Of all the many "new Dylans" who emerged in the '80s, none was more impressive than Belfast singer-songwriter Andy White. With his scratchy voice and torrential, irreverent lyrics, he won critical praise on both sides of the Atlantic, but he didn't sell many records until his album, Teenage, yielded a hit single, "Get Back Home," in Ireland last year. That album was finally released in the U.S. in 1997, and it shows the influence of his membership in the trio ALT, with Tim Finn of Crowded House and Liam O'Maonlai of the Hothouse Flowers. His two partners (who cowrote five of the songs on Teenage) gave White an appreciation for pop harmonies and radio-friendly bounciness. This new accessibility welcomes listeners into White's wonderfully witty and evocative wordplay, where a lover's change of heart "makes me wonder what keeps the aeroplanes hanging in the sky" and where a gay cousin needs "a video of Torch Song Trilogy to tell his mother." --Geoffrey Himes

Album Description
It's been two and a half years since the release of the fourth volume in its series of teenage angst-ridden pop and teen ballads.
Now comes volume five, the last in the top-selling range, carefully compiled by the team that brings you the "Golden Age of American Rock 'n' Roll" series.
Previously we have mixed hits with more hard-to-find gems, but this final volume concentrates on the rarer stuff and includes some extremely collectable sides with plenty of tracks appearing on CD for the first time.
The sound quality is superb and the whole package is enhanced with a lavishly illustrated colour booklet, containing some entertaining and highly-informative notes by the ubiquitous Mr. Rob Finnis.

Astounding!.......2007-07-27
Amazingly, it is a British(!) company, Ace Records, that has earned the top honors for supplying collectors and casual listeners alike with the songs of the American top-100 from the golden (pre-invasion) era of rock and roll music. The demise of their "Golden Age of American Rock and Roll" series was, though to be expected, a traumatic let-down. But the folks at Ace have not abandoned us - they have other collections featuring music from the same era and their "Teenage Crush" series has managed to pick up where "Golden Age" left off. In this, the fifth volume, Ace pulls out all the stops. At least 16(!) of the included tracks are top-100 songs that have here-to-fore not appeared on quality legit CD. With so many of the congomerate music houses and independents alike practically abandoning the reissue of early rock-and-roll tunes, this piece from Ace gets fans of the genre standing and cheering. Just a few of the new-to-CD tunes include Frank Gari's "Lullaby of Love", no we're not the Everly Brothers Dean and Marc's "Tell Him No", "Ginnie Bell" from Paul Dino and Dale Hawkins' "A House, a Car and a Wedding Ring". Equally welcome tracks include Paul and Paula's "Young Lovers", Dick and DeeDee's "Young and In Love" and "Forget Me Not" from the Kalin Twins, all top-20 follow-up hits seldom, if ever, found on CD. And just so everybody can sing along with familiar lyrics, a few well-known tunes in the likes of Steve Lawrence's "Footsteps" and Dion's "Donna, the Prima Donna" round out the package. And Ace didn't stop with just searching out these rare tunes. The 24-page liner notes booklet has a wealth of information on each included track along with photos and illustrations further demonstrating the extraordinary effort put into this CD. Sonically, while a few of the tracks (1,11,16-18,20,21) may have been lifted from less than master tape quality sources, having these tracks in any reasonable sound quality would be an accomplishment. Several of the tracks do appear in stereo (2-4,7,9,10,13,23) and the remainder in remarkably clean mono. All told, this is a truly amazing effort on the part of Ace. We fans and collectors can only hope that the momentum continues and we don't have to wait another three years for another installment in this remarkable series of CD compilations.

