Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Heron originally formed in England in 1968 and have since been described in the pages of Mojo magazine as one of the most collectable bands around. Thirty years after their original formation, Heron recorded this album in the village of Black Dog in Devon, England. As keyboardist Steve Jones put it,'reliving our past but bringing it up to date'. The band has retained its unmistakably English sound and the songs are as unique as ever; still as relevant today as they were 30 years ago. Like many of their earlier albums, Black Dog was recorded outdoors and has a unique musical style of simple, pastoral, folk-rock, with a gentle, 'English summers day' feel. It's a delightful record, which will thrill fans of the original band and deservedly win them a coterie of new followers. Hux. 2005.

A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

5 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2007-04-18

Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

5 out of 5 stars Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2007-03-11

this is a nice collection of upbeat on the road songs! If you liked the movie you will like the CD

5 out of 5 stars Driving my life away.......2004-09-26

I thought the movie had good points (the action was dead on as to what can sometimes happen with trucks and cars in accidents) and bad (the theme not all drivers are bad). I'm a trucker and sometimes other drivers don't think before they do things or worse they figure that we have all those wheels so we have to have more brakes. not true. I liked the movie because it gave people a different perspective. The sound track has gotten me through many long miles and long hours. "Highway Junkie" being my favorite because as my trucking uncle and my dad say once the diesel gets in your blood you can't get it out.

4 out of 5 stars For those long hours on the road............2002-01-16

It's ironic really that I hated the movie "Black Dog" but yet I LOVE the soundtrack. "Black Dog" is one of the coolest country soundtracks ever. There are a few love songs on the CD, but the lot consists mainly of trucker anthems, which coincides with the movie's theme. And with people like Lee Ann Womack ("A Man With 18 Wheels), Gary Allan ("Highway Junkie"), Randy Travis ("My Greatest Fear") and Patty Loveless ("On Down The Line") adding their talent, you know you're getting something worthy.

Highlights on the CD include: the bluesy "Road Man" by Big House, "We Can't All Be Angels" by David Lee Murphy, the Bruce Robison penned "Drivin' All Night Long" (Jack Ingram), and "I Wanna Remember This" by Linda Davis. And finally there's "Drivin' My Life Away" by Georgia boy Rhett Akins. Akins hits the nail right on the head with his remake of the classic Eddie Rabbit tune. It's a kickin' song that does the original justice and is one of the best tracks on the album!

If you're looking for a good traveling CD, "Black Dog Soundtrack" is the one you should get. It'll definantely get you through those long hours on the road.

4 out of 5 stars A Focus On The Life Of A Truck Driver.......1999-07-07

This good collection of contemporary country music focuses on the life of truck drivers. This C.D. taught me to like country. The best song on the album is "My Greatest Fear" by Randy Travis. Buy it to listen to on your next road trip.

I've Been a Soundgarden fan for many years. It's very difficult to pick a favorite song, but "Kyle Petty, Son of Richard" is one of the strongest B-Sides I have ever heard. It's as good or better than "Bleed Together" from the 'A-Sides' greatest hits compilation. It could have easily been included on 'Superunknown'.

If you like Soundgarden or Audioslave and haven't heard this song, this CD is worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing sounds of Led Zeppelin..........2005-03-01

Before I write my review, I thought you would like to know that I have not had a chance to listen to "Kashmir: The Symphonic Led Zeppelin". Keep that in mind if you are trying to decide between the two.

I think I would consider myself an average Led Zeppelin fan. I appreciate their music, and I listen to them every so often. I'm not one of the hardcore Zeppelin fans, so you might not appreciate this tribute as much as I do. I would have to say that this tribute is very well done, and a lot of time and effort was put into making it. The strings are pretty much in sync with the original songs, and just a few seconds into the song, you'll be able to tell what it is. I'm not going to go through a list of songs and tell you what I think of them, but I will say that I think the best one is "Ten Years Gone." This album - or albums, I should say - are great if you're looking for a soothing and relaxing version of some of the great Led Zeppelin songs. Though, I must say that you will only appreciate the tribute if you know the songs themselves, because if you don't then the song just might get repetetive. I'm a fan of the whole String Quartet Tribute thing, and I'd have to say that this is one of the best ones I've heard so far.

