"How about a bad title?" wonders Spencer Kayden's Little Sally in "Too Much Exposition." "That could kill a show pretty good." It's a tribute to the skill deployed by the Urinetown creative team (Mark Hollman, music and lyrics; Greg Kotis, book and lyrics) that its title doesn't kill the show. Set in a near-future in which water depletion has led to a ban on private toilets, this may be the only musical in history in which one of the leads makes a fortune on pee. But the show (which originated Off-Broadway before graduating to the big league) limits its subversive intent to subject matter and is refreshingly classic in approach and structure--think Weill-meets-Lewis Carroll. Backed by a small ensemble, the cast (with John Cullum in a turn nothing short of brilliant as the evil urinal magnate) has a field day with Kotis and Hollman's frequently hilarious score. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

not funny.......2007-07-25

I'd heard such rave reviews about this musical, but kept passing on chances to see it. I was turned off by the title -- and this is strange for me, a person not afraid of scatological humor. But maybe I knew something I could not say.

The funniest thing about the musical, I am now convinced, is the premise. Urinetown is a place where you have to pay to pee. A conglomerate has taken over all toilet facilities, and if you don't pay, you don't pee -- unless you go into the bushes, and risk getting arrested.

But it's just not funny. It's supposed to be a satire, but it just doesn't work. Why? I don't know. But I listened to many songs on the CD, and none of them had that true spark that makes you want to laugh. The opening number is "Too Much Exposition" making fun of musicals that open by explaining too much with words instead of action. And perhaps this song is in there to deflect criticism for the main reason this musical doesn't work -- it's too busy explaining, instead of getting on with the business of being funny.

My humor tastes: I watch the Daily Show, Colbert Report, South Park, Dave Chappelle, Dane Cook (so-so), Frasier reruns. Never watched Friends, or Everybody Loves Raymond, or Family Guy, but did watch Seinfeld (although it's not funny to me anymore). The two most recent things I saw that made me laugh out loud were 1) Larry Wilmore doing his n*gg*r skit on Daily Show and 2)an early Chappelle episode where Sesame Street characters talk about drug use

An Amazing Find.......2007-04-03

I just recently discovered this gem of a musical. It's a stand out show with a unique touch. If heard a few outside musicals (The Rocky Horror Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch...) but this one stands out from them. The music is amazing, the lyrics are creative, and the humor is ripe.

With a chamber music-esque overture, the tone is set. 'Too Much Exposition' is a great introduction to Urinetown (the musical). Officer Lockstock addresses the audience about what they should expect from the show. Little Sally wants to let the audience in on the water shortage but Lockstock stops her. ("You're too young to understand it now, but nothing can kill a show like too much exposition." "How 'bout bad subject matter? Or a bad title, even? That could kill a show pretty good.")

I've read what others have written: you don't get the whole humor of the show unless you've seen it. I haven't seen it, but this recording is enough to get me see it. (That is, if a production nearby, even a high school production, is put on.)

Not for Everyone.......2006-12-28

This musical is a great piece for the 21st century no doubt, that being said it takes some getting used to. The musical cannot be taken at face value, there are lots of things happening under the surface and it takes some bites at things musical theater doesn't usually take, like itself. On the surface it is strange, and not really something people would listen to over and over. However, once you figure it out, it's fun to listen to it again to find all the things that are really going on. It is very funny, and says some good things about the current state of the world. For musical theater fans this is questionable, if you just like the toe-tapping happy go lucky feel, this isn't it. But if you like the social commentary that goes along with that toe tapping, this is a must. NOT FOR FIRST TIME BROADWAY LISTNERS. Favorite Song: "Look at the Sky"

"DON'T BE THE BUNNY!".......2006-12-04

My son, a high school senior, told me his first show of this year's theatrical season was going to be "Urinetown". My response was something like ... No, really, what shows are you doing this year? Then he brought home a recording of it, and I was hooked right away by the lyrics. Over the years my son has been involved in many performances, but he and the rest of the cast had a real blast preparing for, and performing, this show! He wanted Lockstock, but was cast as Cladwell ... Owned it ... Loved it!
I am no Broadway expert by any stretch of the definition, but this show is wonderfully entertaining! You will see (and hear) snippets from other shows, you will pick up on some of even the more subtle stabs at musicals as a whole, you will groan, you will laugh and you will enjoy ... But only if you try not to take it too seriously.
Get past the title (in this case I certainly think it did not "...kill a show pretty good"), relax, and be entertained. And for goodness sake, if you have a chance to see it performed live, do so! A musical that pokes fun at itself? Yes, a refreshing departure from the norm, and worth the price of admission.

