Editorial Reviews
David Johnson, New England Folk Almanac, January 1997
Bok and Kallet make excellent Neighbors: smooth, mellow, and soothing, with plenty of lively instrumental moments interspersed.
Product Description
Gordon Bok and Cindy Kallet, (almost) neighbors in midcoast Maine, offer an excellent collaboration of their talents. These two highly creative artists and superb instrumentalists have performed together a number of times and it is our good fortune to have a collection of some of their favorite songs, including "One for Winter" which they wrote together.

Do you love tightly wound pop tunes but lack enough hours in the day to deal with art school pretensions of, say, the Arcade Fire? Ease over to Merge label mates the Rosebuds. The Raleigh, North Carolina indie rock band is fronted by Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp, who reportedly played their first show together just a week after they got married. How's that for fuss free? Even better are the tunes on its second album, Birds Make Good Neighbors. A little more subdued than the songs on its firecracker debut, Make Out?, yes, but hardly lacking brains or bite. Besides, those Kinks influences still shine through on the swooning "Hold Hands and Fight" and the shout-along "Shake Our Tree." It's reassuring to know someone is still making noise for college radio without crash helmets. --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description
Raleigh, NC's Rosebuds are back with their second full-length, marking an astounding growth in stylistic range and songwriting maturity from their 2003 debut, "The Rosebuds Make Out". Incorporating influences as diverse as The Kinks, The Go-Betweens, The Smiths, and The Zombies, this husband and wife team have perfected the three-minute pop songs they rolled out on "...Make Out" and have taken adventurous forays into a denser, more lush soundscape. A beautifully realized pop album that will have you dancing, laughing, crying, and ultimately left breathless.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic...I beg of you to get it.......2006-01-29
How often does an album come out by a band --that most likely you haven't heard of -- that doesn't have ONE bad song on it? Well, this is one right here. Hold Hands and Fight, Let Us Go, and Shake Our Tree are the best songs on the album, and the last one is as irresistable as a second potato chip: it should be an anthem. I hope this band does well...they deserve it. Excellent musicianship, lyrics, and the singer has a wonderful voice, too. It's been a while (The Shins maybe?) since I've heard songs so downright infectious!
I really like this album really I do you should know that I really do.......2005-12-12
This is a band that makes you wish the music industry would take a hint once in a while, but what are you gonna do huh? Honestly if you're looking at this to see whether you should buy the album or not, let me just say. This band is good, they are very easy to like, both interesting for their innocence as well as their passion to make you like music for the good old fashioned reasons you know because of love and having a good time. Whatever happened to music like this? They care to charm you, and maybe you should care too once in a while.
trees make good houses.......2005-11-06
They've always had this great sound going for them, but they really find a voice on this album and bring the songs into sharper focus.
Where the debut had a few songs which seemed trite and by-the-numbers (i.e. "Kicks in the Schoolyard"), and the preceding E.P. was a little blurry for all it's sonic payoff, "Birds Make Good Neighbors" gels extremely well as a whole. The songs feel carefully crafted and recorded yet still come on like a sugar rush.
A Small Triumph.......2005-10-15
Though the previous Rosebuds releases are all enjoyable in varying degrees, Birds Make Good Neighbors is a small triumph: perfectly realized pop, beautifully observed. It would be easy to overpraise its qualities, and set up bad voodoo with overwrough expectations. But for fans of other good pop bands such as Nada Surf or Dios Malos or Old 97's, there's no reason not to get on board with this.
It's a matter of personal opinion........2005-09-18
And my opinion claims that this album is one of the best this year, right there with the likes of Bloc Party, The Bravery, Maximo Park and Franz Ferdinand. The problem is that The Rosebuds will likely get the least recognition. Which is not fair, as this album could be successfully argued the better album of all the former mentioned bands.
"Birds Make Good Neighbors" starts with what is now the best Rosebuds song to date: "Hold Hands And Fight". The song starts soft and melodic, after one minute however it picks up and enduces one of the most melodic vocal melodies yet by The Rosebuds. The song makes the best use of the expression "whoa" ever.... ever. It's enchanting, really. "Boxcar", the next track, is another really good track. The song starts off a lot similar to "Back To Boston" from "Make Out", but proceeds to differentiate itself with the rest of the song. "Leaves Do Fall" is an amazing song, which has husband and wife, Ivan and Kelly, trading vocal duties. "Shake Our Tree", which is the second best track on the album, has a nice beat with an ambiance of clapping that would in fact provoke clapping. It also has an extremely good chorus. The album ends with "4-Track Love Song", which has a slow 80s sonic guitar sound. VERY nice, it definitely finds itself on multiple repeats from me. Other notables are "Outnumbered", "Warm Where You Lay" and "The Lover's Night".
With only a few months remaining in the year, this album is without a doubt one of the best yet. It's nearly perfect if not for two songs, which is not unlike any other great release this year, but "Bluebird" and "Wildcat", which seem repetitive to me, could have seen a change up or two. In a year which as seen so many great releases, The Rosebuds just proceeded to cemented themselves on the top of the pile.
Pick this one up for sure, and look out for the new releases by Rogue Wave, Franz Ferdinand and especially 31knots.
P.S. 31knots sounds nothing like these other bands, I just wanted to mention them as I am obsessed with their music.

