As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Beautiful.......2007-06-15

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

Complete?.......2007-04-07

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

Marvellous!.......2005-11-26

I don't play violin, and I can't even read music, but as a classical music amateur I find this CD outstanding. Even an incompetent like myself can easily understand why Perlman is regarded as one of the greates violinists ever. This is a marvellous collection of pieces. The rendition of "Chanson Russe" by itself is, in my opinion, worth more than the price of the CD. If you listen to the audio samples on Amazon's pages and you like violin you will surely understand why I like this CD so much. I am grateful to People like Perlman, who make this world a better place to live in.

All I can say to this CD is it's the best I've ever heard. In this CD, Itzhak Perlman truly demonstrates his best performances of the past years. I have always been a great admirer of Perlman, but since I own this CD, it's all I've listened to for the past three months. I myself play the violin and Perlman has become an inspiration to me, almost a musical idol. For any of those violinists out there, especially young musicians, who don't feel any excitement about playing the violin, listen to this CD and I promise you, you will strive to being able to play like this man does. He is truly the best musician I've ever known.

Acker Bilk is great but this is a terrible CD and should not reflect upon him. These are reworked cuts that were probably never meant to see the light of day. The best thing about this CD was the case it came in which I can use again because the CD will go missing!

For all those who really love the pleasant and unmistakable tunes of the sixties, the emblematic figure and warm charisma of Mr. Acker Bilk will stand for many years.

Although the songs are done well, "Stranger on the Shore" is not the song that was the number one song of the year in 1963. It reminds me of Rick[y] Nelson's performance at Madison Square Garden; it was not the same! Stranger on the Shore has been made "new and improved [?]" and does not have the Leon Young Corale nor the distictive ending. Ending,what ending! This is not the song that was my closing theme song as a disc jockey.

This is a masterpiece. Actually, Stranger on the Shore was always considered "our song" by my ex-husband and myself. Unfortunately, we are now divorced, but the song brings back so many wonderful memories and brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it played.

Those who at one time toyed with the idea of becoming Tori Amos fans but ultimately rejected the idea (face facts: her music can be alienating) will want to throw out a life raft for Charlotte Martin who, with On Your Shore, manages to send Amos-like shivers up the spine without overblowing the oddball, quirky, I'm-so-complex stuff. The vibe throughout these 13 songs is pure Amos--piano-driven, dark, theatrical, sweepingly orchestral--but doses of Kate Bush-style button-pushing and Cure-modeled insouciance bump up the interest level. So does the songwriting. "You can't judge the love by the lover/The sky by its thunder," goes the opening verse of "Beautiful Life," and similarly contemplative concepts course through songs like the first single "Every Time It Rains," also a lyrical stunner. The sole cover here, a tender take on the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" presented as a bonus track, swats away doubts that Martin is a pour-it-on performer. Best of all is how this CD bodes for female singer/songwriters to come. Instead of dumbing down the songs and playing the pop tart or, worse, drowning us in a mellowness that makes us search for our own pulse, Martin's music probes the girl within. I actually heard a song by Charlotte on "So you think you can dance" and thought, wow, who is that?!?! I ran to the computer and ordered her cd Veins. EVERY song is great, so I ordered Stromata. Every song kicked butt!! So I ordered On your shore. Wow!!! I too am a huge Tori fan, but I wouldn't call Charlotte a knock off, why can't there be more than one piano playing chick? Gives us more to listen to and enjoy! Charlotte is extraordinary, touching, and angelic. Run fast, and get her cd's today!!

Love the music but will never buy this CD. The few cd's i've had that were copy protected i've still copied. It was a pain though so i just don't buy them anymore.

Outstanding yet Underrated--but doesn't it always seem to happen that way?.......2007-06-13

Even though this album is a little hard to find new, I encourage you to buy it used here at Amazon. It is an incredible album, filled with emotion-packed songwriting and impressive delivery. Charlotte is a classically trained opera singer, and her vocal ability is one of her best attributes. This is showcased in songs like "On Your Shore" and "Every Time It Rains." Comparisons to Tori Amos are inevitable, especially with songs like "Steel" which seem in terms of piano structure very influenced by Tori. But I do not believe the comparisons are a bad thing, because the music is reminiscent of Tori rather than a copycat version. Charlotte loves layering vocals, and that is a constant theme throughout the album, especially in "Something Like a Hero"--this is one of On Your Shore's definintive tracks that will give you goosebumps by the end of it. The production value of this album is incredible. Many people were involved in the recording and producing of this album, but it was mainly produced by Charlotte and her husband Ken Andrews.

