot stand, I am." Both "Cover Me" and "Underneath" also stand out with jangly, airy guitars that massage Norman's messages of hope and restoration. And you can't miss the moving tribute to mothers everywhere on the ending track, "Where You Are." Big Blue Sky is an impressive release full of reflection and resonance. Much credit for this should go to producer Ed Cash (Caedmon's Call), who puts Norman's earthy vocals and brilliant songwriting in a tasteful wrapper. --Michael Lyttle
Customer Reviews:
Big Blue Yes Indeedy!.......2007-03-08
This was the first album I heard by Bebo so I'm a little biased to it. Other reviewers stated that they liked the more folky, stripped-down music of his prior albums, but I prefer the more fleshed out ones here. Big Blue Sky reeks of an artist coming into his own. Buy it you little freaks!
Perfection.......2006-04-26
I've been listening to this CD for 5 yrs know and it's simply perfect. Consistent from beginning to end with solid lyrics, emotional vocals and an open, singer/songwriter pop sound that makes you want to listen again and again but won't rot your teeth. Sincere and confident delivery from an artist that needs to be an "A" list CBA artist---sales talk---buy this CD! The best in his library (and I'm a fan--got em all)
He's awesome.......2003-06-01
I can't get enough of Bebo. I have all of his CD's.
I'm not disappointed..........2003-03-01
Usually when musicians have an amazing first album such as Bebo did with "Ten Thousand Days," it's hard to follow it up with another one up to par. Bebo however does not have this problem. "Big Blue Sky" is great CD with some really great songs on it. My personal favorites are "Cover Me","Underneath", "Tip of My Heart" and "All That I Have Sown." This CD encompasses many different styles of music. Bebo brings it all together with his awesome lyrics and melodies. I can't wait to see what he comes up with next.
An evolving sound, an absolute delight!.......2002-10-08
I definitely saw a noticeable difference from "Ten Thousand Days" to "Big Blue Sky," but it's not a bad change at all. In the earlier album, Bebo's sound is much more natural and acoustic, the lyrics more poetic and soulful. On this CD, there are still strong traces of the acoustic balladeer in several songs, like "Sons & Daughters" or "Perhaps She'll Wait" (my personal favorite on this album), but also a bit stronger showing of the more pop sound that peeked out in "Stand." This is most evident in the opening few tracks, with lively tunes like "I Am" and "Cover Me," and the very witty and spritely "Underneath."
I can't say that Bebo's sound really changes, so much as his balance or emphasis tends to tip more in favor of the more "rockish" style that I already knew was lurking in him, just waiting to come out. Still, I think the balance on "Big Blue Sky" is a bit of an improvement over the nearly unbroken folk sound of "Ten Thousand Days." Either way, this guy has an awesome talent and a great heart for the Lord, and I doubt there will be many listeners who aren't delighted by what they hear.