Customer Reviews:
Really, really good.......2004-04-22
If you want real music then buy this album, boycott East Bay Ray and Manifesto Records. If it says Dead Kennedys or Jello Biafra it's not worth it unless it's on ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES.
Excellent.......2004-01-06
Jello with anybody is good. This is great. If you're into the punk scene, check it out.
Jello Biafra with DOA.......2003-06-11
I don't know how many years I've had this on vinyl but it's still superb. Whenever Jello Biafra teams up with other bands (Nomeansno, DOA or Minstry) they create something spectacular. This is no exception.
There is some good stuff out there by the individual artists (Fresh Fruit... Psalm69) but if you can only but one - buy this one!
Jello with DOA - Great Stuff Maynard!.......2001-08-21
I'd heard some Dead Kennedys in the early 1980s, and had bought "Inc God We Trust, Inc." Loved 2-3 of their songs, enjoyed many of the lyrics of the rest of the songs.
When I saw the positive reviews for this 1989 CD, I decided to try it. I bought it last week. The other fans were right, this is a TERRIFIC compact disc. I not only enjoyed the first song and its cadence thoroughly, it was a delight to hear the remake of "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" from The Animals.
Biafra is just as clever and charismatic as ever. He sounds terrific with DOA. At least as good as any old material, maybe even better. In fact, I'm playing it again right now...
Better than most DK stuff.......2000-12-20
These reviews do not lie. This is an incredible album. It came out of the Terminal City Ricochet soundtrack. The music is loud and powerful--it lacks the surfiness that the DK sound had, which makes this album all the more heavier. The lyrics are top-notch. Fans of this should also check out the Jello with No Means No album "The Sky is Falling I Want My Mommy"--equally good.

