Part of Tzadik's "Composer Series" of recordings, this is Wadada Leo Smith's most expansive and fully realized large ensemble album to date. Less a typical jazz album than a suite of four interrelated modern classical compositions, "Lake Biwa" touches on everything from delicate neoclassical chamber music and atonal acoustic free jazz to full blown electric Miles Davis-esque era fusion, often in the same piece. All of Smith's multifarious talents are on display on this album.

Although the actual recording line-up consists of 15 musicians, rarely do they all play at once. The four long form compositions presented on this album are reduced into even smaller, sonically disparate movements, with each distinctive section tackled by smaller units demonstrating their respective instrumental strengths. Frequently these abridged groups will subjugate their playing to act as support for one or more soloists. Although Smith's writing style is typically less episodic than it is here, the pieces on "Lake Biwa" are more influenced by both traditional classical compositional theory as well as the post-modern jump cut aesthetic.

While the album opens on a more subdued note, it doesn't take long until one of Marc Ribot's raucous electric guitar meltdowns appears. Imagine Miles Davis' electric bands circa 1974 and you'll have a good idea of where this music derives some of its inspiration. On the flip side, there are plenty of moments where John Zorn's own acerbic alto squeals along fitfully accompanied by a barrage of percussion and on occasion, tense swelling strings. Smith even chimes in with his own clarion trumpet playing for a few solo spots, one of which utilizes Miles' own signature electric wah-wah to delicious effect. Bolstered by a batterie of keyboardists, a handful of percussionists, a few string players and a varied horn section, the resulting ensemble is capable of virtually any textural configuration.

But the key difference between "Lake Biwa" and the majority of Smith's music is in the rhythm section approach. "Lake Biwa" qualifies as classical music more than jazz by virtue of the fact that it rarely, if ever, swings. That is, if one still uses such antiquated notions to classify music. Otherwise, the majority of this sounds akin to Anthony Braxton's large ensemble writing or fellow composer Anthony Davis' music for orchestra. Trumpeter and composer Butch Morris' improvised conduction ensembles share similarities with this music as well. In the truest sense of the term, this is most definitely a "Third Stream" effort.

For those interested in hearing a crack ensemble of Downtown's finest tackle some truly rewarding composed and improvised music, one need look no further than "Lake Biwa." It might not swing in a traditional jazz sense, but it veers from the sublime to ecstatic so easily that you won't miss the beat.

don't waste your money on this CD-is one of the most annoying CD's I have ever heard. I am annoyed at myself for buying it.Some of the tunes were hard to reconize, they are that bad.The only reason it gets one star is because there is no lower rating.

BALLROOM DANCING - Chris Kalogerson & Orchestra

Experienced ballroom dancers, read no further--this CD is not for you. The tempo on most of these selections is painfully slow, suitable for beginner's practice. One can almost hear the dancer counting "1-2-3" in the waltz (85 BPM), or "slow-slow-quick-quick" on the fox-trots. The Latin selections lack the fire and energy associated with this type music. On the two rumba selections (Spanish Eyes & Day in the Life of a Fool) the tempo is OK. On the cha-chas the rhythm is understated, and difficult for an inexperienced dancer to follow. A tip-off should be that this CD has "Dance Instructions Enclosed." Descriptions of the basic step of seven dances (with numbered foot-diagrams) is enclosed. A novelty is the inclusion of the "Butterfly" dance word-description. Track # 8, "Little Brown Jug," is labeled "Butterfly," and has the expected repeated changes of tempo from 3/4 to 2/4.

A Great "Lost" Album!.......2003-02-28

I had heard of Magic before, but never heard any of their songs; so I took a chance and bought the CD, and the only question I have is: WHY didn't these guys make it big? Magic joins the list of the many obscure bands that should've gotten famous such as White Witch, Epitaph, Geordie, and so on; this is one talented band for as young as they were in 1969 when this album was released.

Overall, the songwriting is great and the music is played well throughout; my favorite tracks are "California", "You Must Believe She Is Gone", and the fantastic "That's How Strong My Love Is", where guitarist Duane King's vocals are almost the prototype for what Michael Bolton sounded like 2 decades later (only far BETTER than Bolton). On the nearly 9-minute track "I'll Just Play", the band literally takes advice from the title and does just that. While it starts out on a powerful note, it gets a bit bogged down and repetitious as Duane King and Joey Murcia trade off guitar solos that end up sounding the same after a while.

This is about as complete a compilation as you're ever going to find on Magic; you have the whole of the "Enclosed" album, songs from their second 1971 album "Magic" (on which Stevie Wonder plays organ on one song), as well as a couple of obscure 45's. Sadly, one of Magic's members, bassist Nick King died in a car accident in 1998, and the CD is dedicated to his memory.

All in all, a great CD from a great band that should've gone a lot farther than they did; buy this and you'll enjoy it!

This CD rocks - it's timeless. It certainly brings back many memories. When I listened to various cuts from the CD, I felt as though I stepped back into a time warp. After not listening to it for a number of years, I can hear a bit a Hendrix, together with Magic's own, unique sound. If you were in Ft. Lauderdale in the early 70's, and you remember this group, BUY THE CD. Even if you were not there, and do not remember Magic, BUY IT ANYWAY.

After the 1994 quake in Los Angeles, I sadly decided to part with the majority of my vinyl albums (and 45's) that I had acquired since the early 60's; the same albums/records that I collected while living in PA and FL, and then transported to CA in the back seat of my VW. But,there were a few albums (some mobile fidelity), and Beatles on the "Apple" label, that I just could not part with. Among these treasures, there was another album that I could and never will part with, and I still have it --"Enclosed" ---- Magic. I remember seeing Magic at the "Scene" in Fort Lauderdale, FL in the early 70's. Everyone just loved this band. I remember Duane King and Joey Murcia, whom I just adored. Joey Murcia then joined the "Benny Latimore and the Kinfolk" band that played Sunday afternoon jam sessions at the Ocean Mist, among other places. I loved this group then; and I love this group now. I'm so glad that I have been able to make this CD a part of my ever-growing music collection.