Amazon.com essential recording
Director Todd Haynes's celebration of the sex, drugs, and rock & roll of the British glam era of the early '70s, Velvet Goldmine, would be nothing without the music that inspired it. A few unusual absentees (no Bowie, Iggy Pop, or New York Dolls?), but folks such as Brian Eno, Roxy Music, Lou Reed, and T-Rex are represented. Several covers from the glam era are performed without much deviation by two supergroups: the Venus in Furs, featuring members of England's elite--Bernard Butler, and Thom Yorke of Radiohead; and Wylde Ratz, featuring Mark Arm of Mudhoney, Ron Asheton of the original Stooges, and Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth. Strongest are the originals submitted to the film: Shudder to Think tame their own experimental excesses to put forth two glam-worthy originals with "Hot One" and "Ballad of Maxwell Demon." Pulp deliver "We Are the Boys," which runs amuck with the dramatic stagepower of the finest glam. --Rob O'Connor

A Cosmic Aural Orgasm!.......2007-04-17
I fell in love with Velvet Goldmine the very first time I saw it - in large part thanks to this soundtrack. But when you look at the roster of names involved with this project - Michael Stipe, Brian Eno, Thurston Moore, Placebo, Thom Yorke of Radiohead - it should come as no surprise -greatness begets greatness!
There are really no weak songs on this soundtrack. Needle in the Camel's Eye is simply infectious - this song - which opens the movie - was as subtle as a slap in the face and immediately grabbed my attention. The closing song - Steve Harley's Make Me Smile - conveys the sheer joy and passion music can provide. And all of the songs in between are even better.
We are treated to some of the biggest names from the era including Roxy Music (the exuberance of Virginia Plain), T-Rex (a dreamy Diamond Meadows) and the genius that is Lou Reed (Satellite Of Love) - a song that even my six year old niece adores singing. She knows this whole soundtrack by heart!
I grew up listening to Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, Iggy and the Stooges and Bowie thanks to my older cousins. But I might have never listened to Roxy Music or T-Rex if it wasn't for this album. If you like the songs on this album - you'll probably love a lot of their music.
However, in my opinion, the two best songs on this album - hands down - are Ladytron - performed by The Venus in Furs - a sort of supergroup fronted by Thom Yorke and 20th Century Boy - covered by the brilliant juggernaut that is Placebo.
Ladytron is just a gorgeous number - a swoony almost psychedlic tune and Thom Yorke's voice is incredible as always as he sings - I use you, and I confuse you...
As for 20th Century Boy - this song isn't just the highlight of the soundtrack - it's also one of the highlights of the whole movie. Brian Molko's stage presence is phenomenal and whether you are listening to this song on CD or watching him perform it live in the movie - he sells this song completely with a sexy swagger to his singing.
Molko has frequently been called a ladyboy - and he possesses a physique that can only be described as petite - but believe me - listen to him perform this song once - watch him live in the movie - this ladyboy has got more cajones than most singers twice his size! And if you like this song - you should definitely check out the rest of Placebo's music. They are one of the most under appreciated and under rated bands in the world today.
Rounding out the soundtrack, Ewan McGregor channels Iggy Pop in T.V. Eye, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers proves that being a world class wanker doesn't prevent him from also being a fantastic singer. Rhys Meyers has a lovely voice and range which he utilizes briliantly in the songs Tumbling Down and Baby's On Fire.
The rest of the songs including Hot One, Ballad of Maxwell Demon, The Whole Shebang, 2HB, Personality Crisis, Bitter-Sweet, and We Are The Boys by Pulp are all solid numbers, sonically capturing the whole mood of that era in music. As I said, there are really NO weak songs on this soundtrack.
The only thing I was disappointed about was that they left out a couple other really good songs - Rhys Meyers lovely rendition of Sebastian - which is a shame - because he sings it beautifully - and Gary Glitter's uber cheezy/sleazy number Do You Wanna Touch Me?
This album is definitely worth every cent and it's one you will never grow tired of listening too. A must have for any person who has a genuine passion and appreciation for good music!
a wondrous album.......2006-08-20
this is the soundtrack that led me into the wonderful world of glam rock! it is outstanding and i could just play it again and again.... it is certainly one of the most brilliant albums out there and probably my favourite soundtrack of all time.
The best soundtrack album EVER - even if Bowie wasn't involved.......2006-08-12
Simply, this is the BEST soundtrack CD ever recorded, bar none, hands down, no contest. Why? On first...or millionth...listen, the entire album captures the film, the world, the era, the style, and the sound expertly, effortlessly - but it's not just an empty gesture or a slick impersonation, VG amplifies and expands the authentic glam vision to create something somehow more glam, deeper, more intense, more addictive, sexy, heartbreaking, uplifting, even dangerous - once you see the movie, and once you hear these songs, you'll play them over & over, come back to them year after year, and they'll become the fabric of your own life - or your imagined life, past, present, future, or even a fond, faded memory of what never was. The most jaw-dropping achievement of the album, aside from impeccable taste (Eno, Roxy Music, Lou Reed, T Rex, anyone?) is that since Todd Haynes didn't get permission from Bowie to use his own music, he went out and recruited the coolest rock icons and upstars to create songs that amazingly feel like they are long-lost nuggets circa 72/73, but were really made in 99 - it's not just playing dress up, it's redefining a whole musical and cultural era. This is Haynes' BEST film, and this is the BEST soundtrack. Sadly, as usual, the movie was a flop upon its original theatrical release - I recall going to see if on a rainy Saturday matinee on its first-weekend release, and there were only two people in the theater, me and the usher. No matter, this album is a real achievement, never to be repeated again, so savor it now.
Wow! I mean just wow!.......2005-12-18
Even if you don't want to watch the movie (and why wouldn't you) you have to buy this soundtrack. This is the soundtrack that proves that other soundtracks are merely prepackaged garbage. No soundtrack so captures an era and a mood as completely as this one (ok there's also the 24 Hour Party People soundtrack but that's IT!)
These songs are riveting, amazing, great. Twentieth Century Boy is worth the price alone. I want to find every version of this song (I heard a version in the Truman Show as well - a 50s rockabilly version) and play them on repeat. The movie did such a great job of capturing the 70s versions of Bowie and Iggy Pop, it'd almost be blasphemous for the soundtrack to fizzle. It doesn't fizzle. This is the CD that you wish Bowie would have put out (he's done great songs but he's also done mediocre ones) and this is the CD that you can play loud and play on repeat.
There's really not much more to say about it but the gushing joy of a fan.
Very uneven.......2005-10-16
I got this cd becasue one i am a fan of glam rock, it was a good price and i am a fan or radioehead. How can you have soundtrack that is about the glam rock scene of the 70s and not include bowie. All of the covers are not nearly as good as the originals. The only good songs are Virgina Plain and Satelite of Love and Camel in the eye but those are the original songs and i have those songs allready. The songs of Venus and Furs dispointed me it seem Thom was trying to sound like Bryan Ferry on them it would have been better if he just used his own voice. If you want a good glam rock soundtrack may i suggest Hedwig and The Angry inch most of the songs are sung by one singer who has a better voice then most of the rock singers out today. That soundtrack acutally does not sound like a soundtrack which i think is best i am not a big fan of various artist cds. I ended up selling it for more then i paid for it.

