5 out of 5 stars One of the best songs of all time.......2005-09-22

City of Blinding Lights shocks me every time I hear it. The sonic chords created by the edge's guitar are amazing and the lyrics are perfect. I have heard just about every U2 song and I think this is the song that sums it all up. City of Blinding Lights is U2 in a nutshell. Sonic architecture (if that makes any sense) that builds and builds until the blazing conclusion. After this song is over "WOW" is all that comes to mind. If you are thinking about buying the single, don't, buy the whole album, it is excellent.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not compelling.......2005-09-21

This CD single from the UK contains an edited version of City of Blinding Lights from U2's How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb album, as well as two live tracks from a 1992 concert in Manchester, England. The version of City of Blinding Lights is apparently intended for radio airplay and is about 90 seconds shorter than the wonderful album version. This radio edit is fine, but I much prefer the luminous album version.

The live tracks, a sinister version of The Fly paired with a pretty good version of Even Better Than The Real Thing, are good but not exceptional. The same can be said of the quality of the recording and mixing. Much better versions of these songs can be found on the Achtung Baby album and, in the case of The Fly, on the Elevation Tour 2001 - Live From Boston DVD.

This CD single is therefore a 'must have' only for those who collect everything U2 releases.

5 out of 5 stars U2 is always good listening.......2005-09-02

Love the band. Love the concert Love these songs.

4 out of 5 stars City Of Blinding Lights.......2005-07-20

Single # 4 from U2's latest release 'How to Dismantle..' is here along with two live tracks from 1992, 'The Fly' and 'Even Better Than The Real Thing'.

'City Of Blinding Lights', is no doubt one of the stand out tracks from their latest disk, which makes it an obvious choice for a single release.

It is presented here in it's 'radio edit' version [4:11] vs the [5:47] album version. The intro is significantly shorter, as is the ending, but in no way does that lessen the effectiveness of the song. In fact, it might even enhance it.

The live tracks are enjoyable as well, but are probably essential only for U2 completists.

Bottom Line: Great Single!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Beginnings.......2005-05-17

Not only is this album an amazing beginning for the incredible band known as cursive, but it is also an amazing followup to what emo is all about. Think about 1996 when this album came out. The only other emo bands were sunny day real estate, texas is the reason, and mineral(personally i dont count weezer). This band brought alot to the table and continue to make beautiful music to my ears.

4 out of 5 stars "I could get used to this...".......2004-05-27

I know that a lot of people say this in a lot of reviews, but all the other reviewers here don't know what they're talking about. Speaking from a completely unbiased point of view (having never heard "the ugly organist", the album that everyone seems to be comparing THIS one too) this album rocks. Flat out rocks! If you like bands like "At the Drive-In" then you WILL like this. No question. If you hate new radio mainstream rock, you will LOVE this album and everything it represents.

2 out of 5 stars listeners above age 20: pass this one up.......2004-05-07

this album sounds like the radio version of fugazi. bubble gum fugazi. high school punk. their later albums such as "Ugly Organ" and "Burst and Bloom" which are beautiful and original, you can't help but loose your mind over and playing live they ROCK! but this one, sorry kids, is a flop...

5 out of 5 stars This album could change your life........2004-04-18

This is my favorite emo record, for that matter my favorite record of all time. It's full to burst with Tim Kasher's unbridled emotion and musical genius. I can't say enough about how great this album is. Part of me wants me to keep this masterpiece all to myself, but the truth is that you owe it to yourself to buy this album.

2 out of 5 stars not up to par.......2004-01-08

with cursive's other CDs. This is my least favorite album from cursive, I just can't listen to it! I couldnt imagine that was possible after loving the Ugly Organ, Burst and Bloom and Domestica, but this CD just doesnt compare to those other albums.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Something ain't right.......2007-02-08

Definitely not as good as "Down in Albion". THAT record is magic. This ep is...I dunno...nothing special. It's missing something. Mick Jones? Junk? Not sure. I had high expectations from Pete, and this was a bit of a let down.

