Product Description
Never The Same celebrates the lost years of British folk: the 1970s. As far as mass popularity goes, the folk scene most definitely peaked in the 1960s with Bert Jansch, Anne Briggs, Martin Carthy, Davy Graham and all. By the end of the '60s, it had morphed into folk rock (Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span) or singer-songwriters (Nick Drake and John Martyn), prior to disappearing into a netherworld of beards and real ale. Here, for the first time, is a compilation of the lost wonders of the Leader label, repository of the hidden history of British folk music. 13 total tracks by featured artists Lal Waterson, Nic Jones, Alistair Anderson, Aly Bain, Dave Burland, Dick Gaughan, and more. Honest Jons. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

George Strait's work in the '90s is like a hall of mirrors: each new million-seller mirrors the previous million-seller, which mirrors the one that came before. And yet the master's touch never fails, and the music charms and sometimes thrills. Drawing again on his steady stable of writers--Jim Lauderdale, Dean Dillon, Steve Bogard, and Jeff Stevens--and adding Melba Montgomery's careful pen, Strait's latest is a fitting end to a decade he helped define for country music. The material isn't especially impressive given the routine, radio-safe themes, and Strait's band--the crème de la crème of Nashville (Randy Scruggs, Stuart Duncan, Paul Franklin)--plays impeccably but with little distinction. Still, even the middling material, delivered in Strait's lush, plangent tenor, has hit potential. Except for the two-beer ballad "That's the Truth" (one to drink, one to cry into), which explores the borders of deception and honesty, and the soaring, climactic "Meanwhile," which very convincingly weaves reality and fantasy, Always Never the Same is good but never great, consistent but never classic. --Roy Kasten

4 out of 5 stars It's Good, But George Is Losing Grip.......2005-07-12

As a George Strait fan, I have seen many a singer come and go.
George has stayed at the top for over 20 years, which is not easy for anyone these day's.
This album is a good album, but it does have some exceptions.
While there are still some traditional country songs on this album, like "That's The Truth" and "4 Minus 3 Equals Zero", George has let himself be sold into the "Nashville Sound" market.
Unfortunately, like many "country stars" that start traditonal, end up on the other side of the fence, and let's money do the talking instead of sticking to their roots.
Hopefully one day George will go back recording traditional songs like he is well known for.

5 out of 5 stars "WRITE THIS DOWN" AN EXCELLENT GEORGE CD.......2005-01-02

This particular CD is excellent(Although it does not have western swing music on it), and although not quite as good as mid 80s- early 90s George, it is still an great CD, with songs such a "Write This Down", "Meanwhile", the title track, "4 minus 3 Equals Zero", and the best of all "One Of You" getting 10/10 stars, and no weak tracks, means "Write This Down", you have another excellent GS CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for George Strait fans.......2003-06-28

I have been a George Strait fan for many years..I have most of the Cds that he put out, but this Cd he has made is a wonderful collection of George's songs.

5 out of 5 stars Still another excellent record from George.......2002-03-24

Though I didn't become a big fan of George Strait until I saw him in the movie Pure Country, I think George has put out some excellent records. His '99 album Always Never The Same is no exception.

The record's initial hit single, "Meanwhile", is a classic George Strait country song. The waltzing tempo on the song is reminiscent of one of George's early hit songs, "You Look So Good In Love", although "Meanwhile" is a bit slower. And what would an album by George be if it didn't have at least one lost-love song on it? Besides "Meanwhile", this record includes two other songs with the lost-love theme, "That's The Truth" and "4 Minus 3 Equals Zero", with the latter song having the added dimension of a marital breakup.

A Strait album is not all cry-in-your-beer, though. On this album, "Write This Down", "One Of You", and the title song "Always Never The Same" are fun, up-tempo songs that I think will be danced to on a lot of dance floors. Furthermore, George has three positive love songs on this record: "I Look At You", "That's Where I Wanna Take Our Love", and "What Do You Say To That". This is a listenable, well-put-together album, like practically everything George has done. George has still another excellent record in Always Never The Same.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect CD.......2002-01-15

I think this is the Best cd George Strait has yet to come out with. Every song is great.