Crotchety critics complained that this Glaswegian quartet sounded too close to cult Memphis band Big Star for their own or anyone else's good, but Bandwagonesque proved that unapologetic homage can sometimes work. The Fanclub's mesh of yearning, ethereal melody and cranked, feed-backing guitars came together superbly on "The Concept," "Metal Baby," and the thrashing "Star Sign"--mini-blizzards of mellifluousness that yoked Alex Chilton to Crazy Horse and the Ramones. Dismiss "Alcholiday" as "record collection rock" if you must: it doesn't make the track any less sublime. --Barney Hoskyns
Customer Reviews:
crisp and fresh.......2007-05-25
15 years after its release, this album still sounds really crisp and fresh. I can picture this being on the radio today even moreso than in the early 90's. Great listen from a bunch of great Scottish lads.
Perfect Introduction to the POP ROCKIN' Brit group: Teenage Fan Club.......2007-04-18
BANDWAGONESQUE was my introduction to Teenage Fanclub. This is "The Fannies" 3rd release and their first successful achievement. It also gained notoriety by beating out Nirvana's Nevermind, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, and R.E.M 's Out of Time as 'Album of the Year' by Spin magazine.
This album's lyrics and melodies shows that the Band were highly influenced by The Byrds, The Beach Boys, and of course Big Star.
I really can't believe Teenage Fanclub weren't considered the future of British Rock. Oasis and Blur won over that Crown. Blech! ...Kind of sad since Teenage Fanclub features 3 Master singer/songwriters in Blake, Love & McGinley.
BANDWAGONESQUE has so many wonderful highlights in twelve songs. It seems like it would be a 'Greatest Hits' for any above average Rock band. Although their later stuff is just as Good. Check out 1995's Grand Prix, which is even more lush w/ guitars a shinin' bright and clear, also no fuzz-boxes. Yep, BANDWAGONESQUE & GRAND PRIX are my two favorite studio albums by this marvelous band.
My favorites on BANDWAGONESQUE include: Opener - "The Concept" - "December" - "What You Do to Me" - "I Don't Know" - *Star Sign* - "Metal Baby" & "Sidewinder" but ALL are close to perfect 'lil pop-rockin' Hits, well to me at least.
Memories of all kinds.......2007-04-02
This album reminds me of a great alternative rock radio station in Minnesota circa 1991. Just at the time I thought "rock" was dead, along came that radio station and albums like this. "The Concept," "What You Do To Me," and "Star Sign" received regular rotation on the old KJJO, and what great tunes they were. Over the course of time this album has become a favorite in my collection. Good times. Great tunes. If it weren't for my discovery of classic alternative bands like this I'd probably be listening to country-and-western now. Ugh. :)
deserves its classic status........2007-02-13
from the stunning opener "the concept," with its wonderfully lyrical guitar solos, on through the closing intrumental "is this music?" this is a power pop classic. other standout tunes include "pet rock," which includes great hard rock guitar, "sidewinder," full of exquisite harmonies, and "guiding star," a song of majestic gently beauty. this is a recording all rock/pop lovers should have.
Pure Classic melodic pop!.......2006-12-04
If you love perfect early 1970's style pop, this is for you! One of my all time favorite cds, rich with lush harmonies and rock and roll guitars. Well constructed songs that rival any of the many bands they have been compared to (Big Star, Badfinger.)
This is their first commercial effort and all of their other releases are great as well. Start with this one and buy your way through the collection. This is an underrated gem which rarely strays far from the cd player.

