The bluegrass bandwagon continues to roll in 2001. This collection attempts to capitalize on the breakthrough success of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. Drawn from Rounder's rich catalog, the 19-cut sampler of female singing, fiddling, and picking extends from an era when women were a novelty in this male-dominated music category through the popular crossover ascendance of such contemporary artists (and O Brother favorites) as Alison Krauss and the Cox Family. Harmonies from the likes of Rhonda Vincent and the Stevens sisters soar toward the heavens, while the earthier strains of Hazel Dickens and Ginny Hawker are more reflective of the music's hardscrabble roots. Though Wilma Lee Cooper's "You Tried to Ruin My Name" has all the subtlety of a hog-calling contest, such rawness is about as real as this music gets. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-03-08

The voices are clear and you can actually hear real instruments! There isn't one processed song in the bunch. My kids and husband love it as well. We can actually all listen to it together and I don't have to worry about explaining certain things to the kids.

5 out of 5 stars This Bluegrass CD is Excellent!!!!!!.......2005-07-25

There are 19 tracks on this CD and with the exception of 1-2 songs, this may well be one of the best bluegrass CDs I own. What a buy! Eight More Miles with Laurie Lewis, Claire Lynch, Lynn Morris and Rhonda Vincent steal the show here. I have been a lover of bluegrass for over 25 years and this CD is a must have for everyone.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks the Cohesion of her Brother.......2003-10-12

The collection of songs on "O Brother" was made very deliberately, with a wonderful ear toward a "comprehensive" overall sound. But there was no such brilliant and strong guiding force at work for "O Sister", which is essentially a compilation of various female Rounder artistes.

Don't get me wrong - I like many of the songs included here, but they don't always blend together in the best way.

I haven't yet heard a superb compliation collection of female bluegrass artistes, but if you want to hear an excellent and cohesive collection of Rounder artists, buy the 2-CD "Hand Picked: 25 Years of Bluegrass".

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2003-09-27

I was just thummin' through some free downloads when I ran into this cd and thought I would give it a try. thinking nothing of it I started playing them. after listening to the samples rour times I decied to get it for myself. the songs are equally catchy up deat and addicitve. the banjo is a beautiful insterment which the cd contains a lot of is old time sound. if you like bluegrass your collection wont be complete without this cd I imagin the frist one is just as good.

1 out of 5 stars Phony Bluegrass.......2003-03-29

If this is Bluegrass then I will have to stick with greengrass.
My impression is that they failed with rock or whaterver. Music such as O'Sister will destroy real Bluegrass. The CD that I purchased went to the garbage can where it belongs!!

Women have always been at the center of sub-Saharan music, as they were the keepers of the hearth, intimately involved in the life-sustaining mysteries of agriculture, food preparation, birth, and death. However, Africa, like the rest the world, is in the throes of social change. Female roles are evolving and the artists heard here represent a confident, worldly sensibility. The roster encompasses Dorothy Masuka's comfortable, gospel-flavored South African jazz, Maria de Barrios' sensual Cape Verdean morna, and a liltingly tonal ballad from Paris-based Algerian refugee Souad Massi. But a major reason to purchase this album is the track by Khadja Nin of Burundi; her deep-toned, knowing, unpolished voice transforms a Stevie Wonder tune into an ecstatic anthem of empowerment. Despite the occasional overuse of easy-fix electric keyboards, each singer emerges as a force to be reckoned with as, one by one, their voices salute the earth and soar into the heavens. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2007-07-18

Elegant, melodic, rhythmic, and contemporary. An awesome collection
of songs, from relaxed ballads to more rhythmically motivated #s. A nice
spice of high life, but much more diverse than that. Toe tappers that keeps your life picture bright. Refreshing.

5 out of 5 stars another putumayo winner..........2007-03-31

the music is rhythmic and pleasing to the ear. i enjoy the cd and use it in my pilates classes. i have many putumayo cds and like them alot. my only complaint is that like some of the other putumayo cds i wish it had 2-3 more songs.

5 out of 5 stars Really good.......2006-06-14

this cd is really good. It is almost astonishing what people can do with their voices and instruments.
mesmerizing...

