When a Rastafarian MC stole the show on Gang Starr's posse cut "I'm the Man" (from their Daily Operation LP), rap fans took notice. And they were not disappointed by Jeru the Damaja's aptly titled debut, The Sun Rises in the East. His ability to drop rhymes filled with Biblical references and simultaneously speak out against the C.R.E.A.M credo that permeates hip-hop is unparalleled. The Brooklyn mic fiend's vast vocabulary and clear delivery are on display on "Mental Stamina," where he gloats that he's a "Phoenician with more stamina than a Christian," as he introduces the world to rhyme partner Afu Ra. And the street anthem "Come Clean" features DJ Premier--arguably hip-hop's best producer--at his finest (check the drippy faucet sample). This album isn't without controversy, however. On "Da Bichez," Jeru draws a distinction between what he calls "bitches" and "young ladies" over a hot horn loop. But in spite of some inconsistencies in his stance as a prophet, this 40-minute album contains no filler, and remains his best work to date. --Dalton Higgins

Classic.......2007-06-10
Yeah when you want true hip hop it just doesnt get better then this right here man... Jeru the damaja's "the sun rises in the east" is one of those albums that you dont skip any track cause all the songs are straight fire and the lirycs are even more deadly and the beats ? Amazing.Hip hop used to be my insperation back in these day. Go copy if you dont already have it ? U need to get beat down. Every true hip hop head should already own diz album.
Only Biggie and Nas's albums in 94 was better.......2007-05-25
What do get when you put an MC with thought provoking and tight lyrics and a producer with hot beats? One of the best debut albums ever! Jeru and Primo was a nasty combo when they did The Sun Rises In The East. Jeru had the 3rd best album in 1994 behind Biggie and Nas and that was only because they dropped classics albums as well. Jeru had metaphors, punchlines, and phrases for you and Primo gave you some of the best beats ever. The beat for Come Clean is among the greatest beats eva. The best thing about the album is that it had one guest appearance and the worst thing about it was that it really didn't the airplay it deserved and it was greatly slept on by the masses. My favorite tracks are Come Clean, D Original, My Mind Spray, and Ain't The Devil Happy, but check out the entire album cause it's worth it.
When The East Is In The House..........2007-05-24
Wow what else can be said about Jeru and this production by Premo. I honestly think that this production got Premo more buzz than any of the Gang Starr albums. Every cut weighs heavy and has a lot of lyrical content. Jeru started really mastering the on beat off beat rhyme scheme more than any other rapper and made it his signature. This album like Illmatic makes you feel like your in his neighborhood even though you may have never stepped foot in NYC or Brooklyn for that matter. Another gem that every head should own, no filler hear or massive guest appearances here.
Gritty East Coast Hip Hopper.......2007-03-22
Jeru is raw and skillful. The man is a poet and expresses feeling. Great CD! I wish he would cut some more!
The Prophet Drops The Ill Science {5 Stars}.......2007-03-03
Back in '94 a lot of the rap albums that were dropping were pretty much home runs. With that being the standard, a lot of folks were dropping classics just keep pace with their contemporaries. Jeru's debut, The Sun Rises In The East, is on par with pretty much any rap release from '94 (yes, including Illmatic and Ready To Die). Jeru enlists the talents of DJ Premier. Premo is also the producer behind Gangstarr, the classic Return Of The Boom Bap LP by KRS One, and quite a few others -- so you know the man's pedigree is nothing short of top notch. The sound is nothing short of that gritty, NY styled boom bap. If you aren't nodding when you put this on, then you may want to check yourself for a pulse. Jeru's rhymes fit the production to a tee. His rhymes mostly center around enlightening the urban youth and dropping 5% science. I'm always down for a positive message that tries to better whoever may be listening.
As far as flaws go, there were one or two tracks that didn't grab this particular listener. "Brooklyn Took It" and "Statik" may be good tracks, but unless you catch me on a good day, I'll probably skip them. That's just me though -- you may love them (most people do). The rest of the album is on point and provides excellent nod material.