THE SOUNDTRACK....................2006-01-13
It seems like yesterday, but it WAS long ago. I had gotten into a fight with my family and took off from home. I spent a few hard days on the street but soon was picked up by some dudes who said they could help. They took me to an old warehouse filled with MAD stolen goods. There was a whole society living in there. It was pretty great. They said "anything you wanna do, do it!" I said "You got any cigarettes?" They said "Regular or menthol." We were a family... and we listened to the bodacious beats of the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES soundtrack. It was great. Especially when Master Shredder would make his dark and mysterious entrances and we would play track eight, SHREDDERS SUITE.
Luckily the Turtles themselves showed up and kicked arse all over the place, and showed us that we were all goons.
SPIN THAT WHEEL is a pretty cool track, for sure.
Back to the Future.......2005-12-19
Hey if you say you weren't a fan... I'll show you a liar... 19 now Proud to say was a fan! Really just glad the stopped after #3 cause they ran outta ideas.. They never did put Brain and his BIG @ss Robot in there... Nor BeeBop or Rockstedy If I recall.... This what we do - MC Hammer ( My body is my body, My time is my time) and Of course Ninja Rap - Vanilla Ice Himself
Turtle Power!.......2005-11-07
Turtle Power just explains how good this cd is. this is one soundtrack that i heard lately that has all the songs that are in the movie non added nor tooken out. this is an awesome cd you got to try it out.
if you liked this check out Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 and 3
Yeah, I Own It. So What?! (3 Stars).......2004-10-05
Honestly, I own this CD only because when it came out I was 14 years old and I was infatuated with Ninja Turtles at the time. You couldn't tell me that "Turtle Power" (track 5) wasn't a tight jam back in 1990. I mean, come on, I was still a kid. I still like the song even today (don't tell anyone though). There are some typical 90's styled jams on here though. MC Hammer starts things off with the typical Hammer style track "This Is How We Do". It comes complete with the obligatory chorus from B Angie B. Most of the album jumps back and forth between hip hop and dance music. It's a pretty solid album for kids. But if you're my age and you're still grooving to this.....I'd have to say shame on you. That is, of course while others are looking. When they aren't looking, I'd probably be dancing along with you. This is a fun and carefree soundtrack for a great movie. Nothing more, nothing less. Enjoy.
Standout Tracks: Turtle Power - Partners In Kryme, This Is How We Do - MC Hammer, and Spin That Wheel - Hi Tek 3
TMNT - The Real Deal.......2003-10-28
I've been a TMNT fan for about 10+ years, I am 17, I have recently refound my love for them! This and the other 2 cds are a must have for any TMNT fan of any age! It's from the late 80's so it must be good :)