This soundtrack offers a pretty standard mix of new songs, old chestnuts, and excerpts from the score (here by John Debney). On the new tip, Joss Stone and Patti LaBelle engage in an overheated battle of the divas on CD opener "Stir It Up," a bouncy piece of fluff that sounds more like Aretha Franklin circa "Freeway of Love" than classic soul. Other originals include Barenaked Ladies' "One Little Slip" (this movie's answer to Counting Crows' "Accidentally in Love" from Shrek 2) and the Cheetah Girls' peppy-but-bland cover of "Shake Your Tail Feather." But the real highlights are the songs performed by the movie's vocal cast, which includes Joan Cusack, Garry Marshall, Zach Braff, Steve Zahn, and Amy Sedaris. Their group cover of Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Don¹t Go Breaking My Heart," for instance, sounds as if half of them were drunk in the recording studio (and this is meant as a compliment.) Braff's a cappella version of "We Are the Champions" is smashing and Cusack and Zahn's take on the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" is completely demented. My husband bought the Chicken Little movie for our 3 year old (mostly to get us OFF the Cars movie that we all have memorized) and he fell in love with it! He likes to act out the scenes and loves the music. He loves this CD at night when he's going to bed. We all have to dance to One Little Slip (he knows all the words) and then we have to "shake our tail feathers" before he jumps in bed every night! I enjoy the cd too, so it's good for everyone!

My son loved the movie Chicken Little, so we decided to purchase this for him to listen to on his discman. He loves the soundtrack as much as the movie, which made it an awesome investment(especially since the soundtrack has many good singers that aren't too hard on the ears for the adult crowdes either). My son was very happy with this item, and so was I.

I bought the CD to accompany the movie. My four year old watches the movie everyday. When I gave her the CD, after listening to it nightly, she takes it to bed with her everynight where I have to pry it out of her hands after she falls off to sleep. I don't get it, but she does...so it's worth what I paid for it.

Chess is a musical that sounds like it shouldn't work but instead succeeds surprisingly well. This is the original concept album that was recorded before the musical was staged in London. Chess is the story of a love triangle told against the backdrop of an international chess tournament during the height of the cold war. The composers are Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (the Bs in ABBA) and the lyrics are by Tim Rice, who supplied the words for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, as well as Disney's Aladdin (with Howard Ashman), The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast. The six-member cast does a beautiful job with the songs, which are a combination of ballads, rock, and operatic choruses. Murray Head's version of "One Night in Bangkok" became a surprise hit in the mid-'80s and it still turns up on the turntables in dance clubs around the world. --Michael Simmons

And on that basis alone, you've got to cut it some slack. Fortunately, not all that much slack turns out to be necessary.

While "Chess" may be a document of an era that no longer exists, there's a lot more going on than the surface metaphor. It holds up very well indeed. When it aims for humor, it generally succeeds, and likewise when it aims to devastate. What more can you ask for?

A GREAT AND OFTEN OVERLOOKED MUSICAL FROM THE 80-IS.......2007-03-04

`Chess' is a musical that should be counted among the best of what the 1980-is had produced: side by side with `Cats', `The Phantom of the Opera', `Les Miserables' or `Miss Saigon'. The score as heard on this concept album, written by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (formerly of ABBA) and with the exceptional lyrics written by Tim Rice, stand proof to this. And yet, due to various reasons, like the changing of the director half way through London staging; a heavy rewrite for Broadway and a pan review from Frank Ritch (a.k.a. `The Butcher of Broadway'), `Chess' seems to be unjustly neglected.

This concept album is the main reason why the show has so many ardent fans until this day. Tim Rice wanted to write the show with the main plot revolving around chess for years and after his long time partner Andrew Lloyd Webber remained uninterested, he found the new collaborators in Ulvaeus and Andersson. The subject matter follows two international chess players in a championship, a Russian (Tommy Körberg) and an American (Murray Head) and a woman called Florence (Elaine Paige) who is a manager to the American but falls in love with the Russian. The story also draws a parallel between the game of chess and the cold war/real life situations.

