The Mamas and the Papas blazed across the '60s folk-rock scene, scoring nine Top 40 hits in less than two years. So bright was their brief run that it earned them a berth in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This set shows at least some of the reason why--there's the era-defining hit "California Dreamin'," plus other triumphs such as "Monday, Monday," "Words of Love," "Dedicated to the One I Love," and the autobiographical "Creeque Alley." Perplexingly, the 20th Century Masters set substitutes "Dancing Bear" for "Glad to Be Unhappy," which was a bigger hit. Then too, the set is skimpy compared to their previously released Greatest Hits, but it does win points for including two Cass Elliot solo hits, "Make Your Own Kind of Music" and "Dream a Little Dream of Me." --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars A Trip Down Memory Lane.......2007-07-27

I have played this CD constantly in the car since receiving my purchase from Amazon. Growing up in the 50's, a teenager in the 60's, this wonderful group sings the songs that evoke all the nostalgia from that unique decade. Their harmony, vocals, and instrumentation are one of a kind. It's unfortunate their time as a group was so brief, but the quality they produced in that short span almost makes up for it. You will enjoy this CD enormously if nostalgia and great songs are what you're after.

5 out of 5 stars ONLY THE BEST!!!.......2007-05-07

This is a very nice compilation of one of the best 60's group ever; from their first No. 1 hit, CALIFORNIA DREAMIN' (issued in 1966), Mamas And Papas improved to be an incredible combination of male and female voices (Mama Cass Elliot is simply great); unforgettable beautiful ballads like MONDAY MONDAY, DEDICATED TO THE ONE I LOVE and TWELVE THIRTY, one Mama Cass'number (MAKE YOUR OWN KIND OF MUSIC), and pretty tunes like CREEQUE ALLEY, DANCING BEAR and DREAM A LITTLE DREAM FOR ME...all the songs are precious!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-04-10

I thoroughly enjoy this collection of hits from The Mamas and the Papas. Every song is fun and the tunes will stay with you long after you're done listening.

Like other selections from the 20th Century Masters series, this can't be called a complete collection. However, what is included is fantastic and I find myself popping it into my CD player much more often than many other CDs.

My copy of this CD (which I bought new) includes an 8-page folder with two photos of the band (besides the cover photo), a short band biography written by Joseph F. Laredo, and a track listing with song writing and original release credits. Song lyrics are not included. The jewel case is fully transparent with another photo of the band on the inside of the back paper.

As a side note, if you are a fan of the ABC television series "Lost" this CD includes the Mama Cass song "Make Your Own Kind Of Music" that is featured on Desmond's record player in the hatch.

If you're just starting with The Mamas and the Papas, or simply want a brief overview of some of their better known songs, this is a great CD.

For more The Mamas and the Papas, check out Criterion's phenomenal DVD release of Monterey Pop (or the box set The Complete Monterey Pop Festival). This concert DVD is absolutely brilliant, and includes several songs from The Mamas and the Papas.

Item was received before he left for Europe and is much appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs on the disc.......2007-02-23

This disc pretty much has many of the essential Mamas and the Papas songs. Great sound quality. It's a real shame this band ended up breaking up.

5 out of 5 stars When the vinyl's too expensive.......2007-03-01

I simply can't afford replacing my old vinyl versions of these classic sixties tunes. Spanky and Our Gang still has that extra special something, that keeps me puttin' them on my stereo. This cd version comes across like clean, brand-spakin' new vinyl. Those were the days...

5 out of 5 stars Better than the old 45's.......2007-02-22

This CD compliation fills the need for old songs in clear quality which the old 45's (probably melted by now) can't supply. I'm entranced when I see the video of the 60's artists as I was probably doing something other than watching TV when these folks were on.

