4 out of 5 stars Good for what it is - soothing.......2007-07-03

Serrie began his professional life scoring the music for planetarium shows. Even though there is no music in space (without an atmosphere, sound can't exist - it's like thinking that you can have waves without water), the premise here is that this music gives you a sense of the expanse of the universe and the movement of the spheres. This is new age music. I like it in small doses - the whooshing synthesizers as they crescendo and decrescendo - all of this can be very relaxing. It doesn't stand up to close examination though. Better to have this for when you want to nap or nod off.

5 out of 5 stars Very Soothing.......2007-01-10

This cd is definitely one of the best in the Space Music genre. I feel as though I am floating through space or admiring a view of the earth from the moon. I heartily recommend this cd for anyone who has trouble sleeping or who just wants to expand his/her mind.

1 out of 5 stars Celestial Heaven.......2007-01-10

I enjoy New Age music that can take my soul for a journey through the stars. This is one of my favorite CDs for relaxing.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant and Sublime.......2004-03-27

As a long time fan of Jonn Serrie, I am very happy that he has returned to his "roots" of cosmic space music after his brief sojourn into more "earthy" music that he did on Spirit Keeper, etc.

This premier artist of cosmic music that is used worldwide at Planetariums is reknown for his floating, ethereal music that allows one to dissolve into bliss as an instant fix for tension and stress particularly at the end of a teeth grinding day. On this CD, Jonn has created some of his most elegant and sublime music to date.

Favorites: #2 "Eye of the Beholder" is achingly gorgeous; #4 "Pan Galactic" is stunning and #5 "The Stars, like Dust" is like really being out there floating around the cosmos in an imaginary starship like Enterprise or Voyager. An amazing CD from an amazing artist who will always remain my #1 favorite of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!! Jonn's back to his 'Space' music!!.......2004-02-19

In the tradition of Planetary Chronicles and 'And The Stars Go With You' this CD lets you imagine a journey through space, etc. Yeah - this CD sounds a lot like Planetary Chronicles - SO WHAT? Planetary Chronicles I & II are some of the best work. I was a little put off when Serrie branched off into the tribal sounds of Spirit Keepers and all the lovey crap in Midsummers Century and Ixlandia. However, even those 2 CD's were pretty good. Don't listen to the other review about this CD not breaking any new ground and that this CD sounds like his others. It's SPACE MUSIC - how much NEW ground can you really break in this genre?? The music either sounds all spacey and junk or it doesn't. Bottom line if you LIKE Jonn Serrie's previous "space" music then you will LOVE this CD.

Album Description

Summer 2002 ushers in the debut release by stateside guitar atmospherists Stella Luna. The 4 song EP will be a precursor to their full-length follow up later this year. Our outer space explorers completed the project at Retrophonic Studios with 35 year recording veteran Jim Devito. The EP was recorded entirely analog to tape through all vintage recording equipment, using only tube gear, tube mics, and vintage amplifiers to achieve a very big - warm expanse of sound. A non-stop voyage from the shattering opener "Change" and intensely cinematic "Stargazer" to the swirling, organ-like Leslie guitar tones of the sci-fi "Antares" and the climaxing album closer - "A Bridge to Nowhere". The sounds heard on the Stargazer EP via understated drums, percolating analog synths, wildly-effected guitars and the layered vocal bliss of Hanson and Smith all combine to create a feel for the future, one of space, and of beauty... a true listening experience.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful. Just... beautiful........2003-04-30

Holy moley. With only four songs, Stella Luna have created one of the towering works of shoegaze and dreampop. Each piece washes over the listener in great shimmering waves of echo and delay, revealing a depth and precision of execution that instantly stands with the best of Slowdive (think Just For A Day), Ride (Nowhere) and Adorable (Against Perfection). It's heady territory for any band's debut EP, and I can only hope their forthcoming full-length (due summer 2003? winter 2003? ever?) gives us more of the same. But even if they've already achieved their high-water mark... man, what a mark it is.

    4 out of 5 stars Great CD!!!.......2000-10-02

I got an upfront look at Deepsky on Cyberfest2000 this year in Melbourne, Florida, after that I was compeled to purchase this CD and is great!!!!! If you enjoy electronic music you should definitely add this one to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Techno with hint of Trance = A fantastic CD.......2000-06-14

This is by far my favorite cd. This is a must have cd for anyone that likes dance music in general. This alblum is so good because its techno/trance but it doesn't get to caught up in the super trippy trance sound...Its hard hitting techno (and break beats) with that hint of a light, trance-like efect that comes together to make some of the the best dance music I've ever heard....You just have to listen to it, you'll be amazed. Be sure to check out Track 2 "Cosmic Dancer".

4 out of 5 stars Keep an eye out for these guys...........2000-03-13

I found Deepsky on the internet and heard some of their stuff. I was pretty impressed as Stargazer is extremely catchy. Track 2 "Cosmic Dancer" is also pretty good with its worldy sound. This Cd is definately worth it and will stay in your tray for a while. Look for their Phuture 2000 remix!