1 out of 5 stars DIANNA, LOVE ELVIS BUT NOT HIS MUSIC.......2006-06-11

She's had two bad misses, The Girl in the Other Room and now this. Please go back to the Great American Songbook...or sing some covers of soulful songs, Tom Waits, like Holly Cole did or some Motown ballads...You we're great on that tribute to Patsy Cline album...You're in a class of jazz singers like Dakota Staton, Nina Simone, Blossom Dearie, et al be happy with that or Renee Olstead or Jane Monheit will eat your lunch and knock you off the "Current queen of Jazz" pedestal. Some artists can cross over...your intrinsic jazz spirit and intonations seem to preclude that...Stick to the boy that brung ya to the dance...and it ain't elvis.

5 out of 5 stars KRALL SPACE GRATIFIES!.......2004-10-14

Diana Krall has always been - and will always be - at the top of her game. This "SINGLE" release only adds fuel to her fire. Great songs by a great singer. I Recently enjoyed her "Girl in the Other Room" concert appearance here, and encourage anybody who appreciates good jazz and great vocals to attend. Diana Krall can be appreciated by all, but especially by those who know greatness when they hear it (some don't, you know....can we spell "tone-deaf" boys and girls?) Whether on a single or an album or in concert, there's only ONE Diana Krall, and she BEATS all!!!

2 out of 5 stars Only two songs!.......2004-10-10

I may be the only doofus who didn't know this, but there are only two songs on this CD! Love the sounds, but not at all worth the time and postage. Regret buying this album.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Bother.....Let's Hope for better........2004-10-08

I am a fan of Diana Krall...I own every CD she's put out, her DVD and I have seen her in concert five times. This single is on The Girl In The Other Room CD. Rarely have I been more disappointed in a purchase then when I first listened to this CD..... After repeated listening that I hoped would lead to an appreciation of some aspect that I overlooked - I just don't even listen to it anymore. Perhaps the only greater disappointment was going to see her live on her latest tour in support of the CD.

Souless drivel well sung, is still souless drivel. Her new husband, Elvis Costello has done her no favors in writing the songs that are feature on the CD....I hope when the blush of romance has faded a bit she will find her way back to exploring compelling music again. I applaud her valor in trying to escape the confines of "The Great American Songbook" but this effort was ill advised. Do yourself a favor, don't buy the single, don't buy the CD and don't go see her perform on her current tour.

There's too much talent here to expect she won't provide plenty of good music in the future but this time she just didn't get it done. I am hopeful that this is just a stumble as she seeks to walk her own musical path.

My favorites CDs of hers are "Loves Scenes" and "Live In Paris" and the "Live in Paris" DVD is one of the best music DVDs of a live concert I've ever seen. Enjoy those and wait for her next effort.

Product Description

Spanky And Our Gang are a complete trip down the psychedelically-tinged sunshine days of the late Sixties. With harmonies unrivalled by almost any other band save The Mamas And The Papas, and a songbook that included Broadway classics (The Music Mans Trouble), Tin Pan Alley standards (Brother, Can You Spare A Dime) and socially-conscious anthems (Give A Damn), Spanky And Our Gang hold a unique place in pop history. Led by Elaine Spanky MacFarlane, the group embodied the eclectic, artistic, and free-spirited feeling of the era; but with roots in folk, jazz, and blues, and with sometimes as many as six members, their sound took on a complex and multi-layered character. Their collective persona was zany and theatrical and extraordinarily popular. This set, completely remastered by Ellen Fitton at Universal Mastering Studios East and produced by Grammy-winning producer Bill Levenson, includes all of the studio albums released by the band, seven previously-unreleased rarities, and an entire disc of the mono mixes of the bands singles. It also includes extensive liner notes by Richard Barton Campbell and rare photos of the band. Spanky herself was involved throughout the course of the development of the set, and is almost as excited as we are well, maybe even more to see this out on CD, as much for the bands legion of fans as for herself. Sunday will never be the same.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Amelia Earhardt, we have your luggage.".......2007-06-02

