Rennaissance music at it's finest!.......2007-06-29
This was my first Renaissance music album and the broad styles of several composers were very well represented, especially Michael Pretorius, probably the most well-known composer of his time. The tonal quality sparkles and the latin language comes alive (along with English translation in the included booklet); be prepared for an aural "feast" of some of the more eclectic music from the Renaissance period!
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-04
To quote from the accompanying booklet seems to be in order to start this review: "This collection attempts to wipe the dust from some old ideas and restore music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance to its roots deep in the human soul.........What you're listening to on this disc is not the domain of museums, but the music of the people, born of faith and the love of song and dance".
This is a varied group of works, some dances, some strictly instrumental and some accompanied vocal.
The role of dancing, as you might suspect, was enormously important in this era. 'Le Bouree' showcases the dance music of the composer Michael Praetorius. The 'Bransles de Villages' is of French origin and features 2 violins, 2 violas, a cello, a great bass viol, hurdy-gurdy and 2 lutes. 'La scesa de Pastori dal Monte' is an Italian dance by Andrea Ansalone. Another dance written by Michael Praetorious was the 'Volte' which actually involved 4 short dances. It was considered not respectable because of the close contact between the dancers.
The strictly instrumental songs are : 'Dum pater familias' is called a pilgrim song, and it was religious in nature. And, of course, all the dance songs are instrumental.
The vocally oriented songs are: 'Quen a Virgin ben servira' is a song taken from a collection of songs about the miracles attributed to the Virgin Mary.-Three of the songs are from the famous 'Carmina Burana' manuscript.- 'Orientis partibus' is from the 'Feast of fools'which was a feast held by the church itself in which the status of the church herarchy was reversed as inferior clergy assumed the role of their superiors.-'Stella Splendours' is another pilgrim song; this song was sung by pilgrims who went to worship as the Shrine of the Virgin at Montserrat.
I always trust the quality of a CD when Philip Pickett and the New London Consort are involved. This album is very interesting, but I would hope that this would be classified as the more "pop" type music of the period. Also, I don't think that I personally would call it early music, as is indicated in the accompanying booklet. Today that term brings to mind Monteverdi, Cavalli, Palestrina, the Scarlatti's, up to and including Handel and Bach etc.. Just a personal reaction on my part. This is a very well put together disc.
A good sampler of New London Consort's work.......2006-12-20
Although there's nothing special about this disc as a compilation, it does provide a value-priced sampling of 17 tracks from the New London Consort's excellent recorded work. Given that so many of their recordings are difficult to find on CD at a reasonable price, and that one of my personal favorites ("Bache bene venies", from their masterful 4-CD recording of the Carmina Burana) is included here, I'd recommend this CD as a great place to start while you search for the original releases.
Excellent renditions of lively 'old music'........2005-11-23
'Sinners & Saints' by Philip Pickett and the New London Consort is just a bit too ambitious with their subtitle, 'The Ultimate Medieval and Renaissance Music Collection' as I find it hard to believe that 70 minutes can be the ultimate anything on 500 years of history. This is especially true since they seem to focus a lot more on the sinners than the saints, as there is virtually no liturgical music here. But, since there are so many good recordings of medieval liturgies, we aren't missing much.
This is really the sort of thing you would expect to hear from a travelling troupe of minstrals, but not from a solo artist, as practically every performance involves several instruments and voices.
Some tracks will sound especially familiar, as they are very similar to Carl Orff's 'Carmina Burana', inspired by medieval texts.
Compared to many recordings of music from Shakespeare's time, this collection is superior and well worth the investment.
A Treasure of the Time Period.......2005-08-11
I bought this CD with a children's history class in mind. We are studying the Dark Ages to the Rennaisance. I was delighted to hear the variety of selections which span the spectrum of genres during this period of history. My children and I have been listening to it in the car as well as at home for the simple enjoyment of the music. It will be exciting to present these pieces to my class as I feel it is a very accurate display of the cultures, instrumentation, languages, and styles of the Middle Ages. I am a proffesional musician and thoroughly enjoy most types of music so it wasn't hard to get me interested but I was surprised to hear my eight-year-old and five-year-old sons asking to hear this CD. The former child said it made him feel "important" to listen!!

One of the richest sources of medieval music is the 13th-century Spanish collection of songs known as the Cantigas de Santa Maria (Songs of Holy Mary). Compiled by King Alfonso X, these songs represent a fascinating variety of nonliturgical tunes and poems that tell us a great deal about life in the Middle Ages. Most of the songs express love, reverence, and praise for the Virgin Mary and include stories of miracles she performed. Reflecting the popular traditions of the French troubadours, the melodies are expressive, lyrical, and easily singable, and often show a lively rhythmic structure. Other tunes are more improvisatory in nature. The members of Sonus are expert musicians who give each song its own flavor by appropriate choice of voice and instruments, which includes soprano voice, recorder, shawm, harp, chitarra, oud, and a variety of percussion. The very attractive program also includes poetry and songs from another collection, Cantigas de amigo, and a lovely piece from the famous convent at Las Huelgas. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Medieval Spanish music shines.......2001-10-10
I am currently enrolled in a medieval/Renaissance Spanish literature class and have just attended a lecture about pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela. This music was used as a soundtrack and immediately captured my attention with its striking combination of recorder, hurdy gurdy, harp and vocals, as well as the fact that it is based on various cantigas de amigo and was penned by Alfonso X el Sabio. It reinforces what we have covered in class by setting the texts to lively, rhythmical melodies that show both French and Arabic influences.
This CD is a fascinating overview of medieval Spanish Mariano religious texts and poetry and songs performed capably by Sonus. The tunes are by turns danceable and a touch melancholy in places, and the instruments and voices are a perfect match for each other. "Echoes of Spain" proved a very melodious introduction to medieval Spanish music and I recommend it to all early music fans.
Beautiful........1999-05-10
This music is beautiful and expressive. Words cannot describe such pure sound.

