If an artist can be judged by the company she keeps, the vocal harmonies of Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Rodney Crowell, and Julie Miller on Jude Johnstone's second release attest to the esteem she enjoys from fellow singer-songwriters. Though Johnstone's songs have been recorded by singers from Bette Midler to Johnny Cash, the confessional conviction she invests in the title track, "Hard Lessons," and "Pen and Paper" makes her material seem as personal as a diary. As a narrative of marital breakup, "20 Years" has a melodic bounce at odds with its lyrical despair, yet most of the settings for these older-but-wiser reflections are as somber as Johnstone's writing is poetic. Some listeners might find the results a little precious, self-consciously so--as if musical maturity mainly involves the morose acceptance of painful truths--but fans of artists from Jackson Browne to Nanci Griffith should recognize a kindred spirit here. --Don McLeese

Yet another original fighting to get through............2005-06-19
I remember back in the late 70's when a new singer/songwriter
performer named Karla Bonoff was a "hot" songwriter and established artists took notice and covered her song catalogue
until she to finally got her own recognition. I see the same thing happening to Jude. She writes some wonderful stuff and the
likes of Bette Midler to Bonnie Raitt have covered her emotional
turf. This collection has some outstanding songwriting and
open hearted Joni Mitchell like realism injected into the mix,
very moving material.
Well worth owning. Jude is one of our NEW & BEST songwriters.
Leaves you wanting more.......2005-03-13
I have only one complaint about this CD: It's too short!
By the time the last track begins, I'm already wishing it was a double album or, better yet, a box-set with 100 tracks of new and old material, demos, covers, Christmas songs, commercial jingles, and Jude singing phone book listings. I just don't want the music to end.
I first heard Jude perform when she opened for Shawn Colvin last year at a show in California, and I truly can't remember the last time I've had such a strong initial reaction to a performer. I remember specifically being floored by her performance of "Doesn't Anybody Know But Me" from her first CD, Coming of Age, and "Old and Gray" from this CD. Although I was there to see Shawn Colvin, I must admit that Jude stole the show that evening with her performance and gained a life-long fan in me.
It seems that every review written about Jude's CDs makes note of the fact that Jude has written hits for many top artists like Johnny Cash, Bonnie Raitt, Trisha Yearwood, and Stevie Nicks. While that does bear repeating here as further testimony to Jude's talent and reputation as a top-notch songwriter, it shouldn't overshadow Jude's talent as the exceptional performer she has proven herself to be on stage and on both her albums.
Jude's second CD, like her first, is filled with highly emotional and intelligent music which will appeal to music lovers who demand substance in their music-listening experience. Jude's music requires "active listening" and is not, as Jude terms it, "music to cook by." Although the instrumentation on this CD is beautiful in and of itself, it is not by any means merely pleasant background music. To fully appreciate the CD (and Jude's complete body of work for that matter) one must really listen to the lyrics as well. All the tracks on this CD tell interesting stories of life's everyday occurrences--of "busted heart[s]" and watching "friends go one by one"--all told through Jude's use of vivid imagery and storytelling.
Her most obvious "story" song is "Evelyn." The lyrics tell of Jude's arty (for lack of a better word) great-aunt who was expected to become the next "Clara Bowe or...Harlow" until a fire left her disfigured and relegated to "playing piano for the silent shows." Jude's impeccable word choice makes the young girl's heartache palpable to the listener while completely avoiding the maudlin tone a less-talented writer would likely have set in telling such a story.
Jude uses some wry humor in "20 Years," to recount the story of the decay of a marriage. Jude tells of a wife who, when dealing with her husband, cannot "connect the dots on his page" and the husband who sardonically states, "Go ahead and take the kids/ I'll see them twice a year." The potentially depressing topic of divorce becomes almost deceptively lighthearted in the adept hands of the songwriter.
A personal favorite is the last track, "The Hereafter." Written about the death of a family member, the song manages to be inspirational without being preachy or precious. This track contains two of the most poignant and affective uses of imagery on the album: "...the sky up above us/ Is filled with red wings/ As they welcome you/ In the hereafter" and the CD's last line, "Now the wind's at your back/ And whatever you lack/ You will find it/ Out in the hereafter." Pure lyrical perfection like this, coupled with a beautiful and memorable melody, makes this track a standout while also representing ALL the tracks on this CD.