4 out of 5 stars Great lost classics, but should of used the single versions.......2007-01-22

Sunday morning, 7:15AM. I'm sitting at my local McDonalds when over the squawk box comes on "I Like to Get to Know You." This happens like once every other week. I thought to myself I liked Spanky & Our Gang when I was a kid of the 60's, and now approaching 50, they sound good again. Are they on CD? Once again, Amazon.com comes through! Universal/Mercury released this compilation in 2005 of their lost classichits.
But while this album sounds good, I must make some comments. As typical as in the 60's, the stereo separation at times is not pleasing to the ear. I found they could of done a better job in the remastering because the drums sound suppressed and you have to strain to hear them.
The major point I want to make on why they should of used the single versions deals with "Sunday Morning'" and "Echoes (Everybody's Talkin)." On Mercury Single 72765, "Sunday Morning'" you can hear the drums and near the end there was a 3 second bit of a record skipping. Its not on this version! Thats what made the song hip. This version has a dead spot instead. And "Echoes" had seashore sounds on it. Not on this CD!
Finally, when it comes to "Everybody''s Talkin," Spanky & Our Gang came out with it a year before Harry Nilsson made it a Grammy hit. Even today, Spanky & Our Gang's version is far superior that Harry's and I'm glad they did included it here.
I would recomment this album, but Mercury needs to retool and reissue it.
By the way, while I was eating my breakfast at MickeyD's two weeks ago, an old couple came in and heard "I Like to Get to Know You" and asked me "Isn't that Spanky & Our Gang?" I said yes. Indeed, lost classics!

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad At All.......2004-06-19

I never really likes Burl's songs in movies like Summer Magic, but I heard this CD at a friend's house, and I found it pretty good. It's actually very good for this type of music. Although Burl's classic folk style is not exactly my cup of tea, some of these songs are quite good. Some of them are almost jokes, but some are really fun and good. Buy it, it's not too bad.

3 out of 5 stars I love Burl Ives, but..........2004-02-29

This is simply not a good selection of Ives' songs. Several of the versions are grossly inferior earlier cuts with poor sound quality. I refer particularly to the incomparably lovely "Lavender Blue" and "Goober Peas." The versions included here were recorded in the late 1940's and later versions by Burl are infinitely superior. The only stellar cuts are "A Little Bitty Tear" and "Maryann Regrets." The rest of the songs were not big hits and are poor filler material.

Burl Ives was an American treasure and his best work has aged well and is still wonderful music. However, you won't find it on this weak compilation.

5 out of 5 stars skimpy, many songs improved over Greatest Hits CD & 5 more.......2001-12-22

This CD of 12 of Burl's biggest hits is very skimpy (as with all of these US domestic Millennium Collections have in common) but it has a few tracks with improved sound over the 1996 Greatest Hits CD plus does have 5 songs that aren't on the 1996 Greatest Hits CD and they are "Mary Ann Regrets," "The Same Old Hurt," "Foggy, Foggy Dew," "Goober Peas," and "Wild Side of Life," and all songs come from clean masters. Some of the tracks that have noticeably improved sound over the 1996 Greatest Hits CD include "Lavender Blue," "Blue Tail Fly," "Big Rock Candy Mountain" but fans should still keep their 1996 CD anyway for many more classics in fact only 7 of these 12 songs are on the 1996 CD anyway. This disc is highly recommended for several of the tracks in improved sound over the 1996 CD entitled "Greatest Hits" and for the 5 songs not on that CD.

5 out of 5 stars org.vs. new remakes by org........2006-04-17

this grass roots cd is the first original i've come acoss in a few years. in the meantime i've happen to find in the now diminshing existence of record stores that carry music of this era the quickly extinction of availablity of titles that are seeked by people of our taste. this past week i bought the dvd of the grass roots entitled "the grass roots.. goldenlegends..new stero recordings by the orignal artists. well you know what age to a band means. the voice goes, so the tunes have to be played at a lower key than the original song, also the singer can't hold the note as long as he use to. so what you end up with is a sound that is close to the original in this case, but falls short of the original sound, the great vocals adjust to the lower key and therefore we lose the original sound. this is the best original recordings compiled and availabe to the public that i've encountered in many years and i find it satisfying that i finally found the orignal voices matched with the original sound matched with the original music. listen to the music!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Set of Some Fine 1960's Tunes By A Semi-Forgotten Band!.......2004-02-18

The best songs here still hold up well. They are "Where Were You When I Needed You", and "Let's Live For Today. Both have some nice melodies and harmonies ,and lyrics that have some meaning even 35 years or so later! This is a fine Series that includes some of the "second tier" musical acts of 25-40 years ago, plus some really top acts of the time, like the Moody Blues and Supremes, and it's fine hearing some of these releases brought back to life! The Grassroots had a few top 40 hits, some of the best of the day too! So this is your chance to catch some of these fine releases that are otherwise somewhat hard to come by today!