The Sun Rises In The East is classic east coast boom bap styled hip hop. With Premier on the boards you really can't go wrong. Couple that with Jeru's commanding, razor sharo lyrical delivery and you have a chunk of must have hip hop music on your hands. I highly recommend making this one a collection piece.

Product Description
Tuatara were formed in Seattle in 1996 by R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin. The new disc features guitarist Scott McCaughey (R.E.M., Young Fresh Fellows, The Minus 5), bassist Kevin Hudson, trumpet/flugelhorn player Dave Carter and saxophonist/flutist Craig Flory.
Guest vocalists on this album include The Jayhawks' Gary Louris and Mark Olson, American Music Club's Mark Eitzel, The Geraldine Fibbers' Jessy Greene, Luna's Dean Wareham, John Wesley Harding, Victoria Williams, Gina Sala, and Sufi poet Coleman Barks. Flamenco legend Ottmar Liebert and Iraqi oudist Rahim Alhaj contributed instrumentally.
Tuatara, named after a New Zealand reptile, was originally put together to create music for film soundtracks. But they've evolved from an instrumental studio act into a performing group that dabbles in a variety of genres. The band have written enough material over the past four years that another album, "West Of The Moon", will soon follow this one.
"Musically, the Sun songs are more masculine, with a kind of High Plains Drifter/Spanish troubadour quality," says Martin. "The Moon songs are more groovy and feminine, and definitely just as powerful as the Sun songs."
Customer Reviews:
A Different Tuatara.......2007-06-27
Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey and Barrett Martin come together to create a different Tuatara release with this beautiful, well produced collaboration of great singers/songwriters and musicians. Songs by vocalists such as Dean Wareham, Gary Louris and Victoria Williams, just to name a few, are interspersed with spoken word poetry by Coleman Barks, the Rumi translator and poet. This is an interesting and thought provoking cd, and I look forward to hearing West of the Moon.
Awesome New Direction For Tuatara!!!!.......2007-06-22
I absolutely love this album! It is rooted in classic songwriting and production and features some of the greatest singer-songwriter-poets in America today; i.e. Dean Wareham (Luna), Mark Eitzel (American Music Club), Scott McCaughey (REM), Gary Louris and Mark Olson (The Jayhawks), Jessy Greene (Geraldine Fibbers), Victoria Williams, John Wesley Harding and the great Sufi poet Coleman Barks. Even though Tuatara has made instrumental soundtrack music in the past, this new album shows how they can take that musical finesse and add vocals to it with astounding success. It's like a great western film soundtrack with singer-storytellers providing the narrative. Ignore the small-minded pessimists who only understand simplicity, and explore this new direction in the band - it is well worth the journey.
booooo.......2007-06-22
well, apparently skerik took off or got the boot, and with him went all the fun, innovative jazz explorations. in its stead is a bunch of country rock flavored fluff; fine, if that's what you're in the market for, but it's worlds apart from the directions explored in the past, and highly disappointing to fans of their previous music.
the liner notes relate that the album is about a journey of sorts through hell. i just wish they hadn't made it quite so literal for this listener. a complete waste of time and money.

the end of an era in A-ha's music.......2007-06-30
Luis Mejia (son)- Aha's works of the 80's were excellent, some were lazy too but this album is an inspiration of sweet sounds, beautiful melodies and sets at the greatest state of pop.
Being released in 1992, it still contains the rythms that have always characterized A-ha. The ballads are amazing and the lyrics are maybe the best that Paul Savoy have written. The use of keyboards of A-ha keeps being a wonder, and even when in they use mainly a synthesizer amog all the songs, they're still the dominant musical feature.
Within the songs, ballads like Crying In The Rain, Rolling Thunder, Slender Frame and the title track are the best content in the album, being soft, sensitive and delicate. Another great feature is the pop sound keyboard applied in the fast tracks such as Sycamore Leaves and Cold River, which applies also excellent guitars by Paul. I Call Your Name and Early Morning are nice pop ballads but in times they seem out of tune. The Way We Talk is a song for staying shock for the new style of "ruining an album just at the end". Now here is where experience enters among listeners, even before spliting, they were just starting to try some alternative sounds, such as in (Seemingly) Non Stop July, and as a person hears the new century albums, one notices the brutal change.
