Album Description

On their second album, Fairyland improves on their unique mix of Symphonic and Speed Metal, showcasing a collection of tracks that are epic, arresting, and discerning. Swift as arrows, guitar riffs duel with virtuoso keyboards, while monumental string arrangements and heroic choirs add the powerful yet melodic finishing touch. A must-have for fans of Blind Guardian and Rhapsody, though the members of Fairyland undoubtedly follow their own musical path.

5 out of 5 stars best Rhapsody album since "Dragonflame".......2007-04-04

At last, Rhapsody has returned to the Dawn 0f Victory-era symphonic speed metal that made them one of the most imitated bands of the past decade. They've even evolved a little beyond it, adding female vocals in some of the later tracks (which actually works well here), additional instrumentation, slightly more complex vocal melodies and a few progressive elements in the songwriting.

Don't be distracted by the fact that this band is called "Fairyland" and that none of the members of Rhapsody, past or present, participated in making it. This is Rhapsody! Seriously, though, most of this album is much closer to true Rhapsody than anything "Rhapsody "of Fire" is doing.

This album isn't quite as good as the real Rhapsody was at their best when they were in their prime. However, the sound is often very nearly identical, and it is more consistent in its quality, the lyrics are better (though very similar), and the accents less noticeable. It's more of a four and a half star album, but I'll spring for the full five partly because the truly outstanding artwork in the cd booklet earns them a bonus; and because getting rid of that tone-deaf she-devil from old Dark Moor that was the vocalist on their first album earns them a bigger bonus (maybe she will take the hint and finally retire, since she can almost single-handedly ruin any band she is in). In any event, this one is a mandatory purchase for symphonic metal fans.

5 out of 5 stars A Superlative Sophomore Release.......2007-02-05

When I wrote a review on Fairyland's first album, The Wars in Osyrhia, I poked fun at it, with a fictitious call to France to interview the wounded cow (Elisa C Martin) who appears on the album at inconvenient times, wailing along, with the lovely music. Well, no more!

Fairyland is back with their sophomore effort, The Fall of an Empire and it is nothing, if not sensational! This is a solid effort of pure symphonic power metal. Like their first release, The Fall of an Empire still has the catchy mediaeval melodies, lovely choirs and orchestral sounding backing. Deduct the wailing cow and add a female singer that can sing and you have perhaps the best Symphonic Power Metal these ears have heard in five or six years, when the magnificent, A Time never Comes by Secret Sphere, was released in 2001, followed by the equally superlative, Hastings 1066, by Thy Majestie in 2002.

Track one, Endgame, is an instrumental introduction, something common for this genre. Tracks four, Slaves Forlorn, and eight To the Havenrod, are instrumental suites or interludes if you prefer. Sandwiched between the first two instrumental are two typical but well done Hard driving power metal songs, The Fall of an Empire and Lost in the Dark Lands. Awakening is a nice varied tempo power metal number with strong keyboard work followed by a beautiful softer song, not quite a ballad, also with excellent piano playing, Clanner of the Light is a high production, fast tempo, driving song, followed by the aforementioned suite, To the Havenrod.

Track nine, The Walls of Laemnil is also a fast moving metal song. An excellent medium speed number, Anmorkenta, follows it. In Duna is one of only two true ballads, the other being track thirteen, Look into Lost Years. Both are pleasant folk sounding song sung by a female vocalist. The Story Remains at over ten minutes is the longest and therefore the most complex, variable paced, epic song, with great keyboards and guitars. The last and bonus track is another melodic hard driving power metal piece, Across the Endless Sea.

CONCLUSION

If The Fall of an Empire has a weakness, it would be the lead male singer. Not that he's bad, but he could be better. When the male choirs sing along with him, they sound better.

This album was released in the middle of January, so that makes it a 2007 release.
I know it's early but as it stands right now, The Fall of an Empire, is the album to beat for 2007's symphonic power metal album of the year. Then again, I hear Therion has a pretty good album coming out, so we'll see

4 out of 5 stars Speed Metal?.......2004-08-13

Lets get one thing straight, Slayer is speed metal. These guys are energetic, progressive, rock. I saw this in a bargain bin with a CD from Angra. I have never heard any of these bands before and already I wanna go back and grab some more. Unlike speed metal bands, this band has a singer that can carry a tune. Also you don't feel like putting a gun to your head after listening to it.