This concept album was recorded in 1984, two years before the original London production took place. As the authors noted in the accompanying booklet, it was a work in progress and thusly the story is not quite readable here from the musical numbers alone. Despite that fact (which is amended by the synopsis included in the booklet), this album remains a winner. The score (played here by the London Symphonic Orchestra) itself makes an intriguing bland of the famous ABBA sound, the classical; the rock and the pop enhanced by the orchestral solo passages and the strong choral parts. The lush orchestrations add an epic touch to it and on the whole it is melodic and hummable, packed with great tunes. Some of the songs achieved huge success outside the musical: `I know him so well', a duet between Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson, held the number one spot on the UK singles charts for 4 weeks in February 1985 and won Ivor Novello Award as the Best Selling Single; Murray Head's `One night in Bangkok' became one of the biggest dance hits of its time, often heard today. Some other notable tunes include `The Anthem' (Russian's deliberation on his homeland); the soaring rock songs `Where I want to be' and `Pity the child' (in the former, the Russian reflects upon his life under the spotlight; in the latter, the American ponders about his own unhappy childhood) or the gentle `Heaven help my heart' (in which Florence weighs up her relationship with the Russian).

A special reference must be made to Tim Rice's excellent lyrics. With `Chess' he managed to keep up to the high standards he set himself in `Jesus Christ Superstar' and Evita'. Again in this case he shows he is a lyrical wizard, with his familiar cynical touch. `The story of chess', in which he gives a history of the game in a couple of crafty verses, is a pure masterpiece. The same can be said of the song `I know him so well', where the two women reexamine their relationship with the same man. As a whole, `Chess' owes a lot of its appeal to Tim Rice's written word.

The cast on this album ranks the high standard of the material. The principal parts (sung by Elaine Paige, Tommy Körberg and Murray Head) are delivered in a strong and impeccable fashion.

This 2-disc edition comes with a booklet containing a note from the authors, a text about chess, a full synopsis and a libretto, together with the photos of the principal singers.

Anyone interested in the modern musical theatre should find `Chess' to be a great score with great lyrics, which should be enough to satisfy any aficionado.

I love "Chess"! I still remember the first time I heard the single "One Night in Bangkok" on my car radio. I thought it was so unusual and so very cool, so I tracked down the album and bought it. Then I taped it onto a cassette, which is what I've been listening to for years, so I finally broke down and got it on CD. Of course, it's on my iPod now. I've seen the musical, and I loved that, too.

I love this show! That said, I do not care for this version of it. The inclusion of the word "concept" in the title means it is just that. This was, thankfully, not the final version of the show that would later spawn the hit song, "One Night In Bangkok".

With most Broadway musicals, the musical numbers tell the basic story of the show. If you listen to the recordings of Phantom, Mama Mia, Beauty and the Beast, you can discern the basic storyline of the show. Listening to this particular recording of Chess, though, will leave you wondering "What was that?" The Broadway arrival of Chess saw a much needed reworking of the storyline and arrangement of the musical numbers. This recording seems too much like a mish-mash of songs that don't really relate to each other.

For musical fanatics (like myself), I say "yes, you should have this recording in your collection", if only to understand how much work went into the show before it opened on Broadway.

If you are only buying the album because of "One Night In Bangkok", purchase the Broadway recording instead; you'll be much happier with the performance by Phillip Casnoff rather than Murray Head.

Wonderful!!!.......2007-05-14

I bought this for my husband but fell in love with it myself. I had never heard of it but now consider Edvard Grieg my favorite composer. It is magnificent.

Relaxes your mind........2005-12-30

The peer gynt suite is very delicate and it relaxes me. Whenever I hear the first movement of Peer Gynt, I feel as if I am walking along the forest at dawn with sunshine passing through the tall trees. It calms me and I usually close my eyes to imagine Grieg's creative masterpiece. What also interests me the fourth movement. It starts with slow and quiet and then slowly the music accelerates with power. Like the title, "Mountain King," says itself, you can feel the grandness of the music toward the end.