2 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea.......2003-11-18

For some reason this CD just sounded really corney to me. I was really dissapointed. Your opinion may differ but I would recommend that if you are looking for a classical Zeppelin CD you get Kashmir instead. It is cheaper and shines a new light on some awsome songs rather than butchering them.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, Led Zeppelin Done Well in Strings........2003-02-20

A few of the selections are questionable for arrangment for a string section. I mean, Whole Lotta Love? Dazed and Confused? Give me a break. They could have replaced those poor choices with a number of other possibilities.

Nevertheless, it is the first attempt of it's kind, and the songs that are suitable are gorgeously performed.

Led Zeppelin's gifts for creating melodies and knowledge of music theory become more obvious in these classical performances.

It's a double CD so it has lots of songs!

I have most of blue mountains work, and this cd by Cary. I can't get enough of this blend of folk/rock and blues. There are precious few artists out there that can make a varied cd like this and pull it off without sacrificing content. Listen close to this cd and it almost sounds like it was done in one take, very raw and unpolished. Because of this, many folk will not appreciate what was done here. If you attempted to remix and tweak the production, you would lose the integrity of the recording. There are many excellent tracks here, and almost no filler. Jellyroll and What the Old Man told me are killer tracks, and the softer acoustic numbers Little Darlin and Don't Hasten Away are just as good. If you like this style of music that is very difficult to find, pick this one up. You will be amazed at the quality of content.

5 out of 5 stars Jonesing for More!.......2004-09-26

This is easily the most accomplished of all of Cary's work that I am aware of. There is not a bad song and he touches all the bases that we have come to know him for. Alt-country/alt rock gems, blues rockers and acoustic blues and folk and some great dog howls.
Cary has made a lot of great music in his career and this is a masterpiece. I am already jonesing for more!

5 out of 5 stars Mississippi is Alive in Here.......2004-09-07

Fans of Blue Mountain won't be disappointed in this CD. Cary has stepped it up a notch, and turned up the distortion a bit, but his old time country and blues background are still here. The guy can flat out play some mean guitar, and also write a great song. If you can catch Cary live, don't miss it. He is a treasure who needs to get the recognition he deserves.

i respect the whole neo-classical thing, but this cd is bad. sounds like somone sequenced the songs in their synthesizer. check out http://www.thetributeto.com/acdc/ . they perform their tributes, and do it well. i haven't heard their ac/dc tribute, but their other tributes (linkin park, 311, coldplay) are awesome.

    5 out of 5 stars Totally Suprised!!!.......2003-09-01

I read about this CD on an AC/DC Fan site and they had a link to purchase it here. I bought the CD without hearing any clips or anything. So, buying it sight unseen, made me feel a little aprehensive.

Well, when it arrived I couldn't wait. I took it with me to work and played it in the car on the way. WHAT A GREAT CD & A GREAT IDEA!!! I love this CD! After hearing how well done this CD was, I decided to do something special for my wife ....and .... I took the next day off from work (which was a Friday) and prepared a wonderful steak dinner while my wife was at her job. I got a really good bottle of wine and I set the table with our finest table settings ... Candles lit and everything prepared ...When she got home, I had the candles burning, the lights were out, the table was set and I started the CD.... KAHPOWW!!! She freaked completely out! Needless to say, we had a wonderful time and what a way to romance my Rock & Roll Queen!!!

We've been fans of AC/DC since the 80s and this is probably one of our favorite AC/DC CDs, now!

I would suggest this CD to anyone who loves AC/DC and wants to add some spark to their romance .... We have candlelit dinners a couple times a month now and this CD is the main attraction!!!

Spanners takes the dense polyrhythms and complex melodies that Black Dog explored on Bytes and builds an engaging and endlessly listenable sonic maze for your enjoyment. At times it's a straightforward techno album, but in true Discordian fashion the styles are random and slippery; the 12 tracks, held together by short musical "Bolts," bob and weave through Latin, Arabesque, and even country styles, ensuring a surprise around every corner. Unfortunately, the Black Dog split up shortly after this album's release, with Ken Downie continuing the madness with a series of decidedly unmemorable albums, and Ed Handey and Andy Turner moving on to create further gems as Plaid. But their legacy remains: Spanners is an album for which the term "eclectic" doesn't quite do. It's simply a masterpiece. --Matthew Corwine

If your a music geek and particularly an electronic music fan this is an absolute must have! There arent many out there, get one while you can. Before hearing this I though BOC's MHTRTC was the greatest electronic album, it has now been pushed to second place.