I had all three of the Japanese imports, but still ordered this set. Why? Because the LIVE album was there. As mentioned in another review, this set showcases the amazing vocals and outstanding comedy of the group. "Waltzing Mathilda" has some of the finest harmonies you ever heard. Some of the songs are NOT p.c. (Join the Klan for one...), and I'm glad no one said "We can't re-issue this, somebody might be offended!" There is one lp missing, "CHANGE", on Epic in 1975. This is worth finding in the garage sales. If you are a fan of Spanky and Our Gang, this is one you'll want for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars A personal recollection of Spanky.......2007-03-08

This review, unlike most that I write, is highly personal.

I am the world's biggest SPANKY & OUR GANG fan, unabashedly so. All the group's albums and 45s (picture sleeves, mostly) were treasures in my youth. Fifteen years after they disbanded (following the untimely death of Malcolm Hale), I would invariably reach for an Our Gang album to play, even though surrounded by thousands of options in my record store. This group was that compelling for me.
In the early 90s, I met Spanky McFarlane briefly, after a South Florida New Mamas & Papas concert. She was a pretty little thing, and had the BIGGEST singing voice imaginable. When we spoke of the loss of Malcolm, you could actually feel her pain. Spanky is a real person, and a true star.

As for THE COMPLETE MERCURY RECORDINGS--
DESIGN:
This is a compact, nicely organized collection. All four Our Gang albums have been sonically spruced up and given a clarity the original vinyl never had. Song order and mixes remain intact. The Limited Edition book-styled set is made of sturdy paper and has 24-pages of liner notes and data. Several group photos are included, but since there's no captions to match faces to names, those less-familiar with group members will be left to guess who (besides Spanky) is who.

MUSIC:
My favorite is still the posthumous LIVE album. Without overdubs and orchestrations, you can clearly hear what made S&OG so special: their superb voices, personalities and humor. Highlights include the intricate four-part acappella harmony on "Waltzing Matilda," and a version of Gordon Lightfoot's "Steel Rail Blues" that may be the ultimate interpretation of that fine song. Spanky wails away in perfect Chicago blues style on "Oh Daddy" while the guys cut up behind her. The live recording is an album full of smiles.
WITHOUT RHYME OR REASON B/W ANYTHING YOU CHOOSE, their last recorded LP, is simply put: a masterpiece-- one of THE finest issues of 1969 (see my review of it for details). After hearing this thoughtfully put-together and lovely album, one is left wanting more and wishing that Malcolm's loss in late '68 hadn't hastened the group's dissolution.
LIKE TO GET TO KNOW YOU, with it's Roaring 20's nostalgia cover, contains the very first (and in my opinion BEST) version of Fred Neil's "Echoes Of My Mind." A year or so later, Harry Nilsson (and MIDNIGHT COWBOY) would score big with the same song, retitled "Everybody's Talking." The Gang's take on Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne," with their changing moods and rhythms is another album highlight, as is the opener, "The Swinging Gate." The five-part harmonied "Sunday Mornin'" is still, IMO, this group's very best single.
SPANKY & OUR GANG, their first release, contains the most charting singles (three), but also has the first-ever version of "Leaving On A Jet Plane." "Commercial" is still quite funny, and "Distance" is an overlooked gem.
SPANKY'S GREATEST HIT(S), with cover shot of new-mom Spanky, offers remixes of top sellers. The original extended-length "Sunday Mornin'" is here, as well. Spanky comments on the LP in this compilation's liner notes.
PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED RARITIES includes "Crying," which is a song from the Gang's first recording session, in 1966.
THE MONO SINGLE MIXES features the Gang's first 45, "And Your Bird Can Sing/Sealed With A Kiss." This one missed the mark in 1966, but only by a little.

SPANKY & OUR GANG * THE COMPLETE MERCURY RECORDINGS presents two years worth of remarkably varied music. Buy this one with confidence, for it is GREAT GREAT stuff! Listen, and you too just may end up "Stuperflabbergasted."