The piano concerto in a minor is my favorite. This music seem to convey the full spectrum from quiet and delicate or gracious feel of music to more powerful and magnificent all proportionally adequately. It is very enjoyable. Whenever I listen to this music, I feel as if I am resting in the high mountainn looking at the full panorama. Anyway, that's just my imagination I feel from his music and of course, yours can be very different from mine.

As for the CD quality, I hear no distraction sound and it is recorded well, I think. The little cover booklet can be informative about Grieg. Also nice price from Amazon.

Relaxing music from a great composer.......2005-08-02

I absolutely loved the string music on Track 3. I remembered it from an old PC RPG called Quest for Glory IV. I was disappointed to find out that Track 4 was only a minute and a half long, because I grew up loving that song from the various places I heard it (Fantasia and a kid Detective PC game from the late 80's).
Overall, though, Grieg's greatest hits is a must-have for collectors of classical music. Grieg is revered as Norway's greatest composer of all time and he certainly has a knack for creating imagery of bustling fjords and majestic mountainsides with interlaced river ravines.

Better than just an introduction.......2004-04-28

This CD goes beyond just introducing Grieg. It is a truly beautiful and for me, invaluable collection of this excellent composer. Grieg had an inimitable gift for exploring emotion, often sadness and nostalgia. However, he also had a large touch of the virtuoso, as demonstrated by the famous Piano Concerto. True, the last 2 movements are not included here; however, the first is still stunning. The Peer Gynt Suites are wonderfully played, and Ase's Death and Heartwounds are especially noteworthy - the lush orchestral sounds of these gorgeous pieces unfold exquisitely. Homage March is a nice change of pace, upbeat and with a memorable theme, and Leonard Bernstein moves at a devilish pace in March of the Trolls. This CD will not disappoint you - buy it today!

I bought Vol. 1 of this series and was quite satisfied, but I have to say I'm more than satisfied with this one. If you can just mellow out and enjoy some great pieces, you'll love this CD. #15 on Disc 2 is almost worth the price alone!

Kristin Chenoweth won a Tony for the supporting role of Sally Brown in the 1999 revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, made a memorably vampy Lily in the 1999 television film of Annie, and had an NBC sitcom created for her, Kristin! Now she grabs the spotlight in Let Yourself Go, her first solo recording. She mixes torchy standards ("My Funny Valentine," "How Long Has This Been Going On?") with Faith Prince-style sauciness ("If"), gets to show off her operatic and scat chops in the miniplay "The Girl in 14G," and shares a light duet with Jason Alexander (reviving his musical theater career post-Seinfeld). Perhaps her "Stranger Here Myself" isn't the weightiest you've ever heard, but this is an enjoyable album with a good deal of old-fashioned class, expertly accompanied by Rob Fisher and the Coffee Club Orchestra. --David Horiuchi

Do I mean the best album or the best singer? You are correct if you said both! I saw Kristin Chenoweth on a PBS show "Broadway's Best at the Pops," (though it was not the first time I had heard her) and decided to check out the offerings here. This is a collection of the kind of music and performances I love. She has a great range, a precise pitch, and a great style that is at the same time true to the music and to herself. In an era when singers try to outdo each other re-interpreting the composer's original work, not usually with great success, she is a blessing!

After watching Candide endlessly and going to see Ms. Chenoweth in The Apple Tree, I was hungry for something more portable to listen to. At times this fits the bill, but what surprised me the most is how thin her voice comes across on this recording. Perhaps it was the joy of seeing her live that has ruined this listener; perhaps I need to upgrade my aging music system. Then again, maybe the recording is just not as good as Ms. C singing Bernstein or as good as staring at Ms. C command a Broadway stage.

Great CD!.......2007-01-19

I truly enjoy listening to this CD. Kristin Chenoweth's vocal style and abilities are very well-matched to the songs selected for this album. If you enjoy classic, older-style Broadway/popular tunes, I would highly recommend this CD. Ms. Chenoweth has a bright, expressive voice and does a fantastic job with this material.

As with any full-length CD, there are a couple of songs I am not as crazy about, but that has to do with the songs themselves, not Ms. Chenoweth's vocal performance. Overall, I love this album and have listened to it several times now, since receiving it as a Christmas gift last month.

Kristin Chenoweth brings new life to some timeless Broadways tunes while introducing a few wonderful new ones. This high pitched vocal goddess effortlessly provides for a nearly flawless and easy listening experience. I definitly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys jazz vocals, showtunes, or just a new spin on some old classics.