I would give this album way more than 5 stars if I could!!!.......2002-05-20
Recently, I haven't been able to get enough of this man's music!!I began listening to Soul's Core again and saw it in a different light-appriciated it for what it was. I then bought "Beneath the Velvet Sun" and "Better Days"-both astounded me. The next album I bought was "Big Blue Sky"-I couldn't believe my ears the first time I put this album in to my CD player;I was amazed and every song enchanted me. It is in close-keeping with the kind of music on Soul's Core;quite folky and very acoustic and Shawn's song-writing is still second to none-he has the ability to take his audience away with him on a journey to where he was or how he felt when he wrote each particular song.
On each track, you get transported to another place which is what makes Shawn Mullins so distinctively different from other artists. "Canyons and Caverns" is a brilliant track to open the album with;it is also where the line for the album title originates from-Shawn appears to be looking at an old picture of himself and remembering what it was like to be so young and how there are no restrictions to worry about at that age; 'There are canyons and there are caverns, and there are border road-side taverns, and I am held captive by the big blue sky above'-its a wonderful track.
Another absolutely stand-out track on this album is "The Sky's the Limit". This song was actually written by Matthew Kahler, a very good friend of Shawns'-they both met when they were struggling to make it as music artists years ago. It is a beautifully written song which gives you a sense of freedom when you hear it and the brilliant music encompasses these lyrics. 'The sky's the limit for the bird on the wing, and every minute now the view is changing.....its life on earth with the ground as an optional thing'.
Other fantastic tracks include "Lately", "In Her Eyes", "Pandora" and "Evolution Man".
I highly recommend getting this album-you'd be missing out if you didn't!! There are no restrictions to where Shawn can take you with his music-it is heartfelt, passionate and inspirational. So buy this album and let yourself be completely absorbed by this wonderful music in another fantastic album by Shawn Mullins.
After buying Soul's Core and Better Days I had to buy MORE!.......1999-12-30
This artist simply does not disappoint. This disc is more folksy and personal than Soul's Core and Better Days, but after a few listens, it is a real solid piece of music to enjoy again and again. Shawn really opens his heart in the music and lyrics of this disc.
Great music, great style, and most of all a great artist!.......1999-07-17
I love Big Blue Sky... the songs are top notch and I will always hold this CD close to my heart... I have 3 of Shawn Mullins' CDs and they are the 3 I listen to the most. not a day goes by without me getting one of his songs stuck in my mind... he's a great talent, and he's finally getting a little bit of well deserved fame! if you like Soul's Core, then you will no doubt like this CD too... the songs that stick out most to me are Lately, Canyons and Caverns, Baby Blue... I have almost cried sometimes while i listen to Baby Blue... there is one note that always gets to me... (and bringing me to the level of shedding a tear almost never happens...) powerful stuff in this CD! (check out eggshelss too!!)
good lyrics, and just plain good music.......1999-06-15
Big Blue Sky is a a must have for a shawn mullins fan. The catchy " Canyons and Caverns" is one of the best tracks, that'll stay in your head for days. In "telling you" it describes a person trying to tell someone about how they were abused as a child. And you gotta love the haunting "hawksong". The sound is good, and it is great alblum to chill too. I also suggest getting "better days" and "eggshells"
Good CD if you enjoy mellow heart-felt ballads about life.......1999-05-15
If you've heard the CD Soul's Core from Shawn Mullins and enjoyed it then you will definately enjoy this one too, it doesn't have as many upbeat songs (or immediate appeal) as the songs from Soul's Core, but the more I listen to it the more I enjoy it...it is a great CD to listen to if your having problems and just need to relax and think about things...it's mellow, relaxing and most of all utterly enjoyable, some of my personal favorites are Canyons & Caverns, Lately (great song), and Pandora (which puts a new spin on the old tale of Pandora's Box) I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Shawn Mullins style of music!

Excellent Album.......2006-04-06
I remember seeing them play live in 1987 and then going to the record store to buy this album the next day. I played that album again and again. Of course, now I am going to have to get the CD. Very easy to listen to songs, very enjoyable. Hell, I should have given it 4.5 stars.
Adrenaline...X it is without the side effects...sort of.......2001-03-03
This album will make you drive faster, screw harder and bang your head like the irrisistable sledge on the immovable anvil.

Four and a half, really!.......2000-08-21
Recorded and released in 1987, this was actually the Pikes' third release, but counts as their first major label album. I'd give it the full five stars (for songwriting alone), but for the production: the band recorded in the classic '80's style, laying down track after track in isolation. It's a pristine album, but denies them the energy and abandon of their live shows. They learned from that on subsequent albums, recording as a unit from then on. "Big Blue Sky", though, should be remembered as what it really was: a breath of fresh air at a time when Canadian (and other) rock was often generic and sterile - this came out when the "hair bands" were on top; Jay semko's lyrics (just about every song here is credited to him - the only time that happened) are genuine, the playing earnest. It's a surprisingly confident "debut" from a young band, that would go on to bigger things (and is now working on their first studio album since '92). If melodic and intelligent, wry pop rock is your thing, you're home.
Very Good Pikes CD.......2000-07-15
I bought this CD a while ago and I can't beleive more people have not heard it or played it. Good tunes, in there classic style. Two thumbs up but not perfect.

Great. Tradition lives on........2007-05-14
Most people know Pat Donohue as the guitar picker on "A Prairie Home Companion." More significant is that he, along with Doc Watson and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, is one of the three finest and most important acoustic guitarists still living today. "Big Blind Bluesy" may be the most valuable of his CDs. In his singing and picking, you'll find the tradition of most of the great blues artists of the past carried on faithfully and gloriously. Above all, you might hear the spirit of Big Bill Broonzy alive and among us again today. This CD simply is a must for any serious fan of roots blues.
Good white blues.......2003-12-12
Pat Donohue is a fine guitar player. Big Blind Bluesey is first rate work. Donohue isn't an edgy performer but is very smooth instead. Who'd have thought a guy from Minnesota could pick like that.
