5 out of 5 stars Rich and Jacquie at Their Best.......2003-11-27

The Kerrville Folk festival has an annual songwriting contest. It's one of the better known and prestigious awards. Two of the songs on this album finished first and second in 1998. Small Potatoes, and this album in particular, is that good.

I first heard "1000 Candles, 1000 Cranes" when Rich and Jacquie sang it in my living room. They brought tears to my eyes. It's not exactly an anti-war song; it's a lament for the consequences of war, and offers a glimpse of reconciliation that is deeply moving. In just a few words, it acknolwedges and accepts some of the worst and best of what makes us human. The song took second place.

By contrast, the title track is an utterly charming waltz, sung in a kind of dysfunctional counterpoint that dances around itself. The painfully shy couple of the song (and on the cover) unknowingly reflect each other's thoughts until, against the odds, they are dancing in step. The lyrics are simply perfect. The song took first place.

Small Potatoes is a delightful live act, polished but still personal, and have an easy rapport with their audience. See them live if you can. And enjoy this album. Pop music doesn't have to be as vacuous or vicious as 90% of what's broadcast. Listen to this album and you'll see that I'm right.

5 out of 5 stars Charming, profound, and very BIG!.......2001-03-08

I had the pleasure of hearing Small Potatoes perform with folk-singer great Tom Paxton. I immediately purchased this disc after the performance, because I was so struck with this duet's versatility, humor, and profundity. This particular disc has songs that range from diabolically humorous "Waltz of the Wallflowers" -- pay attention to the very small parts) to the moving and bittersweet "1000 Candles, 1000 Cranes." The latter song covers the bitterness of a U.S. mom who lost sons in World War II, and then melds into her eventually meeting a Japanese mom who lost a daughter to the atomic bomb. It is one of the most beautifully performed songs of reconciliation that I have heard in a long time!

The vocals are great here -- there's good down to earth folk singing, but some really inspired "do-owp-a-do" improvisation, and a rip-roaring rendition of Celtic gibberish that, while still gibberish, sounds just gorgeous. On stage, these performers had a lot of fun, in spite of their occasional serious songs, and it comes through on this disc. This is great listenting for those car drives through annoying traffic congestion -- just putting a whole new attitude in your mind. The recording quality here is very good, with clear sharp sounds (as in hearing the little slide on the guitar string after it has been plucked). I wish this couple all the best in their musical careers, there is nothing "small" about their music!

5 out of 5 stars Small Potatoes?? I think they're Big Potatoes!.......2000-12-25

Small Potatoes is (are?) fabulous. They are both incredibly talented. Jacquie's voice is a God-given gift and Rich is one of those rare musicians who can get emotion out of six guitar strings. If you listen to their CDs and especially if you seee them in person (DO IT!) you will probably need a tissue to wipe away the tears that come from the emotional impact they make on you or from laughing at some of their funny stuff. The rest of their music is merely incredibly wonderful.

Having met them, I can say they are incredibly good at making music, they're very entertaining and they are really nice people.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the title piece.......2000-10-20

While the title song for this album is a Kerrville Songwriting Contest winner and absolutely awesome, one should not overlook the other great songs on this album. Waltz of the Wallflowers was written by Jacquie (half of this duet) and did take 1st at Kerrville, but 1000 Candles, 1000 Cranes was written by Rich (the other half of the duet) and came in second during the same competition. It says a lot that both halves of this duet beat all of the competition in the songwriters' competition at Kerrville. If you have money for only one new CD, make it this one.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD by two talented artists.......2000-07-07

I bought this CD after watching this couple perform in a church parish hall. They were wonderful. "Waltz of the Wallflowers" is a true-to-life rendition of the angst of adolescence. The performance itself is a waltz also as the two performers are each singing his/her own wallflower song. The results are amazing. Other songs on the CD are either quite touching or amusing.

