Customer Reviews:
One of Joni's Very Best.......2007-08-01
When I first purchased this CD some years ago, I tried to it a few times and decided that it wasn't for me. First, it wasn't what I expected from Joni Mitchell. Second, I didn't know what to make of the music. After awhile, though, melodies from a couple of the songs came percolating back into my head and I came back to this CD. Now it's permanently in my player.
What I can say about this music is that it is eclectic and interesting, jazzy in part, creative and very, very good. It is hard to pigeon-hole. But it's not too challenging to be an easy, enjoyable listen in the car on the way to work. Or playing in the background on a late weekend morning when you're making breakfast. That's an eclectic blend hard to achieve but Joni somehow does it in this remarkable CD.
If you've tried Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm but found that it wasn't for you, then try it again. If you're a Joni Mitchell fan but have yet to experience this CD, then you should. Creative genius has a way of sneaking up on you and then knocking you out.
Skunk at the Picnic.......2007-02-03
I dug this CD out of my collection yesterday, put it on, and started working on the computer with "Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm" playing. The opening duet with Peter Gabriel was pleasant enough, but by the time I heard "Lakota" chanted over and over, I realized this CD was both dated and discordant. As I tried to sit through a duet of Billy Idol and Ms. Mitchell, I wondered what twisted muse had inspired one of my favorite singer/songwriters on this less than stellar recording.
There are some bright moments here and there, but Ms. Mitchell's better works do not, in my opinion, include this album. I see from reading some of the other reviews that I am apparently "ignorant" or worse, and I'm sure that I'll soon have as many negative votes as a porcupine has quills for daring to state a qualified assessment of an icon's work.
Guess, I'm the skunk at the picnic on this one.
Unfairly Underrated........2006-01-01
Many (ignorant) people dismiss Joni's '80s work and don't even give it a chance. In my opinion, she has never made a weak album. Every single one is well crafted and well executed. Critics get caught up in comparing each album to the last one. Joni is a painter, and approches her music/albums the same way. Each one is a completely different piece that stands on it's own. She's never made the same album twice, and has never been afraid to experiment and take chances. This is a beautiful record. There are many duets with a wide range of people (Billy Idol, Willie Nelson, Peter Gabriel, etc.) I would recommend this or anything in the Joni catalog. She really amazes me with her consistant elegance and brilliance.
Very beautiful if I do say so myself........2005-12-22
This album was recommended to me by a friend and I've really enjoyed it. The songs are very well crafted and very detailed. The lyrics are intelligent and thought-provoking, so it's definatly not background music and is very much complex. I love the way the album flows. I'm really interested in getting into Joni even further. I really like her writing style and she's extreamly unique and creative. Buy this album!
Powerful And Cinematic Work........2005-12-20
Honest and powerful lyrics blended with atmosphereic and beautiful melodies add up to this triumph of a record. Joni is in complete control of her muse and artistic vision and it's very much apparent on wonderous bits like "The Beat Of Black Wings" or "Lakota" There is a driving ebb and lush cinematic sweep to these songs that is simply gorgeous. Joni is a prolific and accomplished artist way ahead of her time. Her legacy will live on forever, and her flawless discography and archives hold testimate to that.

Some truly hypnotic stuff here........2007-02-08
This was my introduction to the music of Karine Polwart and I think she is a superior talent, in terms of music and lyrics, with a singing voice to match. When she hits "the right notes" she sails right to the top. I can't keep some of her songs out of my head -- my favorite being the title track "Hole in the Heart". I also love Take Its Own Time, Baleerie Baloo, and I'm Gonna Do It All. The other songs are less interesting to me but the gems on this album are so good, they're worth it all. I also like this album better than her earlier "Faultlines". That's just my opinion.
A PHENOMENAL WORK.......2006-08-20
Karine Polwart's album Scribbled in Chalk is a phenomenal effort... Hole in the Heart is simply the best pure song I have heard this year; haunting music and words that no matter how many times I hear it, it just gets better.... A combination of a voice that sounds airy and delicate at first but resonates surprisingly strongly when called for; memorable, original melodies crossing over from the folk tradition to contemporary, lilting pop; lyrics that range from wry and insightful storysongs to imaginative poetry to love songs that have grown on me and wormed their way into my being and my every day thoughts so much so that I find myself recalling the album while working or driving.... Isn't that what good modern music and songwriting are all about?
If you want poetry, read poetry........2006-06-29
I don't agree with the below reviewer's approach. If you want to judge an album you don't merely grab the inlay card, read the lyrics and that's that. It seems that's what she/he did. What about the music? I don't find the lyrics too trite anyway. Karine Polwart has a great voice and can write great songs. Nothing groundbreaking, of course, but it is a consistently enjoyable contemporary folk album.
a disappointment.......2006-06-07
Ahh, this is a real shame. I had heard such good things about Polwart and am really getting into the rich seam of folk music out there at the moment so was looking forward to hearing this.
Sadly the album is fairly run of the mill with only one or two songs of note. Lyrically it is cliche-ridden and borders on bad teen poetry at times:
'You ceased to mow the lawn ten years ago
You just wanted to see how your garden would grow
You abandoned the pruning shears and welcomed each weed
You permitted the soil to select its own seed'
If you think the above is the height of poetry then there is a strong chance you'll enjoy this album. I didn't.
Dull.

Customer Reviews:
What's not to like about contemporary music?.......2006-07-08
Ever since I first heard Javelin, I have looked for more recordings of Michael Torke's music. I resisted old recordings offered at a very high price after some effort and was delighted to find this collection containing a wide perspective of his work ranging from the color pieces (Green, Cool Blue Music, Ecstatic Orange) to the vocal Proverbs to the utilitarian tool music. Don't miss it.

Unreal!.......2004-11-04
This is without a doubt one of the finest pieces of sound art I have ever heard. Andrew Chalk is the only artist I know of who is on par with the Hafler Trio when it comes to producing mind-bending drone "music". There is no way to describe this "music" but if your a fan of other drone/sound artists such as Hafler Trio, Nurse With Wound, Organum, Mirror etc. get this while you can.
