Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
She was born down south, lives out west, and has a mind that wanders to wherever a good story lines up with a strong melody.
As an artist, Eileen Hemphill-Haley tends to focus on the inevitable effects of human nature, how personalities repel, enhance or enliven one another -- what she calls "the reactor fuel of relationships." She then belts out her views in a musical style best described as "story-oriented folk rock," with "characters that breathe, and stories that ring true." (Frank Gosar, KLCC FM).
Listeners agree that the lyrics and melodies of Eileen Hemphill-Haley's songs are equally compelling, and that the lovely combination of hook and wit is so inviting that it naturally makes people want to sing along. The fourth daughter of a career Army officer and Irish-American housewife, EH-H was raised in an environment of constant change, moving from one town to another, being inadvertently immersed in different American subcultures with every new assignment. It was a life that helped her develop a keen sense of observation about the world around her, as well as a basic appreciation for everyday people, and the diverse ways Americans live out their lives. And being raised in a large family surrounded by women, she learned the value of speaking up and not being afraid to express original views. With guitar in hand, she has managed to take expression to a new level, and make it an art all her own.
Product Description
Fine collection of northwest folk-rock and Americana songs by award-winning songwriter and performing artist Eileen Hemphill-Haley. The lyrics outline stories that are easy to relate to, held up by inviting sing-along melodies.
"My concept for this project is based on how I view myself as an artist. In my writing, I tend to focus on the lives of everyday people, and the kinds of things that affect us all. To me, ordinary people are extraordinarily interesting." -- Eileen Hemphill-Haley

Awesome CD.......2007-02-23
Mindi has done it again - I love this CD just as much as I love her first!
It's a nice album with repeats of her first album in most of her songs........2007-02-19
I'm a big Mindi Abair fan. The first time I heard her was when I was in my car waiting for my day to start at work. I changed the station to the jazz station and I was blown away. I didn't know the artist. And...yet I loved her sax playing so much that I was almost late for work trying to get the artist name. The announcer came on after the song was done and said Mindi Abair. I jotted her name on a piece of paper. Later that night when I got home, I order her first album and her third because I thought the sound was on either one of them. Besides I wanted to see what else she could do. I got those CDs and I popped the 1st CD in the CD player, and it blew me away. The CD itself was excellent! This last week, I popped the other CD in, her latest one....I heard the songs. It didn't impress me that much. Like all artist now pop and Jazz, their songs sound alike from one song to album over and over again. I did like a lot of the songs though. Her voice is nice. It doesn't impress me when she puts her voice as a sound bite. I like it when she sings the song though. It was still fun, but I hope the next one she gets out of the same routine over and over again. Be a little more like Kenny G than let's say some pop princess like Christina Aguilerra.
Life Less Ordinary - Mindi Abair.......2006-12-13
This is the second purchase I have made of the music of this artist. As before, there is quite a bit of energy expressed in the music. Some how this recording seems a bit more forward and I have always wondered why the studios seem to do this to a female artist. This is an excellent artist and I really do enjoy her presentation.
Another Hit!.......2006-11-13
Great CD, a must have for the sax lover. With her vocals and unique style, much more then just a sax CD.
Three Cheers for Mindi.......2006-11-10
Each succeeding CD released by Ms. Abair gets incresingly better and better. Just when I thought smooth jazz had reached its peak, Mindi comes along and releases another CD to exceed all expectations. Buy a copy of this CD, throw it into your player, and I guarantee you won't let it stop spinning until you have heard each song at least 5-6 times. Each and every song is peppy and upbeat, conveying that essential groove to it that Mindi expresses so well. You will not be disappointed with this latest release!