4 out of 5 stars "Live for Today" is one of the quintessential Sixties songs.......2004-02-16

The rap against the Grass Roots is that they were essentially a studio band, but that does not take away from the fact that they produced one of the quintessential songs of the Sixties in "Let's Live For Today (Sha-la-la-la-la-la)." The song only made it to #8 on the "Billboard" charts, but has always symbolized for me what Sixties music was all about. You could not point to a quintessential song by the Beatles since the changes from the early period to all the periods that followed showed such changes and growth, but "Let's Live For Today" captures a lot of Sixties musical sensibilities. Just do not ask me to defend my position in a well-reasoned musical argument because I am sure it will fall apart. But I do know that when the Grass Roots moved into the Seventies with their music the results are not as good as what they did in the previous decade. When I get to the point that a song by the Grass Roots no longer reminds me of "Let's Live For Today" then my argument is that they have gone too far in evolving as a group.

All of the dozen songs collected on "20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Grass Roots" cracked the "Billboard" Top 40, with the other pair of Top 10 hits being "Midnight Confession" (#5) and "Sooner or Later" (#9), a pair of songs that evidence the range of the type of songs the Grass Roots recorded. One of the interesting things about the Grass Roots is that you will find that where these songs ended up on the pop charts pretty much reflects how good they are. The best of the bunch after those three is "Wait a Million Years" (#15), and then there is a discernable drop off to "Things I Should Have Said" (#23), "Heaven Knows" (#24) and "Where Were You When I Needed You" (#28). For most listeners these twelve songs will include all of the Grass Roots songs they need to own and probably get to the point where they find songs to skip when they play the CD. In other words, owning this hits collection will make the vast majority of people happy with no need to go on to a larger hits collection.

5 out of 5 stars One truly outstanding song .......2006-05-22

Richie Havens has a strong and soothing voice. This is best felt here in the 'San Francisco Bay Blues ' track. His rendition of 'Just Like a Woman' I think falls far from that of the original Dylan. Havens sounds well whatever he sings, but it seems to me that there are enough truly outstanding songs on this disk.

4 out of 5 stars Limited But Significant Set.......2001-10-15

Three '60s Havens albums were culled from and considering his prolific output, a "Best Of..." collection deserves more. But the two Jerry Merrick ballad compositions "Follow" and "From The Prison" are stunningly beautiful efforts and in themselves transcend any thematic questions. Minimalist and deeply introspective, they represent the best of the *era*. "No Experience Necessary, No Opportunity Needed" is a great uptempo work, a standout track from a standout album - "Something Else Again". In place of the last two entries, "Lady Madonna" and "Strawberry Fields Forever", I would have selected "Minstel From Gault" and "There's A Hole In The Future" from the excellent "Stonehenge" l.p.

4 out of 5 stars Much is missing.......2001-05-23

The Great Bedford-Stuy born Richie Havens is sorely under represented here, but what is presented is done well. Unfortunately, there are no entries from one of his best - "Electric Havens". I am sure I am not alone among his fans in offering to give up a tooth or two to hear a prime cut of "Spanish Boots of Spanish Leather" - far too long out of print... Somebody hear me - Richie's fans are loyal, and fortunately in the age group that can afford this Absolutely All-American Icon of the streets, the sixties and the sound

5 out of 5 stars nice collection from a great artist.......2000-03-29

these songs sound wonderful...wish there were more. I've seen Richie Havens in concert over 20 times...he never mellows, and always gives 100%. How about some more music from this great artist?

5 out of 5 stars where is the REAL box set?.......2000-03-17

Richie is one of the greatest artists of all time...now can we please see a real super-duper deluxe box set come out? He deserves it! Great disc, but there are too few songs on this to call it "The Millenium Collection"...GIVE US MORE! LOVE YOU RICHIE!

5 out of 5 stars a terrific songsmith.......2006-06-20

Unless one's name was Dylan, Baez, Guthrie, or Collins, folk artists in the 1960's had a rough time of it in the USA. There were a group of folkies ( David Ackles, Tim Rose, Tim Hardin, and Fred Neil among them ) whose songs were mined for hits with great success by Rock performers--and who still never became famous.

I knew of Tim Hardin on the strength of "Hang on to A Dream", which the Nice made into a big production, and was probably the most beautiful piece that Keith Emerson ever played. Rod Stewart did a fabulous version of "Reason to Believe".

