About the Artist
David Tanenbaum, one of the leading classical guitarists of his generation, has performed in more than two dozen countries on 4 continents. He is internationally renowned for work with composers of our time, having had pieces dedicated to him by Hans Werner Henze, Terry Riley, Aaron Jay Kernis and many others. He recently performed on steel string guitar in two John Adams works: Naive and Sentimental Music, and El Niño. He has recorded more than 20 cd's.
Peppino D'Agostino is one of the world's leading steel string player. Self taught as a guitarist, he moved from Italy to San Francisco and began life there selling vegetables. He has since recorded eight solo cd's, produced numerous books and videos, and tours worldwide.
Product Description
This cd is a meeting of two worlds. Classical guitarist David Tanenbaum and steel string guitarist Peppino D'Agostino met at the Schondorf Festival in Germany, which encouraged them to play together. Their initial concert met with stunning success and they developed the project into the Classic/Steel cd. The cd contains a Classic section of Baroque music by Bach and Vivaldi, a Steel section of original acoustic music by Peppino and friends, and a third section, called Classic/Steel, containing music that lies comfortably between the two worlds.

Customer Reviews:
Great collection.......2006-07-06
I got turned on to this series of train songs thanks to my 4 year old son who loves trains. Not only are these all (1-3) great compilations, and great songs-they are a slice of Americana. I just love them all. And, to "music lover," the song you were refering to about the engineer passing by his house to check on his baby-it is on "Night Train" the 3rd in the series. And, "the wreck of old 97" is a Johnny Cash classic.
The Wreck of the Old 97.......2004-05-15
This is in response to "A Music Fan's" question. The wreck of the Old 97 was an actual event. The accident happened on September 27, 1903 in Virginia, and was immortalized by the song to which you refer. So no, you are not imagining it; but it's probably more of a big deal than you thought. A very useful website has many details and even newspaper articles and photographs. (...)
I need help!.......2004-02-26
This is not a review but I am desperate and need help. This is driving me crazy...Years ago my Grandmother used to sing many of the old railroad songs. One of my favorites was The Wreck Of The Old 97. She used to sing another one, but I cannot remember many of the words, therfore I cannot find it ANYWHERE! I am getting desperate trying to find it someplace on line. The song/story is about a conductor driving down the railroad tracks, and when he passes by his house, if his baby is sick (or something like that) the light on the track (or house) will be red. If the baby is OK, the light will be green. I know I did not imagine this song, but I just cannot remember the words. Does anyone have a clue?? I sure hope you can help!
Thank You! Please email me at ssandlf@adelphia.net if you can help! I would sure appreciate it!!
Train classics from a bygone age.......2003-02-09
This is the first of a series of CD's released by Rounder, all devoted to train songs. This volume focuses on country music, although the series as a whole covers several musical genres. Some of the songs featured here were recorded in the 1990's while others are from as far back as the 1930's, yet somehow they fit together well.
Roy Acuff starts the wheels rolling with Wabash Cannonball, one of many train songs that he recorded. This is followed by another famous train song, Orange blossom special, inspired by the first streamline train ever to run in Florida. That was in 1938, although the Johnson mountain boys' version featured here was recorded in 1945.
Daddy what's a train?, from 1973, was written at a time when it was feared that trains would disappear from America altogether. Perhaps they will one day, but I doubt it. Elsewhere in the world, especially in Western Europe where the population density is much higher, there will always be trains.
Among the other great songs here, Steel rails (the title track) is sung superbly by Alison Krauss, while another wonderful lady, Kate MacKenzie, closes the set with a fine rendition of Pan American boogie. The original Pan American train ran from Cincinnati to New Orleans.
Great album!!.......2001-07-16
This is one of my favorite albums. 'Wabash Cannonball' by Roy Acuff is truly a classic in every sense of the word; Alison Krauss does a fine rendition of 'Steel Rails'; and the transition from steam to diesel power is aptly chronicled in 'Texas, 1947'. Rounder has done a truly admirable job with its series on American railroad songs; I also have Volumes 2 and 3. I just noticed they have released a Volume 4 which will be my next purchase along with Train 45.