5 out of 5 stars An Accessibly Exotic Treat.......2006-06-07

Another primo collection from the "Putumayo Presents" series, "Women of Africa" is a treasure. Unless you're tone deaf or otherwise severely Music Appreciation-Challenged, you're going to love this CD; and in fact, so will your kids and so will your parents. Even your co-workers! There's nothing not to like, and I mean that only in the best possible way, not in a bland "one-size-fits-all" way. There are a variety of sounds and styles, but they follow one another well; this assortment isn't all over the map in a jarring, staccato way. It's suitable for all occasions, from lightening up your commute, to the workplace itself, or as a social lubricant at picnics and parties and other gatherings. Go ahead; conduct an experiment by playing this CD (at a mid-level volume), and watch your formerly uptight friends and colleagues start to loosen up and enjoy themselves.

I'm describing the effect of the music more than the music itself, because that is a visceral experience which you must take part in yourself. But I've already done the weeding; I sample and screen music all the time in search of recordings such as this one, and it involves suffering through a lot of turkeys, believe me. But I've done the work for you, so you don't have to.

But for the record, I will mention that Dorothy Masuka's selection here sounds like the kind of smooth jazz vocal piece one might hear from a Nat Cole or Natalie Cole or Diana Krall ensemble. That's one example only; this collection features a whole potpourri of tuneful sounds and they're all delightful (hard as that might be to believe).

5 out of 5 stars makes me smile.......2005-10-26

I just got this CD recently and I've put it on every morning. The calm, purely happy, energy just makes me start the day on the right foot!

Amazon.com essential recording

Before these 1960s recordings were made, the impact of women on bluegrass was virtually non-existent. Molly O'Day and Wilma Lee Cooper had forged some success, but Hazel and Alice were more interested in the dual harmonies of the Stanley Brothers. The pair's unrefined, passionate, seamlessly intertwined harmonies leave a lasting impression, and their sound often owes more to traditional country than bluegrass. Supported by mandolinist David Grisman and fiddle legend Chubby Wise, the pair attack the songs of Bill Monroe, the Carter Family, the Stanleys, Delmores, and Louvins with fire and conviction. Dickens originals such as "Won't You Come and Sing for Me," with four-part harmonies, and the playful "Cowboy Jim" display her deft songwriting touch while her raw mountain tenor rivals that of Ralph Stanley. --Marc Greilsamer

Album Description

When Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard recorded these songs in the mid-1960s, bluegrass music was dominated by male performers. They selected their favorite songs and arranged them for a stellar group of sidemen—bluegrass legends Lamar Grier, Chubby Wise, David Grisman, and Billy Baker. Their widely admired performances made them role models for future generations of women in bluegrass. The 26 tracks have been remastered, resequenced, and newly annotated by the performers themselves. Includes Long Black Veil, The One I Love Is Gone, and I Hear a Sweet Voice Calling. "Hazel and Alice blast out vintage bluegrass-country soundsongs with fierce, raucous energy." -Time Magazine

5 out of 5 stars Essential bluegrass album; the real stuff.......2007-03-07

I used to have an old tape of these that a friend made from his LP's; I cannot believe it took me so long to replace it with a CD. What was I thinking?

Hazel Dickens is a national treasure. This is an absolutely wonderful CD and a must-have for anyone who even thinks they might like bluegrass. No prissy singing here: These women both have beautiful, strong, voices. The songs are great, the harmonies are great, the instrumentation is great (first-class accompanists and arrangements).

This isn't a great "women's bluegrass album", it's one of the great bluegrass albums, period.

5 out of 5 stars Pioneering Women of Bluegrass Review.......2007-01-09

This is a great bluegrass recording. It is raw and you can feel the emotion in the singing. I also really enjoyed the banjo playing on a number of the pieces. This recording is worth every penny spent.

5 out of 5 stars Mountain diamonds.......2003-11-13

Of all the treasures I've unearthed in the Indiana State University music library, this is one of the shiniest. It's the kind of disc that makes you crawl down onto the floor, stretch out, and soak up all the pathos and passion of the music. Dickens' and Garrard's voices are just strange and raw enough to make a lasting impression without coming across as either weird or harsh, and the songs themselves are totally out-of-this-world. The melodies and harmonies are intriguing, the instrumental accompaniment is superb, and the lyrics are very fine. Acoustically, it's amazing that a recording done on a simple LP forty years ago could sound this good, because the sound quality is virtually crystal clear. Don't miss this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent bluegrass........2003-10-22

