I prefer the slow songs on this CD, they seems to be a better fit for my baby. The performances are well played by talented musicians. (I have a degree from Peabody so that's a true compliment)

My baby is 4 months old and absoletly loves this CD. At 6pm when he gets fussy, this is the only thing that calms him down and allows him to go to sleep. It is well worth every penny!

My daughter is now almost 5 years old and she still listens to the same CD she did at 5 months old. She is very bright and is doing amazing in her Junior Kindergarten class. She has always loved music, but she can't fall asleep unless we put on her Mozart CD. I would recomend it to any new or expectent parents, or even to parents who have a hard time putting toddlers to bed. It is a very soothing CD to listen to.

this is the 1st ever musical geniuses slow collection.it was designed by a scientist who recognized musics power on the mind and harnessed it.this album has been proven to stimulate the same part of the brain that relaxes you.or for you brainy types,it gets your dopamine flowing.then theres the fact that this music is like pure ear sweetness.it will send all your nuerons off to dreamland and you will feel a dramatic physical change.my favorite song on this one is the violin concerto.extremely relaxing and great for the soul.everybody with anything from a cramp to cancer should put this one on.besides all that,its exquisitely beautiful youll fall instantly in love!an abselute tresure and blessing to music and the world!

Music for concentration and focus.......2001-05-14

I first read the research on the positive effects of classical music at 60 beats per minute many years ago. With no commercial options available then, I made my own tape from excerpts of world class recordings I own, largely of Mozart. I rarely tolerate background music while I work because it distracts and diffuses focus. The slow Mozart movements have an astonishingly opposite and positive effect, enhancing concentration and mental clarity. For listening pleasure, I prefer the complete works with all movements, as a prior reviewer noted. However, for calmed focus and concentration, by removing the alternate movements this recording serves that purpose with excellence.

There is sufficient variety to avoid monotony, and while the musicianship will not garner critical acclaim it is competent and acceptable for the purpose of this recording. I enjoy it immensely. It is one of the rare pieces I will play in the background while doing work that requires serious focus.

good news, bad news.......2000-07-23

Good news: contains famous works of Mozart for a very small cost. The music is eloquent and perhaps stimulates the brain with the Mozart effect. It is definitly good to listen while commuting and stuck an a traffic jam.

Bad news: These music are so well known that to many, it feels redundant. These are not world-class performers or conductors, so the music doesn't have a new intereptation or anything out of the ordinary. Also, I tend to like to have the entire three (or four) movements of the song, not just one movement. And practically all of these songs are the slow movement so it gets redundant.

this is the last disc of the 3 disc set.its supposed to stimulate the creative juices.it gets your seritonin going like prozac.well,ok.but,anyway,its quite good.my favorite song on it just goes to show how inspirational the genius mozart was.he was alive in like 1770 and was dead by 30.he did this song and it was catchy.much later it was put to words with the tune still intact as "twinkle twinkle little star".so itll help the kids off to bed,but then someone else took the old indian created english alphabet and put it to music."the abc song" was also put to the same tune and now teaches millions of children to take thier 1st steps towards learning to read and write every day.it was also the very first recorded music when thomas edison 1st tested the phonograph sucessfully.its what he used.on this album thier are many fast paced[as fast as they get]songs that stimulate your brain.i dont personaly need any help in the creative department and just listen for the wonderful music.the twinkle twinkle little star song is like 12 minutes long and the performer uses mozarts innovative style to play it in literaly dozens of different ways.ballad,bedtime,frenzied,more notes,less notes,you name it!then theres a whole bunch of other great songs on it.if you call yourself a music lover and havent at least heard these songs,then you are sadly mistaken.a musical landmark!

I'm not the hugest classical afficianado, but this CD is very appealing. I bought the first in the series, Strengthen the Mind, and found mostly the same old crap on it that I had on three other Mozart CDs.

Unexpectedly Enlightening!.......2006-05-12

My wife gave this disc to me as a father-to-be, knowing full well that as a neuroscientist, musicologist and pianist, I put absolutely no stock in the so-called "Mozart effect" (TM). Not only has no one reproduced Rauscher and Shaw's original results in a peer-reviewed journal, but their own results simply showed a slight and temporary improvement in performance of spatial reasoning tasks by subjects after listening to Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, K. 448.

Furthermore, it seems reasonable to me that if any music is to develop the temporal-spatial capacity of the brain, it would be music that is both complex and ordered, i.e. music having melodic, harmonic and rhythmic variation involving multiple voices constrained within self-consistent rules of composition and development. By these criteria, many of Mozart's compositions would satisfy, but the disc "Mozart Effect: Music for Dads and Dads-To-Be" contains either fairytale singspiel, the most sedate and uninteresting movements of mediocre works, movements from divertimento--music designed to be the aural equivalent of wallpaper, or youthful examples of high-spirited immaturity. The most interesting sample may be the theme and variations third movement of K. 481.