5 out of 5 stars Simple complexity and complex simplicity; a MUST own!.......2004-12-07

This album contains everything I LOVE about Electronic music: a passion and dedication for/to idea, thought and beauty, with little to no regard for what you, I, or anyone else might think. This album is like an intimate confession or admission to the listener. Tracks like "Nommo" are defiantly hypnotic while tracks like "Pot Noddle" are carefree and innocent, almost childish. And never once is this album over-bearing or over-the-top. You never find yourself uncomfortable or wondering why they've done what they've done. It's all very tangible, yet extremely unique.
If you're new to the Electronic genres, this is an EXCELLENT place to start: the flavor varies all of the spectrum and the HUMAN element is unmistakable.
That's perhaps the greatest aspect of Electronic music: RARELY can it sound dated or "played-out" or old. I have albums that I bought new 5 years ago and still listen to faithfully to this day! It's like favorite foods: if you like chocolate cake today, chances are, in 20 years, you wouldn't turn down a piece of it if the mood took you!

    5 out of 5 stars A must-own electronica classic.......2004-07-18

After reading the rave reviews of Spanners on here, I broke down and bought it. Plaid being my favorite band, it wasn't realy a hard decision, and it was certainly well-rewarded.

One of the strange and very unique things about this CD is that while the sounds are very "classic" -- i.e. a lot of analogue synthesis going on -- there is a very modern feel to the melodies in the songs. One of the songs on the CD is about discovering materials from outer space, and it's funny, because that's kind of what this music feels like -- something that wasn't entirely made on this earth, something that has a very odd element of mystery to it. These guys really know what they're doing when it comes to composing the melodies and beats, and the CD, clocking in at over 70 minutes, is a very good work overall.

    The highlights for me are:

#5 Psil-cosyin: the beginning vocal samples (Arabic) coupled with samples of some middle-eastern horns lend this tune an interesting organic feel that plays right with the cold percussive sounds and synths. The beat itself is very well-crafted and very groovy. There's no instant gratification as this song builds very well over the whole 10 minutes to three very nice and very varied climaxes. The initial feel is one of wonder, as I might imagine I'd feel if I saw the pyramids or something... it then turns into a sort of hopeful/bittersweet feel for the second climax, and then gets a bit scary/serious toward the end. Overall a great piece.

#8 Tahr: just a great funky beat with a very nice and interesting melody over the top. Great bass work too. Get out your dancing shoes for this one.

#11 Nommo: nothing particularly out of the ordinary on this track but the synth melody that plays throughout is just beautiful; another example of the somewhat mysterious feel that this CD takes on. It makes me think of how I'd feel as I was preparing to land a spaceship on a new, undiscovered planet. Very nice.

The sound quality on this CD is also very good -- some percussion tracks are almost too crisp and clear, but it doesn't detract from the great feel of the CD.

Overall, this comes together as one solid work, worth much more than simply the sum of the individual tracks. If you're a Plaid/electronica fan then I would definitely have this album.

5 out of 5 stars Follow up to classic 'Bytes' album.......2004-01-18

Although not as good as their previous album, 'Bytes', 'Spanners' is a superb album. If it were by any other artist it would be hailed as a classic. It's just that what Black Dog did with 'Bytes' was so spectacular, it tended to put whatever they came up with as a follow-up into the shade.

There is a more ethnic feel to this album. Waves of arabic touches flow in and out of the music on here, lending it more of a middle-eastern feel. But it didn't overpower the usual qualities of their music, the innovative drum programming, melodic tracks, all what we recall from 'Bytes'. It just tended to add another dimension to their music, that's all.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice album!.......2004-01-09

Yes, I can see why this gets an average of 5 stars, and like another reviewer said, I can't believe that it is out of print now! I was lucky enough to find a used copy here on Amazon, and if you at all a fan of Plaid I would highly recommend picking this up if you can find it. I've still only listened to it a couple of times through (I only got it a few days ago, along with two Prefuse 73 albums, so I've been quite busy) but it has the same ambiguity of melody that makes Plaid's music so deep and thought-provoking. It's the kind of CD you can enjoy if you're into the technical aspects of music, or if you just want to lay back and relax to some good techno. Very atmospheric melodies are layered over interesting and unique beats, adding up to a very original product that, at least in this stage of things, seems to have a lot of relisten value. This is an electronica classic that nobody should be without. Highly recommended.