5 out of 5 stars Massive 4x4 trancebeats and breaks.......1999-12-10

I first heard Stargazer when it was out on vinyl, and instantly fell in love with it. It just feels incredibly tribalistic, until the part of the song which really feels like youre travelling through the stars. And then when you just don't think it can get any better, it takes off, and goes through the roof. The remixes are OK, but not as good as the original.

Another tip for buying this CD is the "Cosmic dancer" track, It was a surprise to me since I had never heard it before, but this might be one of the best songs I've heard ever. Religous trance is the best I can describe it with, which lifts you off the ground and sends you flying...

4 out of 5 stars Trance with melody.......1999-11-30

The original songs are each over 6 minutes long, but because of the melody & the arrangement it doesn't seem that way... The remixes get kind of boring after hearing "Stargazer" 3 times remixed.. it begins to get to you... I can't wait for their complete album release sometime next year(2000). I pop this cd in when I lift weights.. the thumpy music keeps you going!

5 out of 5 stars Right on the money!.......2002-02-20

This is another great Dave Douglas album. Three of the songs Four Sleepers, Diana, and Pug Nose were written buy Wayne Shorter and the rest by Dave Douglas. This album is a tribute to Wayne Shorter, and his compositional spirit. I'm sure he is pleased to have such a fine set of tunes composed for him and dedicated to him. The playing is top notch. I love Joey Baron provides the steady beat and everyone has plenty of solo time. Standouts for me on this album included Dave Douglas (of course) and also Joshua Roseman, trombone who talks an awesome solo on Gold Fish. This album is very recommended to all Dave Douglas fans and other general jazz fans!

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent recording by Dave Douglas.......2001-01-05

The follow-up recording to "In Our Lifetime" (a tribute to Booker Little), "Stargazer" is a tribute to saxophonist Wayne Shorter. I'm not familar enough with Wayne Shorter's solo work (previously he was with the great Miles Davis Quintet) to gauge how the Douglas-penned compositions touch on Shorter's compositional and performance styles. I do know that Douglas' compositions here are as strong as any of his other works and he has assembled a great band to perform them. Highly recommended.

Dave Douglas - trumpet, Chris Speed - tenor sax & clarinet, Josh Roseman - trombone, Uri Caine - piano, James Genus - bass, Joey Baron - drums.

5 out of 5 stars Too little reminds of Wayne Shorter........2000-12-19

The obvious next choice when Soul on Soul does not disappoint. Liking a lot of the records of Wayne Shorter, to whose music Stargazer is an approach, I found Dave Douglas' interpretations not as stringent as on his Soul on Soul, because very little actually reminded of Wayne Shorter's music. On the other side Soul on Soul is all Mary Lou Williams. It is dawning on me why Dave Douglas is such a special musician. Without being able to explain this sentence: he adds an additional dimension to music, just like John Coltrane with A Love Supreme. You can't hear enough of Douglas' music.

5 out of 5 stars this is it!.......2000-04-30

This is THE dave douglas recording. On this great disc Dave shows his enormous skills on trumpet and as a composer. For me personaly as a big Douglas fan it's one of his most exciting recordings. THE recording of dave you must have from his sextet because his other groups are even good but it's quite different. What makes this recording so special? the exciting and perfectionated sound of the group, dave's personal trumpet sound and skills, the great original compositions, etc.... i could go on for long but what really makes it so special is that feeling you get when hearing the disk play and that feeling will increase the more you play the disc. how more you'll play it how more you'll love it and become a Douglas fan.

4 out of 5 stars A Tribute to Wayne Shorter.......2000-01-06

Douglas' sextet pays tribute to wayne shoter with three shorter tunes and Douglas originals. NOt quite on the level of In Our Lifetime, but if you like Douglas you will want this one (and all of his others)!

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation.......2005-12-28

It may seem like "local bias" because I am from the Philly metro area, but this is the best sampler compilation I've heard in quite a while. Produced by Philadelphia's WXPN-FM, one of the best adult alternative stations in the country (and home of World Cafe), it's a very tasty cross-section of local talent - the performances are first-rate across the board, ranging from straight-ahead pop-rock to soul to folk, and more. The most high-profile name here is probably Amos Lee, whose debut album has met with accolades nationwide. You may recognize other singer-songwriters here as well, like John Flynn, Ben Arnold, Jim Boggia and Grey Eye Glances. (And if you're not familiar with them, this is a great place to start.) There are also very catchy numbers from lesser-knowns like Townhall, Mutlu and Mojo Stu. Proceeds from the CD also benefit "Musicians on Call", a worthy cause in which participating musicians bring live music to hospital patients in the area. So if you like World-Cafe style musical programming, you will really enjoy this CD.