P.S. to Spanky: Somebody in Florida (besides Nigel) loves yah!

5 out of 5 stars Where to begin?.......2006-11-05

Having waited years for somebody to remaster the Spanky and Our Gang albums, along comes this four CD boxed set to remind me why I was so enthusiastic about what they were doing in the late 60's and also chart their rise, success and eventual demise. It's possible to argue that this is for completists only, but to listen to them remastered and as is pointed out in another review, having shelled out $30+ for a single unmastered Japanese CD puts the price you have to pay into perspective. Undoubtedly the relative familiarity (if you're that old!) with the material on disks one and two makes them the obvious plce to start, but the other two disks have some 'buried treasure" to yield. That said I always though the vocal mix on the "live!" album was strange, and it remains so, because that's how it was recorded! The rarities (Tracks 13 to 19 on Disk 3) have stereo mixes of tracks which were considered for single release. Disk 4 has all the mono single including the ultra rare (in Britain anyway) of the first two single sides, followed in chronological order by the rest. If you missed out on the band first time around this is an excellent investment, and although it appears to be 'a limited' edition there's no indication on my boxed set what that actually means. One gripe and then the exhortation to purchase. Someone, in remastering the second album has missed out nearly all the spoken exchange about the slipper in "like to get to know you"; why? This collection ought to be a 'must have' for anyone remotely interest in the quality music that was being produced in the U.S. at the end of the sixties. As I said in the title of the review, 'where to begin?' to which the answer might be buy this set.

5 out of 5 stars Superb fusion of Jazz, Blues, Pop, Rock, and Folk!.......2006-01-04

About 25 years ago a good friend introduced me to a Spanky and Our Gang LP, Without Rhyme Or Reason. For a person with eclectic tastes, such as myself, it was a delight! Socially conscious lyrics and humor, an occasional blues and even a cover of a 1940's composition (Hong Kong Blues; also covered by George Harrison). The CD versions of the original S&OG LPs had been only offered in Japan and the price (about $30. each) seemed prohibitive. When I heard that Hippo-select remastered EVERYTHING S&OG had recorded I broke my rule of only buying used and immediately ordered this. It has been wonderful to discover many new S&OG tracks, both original and covers (so well done). These recordings drip with the essence of all the positive vibes we associate with the 1960's. Enjoy this wonderful compilation. Only one small issue; the packaging is all cardboard, so it needs to be taken care of. This remaster package was limited to 5000 pressings, although not numbered, I believe it will be certainly a difficult item to own as the years pass.

5 out of 5 stars Quitters Never Win is a Winner.......2004-01-06

"Quitters Never Win" is one of the best album releases of last year. Much the Same is probably the most underrated Chicago band that has ever played a show. This new album shows their growth and progression from their first album "Caught Off Guard" when they were known as Don't Look Down under Tank Records.

The Breakdown:
hile listening to this CD, your are gurranteed to fall in love with at least 3 songs. A good one of them would be he followin

#1 WISH - This is song is perfect to be a begining track on an album. The guitars parts are great, the basslines are solid, and the drums do a good job but it was the bridge on this song that makes it incredible.

#4 Liar - This song also appeard on the "Caught Off Guard" album, but it's re-make on "Quitters Never Win" made it that much better. The basslines and the bass fills on this song is like no other. The guitars and drums plays solid complicated parts but the vocal structure on this song makes it an instant hit.

#5 Masquerade - This song is solid all around but it's the message that makes this song my favorite on the album.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT cd.......2003-10-02

Much the Same is an awesome power-punk band! Quitters Never Win is an excellent CD, with lyrics that are event-specific and can apply to everyone. They harmonize and scream, they are very versatile.
If you ever get a chance to see them live, do it. They are amazing. They are very appreciative of support at shows, and play for a crowd of 2 like there were 5000 people in the room. They are the nicest people I have ever met, and aren't at all arrogant about what they do.
My favorite song on the CD is number 3, New Years. The energy contained in the song is inspiring, and the vocals are very emotional (not emo, not whiney, emotional).
If you like bands like NOFX, Rise Against, or Strung Out, you'll love Much the Same.

