Customer Reviews:
excellent followup album - a must have!.......2005-01-11
Tina, like all classic songwriters, has a way of drawing you into her world. Her songs speak to everyone who embraces the human condition. I enjoyed not only the meaning behind each gem on this album, but also the attention to detail in the arrangements and production choices. I would highly recommend picking up both albums to add to your CD collection.
Keeping an unspoken promise - a GREAT RECORD.......2004-12-30
Keeping an unspoken promise ...
Tina Shafer is no newbie to the music industry. A veteran songwriter (her songs have been performed by the likes of Celine Dion, Billy Porter, Sheena Easton and many more), an enthusiastic advocate for songwriters and musicians (She runs the legendary New York Songwriters Circle) and a teacher, Tina recently released her sophomore album, "Promises to Eve".
A funny story I always tell about Tina's music is that it was playing in my office one day when a fellow musician, a Joni Mitchell fanatic, walked in the room and was very surprised when I explained to him that I am not listening to a rare unknown Joni album, yet to Tina's first album, "The Backyard Sky" ...
On "Eve" there's more of that signature pop/rock/folky songwriting only it feels like this time around, as great artists do, Tina took her time and allowed influences, experimentation and most of all, variety. Her heartfelt lyrics and voice is an obvious element throughout the record, but those who know Tina's work will be pleasantly surprised to hear more rock influences (The great "Who Are We Now"), a cute little folky rap (on the title track, with a vibe that reminded me of some of Prince's lesser known work) and a collaboration with the legendary Phoebe Snow. Other personal favorites include the sentimental "Dear Norman" and the poppy "That Was Me". Such a breath of fresh air to listen to a singer/songwriter talk about real life, enjoying some uplifting moments (the infectious "Hello Happiness") while not being afraid to face some of the darker ones, and present a work that once released, lives on its own.
great songs,true artistry..impossibel u say? read on! .......2004-12-23
well well, what have we here ... a record with NO ulterior motive (read: not desperate for a hit, or to sound like the "state of the charts").chords!! melody!! sophisticated harmonic structure! influences from bach to joni with a wink to the poets of the south!!
lest you think that can only mean it's a self indulgent "artiste" high concept "alt" snooze/groanfest; think again. because you will LOVE this record; a record of musical beauty, and lyrical honesty. can you tap your foot to it? you betcha (jeez, the songs are in 4/4; you dont need a map) ... can you sing along? people,i'd worry for your vitals if you didnt walk around with "hello happiness" or "that was me" tatooed in your noggin after one listen.. so why aren't they hits? trust me, they're (tragically) too good, too grown up, too ....un-clearchannel, to be "hits", by today's hip-hop/-modrock band/ her last name must be simpson/lavigne - criteria. i don't care, and neither should you. FIND this record yourself. make it YOUR record. let it be a gift you can give others. they won't know about tina shafer. change that. share great music! P2P is more than a computer concept; it's a concept that's coexisted with all great art since art began: people moved by aesthetic beauty and wanting to show other people. then other people love it: "popular". that's where "pop" comes from, my friends. it's a broader term than you could ever imagine. that is why, year after year, even in the barren wasteland that passes for pop these days, the biggest, leggiest hits are always the ones no corporate lackey saw coming; the true stars are still born, not confirmed by focus research. tina shafer's the only kind of star i need. cause she makes beautiful music that i can love and learn from ( i haven't heard a more gorgeous song than "gone but not forgotten" this, or any recent year). alright, enough from me. you could have bought it by now. go. do yourself a musical favor and BUY(own) this rich, honest document; one from the heart from a fearless artist, and an inspiring woman.