I actually first heard about Hazel Dickens on Worldlink tv. They aired a documentary entitled "You can't tell the singer from the song" about her life and work. The "throatiness" of her voice was strangely enticing. Her voice is piercing and emotional- perfect for bluegrass. Well, I went to a music store and found this disc. I didn't know who Alice Gerard was either, but I am extremely happy to have found this treasure. The two women compliment each other perfectly. Hazel's voice is shrill and passionate, Alice's full of conviction, yet with soothing tones. Some of the highlights of the album are "TB Blues", "Who's that Knocking?", "Gabriel's Call", "Walkin' in my Sleep", "Long Black Veil", "I hear a Sweet Voice Calling", and "I Just got Wise". This album is a revelation. Buy it. I promise you will have no disappointments.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of all time.......2003-10-12

Listening to this album will make anyone a convert to bluegrass. The range of sons is incredible, from rollicking upbeat tunes to mournful dirges. Hazel and Alice's voices blend together magnificently in harmony. This sounds so great that it is unbelievable that it was recorded on a minmal shoestring in the mid 1960s, in bare-bones conditions with borrowed old equipment, because it sounds so perfect.

If I had to recommend just one album to anyone, it would be this one.

Hazel Dickens has the most purely emotional singing voice I've ever heard, even better than Judy Garland or Edith Piaf. Her range can quickly go from utterly raw to softly sweet.

I have specified in my will that a song from this album be played at my memorial service.

5 out of 5 stars good music.......2007-04-10

Best music I have heard in a long time. Every woman 30+ will appreciate this group, every man involved with a woman 30+ will appreciate this group:) Jazzy, bluesy, comical, great voices, great lyrics. You can't ask for more.

I throw it into a mix with the more famous groups and when one of Saffire's tunes come on I am always asked who the group is. I have purchased 15 of these CD's for gift-giving, mostly to my fun female friends but have also received great reviews from men I gifted to - more for the music and some of the more humorous tunes. Highly recommended. I am giving one to my 68 year old mother for mother's day-she will love it!

I first saw saffire at the NY State Blues Fest in Syracuse, N.Y. I've loved them since then. This disc is one of their best. Combination of folsky blues, jazz, and creole type rhythems belnd perfedctly with their incredible lyrics. This disc has turned a lot of non-blues people in Saffire fans includsing one group of women who calls themselves "THe Silver Beaver Club"

4 out of 5 stars Saffire the Uppity Blues Women Strike again.......2006-04-11

Man!!!!! What fantastic album. Even if it is a compilation album, it rates right up there with their previous ones. They need to keep on going with some more in the future

There is only one thing wrong with this ablum. It does not have the song "Cold Pizza and Warm Beer" on it. This one of their classic songs. That is why I gave a four star rating instead of the top five.

With her Boyfriends, Neko Case blurs the line between rock and country, but when playing the rare gig as one-half of the Corn Sisters, she's all roots. Here, along with Sister Carolyn Mark, you'll find 16 laid-back and unpolished acoustic tunes (some covers, some originals) recorded one fateful night in 1998 at Seattle diner/bar Hattie's Hat. The songs vary in spunk, but most of Case's influences are exposed here--stripped-down covers of Loretta Lynn's "Fist City," Lucinda Williams's "Howlin' at Midnight," and one standard, "This Little Light of Mine," are all impressive. Everly Brothers-inspired harmonies abound, and, on the handful of folksy originals, Mark steals the show. From the lovesick ballad "Matinéed" to the more-upbeat "Not a Doll" (sounding slightly like Mary Lou Lord's better material), these are great tunes. Neko Case completists will want to hear this project (and Neko's work with power-popsters the New Pornographers), and alt-country fans won't be disappointed by this low-key, fun hootenanny. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Neko is amazing!.......2006-05-08

First saw Neko at EMP in Seattle 3 years ago. Her voice is amazingly versatile, eery just doesn't begin to describe the goosebumps her music gifts. The cornsisters is a fabulous teaming with Carolyn Mark, yet another unique and beautiful voice. I don't know why, but the Corn on the Cob song just makes me grin every single time I hear it!