5 out of 5 stars This album rocks!!!!.......2003-09-26

This is one of the best albums I've ever heard for so many reasons. The lyrical content could not be any better. At least one song off this CD is guarunteed to mean something to anyone who listens. This is not a girlfriend/breakup cd like so many other "punk" bands put out. These songs are about life. The songs all sound great too. It's good, fast, melodic punk rock. The guitar work is excellent. Mook is awesome on drums. These guys are the nicest band I've ever gotten the chance to talk too, so go see their show too! If you want something more than just pop punk ear candy, go buy this cd!

Leave it to a coupe of quirky Arkansas buskers preoccupied with all things snowy to deliver a uniquely hatched collection of original Christmas songs. Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood have made a name with a family brand of entertainment that combines humor, harmony and imagination. There's plenty of each on Merry Fishes to All, but this is truly a record wrapped with the kids in mind. Surveying the seasonal landscape, the flaky duo sizes up the disappointments of getting clothes for Christmas, having a birthday on December 25, and getting a Cheese Log! In between there's a whacky reworking of a classic called "The Eleven Cats of Christmas" and some simply lovely songs even a hardened old Scrooge could love, including "Snow Is Falling" and "You Got to Get Up," the enchanted desperate plea of every kid who ever burst from bed Christmas morning before sunrise. There's only a couple limp lines drifting off here, but overall the fish are jumpin' and Santa approves. --Martin Keller

    5 out of 5 stars Great music!!!.......2007-01-10

This is wonderful music for families. The music and the musicians are very entertaining--the humor can be appreciated by young and old alike. The music is creative and the musicians are very talented. We as a family highly recommend this CD.

Really loved this so much so that I gave it for presents this Christmas.
"The Eleven Cats Of Christmas" soon became a favorite of my grandson's and there are too many to list that are my favorites--"I Got A Cheese Log"; "Clothes for Christmas"; etc. Such good vocals, not heard since the 60's groups.

5 out of 5 stars Well, Merry Christmas to me! .......2005-12-21

Every year, I have to get a couple of new holiday CDs--especially, the different ones. Instead of "White Christmas" this album starts with chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate...

This isn't just a happy album, though. Trout Fishing shows you the good and bad side of Christmas. How many of you lament the year you got a cheese log, clothes---or the fact that your birthday is too darn close to Christmas?

And the "Christmas Letter" at the end is just too good. If you're feeling down this year, this CD will definitely get you smiling.

    4 out of 5 stars I got a cheese log!.......2004-12-25

This is a terrific album by a folk music duo. At least they are ostensibly a folk duo. Many of the songs here have accompaniment from additional musicians and have more of a rock or jazz feel to them. This album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Children's Album. And while it is indeed an album that can be enjoyed by children, it is also quite enjoyable for adults too. In fact, some of the songs here have lyrics that are a bit too sophisticated to be really appreciated by children. Most of the songs are humorous, but there are a few songs that are played "straight". To sum it up, this is a fun Christmas album that can be enjoyed by both the young and the young at heart.

5 out of 5 stars Another Grammy nomination!.......2004-12-18

I admit it. My family and I are Trout junkies...we can't seem to get enough of these 2 talented guys. We have traveled near and not-so-near to see them live. It's because they really get it, and by "it", I mean the BIG it. As in, "what's it all about?" Things like childhood, growing up, being part of a family, having fun, enjoying each other. And they are fabulous musicians to boot! This album has just been nominated for a Grammy!

With the release of this holiday CD, our annual dilemna of "do we listen to Trout or holiday music?" has been solved. We now have the best of both worlds! The songs are for the most part their original works...you haven't heard them a gazillion times before, but they will become instant classics in your family. Every song is someone's "favorite" in our house, so there are no skipped tracks.

"Snow is Falling" is my personal favorite. I can't put it in words any better than another person who wrote that a real love and respect for children shines through. As I often do when I'm listening to Trout music, I find myself inspired to strive to be the kind of parent my children deserve.