If the American pop culture profile of French composer-jazz pianist Michel Legrand doesn't seem what it once was, don't be misled: his European indie film scores continue six decades on, now numbering nearly 200. But Legrand's most beloved work remains the lovely, evocative themes he created in the '60s and '70s, including "I Will Wait for You" from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Thomas Crown Affair's "Windmills of Your Mind," the theme from Summer of '42, and his work on Barbra Streisand's Yentl. This collection marks Legrand's first solo piano recordings, presenting those and other film score highlights in spontaneously improvised performances that offer a glimpse of Legrand's musical soul. If, as in "Windmills," his enthusiasm gets the best of him and he occasionally lapses into flights of melodramatic pianistic self-parody, there are more than enough sublime moments here to compensate, especially on lesser-known songs like Best Friends' "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" from The Happy Ending, and Brian's Song's "Hands of Time." --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Michel Legrand.......2007-03-12
This is a great CD! Sound is awesome. I highly recommend it.
Sunlight on his fingertips.......2005-08-10
Sunlight on his fingertips
The very bright talent of Michele Legrand you can feel especially when Maestro is playing piano himself.
I heard some orchestra performance of Legrand before, that was good, but I was still thinking about him just like about pop music composer.
Now I think different - he is Genius!
all the stars you've got.......2005-01-29
Bill Evans once said that technique in jazz "is the ability to translate your ideas into sound through your instrument." If that's the case, Legrand possesses technique in spades.
Before commenting on this rewarding disc, a few words about Legrand himself:
Is there a better songwriter or a more versatile all-around musican alive today? I think you have to go back to people like Gershwin and Billy Strayhorn to find a rough parallel to Legrand's multifaceted, genre-crossing genius. A pupil of Nadia Boulanger (who studied with Faure and taught many important American composers, including Aaron Copland and Philip Glass), Legrand is an heir of the great French tradition of music--but one who has chosen to express himself through popular songs, film scores, and jazz. He possesses that rare combination of an absolutely rigorous theoretical knowledge of music and an intuitive, spontaneous instinct for both melody and improvisation. He combines exquisite refinement with a popular touch, a need to communicate directly with all who love music. To me, his work represents the most perfect expression of such typically French traits as lightness, insouciance, wit, melodic charm, and direct emotional expression since Poulenc.
Here you'll find many of Legrand's signature songs--"I Will Wait for You," "The Windmills of Your Mind," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?," "The Hands of Time," "You Must Believe in Spring," etc.--reharmonized and enriched in stunningly beautiful solo recreations. Those unfamiliar with Legrand's pianistic abilities will probably be surprised by what they hear, for he's no part-time piano tickler. He can easily hold his own in the company of the best modern jazz pianists. He has a wonderfully refined touch that is incapable of making a harsh sound and a profusive sense of fantasy that keeps you constantly guessing as to where the music will go next. Yet you always feel satisfied when you find out, because Legrand possesses a composer's comprehension of harmony and form. And his own style is in no way compromised by an occasional nod here and there toward Bill Evans, Erroll Garner, Rachmaninoff, and so on. (Please: disregard the Amazon reviewer's remark about "flights of melodramatic pianistic self-parody." It's called a stride chorus, and it's just one example of Legrand's surprising way of recasting these songs--and of his encyclopedic command of jazz styles.)
This disc represents the essence of Legrand. It really should have been recorded a long time ago, but the fact that it has captured his undiminished abilities as he enters his twilight years lends it an added poignance--a sense of "just in time!"--that makes it all the sweeter. If you're already a Legrand fan, it should be a self-recommending treasure, and if you're a fan of great piano playing or of sophisticated jazz treatments of great songs, odds are you'll find this a very rewarding disc indeed. For me, the highlight is this version of "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" in which every note seems inevitable--not at all an easy thing to make happen in an improvisation.
Miles Davis once said of a Duke Ellington recording, "Give that one all the stars you've got." That's the way I feel about this disc, and I thought that phrase "all the stars you've got" was appropriate because it almost sounds like the title of a Legrand song.
Maestro Legrand , at last !.......2004-10-10
Legrand has recorded at last one of his more intimate renditions to himself with his most remarkable themes along his brilliant career .
From a summer of 42 , The windmills of your mind (The Thomas crown afair) , what are you doing the rest of your life or the romantic Umbrellas of Cherbourg ; all those unforgettable themes are played in this album for piano solo in the real intimacy between him and the listener .
Legrand is the golden master of soundtracks in France and one of the top in the world . He owns that inner vision to catch the spirit of every movie he accompains . He composes music as he was a real director movie . The psychological concerns , the romantic efluvies and the precise and lyrical atmosphere , with that touch of class, artistic elegance and sublime eloquency .
Think also in the important recordings with Miles Davis . That issue will give you the size of that artist and anothe point to remark . In 1954 , Legrand made a golden jewel : I lvoe Paris (See my review) that has become through the years in the most famous and the best album of instrumental music ever recorded .
What other background do you need to acquire this gem ?
For Jazz piano purest... Only!.......2002-09-07
I love the music of Michele Legrand! It is a rich mixture of
graceful tones and notes, that create memories of a certain
time and place in each of our own lives.
When accompaned with great orchestration Its wonderful. When done in a jazz piano style, its not as good. Not to take anyting away from the talents of Mr Legrand as a pianist. Its just that like hearing a lusher, grander version of his music. So if you like jazz piano music, and Michele Legrand.
Then this is the cd for you!