4 out of 5 stars awww shucks..........2005-09-23

i was lucky enough to have seen the Corn Sisters live quite a few years back and it was an absolutely stellar show. Neko and Carolyn were in fine form and when they weren't sending chills up your spine with their songs, they had you laughing so hard it hurt with their inbetween song banter. it's great to see how much fun these two girls have when they get together and it shows on this disc of live recordings. their natural chemistry spills over in every note. my favorite songs are "Not A Doll", "Don't Let Me Cross Over", and "She's Leaving Town" (a different version of that song is featured as a bonus track on here in which Carolyn sarcastically (?) describes the tune's author as a "weed-gobbling cheater" to much laughter). if you are a fan of Neko Case or Carolyn Mark's solo work, then you need the Corn Sisters in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I had been there!.......2005-08-28

I bought this cd before I really knew Neko Case's music. It was the kind of purchase where I listened to the cd for 5 seconds in the store and immediately bought it. I don't regret it, in the least. Case & Mark's harmonies are tight without being cheesy. Their voices and playing sounds great together, and I even like the spontaneous "office party" sound that other reviewers complain about. Every time I hear it I imagine myself in that Seattle diner. The recording captures the rough edges and intimacy of the best live performances. "Too Many Pills" and "Fist City" are divine--two of my favorite tracks of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Very glad I finally got this one........2003-09-03

Even though I am a big Neko Case fan (and Carolyn Mark fan to a lesser degree), I held off getting this CD for a long time because the reviews were so iffy. I'm sorry I waited - it's great. Even the sound quality is pretty decent - certainly not bad enough to detract from the songs. If you're not a big fan of either of these women, this may not be the CD to start with. But if you're holding off like I was because you're not sure it's worth it, you're missing out.

5 out of 5 stars haunting and hilarious.......2002-04-10

i bought this album blind (or maybe deaf) on the strength of neko case's strikingly haunting voice and it immediately became one of my favorites. its stripped-down acoustic approach allows both case and mark's luminous vocals to shine unemcumbered. by turns funny (corn on the cob), and heartbreaking (don't let me cross over and long black veil), this is an album for the lovesick in need of a little cartharsis. Buy it.

If you need something to pump you up for the upcoming second edition of Sarah McLachlan's all-female touring festival, Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music is the ticket. This two-disc compilation features 25 live cuts from the inaugural trip. On first spin, it's hard not to notice the range and sheer power of the vocals here. Many of the artists give performances that eclipse their studio work. The most obvious example of this is the opening "Mississippi," where Paula Cole unleashes a voice larger than life. Predictably present is McLachlan's "Building a Mystery," the definitive Lilith song, which began its assault on the air waves at the start of last year's tour and, well, kept building. The house that Sarah built is still growing strong. Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music is satisfying proof. --Carla DeSantis

4 out of 5 stars Lilith Fair, Volume One.......2007-07-06

Many of the performers at Lilith Fair received far more attention, but it is hard to believe that any of them, in the course of their entire careers, will come close to equaling the stature or influence of the sublime Emmylou Harris. Pay close attention to her achingly rich and layered performance here of "Going Back to Harlan" and you get a taste of a singer of bottomless depth, intensity and genuine emotion. She is America at its most authentic and noble.

4 out of 5 stars From The Other Side.......2007-02-27

Maybe I'm too much of a male Chauvinist, but I was never very interested in the various Lilith Fairs. However, for some reason I picked up this CD (at the library - OK I'm cheap) and gave it a listen. It's really quite good overall, albeit a bit uneven. I've listened to it for a while now and it wears quite well.

The Editorial Review above says "Many of the artists give performances that eclipse their studio work" and that's certainly true for Joan Osborne. Her "Ladder" is definitely one of the best live performances I've ever heard. She's a great singer and she had a helluva band backing her up that day. (BTW, one of the other great live songs is "Naked Eye" by Luscious Jackson on Lilith vol. 3.)

Other particularly good songs on this CD are: "Sur Tes Pas" - Autour De Lucie; "I Want" - Dayna Manning; "Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner" - September 67; "Cain" - Patty Griffin; "I Don't Want To Think About It" - Wild Strawberries. I hadn't heard anything by any of these artists before, so I consider this quite a find.

In sum, a nice double CD with a nice range of unique works. As of this writing, it's available as "new" for $3.34 + s/h! Definitely worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Some great tracks, but disappointing overall.......2006-07-29

I bought this after hearing great reports about the Lilith Fair. This CD, however, does not match up with those reports. CD #1 is blah until Susanna Hoff's "Eternal Flame" and Sarah McLachlan's "Building a Mystery". CD #2 is an improvement, beginning with the outstanding "Water is Wide". The rest of CD #2 pales in comparison, though. If you have access to online music source, just download those 3 tracks and forget the rest.

3 out of 5 stars Lilith Fair Live.......2006-03-13

This recording was recommended by a friend and it would be true to say that there are some exceptional duets on the CD that make it worth while. It is a celebration of women in music and because of that there are some bands that I had not heard of before. Whilst it is good to expose people to different bands some of the musicians/songs were not 'my cup of tea' (so I consequently hit the forward button), but you never know they may grow on me. Overall I due enjoy this CD and certainly enjoy the majority of the songs.