"Snow Day", "Bob & Bob", a great song about 2 "flaky little snowflakes with ordinary names", "You Gotta Get Up" and "The Christmas Letter" are also on my list of favorites. This last one is a touching and pretty song, written much like the familiar Christmas letter sent by many families to keep in touch with loved ones.

"My First Christmas" is a very fun song that cleverly uses titles of popular Christmas carols to tell the story of a baby's first Christmas. "Just Because, Mrs Claus" is a plea for Mrs. Claus to help Mr. Claus lose a few lbs, because "when he was walking rooftops last year, ceilings started cracking." The words are hysterical! After listening to "I Got a Cheese Log" I guarantee you will find yourself humming this catchy little tune at your next holiday party when you come across the obligatory cheese log. "The Eleven Cats of Christmas", or as they call it at our house, "Meow-y Christmas", is The 12 Days of Christmas meets We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Fans of the album My World will be happy to hear a reference to Chicken Joe in this song.

To summarize...great words and music as always. Thanks Keith and Ezra and congrats on the Grammy nomination. I highly recommend this CD. There you go. There you have it.

3 out of 5 stars Oldie, but Goodie.......2006-08-01

Well, I was not expecting to like this one. Its SO old, and very classic (Rodgers and Hart.) But one good thing about it being Rodgers and Hart, is it has lovely lyrics. Clever and witty on every song. Mark Twains book was done justice I think, but I've never read the book. I would suggest this to classic lovers, and newer Broadway fans who want to hear a`"classic" other than Oklahoma. This is a good one. The other great thing about this CD is you get not only A Connecticut Yankee, but also highlights from two other Rodgers and Hart musicals: Higher and Higher and By Jupiter. AWSOME. Favorite Song: "To Keep My Love Alive"

4 out of 5 stars Once lost, now found and reissued on CD........2005-06-03

One of Decca's earliest cast albums (recorded just a few weeks after their famous OKLAHOMA! album) this very nearly became a lost treasure. Recorded on 16" glass masters in 1943, the original release was on 78 RPMS (complete witha booklet givinga detailed synopsis and all the lyrics.) The revival was not a success and when Long Playing records were introduced in the late 1940s, CONNECTICUT YANKEE was not reissued in the new format.

At one time in the 1960s Decca had the masters transferred to tape for a possible LP reissue. That reissue never happened, and in shipping the discs back to the storage facility, they were broken. The tape was taken from the company's archives and did not turn up until almost 30 years later. Though modern technology could probably have coaxed even better sound from the master discs, we must be thankful that the tape was made when it was.

In the meanwhile there were three unautherized isses of these tracks. A new York based private label called Box Office transferred the 78's to one side of an Lp in the 1970s. Later, AEI released an elaborate gatefold Lp with not only the full score (again dubbed from 78s) but also fabricated some additional tracks reprising some of the songs (in theatrical order) by editing portions from the existing tracks. Finally there was a release on CD from Box Office with horrible sound that stil sometimes turns up for sale. Avoid it. Decca actually sent a request that Box Office withdraw the bootleg Cd.

This edition has much better sound and the bonus tracks by Hildegard and Shirley Ross from BY JUPITER and HIGHER AND HIGHER make the package very worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars THOU SWELL. THE YANKEE WINS AGAIN!.......2003-02-09

"A Connecticut Yankee," by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers, contains more hit songs than the average Broadway season nowadays. "My Heart Stood," "Still," "Thou Swell" and the redoubtable "To Keep My Love Alive" all sound fresh and vibrant in this fabulously remastered 1943 recording. Particularly wonderful is the total and complete recording of "To Keep My Love Alive," sung by the one great (female) love of the Lyricist's life, Vivienne Segal ... nearly seven minutes of the wittiest ways to do in a husband. This is one of the first "original cast" recordings ever recorded, and it sounds as crisp and clear as a recording made today. Bravo! (Submitted by staff member Stephen J. Finn)

    4 out of 5 stars A Lost Gem.......2002-01-17

A wonderful rerelease of glass discs made for the 1943 revival of this charming musical. While the orchestra is less than polished (there is one particular trumpet you can hear over and over that is awful and flat!)--it has a lot of zest to it, and makes one yearn to see the play - indeed, to see more of the Rodgers and Hart shows performed.