5 out of 5 stars Shambolic Fun, Brilliant Lyrics, Great Music.......2006-12-21

Pete Doherty continues to amaze me. Ignore, if you can, all the hype about his drug use and sex life, and just listen to the music. The Blinding is a powerful song, almost as strong as F**k Forever from Down In Albion. Love You But You're Green will be familiar to those who downloaded the Acousticalullaby album a few years ago, and although that original solo acoustic rendition remains the superior version of the song, this one holds its own. I Wish just puts a smile on your face and makes you dance, like a great Jamaican ska or rocksteady track. Beg Steal or Borrow is reminiscent of Don't Look Back Into the Sun and Time For Heroes, the anthemic Libertines tracks, and although it makes you wonder how many times Pete can get away with rhyming 'tomorrow' and 'sorrow' it's a great song that seamlessly blends joy and melancholy, as many of his songs do. The EP closes with Sedative, a kind of drunken singalong that could have come from the same night that produced Merry Go Round. The chorus is infectious. Look for the live version online with some slight lyric changes and a less garbled vocal performance. If you think Pete Doherty is just a waster, this album won't change your mind, but if you know what a brilliant songwriter and performer he is, The Blinding will not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars All Because of a Remix.......2006-07-25

I had hesitated to purchase this single but still needed one track to make my HTDAAB home-brewed deluxe edition cd complete.
My only hold back was the reviews I had read. Well, I took a chance was thrilled at what showed up in my mailbox.
Although the edited version of City of Blinding Lights is unnecessary,
the Killahurtz Fly Mix of All Because of You more than makes up for it. The mix is longer and way different than the original. The upbeat tempo of the mix really get's you moving as only a good club mix can. You get it all with this mix, incredible Edge guitar effects, Bono trip vocals, bass sequencing and drum loops!
My deluxe edition is now complete and well worth the effort it took to make this one of a kind mix. Once again I've learned, a TRUE fan should always go by his gut feeling and not let someone's opinion or review keep them from the thrill of the adventure. For those curious on how my mix turned out, the track listing is as follows:

1. VERTIGO
2. MIRACLE DRUG
3. SOMETIMES YOU CAN'T MAKE IT ON YOUR OWN
4. LOVE AND PEACE OR ELSE
5. CITY OF BLINDING LIGHTS
6. ALL BECAUSE OF YOU
7. A MAN AND A WOMAN
8. CRUMBS FROM YOUR TABLE

14. NEON LIGHTS
15. A MAN AND A WOMAN (ACOUSTIC)
16. ARE YOU GONNA WAIT FOREVER?
17. ALL BECAUSE OF YOU (KILLAHURTZ FLY MIX)
18. ELECTRICAL STORM
TOTAL RUNNING TIME: 79 minutes & 57 seconds

I tried a few different versions but think this one came out best. Use mine or create your own.
As for U2...the show in Dallas was awesome and you guys are still the Best live act out there. Peace.

2 out of 5 stars Fans who aren't fanatics should save their money.......2005-09-21

This CD single from the UK contains a radio edit of City of Blinding Lights together with a remixed, extended version of All Because Of You. The original versions of these songs are on U2's How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb album.

U2 CD singles often have very good live tracks or outstanding remixed or reimagined versions of great U2 songs. Whether it's a great dance remix, or a darker interpretation of a favorite song, in my experience U2's imported singles are often very worthwhile, even for those of us who don't feel compelled to buy absolutely everything the band produces. Since the two songs collected here are my favorites from U2's latest album, I had high hopes for this single.

I'm sorry to say I was disappointed. The City of Blinding Lights is fine, but the longer album version is far superior. The remix of All Because Of You is interesting, but not exceptional, and does not rise to the high standard set by many remixes included on other U2 singles.

I would recommend this expensive single only to collectors who must have everything U2 releases.