When Rich Prezioso {cq} and Jacquie {cq} Manning named their folk duo Small Potatoes, the Illinois singer-guitarists no doubt meant to be ironic. Nonetheless, the name proves an all too accurate description of the pair's debut CD, "Time Flies," which presents their modest voices and competent picking on moderately amusing tunes that reflect a mildly adventurous eclecticism. Small potatoes indeed. There's plenty of singer-songwriter folk, ranging from Prezioso's pedestrian observations on aging and mortality (the title tune and "I Will Pass This Way Again"), to superb songs by Ewan MacColl and Michael Smith. Prezioso and Manning turn in respectable efforts on all these genres, but excel at none of them. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Who the hell is Geoffrey Himes ?.......2003-09-07

Small Potatoes is one of the most exciting acts I have ever seen. Rich's guitar work (including bottle neck slide style) is incredible. Jacquie's vocals are wonderful and their writing creative and extemely entertaining. The "Waltz of the Wallfowers" CD reflects all of this. If they do such a poor job with Michael Smith's songs, then why does he consistantly share the stage with them and praise them? Find a different line of work Geoffrey!

5 out of 5 stars Hearing is Believing.......2001-12-27

The following is an excerpt from a review I wrote after seeing Small Potatoes in concert for a folk/acoustic music society for which I am a co-founder I, too, don't understand the Himes review because I find what Rich and Jacquie are able to do is exactly what he accuses them of not being able to do. They are superb songwriters and excellent musicians and...they also generate an incredible musical energy onstage. Anyways...

"Hearing is Believing" is a pretty good name for this column (even if I do say so myself), but you also had to see this concert to believe it! Over 200 people packed the Arts Center for this show. It was amazingly gratifying for the FAMA Board!

Facing FAMA's first sold-out crowd, Small Potatoes didn't disappoint a soul. Opening with an instrumental that led into "Talk A Little Texan to Me" featured Rich on the first of many jaw-dropping solos of the night. He makes it look so easy, but we all know the truth. Jacquie's rich voice and rhythm guitar compliments Rich's hot guitar playing perfectly.

Rich and Jacquie's show featured most of the songs off their Time Flies CD and reflected their diverse tastes. They played swing. They played some traditional folk (including an exquisite version of "Shenandoah"). They played a Celtic medley. And all featured tight harmonies and incredible soloing......

The large crowd really enjoyed themselves singing along on "Turn Your Radio On" and Rich's "I Will Pass This Way Again" and by giving rousing ovations to many of the songs throughout the night.

The show ended after an extended standing ovation and encore. Wow! What a night!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2001-03-22

As a co-director of the Lake County (IL) Folk Festival, I listen to ALOT of folk music, and this duo is my hands-down favorite. I don't want to repeat what has been so well said by previous reviewers... so suffice it to say that if I were stranded on a desert island and could only take one CD it would be this one. (Then I'd have to find a way to sneak "Waltz of the Wallflowers" in too.) Buy these CDs -- you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Mister Himes needs to find a new occupation!.......2001-02-17

I agree with the previous reviewer. Himes either doesn't know anything about music (which he is apparently paid to write about) or he woke up on the really wrong side of the bed the day that he wrote that review.

I don't know what prompted that mean-spirited review. I know a bunch of people that are performers and/or students of folk and acoustic music and they are all blown away by Small Potatoes. The versatility and talent in their songwriting and singing along with Jaquie's incredible voice and Rich's wizardry on the guitar make them a delight to hear. Their personalities also make them a delight to meet. I have done so twice and I will have the good fortune to see and meet them a third time when they perform in Madison, Wisconsin about a month from now.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Music Lovers Review.......2000-03-27

After reading the putdown review of the Amazon reviewer I felt it necessary to respond. I absolutely love the album and the group Small Potatoes. Unique, refreshing and a huge croud favorite at the music festivals. They stretch the envelope in the variety and depth of music that they perform. Their songwriting and stylings differentiate them from the pablum that Geoffrey seemingly craves. It is instantly apparent from listening to their album and reading his reviews that they are not only better at what they do, but are less impressed with themselves. The new CD, Waltz of the Wallflowers has some real gems also. Highly recommend both. Listen and decide for yourselves.