While not overly generous at 55 minutes, the highlights album of the 1987 original Broadway cast recording of Les Miserables is intelligently selected and likely to prove satisfying to most fans. It includes the best-loved numbers of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score, beautiful ballads ("Bring Him Home," "I Dreamed a Dream") and rousing anthems ("One Day More," "Do You Hear the People Sing?") alike, but eliminates some choral numbers ("Lovely Ladies"), redundancies ("Red and Black"), and connective tissue that propels the plot along ("Valjean Arrested," "Come to Me (Fantine's Death)"). Sure, a more perfect selection could have lasted longer than half of the two-disc set's 104 minutes by adding "At the End of the Day" and "In My Life," among others, but it's still a good representation on a convenient single disc. Of course, those who always want to re-create the theatrical experience will never be satisfied with a highlights album.

Re-creating their roles from the London production, Colm Wilkinson plays the heroic Valjean and Frances Ruffelle is the despondent Eponine. Randy Graff (Fantine), Terrence Mann (Javert), David Bryant (Marius), Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Michael Maguire (Enjolras), and Leo Burmester and Jennifer Butt (the Thénardiers) fill out the cast. --David Horiuchi

Each member of the Les Miserables cast stands to deliver this musical to its audience. Within moments we are transported to France during their Restoration. We experience sadness, laughter and, indeed, want to join in their crusade. The music and deliverance, in my opinion, is excellent.

Great Score, But Highlights Missing Critical Songs.......2005-08-05

Composers Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score for "Les Miserables" is simply brilliant and the spectacular Broadway cast, led by Colm Wilkinson, Randy Graff, Terrence Mann, and Frances Ruffelle, help bring this incredible music to life!

While I normally enjoy "highlight" cds, this one clocks in at a mere 55 minutes and could have easily included a couple of additional tunes (thus losing one star). Most notably missing: "At The End Of The Day", "Come To Me", "Red And Black", and "In My Life". The show's most memorable songs, however, are included.

Highlights are never worth it. You will never get the little in-between songs which make a show complete, montages will be cut together badly instead of being full songs as they should be...so much is left out. This is a fantastic show and deserves to be heard in full.

To call Celine Dion predictable would be too easy--other divas should be so lucky to still be walking her platinum path. As Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey struggle to update their sounds without losing their core following, Celine keeps on delivering power ballads and inspirational pop without ever losing her footing. What sets One Heart apart from her previous chart-toppers is an unrelenting theme of joy and believing in one's self. From the car-commercial-driven tempo of "I Drove All Night" (Dion's equivalent to Cher's "Believe") to the "power of one" message in "Love is All We Need," the album bristles with an upbeat mood that--even for non-fans--can be hard to resist (it's important to note that there is no chest-thumping heartbreak here). Small concessions to staying in step with pop trends appear on the dance-floor tracks (which bring to mind Shania Twain and even Britney Spears), but ballads like "In His Touch" and "Have You Ever Been in Love" stick to the tried-and-true formula of allowing Dion's impressive voice to take center stage. As she settles in for an extended stay at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, One Heart is both well timed and well executed. I love Celine Dion's music and this is no exception. I love almost every single track on here, I know the words to every single song and I play it at least once a week. My fiance is sick of it, but I adore her and never get tired of listening to her. Her voice certainly has no changed and is still as powerful and beautiful. I would definetely recommend adding this to the collection.

As usual Celine displays wonderful vocal ability but the material isn't that exciting. This is my least favorite recording by her.

This is a good upbeat cd.
1) I Drove All night-Pop/dance song, really good. Her vocals really shine. Excellent.

2)Love is All we Need-Pop song, kind of sounds like a Britney Spears song but with better vocal work. Good.

3)Faith-Pop song, upbeat with a slower tempo. It's ok.

4)In His Touch-A slow ballad song. Kind of boring I skip it.

All in all a good cd. I wasn't surprised at all because it was a change for Celine (not all ballads). All a follower of Celine for a over a decade I wish they didn't repeat 2 songs from the other Cd. It isn't her best but pretty good.