When it comes to the bad aspects I can say a lot, too. First of all it isn't new for A-ha to try to enchant the audience with beautiful choruses for hiding the not-so-good structure of the songs. Also they've stayed in the same musical mood since Stay On These Roads, the structure of these songs and sound patterns can be characterized in their past 4 albums.
In conclusion, even with it's failures, it's excellent for we, the fan audience and also for the new listeners for identify their sounds and create ideas.

A few good songs on this one. Not my favorite, but not my least favorite of their work either.
A-ha's most mature/eclectic album to date .......2006-03-28
Ever since I heard the pulse-pounding rhythm and magnificent vocals of 1985's awesome hit, 'Take On Me,' I have forever remained (and will remain) an A-ha fan. I recognize that holding onto the music of the 1980s is not always easy to prove to others as "worthy contributions." However, the Norwegian trio is in a class above the fray that is highly removed from the 'stamp&go' mentality of pop music. "East Of The Sun, West Of The Moon" is the best example I can think of to prove this statement. Turning away the trademark 'synth sounds' that had been known with their group for the last 3 albums, A-ha has now taken an adult-contemporary/soft-rock approach with this album. The result is nothing short of amazing and consistent.
From the powerful melancholic rendition (would we expect nothing less from A-ha by now? haha) of Carole King's classic 'Crying In The Rain' (originally a hit in the 60's by the Everly Brothers) to the short somber closer of 'Seemingly Nonstop July,' A-ha makes a terrific sound change that is both pleasing and fitting. Morten Harket has a simply gifted vocal range that allows him free reign to sing anything put in front of him. Magne Furuholmen and Pal Waaktaar have a unique sense of melody, arrangment and lyricism which is put to the test and mastered with this album. Not only do the tracks have a soft, groovy and sometimes dramatically-operatic tone, but they also have perceptive depth and sensibility. Check out the title track and see how one can feel lost and long for that place of serenity lying out of reach. Check out 'I Call Your Name' and notice the heartbreaking image of being still in love with your spouse while the whole relationship has fallen apart. 'Waiting For Her' may seem adolescent, but Morten's delivery makes it all the more relevant for anyone in that situation. 'The Way We Talk' is a short but pleasant gift when Magne takes center stage as lead vocals, and does an impressive job with it.
In conclusion, I would highly recommend this album to fans of A-ha or just fans of this type of music in general. As a music fan, nothing impresses me more than seeing diversity and versatility with an artist(s). A-ha made a stunning leap with "East Of The Sun, West Of The Moon" and that caused many listeners to dismiss it as shoddy, mismanaged and overall poor in nature. But I urge the interested reader (and listener) to judge the recordings for themselves, not what the critics dictate. Just because one changes their sound does not mean they have changed their hearts for the craft. After all, don't we (as individuals) have different sides to ourselves that not all totally understand? Think about it .... go out and purchase this wonderful album and feel connected for a short period of time with the themes, sound and tone of this album .... I would give it over 10 stars if I could!
East of Good Music, West of Enjoyable.......2006-03-13
This was a poor effort by a-ha. You can tell by its sales ranking: The Rockwell Box Set did better. The only thing that makes this CD look good is by compairing it to their new CD, Analogue, which should be sold with an apology to all a-ha fans. A-ha got lazy, and greedy on this one. A-ha got back on track with Lifelines and most certainly, Minor Earth/Major Sky. But East of the Sun, West of the Moon, no good.
Preacher for the Church of a-ha.......2006-02-04
If I could have my dream job, it would be to convert the world to the beautiful sounds of this band of beautiful men - and this would be the album I would do it with. Simply put - it's perfection.