Given these biases, how could I reasonably be expected to listen to, much less enjoy, such an ill-conceived compilation? Such were my thoughts as I played the disc in order not to hurt my pregnant wife's feelings. The music played in the background as I was busy editing a paper on RNAi-mediated modulation of apoE expression and formation of neurofibrillary tangles in mice. The disc was pleasant enough, so I played it again as I resumed my month-long struggle to visualize the pathways involved in paranodal junction desensitization, when suddenly everything clicked into place with a photographic flash. I sat back, quite pleased with myself, and began to consciously listen to the music. As the disc progressed from track to track, I began to notice relationships between the different movements that were subtle but profound. I could not name what harmonic, melodic, tonal, or rhythmic synergy was at work, but I could feel the alchemical change within my brain as deeply buried potentials became unlocked and my temporal-spatial awareness expanded to illuminate all the crevices within the dark cave I used to call my mind.

I am a true believer now, and have abandoned my Alzheimer's research to pursue the neurophysiological and neurochemical basis behind the profound, mind-enhancing experience of listening to "Mozart Effect: Music for Dads and Dads-To-Be".

I need to spread as much as possible the qualities of this wonderful recording, and I cannot conceive that no one here has done it before. First of all, we must remember this is a very sophisticated music of extreme technical difficulties. The Violin Sonata was written for Carl Flesch and Arthur Schnabel, two of the greatest virtuosi of the time - time of a 15 year-old Korngold! An incredible example is the scherzo, with the potential of the instruments explored to the limit, or maybe over. A curious thing is the resemblance of a theme in the middle of the slow movement of the sonata with the pop song "When I fall in love". That illustrates a visionary aspect of Korngold early works. He antecipated a couple of well-known melodies of today, not to say that he established the highest movie scoring parameters. The quintet is one of Korngold's most appealing works: again a great range of emotions, never disappointing. The first movement is delightful and deeply fresh, the slow movement is a song which is developed to the highest spheres of chamber music and the last is a touching display of vitality: drama alternated with "joie de vivre". It is more than impressive the commitment and expression of the artists in all these recordings, with a very honest and beautiful approach in all accounts (including sound, phrasing and intonation). I hope more people can get into this music with this excellent recording: it is such a jewel that can make me proud of human race as a supreme realization!

clarinet playing at the highest level.......2006-11-27

I will give a bit of background about myself: i am a semi-proffessional clarinetist, I studied the clarinet for 8 years, my teachers include members of the Israeli Phliharmonic, I was a memeber of the Young Israel Philharmonic for 5 years and was offered a full scholarship for Indiana University's music deparment.

I believe that as far as the Clarinet is concerned, my opinion can be regarded as an educated one. Apologies for this lengthy prelude to this review, I would never do this unless I'd thought its warranted.

Joseph Balogh in considered as one of the top clarinetist of this era. And for (IMO) good reason. His clarinet tone is unique and almost resembles a church organ. This is not just my opinon, this opinon is shared by most of my former colleagues, teachers and proffesional. I have yet to hear a proffesional opinion of Balogh that wasn't of the highest honors.

This recording is IMO one of the finest of the Clarinet quintet, I agree that there are better recordings as far as the whole ensemble is concerned, but I have yet to hear such superb playing of the clarinet. The tone, the control and the classical attitude. I learnt a lot from this recording. My friends learnt a lot from it, and we use it frequently as a reference.
Espcially if you are a clarinet student, I highly recommend getting a copy of this recording, as well as other recordings of Joseph Balogh (he made a few with the NAXOS label and I consider them outstanding).

Not the best, but near. .......2006-05-21

Actually, I don't think that is so-so, and I think that's a big bargain in this prices! They did a reasonable job that played the pieces so naturally, peacefully and softly. In fact, that is what the later Mozart's pieces should be, and the interpretation of them are also good. Overall, that's a good example of these pieces which were played very stably. Except the quality of recording, which got a little bit fuzzy of the cello, That's one is people who shouldn't underestimate it!

I just purchased this CD and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I agree, it may not be the greatest playing in the history of chamber music, but it is far better than the terrible reviews given by the other reviewer of this CD. I find it very relaxing and think it flows nicely. Even with 4 (instead of 5) stars, for the price, it's a good deal.

A Crime.......2001-01-16

I usually only review discs that I've really enjoyed. This is an exception.

In the past, I have found Naxos discs to be a lergely hit-or-miss affair, though with far more hits than misses. Most of the misses, moreover, have been large-scale, orchestral pieces. I always thought the chamber music was a good bet. [Some Naxos discs, by the way, are among my favourites, like Gyoergy Pauk's Bartok solo violin sonata, or Eteri Andjaparidze's disc of Prokofieff's Visions Fugitives.]

Not so this disc. It may well be the very worst recording of chamber music that I have ever heard by a professional ensemble. I keep it in my collection as an example of how bad a disc and performance can be.

The performances are plodding, the recording is muddy. The clartinettist's tone keeps changing in weird and bizarre ways. I can only assume that these musicians had never seen the score before they walked into the studio, or that they just don't like Mozart.