superb early music.......2006-06-30
This has been one of my favorite albums since I discovered it, over ten years ago - deeply moving emotionally, and also exciting, invigorating and eye-opening musically, at least for me. I'd never heard music like this, and it changed my ideas and interests regarding 'classical' music.
It should also be of interest to fans of things medieval and of fantasy literature, since this is truly what music sounded like back then I think.
Another reviewer mentioned 'Carmina Burana' - Carl Orff's work is of course not part of this album, but I suppose Orff may have been influenced by this kind of music.
The info on Amazon is woefully muddled. The performer for this album should be Ensemble Alcatraz, and a search under that name should find by this album and Danse Royale credited to them.
Good, but not as good as Danse Royale.......2005-09-05
These performances of Carmina Burana have plenty of gusto and technical brilliance as you'd expect from this professional ensemble. The instrumentals are generally more interesting than the vocals, with some well thought out arrangements. Even so there is an invariably stringent sound that makes the album hard to listen to in one go, not helped by a recording that is a little recessed and on the cool side. Their earlier and very fine Danse Royale is more interesting, and I prefer Australia's Renaissance Players with Winsome Evans on the Carmina Burana.
I don't care what anyone says.........2003-12-11
...this is a fantastic album! I am no "Early music" connaisseur, but this album is the best I've bought in years...It makes me melt. I love the hint of moorishness and the surprisingly rhythmic 6/8's with soulfully rendered vocals...Hmmmm...nice...
Pretty good rendition of the Cantigas.......2003-10-21
This is a pretty sparse rendition of some of the Cantigas, one of the more no-frills performances I have heard. It is superbly performed, make no mistake about it, but it is something of an acquired taste. This album lacks the rich textures found in "Danse Royale," Ensemble Alcatraz' subsequent album.
This is a good album, but because of my personal tastes, it stays on the shelf more than other early music CDs I own. It is strictly a matter of personal taste, so I encourage you to see if this CD appeals to your tastes.
Passionate, exciting, and superbly performed.......1998-09-15
I've been an "early music" fan ever since the 1960's, when I chanced upon an album of recorder music by the Kranis Consort (an offshoot of the New York Pro Musica). Few recordings since then have excited me as much, with the exception of David Munrow and some of the Clemencic Consort's work. So I was delighted to discover this album: not only are all the performers superb musicians (many of them well-known in the San Francisco Bay Area early music scene), but their performances are imaginative, passionate, and lively while remaining true to the music's medieval roots. A pleasure to listen to all the way through, and heartily recommended.

Andean/Caribbean Beats.......2004-11-17
Konrad Rhee's BLUE SEA DREAMS uses guest percussionist Brent Lewis (of Australian fame) to blend Native American influences from the USA with the sounds of both Andes and Caribbean beats to create a truly world music feel.
Within the same song you'll hear essences of the American Southwest, Pacific Northwest, Caribbean, and even African instrumentation: all blend together, held by a subtle yet unifying percussive beat, to create a melodic, rich atmosphere reminiscent of soft rock and new age.

SEMI-SEPHARDIC HEAVEN.......2007-02-15
This record is new to me, as is most music of this type, from this era. I've a taste for middle-eastern music, both Islamic and otherwise -- including Hindu -- and am wild about most Hungarian and Slavic music. The frankly Sephardic music I've heard I find rapturous and profoundly satisfying. This music of EL SABIO fits into that category, easily, and the musicality of the performers is distinctive in the best way.
A new favorite has appeared on my shelves.
Brilliant.......2006-08-02
This compilation is dedicated to the works and compositions of Alfonso X, 13th century King of Castile and Leon, and a Renaissance man long before the concept of Renaissance had even been conceived. Alfonso was responsible for a tremendous period of advancement in learning in medieval Europe, and was a remarkable scholar and composer in his own right. At a time when the Bishop of Paris enjoyed a library of only four volumes, Alfonso had sponsored a library in Castile with over 30,000, collecting the works Christians, Muslims and Jews into one massive complex devoted to learning and freedom of thought. In this latter vein, Alfonso was also a competent astrologer, and, some say, adept of the esoteric Art. Irrespective of this, he was ill favored by the Church, predominantly due to his tolerance of the Muslims and Jews, with whom the Christian residents of Castile lived in harmony in contrast to the balance of the known world of the day.
DuFay Collective are, in a word, brilliant, basically the Pink Martini of the music of the period. Their music never fails to transport you back in time. In this collaboration with the 13th century Castilian King, they have produced a phenomenal, almost mystical album, whose compositions are highly reminiscent of those of Hildegard von Bingen, and the evocative and mystical harmony of the album Diadema, by Vox.
Of all of the works by DuFay to date, this is, by far, my favorite. It takes the mind and soul to other places. It is truly a masterpiece, and a collaborative effort across 700 years between an enlightened King at the end of the Dark Ages, and master performers of medieval music in modern times.