Most bands that come from Nashville wear cowboy hats write songs about punching their horses. No such problems with the Pink Spiders, who at an early age sound like they traded in their Oak Ridge Boys CDs for the complete back catalog of New York's mid-'90s garage rock revivalists, D-Generation. Like that group's breakthrough album, No Lunch, this disc was also produced by Ric Ocasek, the former Cars front man who has built a second career out of creating hits for guys that dress like his old band. Cue a fast and furious racket of skuzzy guitars, blasting power-pop drum fills and skinny-tie sound effects that turn up pleasantly stupid guilty pleasures like "Saturday Nite Riot" and "Little Razorblade." --Aidin Vaziri

Good up and coming band!.......2007-01-03
The album is good and when I saw them warm up for Good Charlotte I was impressed with their stage presence.
Fantastic.......2006-11-26
This album is fantastic if not perfect. I like the first track "Soft Smoke" which has great guitar playing at the beginning of the song. Wicked song. The second "Saturday Nite Riot" ain't as good as the first one but still good. My favorite songs on this cd are "Modern Swinger" a extremely catchy song and "Little Razorblade" a awesome track. I usually go for stuff like The Click Five and Mcfly but I do like the Pink Spiders too.
Really Great.......2006-11-06

I love this CD. It's soo amazing. I bought it the day it came out and listened to it a lot and then I bought a couple more CDs a couple weeks later, but I just kept coming back to this one. I can't even describe it's amazing-ness. It's like a combination of some retro influenced rock with modern touches. I also read an article on them in AP and they were so fabulously cocky (in a good way of course!) that you can't help but love them. I love every single song on the album! I'd do a rundown of the songs and rate them, but they'd all just be 10/10, so what's the point? I will tell you that my favorites are:
Modern Swinger
Still Three Shy
Pretend that this is Fiction
Little Razorblade
and EVERY other song!
Please buy this. You won't regret it.

Totally Tubular Dude.......2007-05-09
I was a little disapointed that it didn't have the upbeat tracks i have come to know from the other movies. Granted i did buy and listen to the soundtrack before i watched the movie, but after watching the movie the soundtrack became better as i could picture what was happening in the tracks.
totally awesome soundtrack! .......2007-04-22
Alright, so my review is obviously 5 stars! Here's why: For a movie soundtrack, this is probably the ONLY cd that i've actually enjoyed all but one of the songs on it. Sure, people have complained that it's lame bands/groups and it ruins the movie, but as a standalone soundtrack, it does really well even if it wasn't from the movie. RIP IT UP by JET is one of my favorites, along with LIGHTS OUT by P.O.D., and "Black Betty" by BIG CITY ROCK. Klaus Badelt adds to the cd some orchestral pieces that make it a complete soundtrack. The only downside is that i REALLY want there to be a complete orchestral cd from this movie - alot of the score music from the movie is really great so hopefully one will be released soon. So forget what everybody else says about this soundtrack being terrible and "it's not worth the money"...JUST BUY THE SOUNDTRACK!!! I guarantee that you will like at least 1/2 of the songs, if not all!
Next Best Thing.......2007-03-25
I would have perferred they released this soundtrack and a score soundtrack. I did enjoy this CD and don't regret buying it. It's just my prefence. The music score in TMNT, mainly the main theme, sounds just like the main theme in Catwoman, which I thought was strange, but it seems to work. Would've been cooler to hear some hint of the first live action movie's theme included since this is a loose sequel to it. I really would have liked the score released but this is the next best thing and a lot of the tracks have a nice beat to them. Good CD to blast in the car!