Nuff Said.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best power metal albums ever!.......2004-06-07

I first heard Freedom Call after seeing them support Virgin Steele and Hammerfall live. I then bought this album at the gig afterwards.
The style of Freedom Call is highly reminiscent of Helloween, but the guitars sound far chunkier and more headbangable! The choruses are often happy sounding, but in a good way, the singer Chris Bay is excellent and the harmonies on this album are great. I can't overemphasise how good the songs are on this album, they are very catchy indeed!!!
If you are even remotely into power metal, check these guys out. This is in my top 10 power metal albums ever. Crystal Empire the followup is also superb. Best songs on this album - Over the Rainbow, Another Day.

4 out of 5 stars An inspiring beat..........2002-08-02

Upon hearing this CD played through once, the following description came to mind: heavy-metal religious music as written by Middle-Earth bards. Many of the songs on this album DO have heavy religious overtones, but that hardly takes away from its total feel. The music and lyrics sing of great quests without the obscene references usually found in heavy-metal music. A great work.

5 out of 5 stars Surprise, surprise!.......2001-02-07

I just discovered this band last week, and boy am i taken by storm! I was expecting more average power metal, i.e. (labyrinth and Emperium) but this disc is done in the vein of classic bands such as helloween and gamma ray. Superb musicianship and out of the ordinary chord changes finished off with some of the most glorious choruses ive ever heard make these guys a must to check out. The disc is based on a story not unlike the deliverance of the hebrews from egypt, very cool. I cant wait to hear what crystal empire (their new soon-to-be-released disc)has in store for us.

5 out of 5 stars Climb the Stairway to Metal Land.......2000-01-13

Chris Bay (Vocal & Guitars) * Sascha Gerstner (Guitars) * Ilker Ersin (Bass) * Dan Zimmerman (Drums). If you are looking for the Power Metal at it's best in the style of Helloween - Gamma Ray - Iron Savior.... Here it is! Chris Bay (Moon'Doc) shines through with his high melodic vocals in the style of Michael Kiske & Geoff Tate. The band also incluse a solid low end provided by Ilker (Moon'Doc) and Dan (Iron Savior - Gamma Ray) and the neo classical influenced guitar style of Sascha. Buy this one and you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars A PHONE CALL TO FRANCE.......2005-01-01

"Hello France?" "Bonjour, does any one there speak English"?

"Wee, I know it's France but I don't speak Francais"

"Ok, Ok, can't you just calm down and find me someone that speaks Anglais?"

"Oh thank God, there is someone in France that speaks English, thank you mademoiselle, thank you!"

"Yes, Yes, I'm trying to get in contact with a French band named Fairyland or their lead singer Elissa C. Martin."

"Well yes, you see they made this recording called 'Of Wars In Osyrhia', quite fetching really, lovely melodies, a strong almost heavenly symphonic epic power metal with an orchestra and choir, a masterpiece really until they let that cow sing."

"Yes I said cow. There are parts where they have this wounded cow wailing along - well almost along - with the music. I mean, it really screws up everything, I mean cows don't sing too well anyway, let alone wounded cows"

"Let's see the Drummer/bass player and founding band member's name is Willdric Lievin and the Keyboardist's name is Philippe Giordana."

"No, I don't know the cows's name. How about the Guitar player, his name is Anthony Parker and he used to be with 'Heavenly'"

"Ok, that's the number for Parker, you're sure?"

"Wee,I suppose he is Catholic, ha ha."

"Thanks oh so much, you've really been a lifesaver. Have a good life!"......."what's left of it"

    "Bonjour monsieur, is this 'Fairyland'?"

"Now just a minute there Buster, I didn't mean anything by that. I'm looking for a band named 'Fairyland'. Yes I can tell, your voice is very masculine.".............."yes I'm sure your wife thinks you're a demon in bed. Is your number 94-479-02-45? Ach, I mis-dialed, sorry to have bothered you and impugned you obvious masculinity."...."chump"

"Bonjour monsieur, have I reached the band 'Fairyland'? Agent huh? Well, I have some questions about their debut - 'Of Wars in Osyrhia', can you answer them?"

"Well, sir first I want to tell you that the record is very pretty with the men's choir and all but how come the production isn't better, I mean sometimes it sounds like your lead singer is singing in the next room?"

"Oh, I see, it was recorded in an Orthadox Synagogue and Elissa was singing from the balcony. Strange place to record an album wasn't it? Hummm, the band played a barmitzvah just before the recording session."

"Well, let me ask you this, are you the cow's agent as well? ...... You know, the wounded cow that wails and moans when the wonderful men's choir sings. It's very distracting. ......Wait a minute that can't be Elissa, I remember her from Dark Moor, she's pretty good, at least she used to be. Are you sure there's not a wounded cow? I promise I'm not from the Humane society." ......No I'm American! ......No I can't help who is my president any more than you can help the bum you got"

"Hello, hello. SOB hung up on me! French!