In the title track Jude sings of being left "wanting more." After listening to this CD you will feel the same way.
a real jewel.......2005-02-27
Jude's first cd was a hard act to follow--given it was filled with great songs which had already become famous from the cover performances of other singers. It was great for many reasons--especially to hear her take on songs we thought we knew. But, this new collection is magnificent. Just one great song after another. It would be a surprise and an injustice if several aren't taken up by others in additional cover performances.
First, her instrumentalists. Jude accompanies herself with piano on virtually every song--recalling the noble tradition of the singer/songwriter performing from the piano. She knows just how to accompany herself and does it beautifully. Mary Ramsay's violin and viola are superb. Didn't she do the same for Patty Loveless? Co-producer Charles Duncan acquits himself finely on guitar, organ, slide guitar, bass and poignantly on pennywhistle. He also does some backing vocals, along with an amazingly talented group of others--most especially Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Rodney Crowell and Julie Miller. Jude certainly knows how to use these voices to particular advantage in each song.
What can I say about the songs? They are all good, many are great...from the fine title tune which opens the cd to the amazing simple chorus of "Hold On," the sad and lovely "In This House," the poetic and image-filled "Old and Gray" (sung with Julie Miller), "Evelyn"--a wonderful, autobiographical song, the plaintive yet somehow hopeful "Pen and Paper," the sharp imagery and moving chorus of "Deep Water," the painful dilemma expressed so well in "Long Way Back," and the final song--a stellar, lovely tribute to a lost comrade--"The Hereafter" (with an amazing pennywhistle being played). It's a grand, impressive collection. What's amazing, as well, is how Jude--with a dusty, low, narrow-range of a voice--can sing so well and so rightly the emotions expressed in these songs. She's terrific.
In spite of the darkness and sadness in many of these songs, Jude finds reason for light and hope in many of them. I hope the talented Lori McKenna is listening and can find similar light and hope in future songs. She didn't in those on BITTERTOWN.

Funny, but sometimes weak.......2000-11-28
This album is funny, but weak. It is amusing to mostly feminists and lesbians. I found extremly amusing. I look forward to their next one....thats all I really have to say.
Ani Difranco-Esque.......1999-10-31
Their explicitly feminist lyrics rage about the politics of our world, pulsating with Bitch's deep bass and backed by Animal's amazing handwork on the ukulele and tongue drums. Animal sings back-up and often chants to her drum beat, as they sing lyrics like "I'm sick of race determining our rage, America I feel your capitalist cage... push the system out of me, shake the system out of me" and "keep the people down, infest their heads with fear, then offer them a crutch and charge them way too much." One of my all time favorites on the album is a playful, humorous song called "drag king bar" These girls are the best LIVE - I would highly recommend catching them if they ever come to your area - as the CD really does not do their music too much justice - it sounds as though it were put together rather hastily, and the sound is not the absolute best -- this is why I would only give it 4 stars - but they are great girls, and they are definitely on their way UP!!!! If you like Ani Difranco, you will love these girls as well!!!! *** Make sure that if you DO get this CD, listen to the extra track at the end called "Pussy Manifesto" it is an amazing little chant backed with Animal's crazy drum beats, and incredible voice. It questions the implications that male and female genitalia have on our gender associations. For instance, they ask, why is it that if you are a manly man of courage, then you must have BALLS! But, on the other hand, if you are a weak, scared person, then your a PUSSY?? Why is that? And why do we tolerate this sort of gender slander?? Hmmm... If any of these issues are thought-provoking for you, then you would love this CD, because it is FULL of these sorts of questions, and I would highly recommend buying it as soon as possible!!!!!! :)
Bitch and Animal rock the world!.......1999-10-12
Bitch and Animal are the radest women that have come around in a long while. I STRONGLY encourage any woman who believes in herself and in the inherant power of her being to listen up to Bitch and Animal - they are soul refreshers and power givers!
not for the faint of heart.......1999-10-05
although i was initially shocked by the hard-core, uninhibited lyrics of bitch & animal, after listening to their incredibly clever lyrics and seeing the excellent show that they put on (opening for Ani DiFranco in Albany, NY)i was thoroughly impressed. Although I would not recommend this one to my grandmother, b&a introduce an innovative musical spin to gender/transgender performance art that is not only intelligent but highly entertaining.