Awesome song for a awesome band.......2005-10-24
Okay if you are into a punk rawk disc then this is the buy for you. Alot of fun songs with a christian message. And even for people who are not christian this is an awesome pickup full of great lyrics, good guitar, awesome drums (go drums!), and sweet bass. THere really is nothing wrong with this cd. Best song of course is Punk Rawk show and teenage politics in my opinion.
I also have to agree with the review stated earlier, that is an awesome talent for this band to be able to copy BLink 182 when they came out before them. FOR THE REVIEWER WHO WROTE THAT: MAKE A REVIEW THAT MAKES SENSE AND ACTUALLY LISTEN TO THE CD NEXT TIME!
pretty swell.........2005-09-21
first off, i love the review that said they were copying blink 182.. that's a talent to copy another band when your cd comes out years before..
amyway.. i used to have this one, and i'm pickin' it up again.. not the best of mxpx but a good solid cd.. i really can't think of anything better than punk rawk show.. that one gets me every time..
it's enjoyable..
Great CD!!!.......2004-04-19
This is one of their early cds but it is still good! This cd includes one of their most famous songs "Punk Rawk Show". Even though some people might not like it because it is "Not Like They Are Now" it is still a good cd and a new person to the band should get this cd.
ROCK ON MxPx!!
Pokinatcha is better.......2003-07-20
The followup to pokinatcha wasnt as good. Sure it has the songs punk rawk show, sugarcoated poison apple, and americanism, but his vocals on this cd are not as raw and hardcore like on pokinatcha. But it's mxpx so i would by it. Just to add to a collection.
Amazing!!!.......2003-01-30
This is their most political work to date. I would recomend this one. Not as good as Pokinatcha but it is worth the price. Relive MxPx's glory days with Teenage Politics.

This soundtrack is a MUST have! (Just like the movie).......2006-06-15
The "Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen" movie soundtrack is basically an all pop album, and the artists performing the songs are the latest soloists and groups around! If you're throwing a party, or just want something cool to listen to, THIS IS THE ALBUM TO BUY!
Confessions!.......2006-03-20
Simular to the Freaky Friday original soundtrack, this is a fun and hip soundtrack! This soundtrack is a perfect delightment, having some tracks from Lindsay Lohan, the star of Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. I was looking for the most of the songs that weren't in the soundtrack, though. Here are the songs that were featured in the movie, but didn't make it onto the soundtrack!

Those were the songs that didn't make onto the soundtrack. The album producers DID have enough space to add a couple more onto the CD, but just chose not to (why?). Anyways, great soundtrack to listen to and totally worth the listen.

A Scoop on an Awesome CD.......2005-07-12
1. Drama Queen 4/5- This song is good, but it gets a little annoying/repetitive after a while.
2. Ready 4/5- I like this song, it's got a catchy beat to it.
3. Ladies Night 4/5- I like this song too. Just kind of a "fun" song!
4. Perfect 1/5- I personally cannot STAND this song. A lot of pop fans like it, though.
5. Tomorrow 3/5- This one's just OK. That says it all about this song.
6. What Are You Waiting For 5/5- I love this song!
7. Na Na 5/5- I love this song, too! It's funny!
8. 1,2,3 5/5- This is my favorite song on the CD! Catchy tune.
9. Don't Move On/Livin for the City/Changes Medley 3/5- Ok. I like Livin for the City, but I wasn't happy with the way the 3 short songs were smushed together.
10. Boom 1/5- Can't stand this one either. It's rappish.
11. A Day in the Life 4/5- I like this song, but it's definately not Lindsay's best.
12. The Real Me 4/5- Great song! Not my favorite, but it's good.
13. Un-sweet Sixteen 1/5- This song is just plain run-around-with-your-hands-over-your-ears annoying!!!
14. Only in the Movies 2/5- Boring, annoying song.
Overall, this is one of the best CDs I've ever bought! Definitely worth it. I suggest buying it if you like fun, layed-back music. :)