Wonderful, As Always.......2007-01-04

I love every single Celine Dion album, but this one has a special place in my heart, tied with the previous album. She taps into such amazing songwriters and lyricists that none of her songs could be confused with any previous song she's sung. Each song is a new, fresh, unique experience. After loving her from her French albums to her very first English release to her most recent endeavors, she doesn't disappoint and knows how to keep the music fresh and relevent. Her music doesn't become dated or tired. This album, in my opinion, is very much under-rated, and I'm surprised it hasn't had more attention. It certainly deserves airtime on the radio much more than some of the tripe that's out there right now.

Celine Dion, a mega selling artist seldom dissapoints. This Cd shows the power of love with her power voice from heaven above.
Track 1 Drove all night, is a minddriven pop song which has most of the elements in it to "make the day", when it comes to cleverness to swing your soul and heart in a happy direction. An extragavanza solid popsong. Track 2 Love is all we need is something of a "Britney Spears"rip off,but Dion`s voice sparks more quality in the voice departement way above Spears sometimes irritating cackling voice. Track 3 Faith has an open sound picture, with Dion`s voice lifting the song up there where the sky is no limit. It`s very difficult to point out with words to describe here great voice register, which pushes your feelings in directions where youre innervoice screams for more. Great passion on every note is maybe the right word. This one gives you anyway faith, much of it so to speak. Track 4 In his touch is an ok ballad, which mixes Dions voice in front of the soundpicture. The voice is the great thing. The song is an average affair, but all in all ok. Track 5 One Heart,are back in the more snappy pop rythmic style. It`s an effective heartbeater which makes it. Track 6 Stand by your side makes a journey back to the ballad department, but soon speeds up the tempo to an ok popsong. Track 7 Naked is a minor funky popsong, where here voice is mixed more back in the overall soundpicture. Not extraordinary, but good. Track 8 Sorry for love is back in typical Dion style. Earbalsamic is probably the right word to describe the experience. Track 9 Have you ever been in love, is in the department of strong love songs, with Dion`s romantic touches drizzle like angeldust in your ears. Pure eargasm. Track 10 Reveal begins weak, but then it spins into more interesting territory, but all in all a minor letdown. Track 11 Could woulda shoulda, is in the funky Dion department, where the magic is in Dions voice, which sparks in you ear from high and low tone`s and vica versa. Track 12 Forget me not, is a minor let down. A clicheridden ballad song. Track 13 I know what love is an ok song affair, but the arrangement is overkilled. Track 14 Jet`aime Encore, is in the country pop genre, and is a good listen. Simpel and straight to the point. Anyway Celine Dion has a voice which brings you to places where sometimes the sky is no limit to descibe your`e listning experience.

We always suspected they had it in them, but who knew Yo La Tengo would finally craft a record as wholeheartedly terrific as this? Fourteen years into their career as indie rock's low-key mainstays, the Hoboken, New Jersey, trio have arrived--and it's about time. It's as though simply by sticking around long enough and doing the same thing over and over while constantly refining and focusing Yo La have evolved from scattered, record-collecting eccentrics into the true classicists of '90s indie rock. Blending elements of what has illuminated Sonic Youth, Stereolab, Pavement, and My Bloody Valentine, they've long had a clear voice but never sounded so comfortable using it. Willfully eclectic husband-and-wife multi-instrumentalists Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley--with third member James McNew never sounding more permanent--have previously tended to alternate between their instincts to be a pop rock band and to serve as artsy noisemakers. On I Can Hear..., the group doesn't have to choose between songs and sounds. There's noise leaking out everywhere, but it's always under control. Even the most layered soundscapes--songs like "Autumn Sweater," "Sugarcube," or "Moby Octopad"--have unforgettable melodies, with fragile harmonies to boot. "We're an American Band" (not a Grand Funk cover) could be Simon and Garfunkel singing along to the Jesus and Mary Chain. And on tracks like "Shadows" or "My Little Corner of the World," where the melody consumes everything else, deceptively simple backdrops provide a less-is-more atmosphere. Worthy of nearly all it's indie credibility, the seminal underground experimental pop act put forth another lengthy disc full of quirky charm and surprising eclecticism with their highly esteemed I can hear..., but seems to me this particular outing is just another deposit into an adept lo-fi bands repertoire, no more, no less. With their refined approach at nailing a catchy melody without being too obnoxious about it, Yo La Tengo prove worthy in multiple genre attempts with this musical stew of alt-rock jams. The writing is on point, and the selections remain worthy of it's modern cult classic status as earned, but anyone not directly peering into the specific time period this came out, in the context of this band's career, may find an album strangely lacking of downright amazing material. Most songs are good, quite good, though few are really great. As per usual, interesting, usually borrowed melodies are played beyond an apparent scope intended for some tracks, overstaying their welcome in distorted repetition, as competent and catchy they may be.