As good as those two songs are in their original versions, every other song on this collection is just as stellar. After hearing just a couple of these tunes, you will realize that Tim Hardin was a huge influence on Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young, and especially Stephen Stills.

Tim Hardin did not have the greatest voice in the world, but he knew how to write great, unpretentious songs. There are few frills here--reportedly, Hardin was unhappy with what did get overdubbed, and would have preferred no string arrangements at all.

Listening to this album, I still find myself marveling, wondering how Hardin came up with songs that are so simple yet so profound. These are some of the best songs ever written in the 20th Century. They will endure forever.

5 out of 5 stars Mede me feel good.......2005-03-25

I saw Tim Hardin sing and he was as good in person as he is on this album. The songs are not only believable but every
song is sung so wonderfully you might miss how gut wrenching the story is. Tim was way ahead of his times. What a loss when
he died. He had so much talent and not many people even know
about him today. Rod Stewart cut Reason to Believe as his A side
instead of Maggie May in 1973. This Cd is special. Do no miss out.

5 out of 5 stars great until drugs and the 1960s did him in.......2004-09-16

i hate it when people romanticize the 1960s drug culture. they must not have seen the wrecked lives i saw. the 1960s and drug use were an unmitigated disaster for working class young people. tim hardin coulda been great. he shoulda been great. unfortunately he was a junkie. he never lived up to his potenial. live at town hall ("tim hardin live in concert") was his best album. there is only one song from that album on this cd. its a shame. almost 40 years later i can still remember his heartbreaking song "lenny's tune" (from that album) for his friend and fellow junkie lenny bruce. that song and others should be on this cd. along with bob dylan and joni mitchell, tim hardin was one of the very best 1960s singer songwriters. drug use and the 1960s did him in. these few great songs are all we have left.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album And A Great Talent.......2003-12-07

Tim Hardin was a great American singer and songwriter.
Lucky enough to see him live at the Speakeasy, London 30 years ago.

Sorry he died too young. Rod Stewart, the Nice and Bobby Darin sing his songs "Reason To Believe" and "If I were a Carpenter"

4 out of 5 stars Easy.......2005-04-24

If you don't have any music by Livingston Taylor, start with this disc. This guy sings and you relax - folksy, easy and soothing (and more-so than brother James). With the exception of "Over the Rainbow", these are great tunes - especially "I Will be in Love With You". For under 10 bucks you can't go wrong

WONDERFUL... its going to be perfect for my wedding... The song "I Love" has great meaning for the groom and I and its going to mean a lot to us when its played at our wedding... the rest of the songs are also very moving... Thank you so much

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2006-03-03

This is a great album for Tom T. Hall fans. Has his best songs on it. I have played it over and over for the messages and the music. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Tom T. Hall.......2005-10-10

Once upon a time, Country Music actually had songwriters that could sing as well as they could write; and Tom T. Hall was at the top of that list. This offering by "20th Century Masters" is superb and one of the most complete collections I've heard. From the rowdy "I like Beer" to the contemplative "Watermelon Wine" this album will bring back many memories. Of course, there are the comical (if nor hilarious) numbers: "Ballad of Forty Dollars" and "A Week in a County Jail". All in all, a very good compilation.

3 out of 5 stars Feelin Alright is a MUCH better 1 disc compilation.......2007-01-22

If you must get a 1 disc compilation, Feelin' Alright: The Very Best of Traffic is a much better disc than this one. However, your best bet is Smiling Phases, which is a 2 disc compilation that costs as much as a 1 disc one.

5 out of 5 stars Traffic : Rock and Roll!.......2007-01-11

This millenium collection of Traffic harbors a great selection of their songs and "Little Stevie Winwood" is at his best in "Dear Mr. Fantasy". Made me enjoy their music all the more! They really know how to rock...

4 out of 5 stars For the Uninitiated.......2004-03-23

Traffic was one of the finest bands of the clssic rock era. It produced four stellar talents, infused rock with jazz and psycadelia, yet never reached the heights it deserved. This album is a good overview of their better songs, however, it is only a small scratch of a big itch. It is only an overview, for the unititiated. For a real taste of Traffic's spice try the two-cd anthology, which includes some great songs neglected here, like "When the Eagle Flies and "Glad." Personally, I'd recommend you spend the extra bucks and get the double cd.