4 out of 5 stars The Blinding Light-Glass Bullet.......2002-12-31

Where to begin.....In short, this little ep is incredible. This band plays an amazing blend of hardcore/metal in the vein of Slayer but with definite harcore tendencies as well as some very convincing doom on one track. All of the songs on here are great with my only gripe being that a couple of the guitar lines could stand to be a little stronger in spots. But make no mistake, this is VERY HEAVY music. If your one of those people that likes their metal screamy, (very)raw, technical, and imaginitive, this is the disc for you. I think fans of bands such as The Dillinger Escape Plan, Botch, Slayer, Candiria, and maybe even Neurosis might really like these guys. Watch for their first full length by mid 2003. These guys have major potential. The major reason that I didn't give this disc 5 stars is that the production could be better. You can hear everything very well, it's just a dirty sounding record. I know some people prefer this, but I think better production would do the band the justice it deservers. Excellent music.

The BLINDING LIGHT - The Ascension Attempt
-
Whoa!!! Progressive Hardcore? This is a damn tragedy that there are like 3 reviews for this CD, as far as I'm concerned this is likely the Best Hardcore I've heard in years.
The Blinding Light combines blistering, relentless hardcore pummeling with a strong sense of Rhythm and Melody. But what really makes this album special is `Aggression'... The last album I can think that even touched this album in its viciousness would be Vision of Disorder's Imprint. (Which also likely the last Hardcore album which blew me away like this.... Or Candiria's 300% Density.)

See my big issue with much of modern hardcore would have to be the faux tough-guy sounds... boring repetition of hatebreed style chugs and generic screams about kicking someone's ass. The great thing is that they seem unafraid to explore the more eclectic side of music. (2:45 of, Wake Up/The Wind Up is a good example of this, or even the intro to Earth Razor.)

Really the only flaw is the one dimensional Vocal styles which he harnesses for the majority of the album. But let's be honest for a debut this is a very minor criticism... Not to mention the main scream/yell he does is just freakin awesome.

A Previous reviewer had mentioned this would appeal to fans of Burst (Another eclectic Prog-Hardcore band) and Burnt By the Sun (A Sadly departed intense hardcore band.) I couldn't agree more... Also I would recommend it for fans of the classic V.O.D. This is Hardcore for People who dislike Hardcore... Fantastic CD.

5 out of 5 stars Only one review? Oh hell no!.......2004-09-08

In an age when jaw-droppingly mediocre bands like Nickelback and Maroon 5 can regularly sell millions of records, it's tragic that an instant classic like this one can garner so little attention. Its lack of recognition notwithstanding, "The Ascension Attempt" is easily one of the best albums to be released this year, a relentlessly genre-blurring exercise that helps mark the continuing evolution of heavy music. Navigating the fine line between hardcore aggression and metal precision is harder than it may look,
but the Blinding Light really do make the task seem easy, combining loads of emotion with airtight musicianship to create a sound that's as intelligent as it is abrasive. If I had to come up with some parallels, I guess it
would be safe to say this album's overall sound is somewhat similiar to that of Converge's legendary "Jane Doe" and Burst's recent "Prey On Life," which is not at all a bad thing given that those are two of the best heavy albums
of the past five years. Like those bands, the Blinding Light does away with the traditional norms and restrictions of heavy music, creating winding, unpredictable song structures, injecting some moments of quiet reflection to provide an occasional break from the sonic onslaught, and topping it all off with an unmistakable musicality that's tough to find in any genre.

The opening track, "Wake Up/The Wind Up," is five minutes of pure grinding agony, with the frightening howl of Brian Lovro assuming center stage. On the aptly titled "Routine Seizure," guitarists Tim Munce and Chad Petit get to show off their chops, alternating ear-piercing bursts of noise with fits
of crushing riffage. Driven by grooves heavy enough to flatten downtown Boston, "I Can't Slow Down" and "Ammunition" are actually somewhat catchy in their own twisted, scary way. "Earth Razor" and "Alive" even introduce some
grindcore elements into the mix, with the band ramping their attack up to ludicrous speed as drummer Josh Ferrie blasts away in the background. The best track here, though, is the curveball "Hydrant," a grinding, doomy, Converge-style epic that sees Lovro's vocals alternating between tortured
shrieks and reflective singing.