    CONCLUSION

So there you have it, the mystery of the wounded cow goes unanswered. In all fairness, the music is, as I have mentioned quite good not unlike a Rhapsody, Freedom Call or Kamelot, mostly speedy, sometimes slower and more varied like tracks 1,4,7,10, symphonic power metal with lots of great background singing from the mens choir but the singing, as my son would say, sucks, wounded cow and all. Final Rating: Music - four 1/2 stars, Singing - one star, Production - three stars, Band name - one star, Average - weak three stars.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for power metal fans!!!.......2004-12-13

First off, let me say that I rarely take the time to review a cd, but this one is worth it! Fairyland is a virtual blueprint for melodic, symphonic power metal. Excellent production, powerfull choruses and great songwriting. This cd reminds me very much of the first Rhapsody cd. It has the singer from Dark Moor, and sounds very similar too dark moor, with more (early)Rhapsody influences. Even if you can't find this cd for a lower price than Amazon, its well worth it!!

5 out of 5 stars Don't know where they came from, but they can play!.......2004-04-24

First of all, I want to clear up that this is a pretty good CD. For those of you wanting something to listen to other than your favorite CDs, this one will do for you. Sure, Fairyland sounds like a clone of Rhapsody, but that's a good thing, isn't it? More exactly, I find this album to be more like Rhapsody's older material, particularly Symphony of Enchanted Lands. The folk sounds are identical to something that Rhapsody would do, the choirs are the same, and the fast bass sounds are identical. So for anybody wondering, this does not sound anything like Elvenking - a band often said to be folk metal. Elvenking doesn't sound like Rhapsody at all. Its just that they play folk metal. If you didn't already know, the singer is from Dark Moor - Elisa. ...that's a girl's name, by the way.

This CD is only a year old. The production will make you shiver. If you like a band such as Edguy just because of the production, you'll love this CD. If you can't find a picture of the cover art, I'll tell you: Its not atmospheric, but it is very well done and sets the scene for happy metal. Also, the title track is an epic (11 minutes) and there is only 1 track (the intro) that is very short. The album is about an hour long. There's also a ballad, but the lyrics aren't about losing a lost love or anything. Its like Lamento Eroico and The Sound of the Blade.

So if you're not familiar with Rhapsody, how do you classify their sound? Take Dark Moor and throw in Heavenly's speed. Secret Sphere would substitute for Heavenly if you haven't heard of them. Its hard to describe the sound without saying that they're like Rhapsody. Its really a unique sound. Overall, I recommend this album to any metal fan. True metal, of course.

If you get the time, go read some of my other reviews and say if they were helpful to you or not. Thanks for reading!

4 out of 5 stars History has been preserved for those who appreciate it.............2001-01-13

Unlike the other review, this is a recording that touches the soul of the true Broadway afficianado. Original cast recordings of musicals were not standard in the American Musical Theatre until the early 1940's. However, the London stage had been preserving original cast performances since the early 1900's. This album preserves two of the most popular operetta titles of all time - Romerg's Desert Song and New Moon.

The sound quality is poor by today's standards, but you are hearing the original London cast, usually in the original London theatre, with the original conductor and orchestrations. To a true musical buff, to hear the original interpretations is a walk in history.

We are very lucky to be able to hear Pearl London cast recordings of Desert Song, New Moon, Show Boat, Sunny, and Lido Lady. The only other archive type recordings are the historically accurate remakes by John McGlinn and Tommy Krasker. These recordings are lost to the human ear, other than the 78's in antique stores and these reissues.

So, if you appreciate the musical art form and the sense of history, you will truly appreciate this recording. If you're looking for the lush sounds and liberal interpretations of the 50's - move on - this isn't the recording for you. If Pearl is reading this - PLEASE get us some more 20's original cast recordings!

            1 out of 5 stars Desert Song.......2000-11-10

What a disappointment!! I remember listening to this when I was a child on a soundtrack my father had. This version sounds terrible. I don't know if its the CD or the singers that recorded this particular CD - but they've butchered the songs. The timing of the songs is TERRIBLE and they don't sound full and rich like they should. I was really disappointed. Its not worth the money.

              Product Description

Fairies and mythical creatures have inspired musicians around the world through many centuries. Indeed, myth and magic, kings and queens, princes and princesses, form integral part of the culture and story telling of most nations. Stories which began as crucial myths for a race or nation have today become children's stories which still facinate adults.