Lush and melodic.......2006-12-29

This was my first real exposure to Yo La Tango, and I'm hooked. It's full of all sorts of lush and melodic songs in the tradition of indie rock. Yes, I can hear the Jesus and The Mary Chain influences, but I have to say this style of music goes all the way back to Lou Reed. Not all the lyrics are intelligible and there isn't a song or group of songs that really stand out from the others. It's more like great background music than something you'd want to sing along to. All the tracks sort of melt together into this great sound.

The track "We're an American Band" is not a cover of the Grand Funk Railroad hit. While Yo La Tango's version is an above average song, what would really be interesting if they actually covered the song.

this album is exceptional for YLT. I often flounder between this one and 'and then nothing' being my favorites, but they are different. the variety of the songs is great but they all work together as a cohesive album, skipping tracks on this CD is completely unneccessary. there are still some great love songs and a post-punk tunes but this album is more lyrically and instrumentally mature then some of thier earlier works, such as 'Painful' or 'Electropura'. I honestly couldnt say enough about this cd, but i dont like writing long reviews... this is a personal favorite of mine

Ranks among those obligatory 90s hipster discs.......2006-05-08

There is a certain amount of unanimity amongst critics as to what discs from the 1990s should be heralded as great, and "Heart" is generally granted propitious accolades. My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless" is traditionally regarded as a superior recording, and for the most part it is. "Loveless" is an incomparable example of committed artistry, and it should garner adulations by its sheer density alone. However, I've always felt that "Heart", which for the most part exists in "Loveless"' vein of ethereal ambience, was the more immediately human and inviting record. "Heart"'s emotion exists on a unique artistic plane that few artists dare to tread, and the record's often convoluted lyrical musings are viscerally penetrating, more so than most modern pop records. Upon first blush, the band seems to rely on a relatively limited musical vocabulary throughout the album, but extended listens reveal a fairly rich tapestry of styles, sounds and impressive articulations. "Spec Bebop" is consistenly unnerving, but in at least one sense it seems like one of the most integral and necessary tracks on the record. YLT's Jesus and Mary Chain fetishism had to be illuminated at some point on "Heart", and "Spec Bebops" unrestrained entropy is a great testament to the band's willingness to explore the ether. Conversely, the apparent convention of "Little Honda", "Sugarcube" and "Deeper Into Movies" display another facet of YLT's artistic maturity, as well as the band's penchant for sheer histrionic onslaught. The solo midway through "Sugarcube" is the one of most vexing and hilariously apropos moments on any modern rock song, and it becomes apparnet that the band approaches such passages with an equal concern for irony and viability. "Autumn Sweater", perhaps due to its name alone, has become synonymous with stifled hipster love balladry, and by most accounts it stands as one of the most honest and telling rock narratives of the last fifteen years. YLT's ability to oscillate between Beach Boys sentimentality, Can experimentation and Sonic Youth flamboyance, all the while harboring a kind of self-assured ambivalence, is a sometimes startling testament to the band's musical prowess.
All analysis aside, however, I cannot imagine how a human being with an operable soul would not enjoy this record. It has an almost cosmic ability to make the listener feel genuinely good, oftentimes in a restrained and self-negating fashion that elucidates the inner hipster nerd in all of us. The sheer wantonness of "Sugarcube", the cutesie femininity of "Our Little Corner Of The World", (which, unfortunately, has taken on an inextricable involvement with "Gilmore Girls"), and the utter desolation of "Damage" converge to produce an unmistakable experience.
Sadly, there are no true Thurston Moore moments on "Heart" to measure up to "Big Day Coming" and the like, but the band more than makes up for such a discrepency.

Get in the right mood............2006-03-27

The first time I listened to this disc - it felt like nails going straight into my eardrums. We were on a road trip - not the right 'vibe' for the cd. Since I've listened to it quite a few times - and in the correct mood - feels like a really good rest!!!!!

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it.