3 out of 5 stars ok but.......2004-04-22

this band is ok, but for good music check out Jean Luc-Ponty.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent album.......2007-01-10

This is one of my favorite music CDs. The music has a haunting beauty about it, and although (from a guy's perspective) one or two of the songs are a little sappy/girlie, overall I still find this one of my favorite albums.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-02-23

I can listen to this disc over and over again. I have listened to it for about a month now, and am still not tired of the lilting voices. A wonderful composite of singers and songs.

5 out of 5 stars Four Fair Maidens Awaken The Celtic Muse.......2006-02-01

'Celtic Voices' featuring Mary McLaughlin, Connie Dover, Maireid Sulllivan and Emma Christian is a wonderous blend of traditional and contemporary folk compositions. This 14 track compilation moves smoothly and seamlessly through a fascinating soundscape of mood and emotion with each performer leaving her own indellible mark on the listener. There's McLauglin's brooding and deeply mystical 'Yundah,' Dover's festive 'In Aimsir Bhaint an Fheir,' and Sullivan's nostalgic and romantic 'She Moves Through the Fair.' Concluding with Christian's bittersweet 'The Goodnight Song' we bid a sad farewell, at least for now, to a beautiful listening experience that will call you back again and again to the Emerald Isle of Dreams.

It's simply the best compilation of Celtic music I've yet to come across. Definitely one of the essentials.

5 out of 5 stars really beautiful.......2005-08-15

this is definitely repeat listening material. the voices are so wonderful, the words are almost unnecessary. some of the songs bring tapping and swaying to your whole body, others bring tears. i am certainly glad i bought this cd.

5 out of 5 stars an amazingly beautiful album.......2005-03-15

This absolutely breathtaking album features four women who, even though are not as well known as artists such as Eyna, Loreena Mckennitt, Clannad and The Chieftians, have made a monumental impact on not only the Celtic music industry, but also in my own life.

First there is Mary McLaughlin who sings "Bring The Peace", "You Saw His Eyes", and "Sealwoman/Yundah". Born in North Ireland, Mary moved to London at the age of 18 where her music career began to flourish. The album begins with "Sealwoman/Yundah", a spellbinding, almost erotically charged song inspired by the Celtic legand of the selkies (sea-like creatures able to take human form). In it the "Sealwoman" (selkie) is torn between her home (the sea) and human love. Next up is "Bring The Peace" a lovely song about gaining wisdom after a period of seperation, and for coming "full circle." Rounding off the three songs Mary contributes is "You Saw His Eyes" whose message resonates any pop song that's out there today: to love someone only to be brokenhearted.

next up is Connie Dover, born in Arkansas and raised in Missouri. She sings "The Wishing Well", "In Aimsir Bhaint an Fheir", "Siuil a Ruin" and "Cantus". Praising the birth and final sacrifice of Christ as well as the devotion of Mary, his Mother, "Cantus" is exceptionally emotional. "In Aimsir Bhaint an Fheir" (at haycutting time) is a stark contrast to "Cantus". More lively and upbeat, this traditonal song finishes with a dance tune written by Phil Cunningham who has had a long and fruitful working relationship with Connie. The mood changes drasticlly once again for "The Wishing Well", inspired by a poem written by Padraig Prease. This poignant song is about the sometimes overpowerful feelings of love and the fear of "losing yourself" in the process. "Siuil a Ruin" (go, love) is the heartbreaking tale of a woman's love for a solider who has fled to France in times of war.

After Connie's beautiful voice, there is the equally stunning voice of Maireid Sullivan, who was born in Ireland and at age 11 moved with her family to San Francisco, and later moved to Melbourne, Australia. She sings "Colour Me", and the more traditional "She Moved Through The Fair" and "Waly Waly". "Colour Me", co-written by Maireid and guitarist Steve Wilson, paints a lovely picture of a river on a sunny day. "She Moved Through The Fair" has been a favorite among celtic artists (Lorenna Mckennitt also sings a rendition of it, among others)and "Waly Waly", another traditional favorite is sometimes refered to "The Water Is Wide"

Closing out the album is harpist and Isle Of Man native Emma Christian who contributes the songs "Ushag Veg Ruy" (Little Red Bird), "Oikan Ayns Bethlehem" (Birth In Bethlehem),"O Kirree, Tou Goll Dy Faagail Mee" (O Kirree Thou Wilt Leave Me), and (very fittingly) "Arrane Oie Vie" (The Goodnight Song). Sung in her native language, Manx Gaelic, Emma creates a serene, intimate atmosphere for her audience. Keeping close to her roots, all four songs are rich with the Manx tradition.