If you're one of those people who tend to head for the hills upon hearing the word "progressive," "The Ascension Attempt" just may be enough to change your mind. Along with other recent arrivals such as Mastodon, Burnt by the
Sun, and the aforementioned Burst, the Blinding Light are helping to put a new face on heavy music as it moves into the new century. An album this diverse and forward-looking is an especially pleasant surprise coming from such a new and little-known band. "The Ascension Attempt" now has TWO
five-star reviews to its credit. What more could you want?

5 out of 5 stars One of the best hardcore albums of the year........2004-05-21

This is one of the best hardcore albums I've heard in the last two years. The Ascension Attempt is set far apart from just about everything else out there. It's so dry and metallic, and at the same time, extremely groove-driven and heavy. There's a lot of metal influence, but very little room for generic instrumentation, and so there really isn't much that isn't completely original. The Ascension Attempt is far from boring or empty-the entire album is chock full of aggression and emotion, with a constant blend of metal and hardcore very few bands can pull off.

The Blinding Light, more than heavy and aggressive, is a bizarre mix of violent and quirky. Aside from the brutality of the album, there's a certain weirdness that is almost impossible to put your finger on-there's a slower, strange few second part in the third song, and various others, that are complete breaks from the raining brutality. In addition, there are some slightly sludgy, Isis-like parts, which throw an entirely different feeling into the mix.

The vocals are amazing, admittedly quite Slayer-like (also ex-Threadbare)...you come to parts in this album where you wonder if it's even hardcore at all, and if not, whether this band even fits into any category at all. The Ascension Attempt is overdriven, raw and unrefined, a particular production style that doesn't always go over well with people-however, it compliments their style perfectly. Enough said: you want something new? As overlooked and unnoticed as this band was previously, this album is a masterpiece in every way.

    5 out of 5 stars The 3" Single You Can't Be Without.......2005-08-29

I would have bought this CD for the radio edit of City of Blinding Lights alone, but the inclusion of the live take of Out of Control made my decision to purchase this single an instant decision. Out of Control is my favorite U2 song, and this version I believe is better than any previous version. It is reminiscent of U2's early days, and exemplifies the unique union of heart-raising rock and meaningful lyrical message that U2 is famous for. And when you hear Bono sing, "The goal is soul!!" at the end of Out of Control, you know that the band will ensure the quality and existence of this union for quite some time.

    4 out of 5 stars Blinded.......2005-07-13

U2 has arguably still proven to challenge a lot of younger, manufactured acts all over to listen to what Pop music really is all about. Arguably, they've proven it already with the three previous hits from How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb: All Because Of You, Vertigo, and Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own. Their latest hit single, is in that category as well. City Of Blinding Lights, is a driven soulful remarkable song, and has just so much feeling that has been made into that track. It is just a really great track, and tells a remarkable story of loss, and emotion. It is a really good song, and one of U2's best.

      3 out of 5 stars Munkafust: WHOA!.......2001-02-18

I never expected this sound coming from such a band - sharp lyrics combined with West Coast rythmys make SOME of the songs excellent. However, I hated Helmet Party -the lyrics just didn't seem to work too well with the sound. A good CD - you oughta have it, but be prepared to be surprised with this eclectic collection of great songs! Keep up the good work, Munkafust!

3 out of 5 stars It grows on you [Memories of Santa Barbara Salad Days].......2001-02-01

This is the best album Munkafust has released since their initial offering, "Way Too Much Inertia" (still my favorite). The opener, "Control of My Heart," along with "Feel My Pulse" and the title track, "Down For Days," stand out among this ecclectic collection of songs. Some others ("Yeah Yo," "Helmet Party") are a little too schticky for my taste, but musically they are solid tunes. The chorus of "Helmet Party" is strong--unfortunately, it is dragged down by the subject matter.

Overall, I gave this album three stars for solid musicianship (thank the Lord for that UCSB music education!) and a few standout tracks. Upgrading the intellectual level of some of the content might have made this a four-star affair.

For the time being, I'll enjoy this album for what it is and keep listening to "Way Too Much Inertia." [keep up the effort, Evan]
