      5 out of 5 stars Lovely music!.......2001-12-18

These CDs are for lovers of Irish music and of the "old-timey" sound of John McCormack. The songs themselves are lovely, and James Flannery sings them exactly as they need to be sung... in a simple and straightforward manner. The music is evocative of the sound and spirit of a long-ago time. The accompanying book gives interesting background information about Thomas Moore and also about the songs. Good listening for a rainy day or a snowy night with the fire blazing.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 2 CLASSICS OF THE GRAMOPHONE.......2006-07-14

Two great classics of the gramophone at a seriously low price. A real bargain.

The first recording of Britten's Serenade is still (pardon the pun) peerless. Recorded in 1944 with a youthful Peter Pears and the inimitable Dennis Brain, it captures the work when the ink was still barely dry. Pears was significantly younger when this was recording was made than on the stereo remake from the 60's. The voice is fresher and more mellifluous than ever. This pays big dividends in the opening Pastoral, in Tennyson's elfland horn calls and in the evocation of the chaste and fair queen. The Lyke Wake Dirge is perfectly steady and perfectly intonated. Perhaps only the Keats Sonnet carries more weight in the later performance. And the horn playing of Dennis Brain is a marvel. Have the natural harmonics of the Prologue and Epilogue ever sounded more haunting? When did the Queen and Huntress ever step more lightly? Was the Dirge ever more scaring? All more than worth putting up with the slightly claustrophobic acoustic for. A cast-iron classic recording if ever there was one.

And the same is true of the Walton from almost a decade later. Edith Sitwell, naturally enough, knows just how her poems should go. She has a most musicianly ability to keep a firm hand on both the rhythm and the sense (such as it is at times) of her words. Pears, too, always maintains a highly musical as well as verbal sense in his recitation - even if there are times when he almost can't resist breaking into song. Anthony Collins is the conductor and leads his ensemble with enormous verve and panache. There are times when façade can seem an uncharacteristic piece for a lad from Up North. This performance shows that Walton actually invests the bohemian sophistication he acquired during his time at the Sitwells with some real Oldham cheek - just listen to the way that Collins helps 'I do like to be beside the seaside' slide insouciantly into the fabric of the music.

As with the Serenade, the four Britten folksongs find Pears in upliftingly fresh and youthful voice.

        A real bargain.

        5 out of 5 stars LIVING HISTORY.......2004-05-05

Considering that the earliest recording here dates from 1944, the sound quality on this disc is nothing short of marvellous. The 1944 item is the Britten Serenade, with the youthful Pears in superb form, his diction clear enough to make a printed text superfluous. Of the other items here, Facade was originally recorded in 1953 or 1954 depending on which page of the leaflet you believe, and the four Britten folksong arrangements date from 1959 and 1961.

This is living history. Britten's Serenade was only one year old when he first put it on record with Pears and the late Dennis Brain. It is an out-and-out masterpiece as far as I am concerned. An instrumental prelude and postlude, with the horn solo sublimely performed by Brain, flank six outstandingly fine poems, linked by images of darkness but otherwise strongly contrasted in style, period and idiom. If I have a favourite among them, it would have to be the spooky Scottish ballad, but that only makes it a favourite among favourites. Britten's resourcefulness in responding to their shades of shade is what elevates this from a refined anthology into a haunting, beautiful and intensely personal and original miniature chamber cantata. What, I have to ask myself, would be the market value of a recording of Wachet auf directed by the composer? We have come to take some wonders for granted.

I am a strong enthusiast for Walton, although not so much of one for the general ambience of the 1920's, Galsworthy, Brideshead Revisited and the rest of that precious and over-refined scene. The direction here is from Anthony Collins not Walton himself, but I don't suppose it's any the worse for that. The 21 Edith Sitwell poems here represent the final selection that poet and composer settled on for a revival of the work in 1942, although there seems to have been some further tinkering with their sequence in case anyone cares. They are extremely arch, smart, arty and obviously the height of sophistication in their time. I can still raise a faint smile at their clever-clever artificiality without feeling the smallest urge to remind myself of anything I once knew about the hidden references, veiled allusions and other intimations of being top of the modish intellectual froth. Pears shares the recitation with the author, even breaking into semi-song at one point, and the sound is once again admirably and remarkably clear. Words are not provided, as they are not for the folksongs either, so I have to assume that the cost-line had hit the budget at that point. The real attraction of Facade, for me, is Walton's contribution, typically wry and lively. His talent had obviously done the trick in getting him adopted by the Sitwell circle, and I can imagine with what determination he ensured that he would never be subjected to what was known under the Roman empire as `relegatio' from such metropolitan sophistication to his native Oldham.

Britten achieves the minor miracle of reconciling me to English folk-song settings. In general I loathe English folk-songs and in particular I loathe the cowpat school of English composers who were so fixated with them, consummating their iniquities with musical settings of my beloved Housman, who does not go to music in the least. An irreverent listener is likely to recall Peter Ustinov's immortal parody of these settings `Little Miss Britten', but genius will win in the end. The sheer distinction both of the harmonisation and of the accompanimental writing wins even me over. All told, a historical treasure, outstandingly well preserved.

        Customer Reviews:

        3 out of 5 stars Tepid performance.......2004-04-12

This recording has wonderful, clear sound quality, but the performances, and especially the conducting, are not up to par. Jessye Norman sings everything beautifully with rich tone, and sounds magnificent in her two arias, but she is a lifeless Aïda. She pastes on Aïda's emotions. Her portrayal is too shallow. She sang this performance when she was still a lirico-spinto, and not yet a full-blown dramatic soprano. Her soft high notes are pretty, but hardly breathtaking and she cuts some forte high notes short, like the high B-flat on the word "Ah!" in "Ritorna vincitor". Pedro Lavirgen is a squillo-less Radamès. At least he puts a little more emotion into his singing than Norman does. His "Celeste Aïda" is surprisingly effective and well sung. His high notes are secure, but he shamelessly milks "Sacerdote, io resto a te" by holding on to one of the high G's for an inordinately long amount of time. Fiorenza Cossotto is in great voice, but very surprising for her, she is very subdued in this performance. She is not dull by any other mezzo's standards, but she is dull by her own standards. Her Judgement Scene with the priests is not included in this highlights CD. Her high notes are rock-solid, which at least partially makes up for her less-than-total dramatic commitment. The baritone who sings Aïda's father is serviceable, but by no means memorable. The conducting of Nino Sanzogno is lifeless. He uses the same, moderate tempo for every scene. When the tempo should speed up and be dramatic, like at the end of the Amneris/Radamès duet, he lets the tempo drag. Some of the brass playing is less than spectacular, the mentioned duet being an example. The trumpet playing in the Triumphal March is mediocre; many of the notes sound like they are about to crack. The sound, as mentioned earlier, is superb. There is no audience noise except for applause, and no tape hiss. The orchestra and soloists could have been miked a bit closer, but they are very audible throughout.

This recording could have been great, but an atmosphere of lethargy pervades it, with Sanzogno's conducting being particularly dead.

        4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Perfromance.......2000-01-06

As a Jessye fan, I was very excited to come across this recording. It's a live performance. with excellent recording quality, and the performance is fantastic. Cosotto as Amneris is simply electric, and the rest of the cast is superb. One or two flat notes do not mar my respect for jessye's interpretation, but could explain why this was not recorded by a major label.