The Title for this cd (Celtic Voices:Women Of Song) is so perfect because I feel the human voice is one of the most complex and beautiful instruments. This cd clearly demostrates that in the stunning, impressive talents of these four women. This is a wonderful album for immense lovers of Celtic music (such as myself) and also for those who are new to Celtic music. I highly recommend it.

No less a suspect pop-culture authority than Howard Stern has repeatedly proclaimed that "everyone loves lesbians!" But what do lesbians love? Rhino Records boldly claims to know the musical answer to that question on this richly eclectic collection of female artists compiled for a lesbian audience. And if that's a bold--if readily transparent--marketing move, it shouldn't distract one from the charms of this cross-genre compilation. The songs here run the gamut from acoustic angst (Ani DiFranco) to pop (Wendy and Lisa, Jill Sobule), MOR (Taylor Dayne), folk (Two Nice Girls), and dance (Fem 2 Fem). k.d. lang contributes "Just Keep Me Moving," while cult fave Phranc gives Herman's Hermits hoary "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" a new slant. The emotions range from intense eroticism (particularly Janis Ian's sultry "Ride Me Like a Wave") to the steely pragmatism of Sandra Bernhard's remake of Paul Simon's "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover." -Jerry McCulley

I absolutely love the variety of artist and songs chosen for this cd.
It is an awesome selection of some of the greatest female musicians who support the lesbian lifestyle.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GREAT CD.......2006-05-07

i love this cd. has some of the best songs ever made for lesbians...hence the title. best song on the whole album is the last one...spent my last ten dollars on birth control and beer. that is one of the funniest songs ive ever heard. you gotta hear it. other great ones are i'll be your shelter,(sing it to my lover all the time) in or out, i kissed a girl, etc. but i think it should have had other really great ones like "perfect by doria roberts" "constant craving" kd lang "drive" by melissa ferrick...so many others i didnt mention but are much better than some of the songs on here. oh well...hopefully theyll have a volume two and well see those songs. if youre a lesbian then buy this album you need it. its really good.

    1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE.......2005-01-09

This is a horrible CD! It was like nails on a chalkboard listening to it then I finally had enough and took it out of my player and threw it away.

There may have been 3 songs on this CD that were actually OK, but the rest of it were these obscure songs that came from under a rock somewhere.

5 out of 5 stars I am not a lesbian, but this album may change my mind!.......2004-06-19

I love this album. I first became interested in female music when I heard Roshan Murthy sing about dookie. Basically, I hate this cd, but its worth listening to. Check it out and maybe you too will become a lesbian. Being a man, I dont think its possible for me to have any common interests with these women, but more power to you. I have guy friends who are interested in other guys....so I think I can understand the the women's struggle for equality.

Reviews of this group are not sufficient without dropping a few names for comparison.

If Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey or Janis Joplin were alive today, they would be singing with the Uppity Blues Women. Truth to tell, with modern recording techniques on her side, these other ladies are no real match for Ann Rabson's booming voice and sexy piano work. Do Your Duty, The Clock and Life Goes On are easily worth the price of the CD.

There is really no choice but to rate this a full 5 stars. I would be disappointed if the average were anything less. This is the one - if you have made it this far and still don't own this CD, buy it today - here or someplace else, I don't care. Don't put this opportunity off till another time; do your duty!

5 out of 5 stars Only a fool would pass these ladies up.......2001-02-24

I have always been a blues fan. One day while looking through Napster for new music, I came across these ladies. I was hooked. I immediately purchased every album they ever made. To call these ladies just another "band" is an insult to their talents. They are more a voice of today's women. Even though men will enjoy their rhythm and melodic overtures, only a woman can appreciate the true sultry heart felt lyrics. Even if you are not a blues fan, you are doing yourself an injustice by passing up this true bond of womanhood. We can all relate to what they are singing about. And fortunately, we can all laugh too. I applaud their ability to ignore the mainstream stereotypes and sing from the heart. I wish I could thank them in person for being the role model they have become for others and myself.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun.......2000-06-21

This is a great blues band and these songs were most of the best of the songs they played in the concert I attended. They can be a bit rauncy at times but the music is great and the lyrics can make you laugh out loud.