The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Good film music should be seen and not heard--that is, it's usually there for background, to reinforce what you're seeing, not to draw attention to itself. So why listen to it? Often that's a mystery, but the items in this collection seem to have been selected because they are interesting music (Prokofiev, Copland, Bernstein) or because they are so familiar that they bring back memories of favorite movies (Laura, High Noon, Star Wars). Like much movie music, a lot of these items are sentimental and overblown, even the more famous ones. (Those famous screaming strings in Psycho can sound silly without the onscreen action.) But if you want one movie-music CD in your collection, this may be the one to have. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Worth it for "Conquest" alone.......2005-09-12
The stirring martial music from the movie "Captain from Castille" ("Conquest") is on this album and so far as I know it's the only CD you'll find it on. But other tracks are great also, including the "Parade of the Charioteers" from "Ben Hur," the theme from "The Magnificent Seven," and "The Imperial March" from Star Wars.
A GREAT COMPILATION!.......2005-06-05
I've come to appreciate soundtracks more and more. This compilation progresses chronologically through 60 years of film music, starting with 1939's "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood", and ending with "Titanic". It encompasses a huge range of styles. Along with the usual suspects - music from "Ben-Hur", "The Magnificent 7", "Star Wars", et al, there are a few real sleepers, like John Barry's medieval-flavored theme to "The Lion in Winter", or Leonard Roseman's lyrical "East of Eden". Blessedly, most of the tracks are original recordings, conducted by the composers, among them Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. Only those of us burned by tinny, tacky, sacriligiously rearranged retreads on obscure labels can appreciate this.
There are a few notable omissions. The prolific Randy Newman isn't represented, though Uncle Alfred is. And NO Ennio Morricone? - incredible! Presumably, this has more to do with Sony's current copyrights and contracts than the relative merits of the composers. And it's fine to have John Williams included twice, but why two pieces from "Star Wars"? Why not the theme from "Jaws", for instance? Or "Sugarland Express", for a really unexpected treat? But these are minor quibbles. And for whatever it's lacking, there's no fluff substituted. This is real music from fine craftsmen, which sometimes attains art. A great intro to the form, and wonderful just to listen to. I bought it used - one of my best deals ever!
So So Compilation.......2002-01-14
My major interest in this CD was in the selection entitled "Robin Hood And His Merry Men" (duration: 4 min, 28 sec), conducted by John Williams, and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. It turns out that this is a re-issue of the track from Sony Classical SK 62788, 1997. Surprisingly, this performance is poky, ponderous, and prodding. The conducting is, well, somnambulistic. Miking/mixing/processing yields a sonic brick deficient in instrumental nuances while sounding like way too many musicians were shoe horned into the recording studio. As for the rest of the tracks, it's hard to believe, but Silva America offers better compilations! Best to skip this one.
Deserves more than five stars.......2000-06-23
I have several discs of film music, and this one if by far the best. As one of the previous reviewers noted, there are many peices absent that could have been included here, but I don't see how anyone could be completely satisfied with any compilation that fit on just one disc.
The performances here are crisp and clear, and include a good selection of both old and new, ranging from traditional film favorites like the Star Wars theme, to less common selections like the screeching strings from Psycho (at least, I think they're less common, but I could be wrong). And I could listen to the Magnificent Seven theme over and over.
Anyway, this is a great disc for almost anyone. If you're looking for one thing in particular, find that film's soundtrack, but otherwise, this is a fantastic disc, and one of my favorites!