Album Description
A well-known country songwriter that got his start as Emmylou Harris' guitarist, Rodney Crowell had his first hits with the songs "Elvira" and "(Now and Then There's) A Fool Such as I." But What Will the Neighbors Think was Crowell's second album, and spawned the charting single "Ashes by Now." Influenced by co-producer Craig Leon (Blondie, the Ramones), it took a distinctly more rock "feel" than his country-rock debut album (1978's Ain't Living Long Like This). The second album on this pairing was his third release, produced by Crowell himself, and includes such highlights as "Stars on the Water," "Shame on the Moon" (later a hit for Bob Seger) and "'Til I Gain Control Again."
Customer Reviews:
At Last! But What Will The Neighbors Think? .......2007-05-14
Sure, I've owned the BWWTNT LP and the other first 3 since Day One, like any other Rodney, Guy, Gram/FBB, & Emmylou fanatic, but to finally have it available on CD [thank you Collectables Records] is like Christmas all over again. I've searched high and low for this, even though I've burned a copy from one of my many copies.
"But What Will The Neighbors..." was my #1 LP from 1980, as I used to rank every album at years' end every year back then.
My favorites include "Heartbroke", "Ashes By Now", "On A Real Good Night", "Oh, What A Feeling", and "Queen Of Hearts". Guy and Albert should be proud. Not taking anything away especially from Guy Clark. Everything Guy Clark writes/sings deserves A+'s or 5*'s, too!
At Long Last.......2005-04-06
Neither of these albums has ever before been available on CD, although some of the tracks were included on 'The Rodney Crowell Anthology.' Released in 1980, 'But What Will the Neighbors Think" was inspired by a trip to the U.K. and the emerging "New Wave" scene. Ramones producer Craig Leon gave Rodney a stripped-down, almost punkish sound, 180 degrees from his debut "Ain't Living Long Like This." Here you'll find RC's original version of "Ashes By Now," plus a couple of real corkers and a lovely ballad, "The One About England." The self-titled 1983 release isn't as successful - the best songs were excised for the Anthology - but together the two make a powerful argument for Rodney's pre-country, pre-Big Hit music. He was already in top form here.

Customer Reviews:
Pleasant Enough.......2007-02-19
A pleasant score. Fine singing, especially the wonderful Liz Callaway. The score, however, doesn't have those one or two numbers that stand out and stop you in your tracks. I haven't seen the show, and perhaps when integrated with the text.....
Pure joy.......2005-03-08
I have bought this CD with Wild party and each of them was amazing. Fist I have heard Wild party and after that I haven't thought that I would enjoy the second one but Brownstone was simply so amazing. I didn't skip songs, because all of them are beautiful sung by actors who's singing voice are pure, strong and wonderful.
As you can see, I'm a true Brian D'arcy James fan but each singer amazed me, really.
Buy this Cd if you want to hear a fantastic musical.
A Different Type of Musical.......2004-03-09
I bought BROWNSTONE at the recommendation of a friend and have mixed feelings. I know this show has quite a history as far as transfer from off-Broadway to Broadway and the controversy surrounding its revamping for its journey to the Great White Way. I think the songs are catchy and clever, I just am sort of turned off by the orchestrations. The instruments sound like they are coming from a computer built in 1990. They sound too fake and I think there could be better orchestration, though the melodies are nice. Some songs are just corny like The Cell Phone Song, added only recently. Certain songs are great like The opening, Fiction Writer, Camouflage, and Babies on the Brain.
I would say that if you are looking for a musical CD to add to your collection that is a little different from what you're used to, BROWNSTONE is for you. And also, it features an amazing cast of seasoned veterans and new comers as well.
All in all, a nice CD.

Album Description
The towering tree at Rockefeller Center, midnight mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Bing Crosby singing White Christmasthese are among the core snapshots of an American Christmas. A holiday that fuses the sacred and secular, high-gloss entertainment and deep spiritual meaning, Christmas in the United States is built on longstanding rituals at the same time as new riffs are continually being invented. It has its own distinct identity, and in one of the most culturally diverse societies on the globe, a Christian holiday has risen as the country's most prominent.
The striking array of works conducted by Judith Clurman on this recording open a window onto the many facets of a contemporary Christmas. Most of these compositions were first performed at one of the annual Christmas-tree-lighting ceremonies at Lincoln Center, where Clurman has directed music-making since 1992, and many were commissioned for those events.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful affirmation of American invention.......2001-09-30
Judith Clurman knows how to work with singers, and the sound of her chorus is sumptuous on this CD. Just what you might want to have playing as the family is gathering for the holidays. And in a time of questioning and re-examination of what makes us Americans, the fact that this CD represents a wide variety of American composers doing their best to connect to beloved traditions makes this CD a winner. Hats off to New World for making a CD the record companies never would have...