All glory to shri Krsna.......2005-02-23
What a welcome release this has been. Never previously released on CD, this reissue comes sounding a whole lot better than the album ever did but without any additional tracks.
This is the last of the "holy trinity" of Qunitessence albums, the remaining two being somewhat lower down the list of must have albums.
Unlike the self titled Quintessence this album marks somewhat of a change in direction by the band whilst at the same time remaining true to form. Whereas the second album was a fusion of studio and live performances, these are primarily studio recordings but with a live feel. During the time that this album was made Quintessence continued their touring and left no-one in any doubt over the power and reach of the band live. While most of the songs led to the improvised playing which had some dancers almost in ecstasy the studio recordings eschewed that aspect and as a result are considerably diminished in my view as a result. The reputation of Quintessence as a powerful live act was maintained by this album although, unlike their west coast cousins without religion the Grateful Dead, they were able to produce a decent album bouyed by the live act. The strains are beginning to emerge within the band characterised by a poorer quality of the songwriting and a more self-indulgent approach as typified by the mere six relatively lengthy tracks.
The first of these, Dive Deep treads no new ground, preferring the obvious safety of the blistering guitar solo which bears much similarity to St. Pancras on the second album but without the range. On Dance for the one, Raja Ram's flute again goes over the same ground as on the earlier albums. Brahman and the Seer are the weakest songs in my estimation although in performance the improvisation is the saving grace but which is denied the listener here. Epitaph for tomorrow and the Sri Ram chant are the remaining tracks and are strong in their own way but the latter in particular is a little lengthier than it perhaps ought to be.
The sleeve notes record the emergence of tensions within the group which led to their most unfortunate demise following this album.
It may not be the strongest of the Holy Trinity but it does represent the band just after their peak whilst they were still a great draw as anyone witnessing their performances will bear out. I would certainly recommend this album although I do mourn particularly the lack of unreleased live tracks which would raise this album to the heights for which it was intended.

Album Description
"Voyage To Afghanistan" is a weird and wonderful little masterpiece. Lyrically it never fails to entertain with little twists and clues, almost like the "12 Monkeys" or "Fight Club" of CDs. Musically its kinda like the Beatles meet Radiohead,Lou Reed and Bowie in a bar and they get the bartender to sing. What I really love about this CD is the layers. On top, the songs fly by beautifully and sound great, but if you wanna go deeper there is a plethora of incredible images and tie-ins. Dig In, "Voyage" is a very satisfying meal.
Customer Reviews:
Underground music for Overground dwellers.......2006-03-24
some stats: 'Voyage To Afghanistan' (1995-97) 13 tracks TT= 55:06
(printed lyrics included)
It's hard to pidgeonhole this cd. Suffice to say that it is very accessable underground rock-pop, with a strong emphasis on the lyrical storysongs of Abraham Cloud (AC). The whole cd feels like a very independent effort, singular, homespun and homegrown (yes,THAT kinda homegrown).
'AC's vocal delivery is reminiscent of a lower-registered Bowie or Lennon, sung in a scruffy, fuzzy and loose (but not sloppy) way. His perceptions project a certain "stoner certified attitude" which propel the various lyrics in engaging, witty and socially sharp observations of Living in general...and life in southern California specifically (the locals will make the references anyway).
The music has all kinds of twists and turns in it making it interesting throughout. Seven of the 13 tracks are preformed with his band (drums, bass, lead guitar), the remaining 6 has AC doing all the wizardry including some sophisticated electronics. These "solo" tracks are the the most idiosyncratic and "psyched".
As I stated earlier, this is VERY accessable 'Underground' music by an artist with a singular vision that FEELS good, complete, and easy-going. It is not hyped, obtuse, contrived or high-brow genius.
Abraham Cloud's music has a rocking groove throughout, and still manages to include threads of folk, pop, and even chamber music. Never pretentious or "obscured by cloud"...it's the perfect bong-load. Just right.
Sgt. Pepper Revisited.......2000-06-06
The feelings I get listening to this Cd is John Lennon if he had lived and went through another very creative period. Its very entertaining and story oriented, and each song is its own little "trip."