Music In Film (NPR Milestones of the Millennium.......2000-05-02
Great CD;the music is crystal clear with an excellent variety demonstrating the wide variety of musical talents in Hollywood. Liner notes are also most interesting, explaining some of the history behind the cuts and pointing out differences in the composers styles...as with John Barry. His style ranges from "the Lion in Winter" bold dramatic soundtrack to the exquisitley tender "Dances with Wolves" theme music. A CD to enjoy over and over

CD and DVD -- zamechatel'niye!.......2005-10-21
The local PBS channel featured Helmut Lotti's "From Russia With Love" for the recent pledge drive. They got my support! And I got this wonderful CD and equally wonderful DVD. Helmut Lotti has a superb voice and he sings these Russian songs with such passion! Remarkably, he does not speak Russian, but learned the lyrics phonetically. Here are some of my favorite folk songs: Polyushko polye, Cherniye ochi, Kalinka. And some popular Russian songs which made it to the American hit parade: Dorogoy dlinnoyu ("Those Were the Days, My Friend") and the English language rendition of "Dream Away" ("A Stranger in Paradise"). Helmut gives a sweet, personal touch to movie themes "From Russia With Love" and "Lara's Theme" and a poignant "Far East of the Sun." These latter are sung in English. The final stanza of "Far East," a song from the Siberian gulag, could bring tears to your eyes! The finale is the Russian National Anthem. This is one of the most beautiful and singable of all anthems. The pleasing music has recently been given new lyrics by its original composer. Helmut sings the updated version accompanied by the Red Army Ensemble. My only criticism of the CD: lyrics should have been provided for nonRussian speakers. But I'm certain a web-search could easily locate lyrics and translations. The DVD features the same wonderful songs, with videos of Russian villagers and Cossacks in traditional costume. Helmut's trip through Russia on the TransSiberia Railroad provides the backdrop to the musical DVD. Through his eyes you see the splendor of this awesome, huge country. I recommend watching the DVD to get a feel for the artist's own appreciation of Russia. You'll feel the love each time you listen to the CD!

Where to Find Sil Austin's Original "Danny Boy":.......2005-05-15
For all those who have been, or may be in the future, buying this CD hoping to get Sil Austin's original, full-length, 3:59 version of "Danny Boy" (the version also on the hit 45,) it is on "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals II," Eric 11518-2, currently offered on this site. Perhaps this will do until the "Plays Pretty for People" is available on CD--if ever.
I was hoping for "Plays Pretty for the People"!.......2004-06-06
I entered this site specifically to order 'Sil Austin Plays Pretty for the People'. What a disappointment. Earlier today while riding in my car, a local radio station played the entire album. It took me back in time and I rushed home to order thhis album specifically. Hopefully, enough fans of the great Sil Austin will prompt promoters to put this wonderful album on a CD, or, at least an audiocassette.
Great Sax - Sil Austin, 16 January 2003.......2003-01-17
I read the reviews, and I have not heard the songs. Yet, I am disappointed because I remember Sil's original version of Danny Boy. If this album does not contain the original Danny Boy, I would not buy it. I have been searching decades for this song but I have never found the original. I would buy the whole CD just for the original Danny Boy. No one, but no one plays it like Sil Austin.

PURR-FECT MUSIC.......2003-02-10
The long defunct English band is,to my mind, the finest one of the 90s,which is the period of their greatest activity.
Never hitting the heights like their contemporaries Jesus Jones or other Happy Valley bands, they left the business frustrated by a lack of success.
They had a highly individual sound, always with the same voice, and a great sense of melodic invention.
The name came from a Strawberry Alarm Clock lyric, information divulged by them to a French interviewer. Its been kept alive by me as my User Name and I have a huge Fan Site on EGroups

Niels Gade belongs to the generation of composers before Grieg, and his religious output is much more convincing than that of his sometime protégé, displaying hardly any of that saccharine piety common in early 19th-century choral works. Indeed, as a body (and because Gade often writes for eight parts), it stands comparison with Schumann's glorious Doppelchörige Gesänge. Grieg's relationship with the church, however, was much more strained, and this explains the relatively small number of religious choral works in his output, and also the tone of professional beauty rather than devotion that they display. Having said that, though, they do span the composer's entire career and show his artistic development in miniature, from the academic fugue he wrote as a student to the highly individualized use of folk tunes in his final composition, Four Hymns. The beauty and accuracy of the Danish National Radio Choir's singing are almost frightening, until the silken persuasiveness of the sound seduces you into forgetting it. --Warwick Thompson

Customer Reviews:
"Hamilton's playing is an inspiration - from the heart".......2001-02-12
When you thought you heard the best album Scott Hamilton had recorded, this release gives you a kick - "East Of The Sun", truly an astonishing confident performance. Hamilton appeared in the mid '70s with his appealing swing-style on tenor sax, mixing Zoot Sims, Ben Webster and Lester Young during the fusion era before settling on now his-own distinctive style. Moved to New York in 1976, toured and has recorded over thirty albums for Concord Jazz, as sideman and solo...with Gene Harris, Ray Brown, Rosemary Clooney, Ruby Braff, Charlie Byrd and Cal Tjader.