Great mix of covers and original.......2004-02-13
Hank was in great form when he recorded this album, which is typical of his music of the eighties - rooted in country but mixed with rock'n'roll and a touch of the blues. On this album, there is a nice mix of ballads and up-tempo rockers, half of them original songs with the other half being well chosen covers.
The original songs are the title track (a brilliant autobiographical song), Woman on the run, Queen of my heart (both brilliant bluesy ballads), She had me (a great rocker) and Now I know how George feels (a great song about the music business).
The covers are The air that I breathe (first recorded by Phil Everly in 1973 but a major international hit for the Hollies in 1974 - Hank gives this song a bluesy edge), Midnight rider (Allman brothers), Lovesick blues (one of his father's classic song, here featuring Leon Redbone), It just don't get it no more (Tony Joe White) and the classic Orange blossom special.
Hank recorded many great albums in the eighties and this is among my favorites. If you like his style, you'll love this album.
MAN OF STEEL, BY HANK WILLIAMS J.R........2000-06-24
Hank made this album as good as the rest. I was satisfied with the song selections on this album and also the quality of the recording.....

Album Description
Sol Hoopii is considered to be one of the greatest Hawaiian steel guitar players ever. He was the first Hawaiian guitarist to incorporate jazz improvisation into his playing, and his style was very influential to other steel guitarists of the 1920s-30s, including early western swing electric steel players. These recordings he made in 1933 and 1934 on acoustic steel guitar with his Novelty Quartette are the last before he switched to the electric guitar, and represent the pinnacle of his performing skill. Most have never been issued on LP or CD. This collection is a must for all fans of Hawaiian music, western swing, and early jazz guitar. 24 tracks, 76 minutes total. Includes many rare and unpublished photographs.
Customer Reviews:
An absolutely amazing collection for both Novices and Fans!.......2007-06-16
This collection of Hoopii recordings is so far and away superior to the two Hoopii discs issued previously on Rounder, it's almost laughable. This CD is wonderful, from the amazingly clear, delicately and sensitively restored recordings to the eye-catching graphics in the booklet. It's such a treat to have an accompanying booklet that's well-written, carefully researched and packed with photos that are never seen before. The music is a joy to listen to, of course, and I think this is an excellent item not only for Hoopii purists, but for those who are new to the music and might be searching for a proper introduction to the genre. I can't recommend this CD highly enough, I'm quite in love with it, and I have other Hoopii CD's in my collection, so I'm not exaggerating. My favorite tracks are: "I Like You", including the hilarious gasps and silly vocal asides that are so clear it sounds like it was recorded yesterday!
"On Our Parting Day", which is just a breathtakingly beautiful performance, and "There's Nothing Else To Do in Ma-La-Ka-Mo-Ka-Lu" which is quite pretty, and an old favorite. For Hoopii novices, as well as die-hard fans, THIS is the definitive Hoopii CD collection to own.
THE GOLD STANDARD OF STEEL GUITAR.......2007-05-02
The quality of sound on this most-recent compilation of Sol Hoopi's work is the best by far. If you're new to Hawaiian steel guitar then this is the right starting point. If you already love his music you'll be thrilled at the clarity, warmth and depth of these early-'30s acoustic-guitar recordings. The packaging is also superior, with comprehensive notes and lots of great photos.

a new begining for Steel Prophet .......2005-02-16
The reason why I say that is because this is the first album without Rick Mythiasin as lead vocalist. The new singer is Nadir D'Priest Who was in bands such as D'Priest and London. First off I must say his singing style is different from Rick Mythiasin's but even so I feel he is a good fit for the band. He doesn't have as much range but seems to have more power and aggressiveness. For me it did not take long to get use to his singing there is just something about his voice. I must say I do miss Rick but in time after Nadir gets some albums under his belt that will probably no doubt change. Like I said there is just something about Nadir's voice. As far as the music is concerned it is typical steel prophet. This album has a very raw sound like dark hallucinations but energetic like messiah. One thing I noticed though is the harmonic guitars aren't as evident on this album. But that is just a minor thing about the album. But I think you should give this album a chance even though it does not have Rick on vocals it is still a good release from steel prophet. But I rate this album four and a half stars because there are a few songs that just don't appeal to me.