This is an incredible album that did not receive the promotion it deserved from RCA Records. Had they pushed "Every Time It Rains" as a single and officially released "Limits of Our Love" as the second single which they planned, she would have gained more exposure in the mainstream world. But she is doing great on her own now as an independent artist, and I encourage you to check out her second album "Stromata" as well, which was released on her own record label Dinosaur Fight in 2006.

not a bad little cd. Nowadays getting an album with at least 3 good songs on it is a score. she is like a more rock based tori amos, but not a knock off. Individual and unique. Not an amazing ALBUM , but has some great songs on it. DO IT!

I never needed light to see you.......2007-02-03

Charlotte Martin is an artist that demands attention. Just when you think you can pigeonhole her into one type of music she releases something wildly unexpected. Her voice can acclimate to any kind of music, which she proves throughout On Your Shore (and all of her other releases for that matter). Her piano ballads have the ability to induce tears and her more in your face songs definitely raise eyebrows. If you've yet to hear any of Char's music, expect to be wowed.

Charlotte Martin has so many things going for her it's not even fair to other artists. Her voice is incredible, her lyrics are intensely relateable, her piano skills are excellent, and the band that acompanies her is equally great. Mix all those together and you're gonna have one heck of a CD. However, On Your Shore is entirely different from other releases. Each CD has it's own overall 'feel' and On Your Shore is no different. On Your Shore is focused more on the piano than, say, Stromata, but not as much as In Parentheses. She's got the resources this time around and she uses them to amazing effect.

On Your Shore has a little bit for everyone. If you're up for some ballads look no further than Your Armor, Steel, Sweet Chariot, and even Beautiful Life. If you'd rather hear some mid-temp songs On Your Shore, Limits Of Our Love, Up All Night, and Something Like A Hero are all up your alley. And then, for those of you who want to see how well Char's voice sounds whilst backing a driving beat, look no further than the awe-inspiring Haunted. Special mention goes to Haunted because of how much it sticks out and how it sounds nothing like anything else on here. From the brooding verses complete with distorted/whispered vocals to the eruption in the chorus, this song has it all. Something Like A Hero, likewise, proves to be the other true standout. Clocking in at just over six minutes it sort of takes you on a ride. It starts out harmlessly enough but ends in a climax that you most likely won't expect and surely won't forget.

My favorite songs are Your Armor, Everytime It Rains, Steel, Haunted, and Something Like A Hero. What really gets me is how easy it is to keep coming back to Char's music. At the most random times one of her songs will just pop in your head and you'll feel the need to get out her entire catalog and listen to all of it nonstop. There's no doubt that Charlotte Martin's fanbase will only grow and she'll only get better so there's no better time to hop on the bandwagon than now.

Mostly Majestic.......2007-05-17

Most of the tracks were excellent but some were a bit long winded.Tracks by Spencer Wyatt best on the disc and made it all worth while.

Do you like ethereal New Age? Gotcha covered. Does Boogie piano get your toes a-tappin'? Check. Is Swing more your thing? It's here. All fine reasons to add this sound track to your music collection. As for the movie, I like to think it Carrey's best work. The man has the most expressive face in Moviedom. Regarding the story, it's set in the early Fifties during the rabid Communist scaremongering headed by Senator Joseph McCarthy. One result was the blacklisting of suspected Communists and sympathizers in liberal Hollywood, of which our protagonist Peter Appleton became a victim.

To hear the roar of the crowd as the player goes in to slam dunk the basketball in the professional sports arenas,this film equals those thrills for the audience as Jim Carrey (Luke Trimble)takes us through the mind of someone that has amnesia and unwittingly becomes the hometown war hero set in 1945 period. Stars abound in this film like character actors Martin Landau and James Wittemore.Boy meets girl,they fall in love,then a twist in the plot as Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is accused of being a communist,similar to the Army McCarthy hearings for those old enough to remember.It all turns out like everyone wants.....Ed Lynch 10/29/06

Boogie Majestic.......2003-08-07

This soundtrack is the best soundtrack I have heard in a long time. Bringing the swing big band music was fantastic.I wish they would have included Pennsylvania 6-5000 in the soundtrack though. This by far is the best movie soundtrack next to Swing Kids. So buy this soundtrack. This is real music.

An answer for a question from Texas.......2003-02-15

Music fan from Texas, Yes both songs are there and as strange as it may sound, those where the two songs that cought my attention when I saw the movie. The one with the clarinet is called "Stranger on the shore" while the one with the piano is called "Boogie Woogie Stomp" I believe. The soundtrack as a whole is flawless and I strongly reccomend it.

