Jim Roll slid through the 1990s a virtual secret to Ann Arbor, Michigan, and his hometown, Chicago, a singer-songwriter who once gave up the biz to get into social work. But a chance meeting with Walter Salas-Humara (the Silos leader who produced Lunette) led to a comeback and now Roll's second record. Backed by Texas guitarists Jon Dee Graham and Gurf Morlix, Lunette jumps out of the gate with "1955," a nostalgia ride that echoes the early Eagles, then veers from banjo-and-lap-steel country to acoustic folk to alt-country rockers. Salas-Humara's aching vocal style has obviously rubbed off on Roll, and Mary Rowell, whose violin defined the Silos classic Cuba, lends a haunting hand in "These Winds." With Lunette, Jim Roll's secret is out of the bag. --Scott Holter

      5 out of 5 stars A Hidden Treasure.......2004-10-18

This is one of the hidden treasures of the music scene the last few years. Roll had been an amateur musician and songsmith the last decade or so and then his hometown label, One Man Clapping, released his debut 'Ready To Hang' in 1998. A year later he is working with one of the greats in the business, Walter Salas Humara, as producer and has guest musicians of the highest calliber like Gurf Morlix, Jon Dee Graham and Mary Rowell laying down tracks for him. Mr Roll has proved worthy of the attention.

The opening track "1955" is a perfect little piece of ear candy about longing for the simple life of the past. Another highlight is "She Aint Gonna Go" which finds our protaganist rationalizing his relationship among rootsy guitar licks and terrific female backing vocals by KC Groves.

If you hate the music of Lucinda Williams and The Silos you probably won't like this but for everybody else this is a record you need to check out.

4 out of 5 stars like listening to 40 minutes of great radio.......2001-04-24

with all due respect to the privous reviewer, there is no such thing as 40 min of great radio.

with that in mind. yo can't go wring with this CD

      5 out of 5 stars Lush Americana.......2000-06-30

This one really caught me by surprise. A great great album that alternates between folk/roots-influenced pop and literate contemporary grooves. In fact the songs cover so much territory musically that the experience is like listening to 40 minutes of great radio. Top-notch songwriting and fresh, irresistable, hooks. I cannot say enough good things about this record.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Work of contemporary roots music.......2000-06-30

This is a beautiful, strange and diverse collection of surreal yet familiar songs. Jim Roll is a master of the sparse loveletter in musical form - often conjuring the essence of early Tom Petty, Neil Young, and perhaps a male Lucinda Williams. The writing is exceptional and the production by Walter Salas-Humara of the Silos (featuring an allstar line-up of Gurf Morlix of Lucinda Williams' fame, Jon Dee Graham, the Silos, and Kevin Wimmer of Balfa Tujours) blankets Jim's voice and songs wonderfully. Definitely in my top 3 CD's of 2000.