All-time # 1.......2007-08-01
I'm stoked to see that everyone else gives this 5 stars. 33 PERFECT reviews what else can you say? This is my favorite album of all time. While part of the reason might be the stage of life I was in when I first heard it and the memories it evoked, I am still able to listen to it today and enjoy it just as much. This is a prototype for what good punk music should be. So much talent here that it's hard to describe. The fast, thrashing guitars are able to mix perfectly with melody. Obviously there isn't even close to a bad song but my favorite is "Solitaire". Strung out is by far the most underestimated band around and people who write this off as 'same old stuff' should be shot. This is the best!
Strung Out at their best.......2006-09-17
Well, this was my first Strung Out album ever. It's probably in the top 10 albums that I own. Let me start off by saying, that this CD is just..amazing. Strung Out has always amazed me, of how they can combine melodic punk and add metal stylings. They are unique, and each album they released after just got better. Each member has something to offer. Jason has great lyrics and I do like his voice quite a bit. Rob and Jake, they can play some crazy riffs and solos, simply awesome, my favorite guitarists along with "Flipper" from Lagwagon. Jim Cherry (rest in peace) was a great bass player, and it really sucks that he had to die (oh by the way, check out Zero Down, Jim's other band, theyre awesome), and Jordan is a sick drummer, he's fast and dishes out great talent. Anyway, on to my review. I remember putting this CD in, and usually the first song on a CD i never listen to for some reason. I'll just skip to a random song, or the one that I heard before. As Jim Cherry started laying out his bassline, and then the guitar chord rang, i knew from that second this CD was going to be a good. I then heard the second song, I didnt skip it, the third song, didnt skip it, and so on. This CD, i dont have to skip any songs. Its that good. I knew only one song from Strung out, and that was "Bring out your dead" which is an all time favorite of mine. Overall, this album will get you in a good mood, its just wicked. I read a review on here of a guy listening to it while driving and he hit 120mph or so. hahaha. Well, its true, i listen to this all the time while i drive and i lose myself. Luckily there are peoples breaklights to warn me to stop at a redlight or other wise id breeze right through it, cause im too busy singing. I suggest this album to anyone who likes melodic punk, old punk, even metal, or if you just want to hear some sick music. Strung out never disappoints. I really want to see them live, but i dont think will happen any time soon, they wont come to my town. Anyway, do yourself a favor, buy this album. You'll love it.
Don't drive listening to this!!!!!!!!.......2006-06-18
This album should have a surgeon's general warning. Screw drinking and driving, listening to this while driving is about as hazardous as it gets. I didn't realize it till I got booked for doing 120, so I recommend you listen to this in a room where there aren't alot of valuables to break. By far the best Strung Out album, though I highly recommend Twisted by Design.
Best of the Best.......2006-03-27
While I love Twisted by Design and American Paradox, I always come back to this album when I think of the best work that Strung Out has to offer. This is the album that made this band. Another Day in Paradise and The Skinny Years ... were good, but sound like crap when compared to this album. I've been a punk-rocker since I was pre-teen, I've gone to shows and played in shows, and I will tell you from experience that this is what every punk band wants to sound like. Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues sounds so good you could die without having heard another punk album and be satisfied. Enough said.
A Great Punk Album.......2006-02-22
Being a pretty hardcore Strung Out fan, I was first introduced to their latest album, "Exile in Oblivion". I fell in love with the vocal stylings and mix of metal and punk in this group. After snatching up more of their older albums, I purchased "Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues" and was not at all disappointed. This record is fast, edgy, and as raw as good punk gets. It's a shining example of California punk back in the mid nineties. Favorite tracks include Firecracker, Solitaire, Gearbox, Monster, Bring Out Your Dead, Somnombalance, and Wrong Side of the Tracks (THE best track on the album I think). Any fan of punk rock should make a place in their collection for STWB.