This is very much like early Fairport Convention, only a little more amateurish (Fairport were consumate pros, after all) and certainly more strange -- but in a good way. Pretty interesting stuff.

I totally agree with the reviewer from PA, that the guitar playing on this is exceptionally good, but even the other musicians are incredible too. The drummer plays some drum parts that are amazing, it has great piano, and I also agree that they do indeed sound like Fairport with Sandy Denny, but not all of the songs. They're quite different because of the sound of the lead guitarist's playing, which can be pretty heavy and even "psychedelic" on several songs, and last but not least, Celia Humphris has a beautiful voice, and if anybody even comes close to sounding like Sandy Denny, it's Celia, she just has a great and wonderful voice. Every song on this CD is excellent, but there's some that stand out from the others. Any fan of British folk rock should hear this and add it to your collection, you can't go wrong, and you certainly won't be disappointed, this was a great group, with great musicians, and a fantastic female singer. I just listened to this for the first time. It is really wonderful and refreshing. The interplay between musicians is quite magical actually, and the singing is both earthy and etheral.

Decent U.K. Folk Rock.......2001-11-02

Those who love Fairport Convention's "Leige and Leif" album, as I do, may want to check this one out. Trees recorded 2 albums of British folk rock in 1970. This is the second album, the first being "The Garden of Jane Delawney". They come across here as a kind of second tier Sandy Denny era Fairport Convention, complete with a female vocalist (but no fiddle). The guitar playing is quite good. A couple tracks drag on too long and become monotonous, but there is much that is worthwhile. Obvious highlights include the tracks "Soldiers Three", "Murdoch", and "Sally Free and Easy", which features an extended, atmospheric arangement reminiscent of Fairport's version of "A Sailor's Life".

The Master of the Wind Orchestra.......2001-02-20

I know of no composer or arranger who writes more beautifully for wind orchestra than Percy Grainger. It is a difficult medium, much harder than an orchestra to make sound terrific. This is probably due to the lack of a single homogenous sound equivalent to the orchestra's strings. The woodwinds are too diverse in timbre, and the brass generally can't sustain (physically) the constant playing such a role demands. But Grainger consistently rises above these problems and gets the most gorgeous sounds from the group. Furthermore, he writes fascinating counterpoints and the whole is constantly filled with eccentric touches of harmony, orchestration, rhythm, and the like.

This recording, with the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra, is superbly played. Although one may quibble at times with such things as an occasionally too-wide saxophone vibrato, those are minor indeed. In particular, the classics of the wind orchestra literature, Irish Tune from County Derry and Linconshire Posy (the movements Harkstow Grange and Rufford Park Poachers stand out even in this august company), are magnificent in every respect. Also worthy of note is the Colonial Song, with its beautiful sonorities; and the vibrant percussion of The 'Gum-Suckers' March. This CD is a must-have for anyone interested in wind music, in the art of arranging, or simply in imaginative and fascinating music.

This ensemble really does a good job playing on this CD--The Lads of Wamphray, Irish Tune from County Derry and Molly on the Shore in particular. Personally, I don't care for their interpretation of Lincolnshire Posy. However, it's still some great playing. Wonderful job!

They were born to play Grainger........1999-05-24

I have been playing Grainger since my freshman year in high school and never have I heard Grainger played with so much passion as when I listened to this recording of the Royal Northern College of Music. Lincolnshire Posy shines brighter than even the Eastman Wind Ensemble's greatest rendition. Bravo!

Itzhak Perlman plays Fritz Kreisler.......2007-01-11

I love this album. I owned it in a long play record for years and now have the CD to listen to. I love violin music and this is the best.

Kreisler flies again.......2006-04-26

One of my earliest memories is of listening to Kreisler playing his works on 78 rpm records. Many of these are what Perlman is playing oon this collection. The notes make a disclaimer: Perlman is not trying to play these "like Kreisler".

Well, I own a Kreisler CD of transcriptions -- a couple of them, in fact, and the characteristics that endear his playing to us Perlman has in full measure. Perlman is fully immersed in Kreisler feeling, something he attested to in an interview ("The Violinist", on DVD) and I humbly suggest that he is unsurpassed in this repertoire. The pianist is uncannily like Kreisler's own accompanist, and the sense of nostalgia is very strong indeed!

There are three other violinists --at least-- with Kreisler collections out" Gil Shaham, Joshua Bell, and Kennedy. Of these, I think Gil Shaham does a beautiful job; I have not heard the other two.

I recommend this recording very highly indeed. The playing is as full of insidious charm and romantic almost to the point of sentimentality, which in my view is not a bad thing at all. (Gil Shaham's self-effacing style is lighter, providing a contrast for those who think that's what they want.)