3 out of 5 stars Not complete and NOT first CD version.......2001-08-19

This CD collection of tracks from the 1943 revival of the Rodgers & Hart musical is advertised as the first CD presentation of these tracks. This is incorrect. I have a CD issued in 1999 by Box Office Recordings called "A Collector's Rodgers & Hart" which contains all the "Connecticut Yankee" tracks plus 14 additional tracks of Rodgers & Hart covers (different from the covers on the Decca CD).

Worse, I have an AEI LP recording of the revival which has three additional tracks from the show. Why weren't these selections included in this recording?

On the other hand, even the 9 tracks from Connecticut Yankee are worth owning. As a previous reviewer said, just Vivienne Segal's "To Keep My Love Alive" is worth the price of admission!

A definite plus for TRUTH fans. Although TRUTH doesn't perform anymore their music still lives on. That is kinda weird to say since all of it is out of print pretty much. This album features the 1998 version of TRUTH which included Roger Breland's son Jason. This album was released around the time when Christian music was changing, so it is quite different from the traditional TRUTH sound featuring very contemporary songs such "Through the Noise" and "Out of the Deep" THe TRUTH harmonies are there. The more traditional TRUTH sound that they are known for is in songs like "My Only Hope Is In You" "Yesterday's News" and "The Glory of the Blood" which was later re recorded by Avalon. This is a very fun and unique album that is a definite must!!

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, Morbid, and Seemingly Not of this World!.......2006-01-11

This is powerful music, folks. I developed an interest in this genre after reading an online piece about Joe Bussard, the world's greatest 78 rpm record collector.
If you can get past the scratches, pops, and surface noise of these old 78 rpm shellac slabs, you'll be transported to another dimension. This is the world before antibiotics and air conditioning, before commerical radio and chain stores, when polio and diptheria still claimed daily victims, and a simple staph infection was a death sentence. As R. Crumb says in the film bearing his name, as he puts his oringal 78 rpm copy of "Last Kind Word Blues" on the turntable, "when I listen to old music is the only time I have a kind of faith in humanity. On these old records you hear the voice of the common people expressing their connection to eternity or whatever it is out there. People today can't express themselves like that, it isn't possible."
That's a fascinating obersvation by Crumb, and spot-on too. There was no such thing as a 'producer" in the early days of 78s, musicians would merley show up and sing their songs into a primitive microphone, and that would cut the sounds directly on to the shellac itself. No gloss, no overdubs, no electornic trickery, no splices, no equalizers or synsthesizers or drum machines. Just honest sounds, raw sounds, sounds that are black and blue as a Pittsburg rare steak, dark and charred outside with a cold, bloody, center. You can feel these songs creep up your spine like an icy wind, raw and cold. You have to buy this album right now, I am prescribing it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars A real treasure in the songster tradition!.......2005-11-27

This 3 cd collection serves to fill a large gap in the availability of some great recordings. While some tracks from certain artists have been available in one form or another for some time (Richard Brown's "James Alley Blues", Luke Jordan's "Cocaine Blues", all of Mississippi John Hurt's early output, etc.) this collection offers the fantastic complete recordings of each of these artists. It also has even more from others who I've never previously heard about, but who are just as intriguing. The mere fact that Richard "Rabbit" Brown and Luke Jordan have their complete recorded works included in this set makes it worth the price alone (seeing these artists listed is why I bought it). There is however, much more to discover on this set, most of it pre-dating the blues, and painting a fascinating picture of African American musical culture before the record industry boom. Each performer has a highly individualistic approach to their sound and subject matter, and the various combinations and instrumentations of performers (singer/guitarists, vocal groups, quill players, harmonica players, etc.) keeps this set feeling fresh and interesting on every listen. You can also expect high quality mastering from Document records, which only helps in keeping these performers sounding as prescient as ever. Highly recommended.
