An extraordinary 2-CD reissue of three early-'70s British folk-fusion albums by this little-known but quite accomplished English group out of Coventry. This collects all the material from the LPs "An Evening With Dando Shaft" (1970), "Dando Shaft" (1971), and "Lantaloon," from 1972, along with a few added outtakes and rarities. The musical calibre and adventurousness on all three albums was quite high: at a time when many of their hippie contemporaries were groping in the dark (both literally and figuratively...) the members of Dando Shaft were quite solid in their musical abilities and conceptual/compositional structure. Their original material was marked by jazzy, dancing mandolin work, hearty trad-folk vocals and a touch of loping Balkan melodies, the group sounded quite accomplished and assured, and yet loose and limber enough to be kinda fun as well... and still as fresh sounding today as it was back then! Fans of contemporary acts such as The Incredible String Band, Pentangle and Planxty owe it to themselves to check this one out.

Fans of Pentangle take note-some very tasty work here........1999-04-25

This long missing entry into folk/bluegrass should please anyone who love either one. The high quality of the playing, especially on the driving "Wave Upon The Ether", will draw you into Dando's web. Vocals by Polly Bolton evoke someting of a cross between Sandy Denny and Maddy Prior. Group vocals have the feel of Pentangle. They throw a curve in song structure. Vocals and instrumentation would give you the idea that the songs were based in country or blugrass but they have more in common with Bulgarian folk tunes. Inconsistant but with songs like "Coming Home To Me", "Kalyope Driver", "Riverboat" and especially "Waves Upon The Ether" a welcome reissue.

Great British Isles Acoustic Music.......2002-12-31

Whoa! Don't let Amazon's editor's slander of this group as a "prog rock" outfit turn you away. Dando Shaft is a wonderful short-lived acoustic folk combo from the tail of the 1960's and beginning of the 1970's.

Dando Shaft consisted of three male songwriters/pickers Martin Jenkins, Dave Cooper and Kev Dempsey. They shared vocal duties with the excellent Polly Bolton on these two albums. Rhythm was provided by double bass and either congos or tablas. Like the best acoustic music, some of their music simply refuses to age.

This release couples their scintillating second album ("Dando Shaft") with their third LP "Lantaloon." While "Lantaloon" suffers from a wealth of very well played dull songs, "Dando Shaft" is a fine album that merits a five star rating. Particular highlights are "Coming Home to Me," Polly Bolton's ethereal overdubbed duet on "River Boat" and, well, just the whole damn album.

Hippie music.......2007-05-14

I listened to this a long time ago as a senior in High School and love'd it then and it's just as good today. Their mandolin and guitarist have great skill and it shows in every song. The singing, well, it could be a bit better but I have thoroughly enjoyed this album. Brings back those memories of patchouli oil, smoke, and a girl I'll never forget.