Supported by Carl E. Jefferson (executive producer), Scott seized the opportunity to fulfill a cherished ambition to record with his regular British trio - Brian Lemon (piano), Dave Green (bass) and Allan Ganley (drums) - like Scott, Dave and Allan are self-taught and learned while they earned. Recorded at Lansdowne Recording Studios Ltd., London, England...August 31, 1993.
Of course there stand outs - "IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU" (Burke/Van Heusen), great standard recorded by many crooners Crosby and Sinatra, this bossa-nova Hamilton arrangement is rhytmically-intoxicating..."IT NEVER ENTERED MY MIND" (Rodgers/Hart), magnificent version of a like-minded team who work together regularly, so natural...and the highlight is - "BERNIE'S TUNE" (Miller/Lieber/Stoller), completely fresh interpretation, shades of Henry Mancini come to mind - every jazz player's dream is to swing, and swing it does!
Total Time: 63:13 on 11 Tracks...Concord Jazz CCD-4583...(1993)
Standards delivered with warmth.......2001-02-01
The fuss about "neoconservative" or "neotraditional" jazz in the 1980s (Marsalis et al) conveniently ignored younger musicians like Scott Hamilton who, without any hype, had been playing in an unfussily traditionalist swing style for their entire careers. This disc is one of the dozens he's recorded for Concord, showcasing an attractively honest & intelligent tenor style.
There are a couple distinctive features of the recording. First is the expert rhythm section of three British musicians--Brian Lemon on piano, Dave Green on bass & Allan Ganley on drums. They are all excellent players whose comfortable swing puts many North American rhythm sections to shame. The other feature here is the repertoire, which is mostly (except for "Bernie's Tune" & Hamilton's original blues "Setagaya Serenade") extremely well-worn standards like "Autumn Leaves" & "Indiana". According to the liner notes the tunes were chosen in a poll by readers of Japan's _Swing Journal_ as "titles they would most like to hear on a Scott Hamilton recording".
If the tunes are a bit overfamiliar, Hamilton certainly doesn't treat them sleepily: each rendition is delivered smoothly & beautifully but with genuine craft & freshness. The disc has a lovely, warm feel, reinforced by the glowing studio sound. It's a disc that isn't for those looking for flash--indeed, it's perhaps a touch too becalmed (it might have benefitted from another uptempo number maybe, though certainly Hamilton's calling card is ballads). Its most beautiful moments come on "It Never Entered My Mind"--an absolutely flawless rendition--& on a swinging "Autumn Leaves" & a surprisingly hard-hitting "Bernie's Tune".
Big-hearted, gentle music: those aren't qualities that are in plentiful supply in contemporary jazz, & are all the more to be treasured for their abundance here.
This cd didn't hold my interest.......2000-11-28
The idea of going to London to record a project is great. People do this all the time, with great success. That being said, I felt like this cd should have been a lot better than it was.
Let's look at why I think this cd floundered. It used British musicians which I particulary like, but the musicians seemed to not play in a synergenic style. They seemed to lack direction. They didn't really have a leader that took charge. I would have thought that Brian Lemon, the pianist would had taken conrol, but he didn't.
I felt like the repertoire was a decent one, but there's more to creating a great sound than this. The musicians need to act like they are having fun playing and have a purpose for their gathering together.
There were a few bright spots for this cd, but not enough.
Recommendation: I can not recommend this cd.
My first exposure to Scott Hamilton..........2000-08-20
This album was given to me by a friend who is not into jazz. I had never heard of Scot Hamilton up to listening to East of the Sun. I was blown away, this is the traditional easy jazz that I have been looking for. I will be adding more Scott Hamilton to my CD collection.