A breath of fresh air.......2006-07-03
Just got this CD and it,s #1 on ny play list!!! This CD is full of Outstanding Vocals,Melodies, and outstanding Musicianship...
Great ole time sounds that sound Fresh, and new! Henry Bogdan on National Tricone RULES! Thanks guys for making music that you can enjoy listing to. Michael
Spirited Away.......2005-07-04
This CD is lotsa fun and way cool with excellent music. I first saw the Moonlighters at a teeny-tiny club in Brooklyn, then bought the CD. Although I worried the CD might not live up to the AMAZING QUALITY of the live perf, lo! The CD is AMAZING, too.
Be prepared for kicky tunes with Hawaiian slide guitar and tight female harmonies. (Oops - the harmonies are tight, not the women who sing them! In fact if you see the Moonlighters in concert you'll find all four performers PERKY and GROOVY.)
Some classic songs, like "42nd Street", have transitioned nicely to Hawaiian swing. Others are dark and funky. I play the CD so much it's driving my boyfriend crazy. "Enough with the slide guitar!" he rants. So now we just play it in the morning before work - it works better than coffee.
If you like snappy, energetic tunes with rather superb musicianship, this album has YOUR NAME written on. This is the kind of small, indie music product that puts the blockbuster industry to shame, shame, shame.
Me, Myself, and I.......2002-05-02
I bought this album on the strength of this really cool Hawaiian track with slack key guitar called, Me, Myself, and I. Then, realized that it wasn't on this album. Oh well.
It's a good enough album though.
a different take on acoustic hawaiian music.......2000-08-04
hawaiian steel guitar on top of a ukelele band with andrew sister's/dan hick's style retro female harmonized vocals throughout. well done. the record keeps the lazy, island feel going throughout. great dinner party music or hot summer activity music. excellent, considering i've never heard of these guys before. it does for hawaiian music what "pink martini" does for european lounge dinner music. pink martini is a better cd, but i'm quibbling.

Album Description
In an age when rock and roll morphs into a hybrid world of colorful new sounds, The Geckos form a rainbow, opening minds and hearts and inspiring the sun to shine just a little brighter. Each artist chooses their inspirations and in doing so rings forth a new sound, a fresh sonic perspective. The Geckos musical landscape incorporates Caribbean classic steel drum rhythms, New Orleans gumbo groove and a deep soulful solution which can, at various times, soothe like warm tropical rain or slightly sting like real life tears. For the music aficionado, here you'll discover original musical lines crisscrossing , echoing with the voices of Wes Montgomery, Van Morrison, Peter Tosh and the Talbot Brothes of Bermuda. Band-built tenor, bass, alto and cello steel drums mingle with an array of acoustic and electric guitars, resurrected vintage keyboards and bass in a world of original compositions. The songs on this new collection "rise up" from the realm of the "Hyper Striper" into the heavens just above the "Big Sky" under the stars which form the "Chesapeake's Crown." The many voices that resonate throughout this collection of 14 songs leap forth from a broad community of superbly talented regional musicians brought together in a classic circle of friends, cross-pollinating in a unique and unified Gecko patios. The message: "Meet Me On the Water" massaged by "Warm Winds" for a sumptuous sharing of "Shrimp & Rice." "What's Your Heart Say?"

Best ever Geckos.......2005-02-01
I've been a fan since 1997. This album explores arrangements both typical of the band and a bit out there. There are a couple of outstanding instrumental cuts. Augmenting their trademark steel pan sound is some excellent, somewhat understated trumpet playing. The performances, with additional guest artists, are all exceptional. The Geckos will be hard pressed to top this one!