While not as audacious as the Trainspotting soundtrack (which effectively introduced the general public to electronica), this disc quite au courant also has strong marquee value. Beck's "Deadweight" is loungy, nicely juiced and very cool. REM's low-key, quasi-ambient "Leave" is an intriguing detour for Stipe & Co. All this plus exceptional cuts by Folk Implosion, Luscious Jackson, Sneaker Pimps, The Cardigans, and the Cheez Whiz splendor of Elvis Presley's "Always on My Mind." --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
life less ordinary song not included.......2006-05-17
i really love this film! its one of my favorites, and the album i have owned for the past 7 years. my favorite track by sneaker pimps "velvet divorce" is what got my attention. but i was dissappointed about that song not being on the soundtrack where Robert gets fired, then dumped and gets drunk and passes out in his bed...I really wish it was on there and if I knew who sang it or the name of it at least! If anyone out there knows, please email me to idontcarewherejustfar@gmail.com. thanks so much!
surprisingly good.......2004-05-24
For a movie as notoriously lousy as A Life Less Ordinary, it bodes well for the continuing talent of director Danny Boyle that the music on here is so solid. It's definitely not all good - the stripped down version of REM's "Leave" and Prodigy's "Full Throttle" are nothing special. But the new ones that really work - the cuts by Sneaker Pimps, Beck, Luscious Jackson, Ash, and especially Folk Implosion's sleak "Kingdom of Lies" work great with the random Bobby Darin and Elvis inclusions. This compilation's a good time.
Starting to sound dated.......2004-05-11
This used to be a 4-star album back when it first came out, but unlike other albums that seem to be built to withstand the test of time, the soundtrack to "A Life Less Ordinary" now sounds dated. Unfortunate indeed, considering how strong the opening is, with Beck's classic "Dead Weight", but in this case it is understandable why the used copies are flooding the Amazon marketplace.
Great Compilation.......2003-11-27
I don't think there is one bad track on the entire CD. I never saw the movie, but LOVE this soundtrack. From ELVIS to Bobby DARIN, to Sneaker Pimps, this CD has it all. I loved it, very eclectic and just plain great music. BECK too!
Missing One of My Favourites!.......2002-08-24
I was pleased to see that most songs from the movie were included in the soundtrack, but the Oasis song, 'Around Are Way' that Ewan McGregor sang a few bars of in the movie was missing, and I would really have liked it if they had included the version of 'Beyond the Sea' that Ewan McGregor and Cameron Diaz sang together. That was one of my favourite scenes in the movie, and since Ewan has such a beautiful voice, I would have liked it if that version had made it onto the soundtrack.

Album Description
In 2004, writer Amy Krouse Rosenthal asked her friendand longtime Chicago pop/rock artistTony Rogers to write music to accompany the Crown release of her deliciously funny and thought-provoking new book, "Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life." Books don't usually have soundtracks, but that's the point: this is no ordinary book.
Rogers wrote and recorded three brand new songs to go along with the book (including the official theme song, "This Is My Story") and has released them along with a 10-year retrospective of his critically acclaimed work: "Encyclopedia, Vol. 1"
A perfect introduction to Tony's music (much of it with Chicago pop veterans The Good) "Encyclopedia, Vol. 1" is a double extra secret treat for longtime Good fans, as it features previously unreleased solo recordings, previously unreleased Good recordings, and Tony's favorite Good AND solo recordings, all on one massive, totally remastered, 17-song CD that features a total of SEVEN NEVER-BEFORE-HEARD TRACKS.
Customer Reviews:
Pop music for intelligent people.......2005-02-21
Tony Rogers is an amazing songwriter. He takes "pop" music to a level that is at once thought provoking and entertaining. This man is on par with Paul Simon and Billy Joel.
"Encyclopedia Volume 1" is a perfect primer to his music.
Some of the tracks are previously released either by The Good or by Rogers' critically acclaimed show "Pop Psychology".
Some of the tracks were inspired by (and written for) Amy Krouse Rosenthal's book "Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life."
There are also some previously unreleased songs for kids.
"If You Wanna Be a Baby" might be the best song I have heard this year and I make a living writing about music.
Other standouts are "Peach Tuxedo" and "Cash Room B."
If you only buy one album this year. Make it "Encyclopdia Volume One."
I think I might be more excited about this release than my own album which comes out next month. So if you buy two albums this year...
Seriously, you work hard for your money. You want to spend it wisely. Buy this disc. Your ears and your brain and your tappin' toes will thank you.

I wonder why it doesn't include Beck. Maybe because its an ASH single. And, its one of Ash's best songs in my opinion. Definitely a more complete sound now that Charlotte is in the band and this song is an excellent example.
A nice selection from the album!.......2000-06-15
This CD is a great appetizer for those who don't want to hear the whole album. The only bad thing, is that it doesn't include Beck's "Deadweight". With that song on, it would have make an excellent choice.