Teenage Fanclub were touted as the next big thing for three minutes after its 1991 major-label debut, Bandwagonesque. That album is still the band's best--a sly, effortless approximation of Big Star, capturing most of that band's charm with only a fraction of the emotional turmoil. Six years and a few music trends later, Teenage Fanclub were still writing and singing sunny, optimistic tunes that sound great blasting from a car stereo. Songs from Northern Britain doesn't match the band at its peak, but "Ain't That Enough" is the best Byrds knockoff released in years, and "Start Again" sounds chipper enough to make you believe no romance is too doomed to be saved. The band's three equal songwriters--Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley, and Gerry Love--are all incurable romantics. When written on paper, a lyric like "can't feel my soul without you" is easy to make fun of, but when their voices melt together with obvious feel-good sincerity, only a cynic could complain. --Keith Moerer
Customer Reviews:
Being positive isn't cool , but it's easier to listen to .......2005-08-21
If you don't know anything about this band , I would say only that they will make you very glad you're not deaf .
If you enjoy harmonies and a 60's sensibility together with solid songwriting , then look no further .
The song on this album called AIN'T THAT ENOUGH is just fantastic - it is extremely uplifting and that is how the band's music affects me , though not all their songs have that sort of direction or mood .
I also recommend other albums of theirs such as GRAND PRIX , HOWDY and the latest one MAN MADE .
We need more uncool positive 'vibes' in this world and this band makes an important contribution to that , so they're actually fulfilling a purpose .
Buy and luxuriate in this band's world-view .
Their sound turns golden.......2005-01-20
I really really enjoy all their early work, and it's hard to pick a favorite from any of their diverse albums. But I feel that when they made this, they developed a sort of timeless feel that resonates through later listens. Upon first hearing it I wasn't that impressed, I thought this needs to be more spur of the moment, but then slowly and surely I realized it was great in a different way. They were experimenting and letting the sounds just simmer throughout the album, until you get to "Speed of Light" then you feel completely dumbfounded and trust wherever they wish to venture next.
Hornby opened the door..........2004-11-24
Like a lot of more recent Fanclub-fans, I was introduced to this album by Nick Hornby's "Songbook." The music in here was described as comfort-food, and the absolute antithesis to Suicide's "Frankie Teardrop." That alone got me interested. Other descriptions brought up Beatles and Byrds influences, which can only be a good thing.
Yet I held off for a while, put off by negative comments by some critics and local record store employees who seem to think that the band was playing it too safe with this one, trying too hard to sound pretty at the expense of their earlier, harder-edged sound. Then I spotted a used copy for five bucks, picked it up, popped it in my car stereo and realized just how useless rock critics and certain record store employees are.
This thing hit me like a bolt of lightning- pure goodness from start to finish. Unlike a lot of its grunge-era contemporaries, this disc actually *improves* my mood. And, like Nick Hornby when writing "Songbook," my mood is in need of improving pretty frequently these days. Without going into any detail at all, I can say that I identify with Hornby's comment that, sometimes, music should be a comfortable thing to turn to in a time of need rather than a constant challenge. Obviously not nearly every one of my many, many, many albums is what you would call "comfort food"- I have my share of music that's a bit tougher to absorb, and that will challenge expectations. But I am beginning to appreciate the value of music that you "get" right away and that stays with you over time like an old friend or a favorite worn-in pair of shoes. If you are too, you can't go wrong here.
bold statement: my favorite album.......2004-11-24
a solid record from front to back, packed with perfect heartfelt pop songs. the album revolves around central themes of love and home, which while bittersweet, are filled with optimism and never fail to improve my mood. this album has easily gotten more spins than anything else in my collection, yet i never tire of it and cannot help singing along at full volume every time. i honestly feel sorry for people who have not been exposed to this album, or who fail to take the time to appreciate its greatness. drop your prescription for prozac and pick up "songs from northern britain"
Pleasant retro folk rock.......2004-11-20
Bought this on the strength of "Aint that Enough" which was included on the Nick Hornsby Songbook CD-Book, and which sounds like the 1965 Byrds, the original masters of Folk-rock, more or less channeled (better than an imitation) very, very accurately. In fact, several songs sound remarkably like re-channeled Byrds. Several other strong classic influences are clear, including the Beatles, and even Neil Young on Mount Everest. One doesn't get too much sense of imitation though, more like homage, these guys sound quite sincere. They not vocally quite up to Crosby, Clark and McGuinn, or for that matter John, Paul and George, but the songs are cheerful, lively and musically sound.
So recommended it to older listeners like myself because of how well they keep the spirit of the original greats, and people too young to have even heard Mr.Tamborine Man or Younger than Yesterday because this is fresh sounding and musical.
