This is an amazing collection of songs, all performed with such skill that even my 8-year-old son likes this CD. Brahms and Beatles, Mozart and Ellington, there is something here for everyone. And thank you, thank you, thank you for "Bassoonist's Holiday."

Bassoon Me!.......2004-08-09

I delight in the bassoon! What a unique and great sound, throaty and thrillingly coarse, yet soaring to sound at times like sax, like oboe, like cello, like a bunch of bassoonatics!

This is delightful collection of musical styles played by this innovative and talented quartet. Choosing to select pieces that are not typically of the bassoon repertoire, we go from Waltz to Gershwin to Broadway to Motzart to Lennon/McCartnye to Sibelius to most of us unknowns such as Mitchell Clarke to Duke Ellington.

All played with passion and gusto and excellent tonality, phrasing and tempo.

Bassoon Me again!

Brilliant Bassoonastics.......2003-09-27

This would have to be the best bassoon ensemble cd on the market. The arrangements are stylish and clever, and the performances brilliant! Fraser Jackson must be the most accomplished contrabassoonist I have ever head. This cd is a must for any bassoonists collection be you amateur or proffessional.

OUTSTANDING QUARTET.......2002-04-14

This disc is really superb!!! Not only is the playing at an extremely high level by the group, the arrangements are also outstanding. The Brahms is abolutely beautiful. The group goes from lightning fingers bravura to sweet soulful singing. It is a joy to listen to again and again.

I simply love the Caliban Quartet! They breath new life into bassoons! The way they bring out the music is simply magical. Not only do they sound good, their technical abilities are simply amazing!

Irreplaceable magic from the early 70s!.......2002-09-18

1 of the VERY best -- & least recognized -- art-rock bands of all-time, Caravan had beautiful musical interplay, gorgeous vocals, & a great sense of humor. Keyboardist David Sinclair provided 1-of-a-kind early-70s organ sounds, & the vocals by guitarist Pye Hastings & bassist Richard Sinclair (& later John Perry) weaved 2gether beautifully. This 2-CD set captures many (but not ALL) of their high-points, & is WELL WORTH the price. In fact, they coulda made it a 4-CD set....
5-star-worthy tracks include "Place of My Own," "And I Wish I was Stoned," "Aristocracy," "Golf Girl," "Nine Feet Underground" (especially the section called "Dissociation"), "The World is Yours," "The Love in Your Eye," "Songs and Signs," "Memory Lain/Hugh/Headloss," "The Dog, the Dog, He's at it Again," "Be All Right," "A Hunting We Shall Go," the live-concert version of "For Richard," & "Virgin on the Ridiculous." Several other tracks R just SLIGHTLY less than perfect, & it all SOUNDS great, of course.
(2 bad they left out "The Dabsong Conshirtoe," "With an Ear to the Ground You Can Make It," & "Surprise, Surprise," & U don't really need the original studio version of "For Richard" that's included here, I guess 4 contrast -- it sounds like a blueprint 4 the later live version.)
U should also check out Caravan's 1973 album FOR GIRLS WHO GROW PLUMP IN THE NIGHT (worth 4 stars EZ, tho U get more than 1/2 of it in this set), & when the booklet inside this package downplays some of their later work, don't Blieve it -- their 1976 album BLIND DOG AT ST. DUNSTANS is worth 4 stars, 2.
Fans of Camel, Happy the Man, Hatfield and the North, Soft Machine, National Health & NE early 70s British strangeness should really Njoy these guys, 2. If U've never heard them, & U Njoy off-the-wall musical brilliance, I can hardly Dscribe what U're missing -- check em out!

There are three tracks on this compilation from the outstanding 'In The Land of Grey and Pink' (Golf Girl, Love to Love You and Nine Feet Underground) but the breathtaking 'Winter Wine' is missed out. Its worth hunting out 'In The Land Of Grey and Pink' if you can. I think Amazon should be able to obtain it as it is available in Europe.

IF THERE EVER WAS A CANTERBURY SCENE..........1999-03-27

...it was led by Caravan. Leader and vocalist Pye Hastings produced the most regal of R&R ever ensembled. Culled mainly from, "Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night", and "...John Wayne..." , this anthology does present their finest efforts. I bet Princess Di loved this music with all her bleeding heart. (I'm sorry) Crisp ballads and cathedral-like R&R blend seamlessly to produce visions ofhigh times in gothic castles, hide & seek in the Soho, Picadilly self-indulgence, and memories of things UK that never even happened. Although your friends may tease you about your sudden embrace of the Pipe Organ, don't listen to them, listen to Caravan instead. 4 stars instead of 5 only because I don't hold a degree in British Studies and therefore do not know what they are singing about sometimes. Try the tunes "Headstone", and "Hugh Headloss", for starters.

Under Appreciated Prog Rock.......1998-09-19

Displaying a much lighter touch than most of their progressive rock contemporaries, Caravan in it's prime crafted a witty, complex, jazz and folk tinged blend of art-rock that has aged better than the music of the better known acts in that genre. Never ponderous or bombastic, Caravan exhibited a playful approach while producing their lovely music. The best stuff is on disc 1, which contains most of their two best albums, "In the Land of Grey and Pink", and "If I Could Do it All Over Again, Etc.". It's a shame that progressive rock is so reviled these days by the critical establishment; the era did produce some compelling music, and Caravan is a fine example.

Some of the best British Psychedelia. Very underrated........1998-09-09

Spacey and eclectic, the first CD of this set is a must for any fan of the best kind of psychedelia....British Psychedelia.

The musical backbone of the Isley Brothers(Ernie Isley, Chris Jasper, and Marvin Isley)come out of the shadows of their older brothers and become proven hitmakers as Isley, Jasper, Isley. From 1984-87 this group put out three incredibly underrated albums. Everyone has good, positive memories from "Caravan Of Love" and "Insatiable Woman". Yet favorites of mine were "If You Believe In Love", "A Once In A Lifetime Lady", and "Serve You Right". It is a shame that differences split this great group apart but if you are a true Isley fan, this should be in your collection.
