4 out of 5 stars Coffeehouse Folk.......2007-06-14

Erica Smith's debut CD from 2001 is a folk music gem that hearkens back to the folk era of the early 1960s when Bob Dylan, Eric Von Schmidt & Peter, Paul & Mary did gigs at coffeehouses. Although other musicians guest on the disc, it is predominately Erica's guitar and unadorned voice singing songs in a traditional folk style. She sings Greg Brown's "Driftless" with a forlorn wistfulness that brings out the beauty of the simple melody and lovely lyric, "Let us cry all of our tears, cry them all out now; Let them flow down & clean all the rivers; And the evening sky is the reason why I'm going driftless." Rebecca Hall's "Come Around" sparkles with Smith's tender touch. "No More, My Lord" is a gospel tune with Alison Kelley on harmonies in a vocal rendering of spiritual dedication to doing the will of God. Erica wrote "Love You All the Way," a sweet melody & lyric that articulates romantic devotion. The CD concludes with Gillian Welch & David Rawling's "By the Mark." With only eight tracks, this independent recording is short & sweet. It is well worth exploring for fans of the traditional folk sound. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Fine, fine music.......2003-03-10

Intimate, pure, unaffected, calm. Traditional and modern melodies, one by Erica, plus a surprising duet. Like a small and varied exhibition of black and white photos, each executed with transcendent care, each with passion right at the surface or just below. Fine, fine music, and great promise. If you like the mp3 downloads then you'll like the whole album.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and graceful.......2002-12-11

I like this record. It reminds me of Judy Collins and Joan Baez. I listen to it a lot and the whole family enjoys it.

3 out of 5 stars Good CD - just not enough of it.......2002-11-02

This was my first time to buy an Erica Smith CD, and while I really enjoyed the music, I was disappointed with the brevity of it. The CD is less than 24 minutes from start to finish. Good music often leaves us with a sense of wanting more, but this product left me feeling like I was short changed as well.

4 out of 5 stars Superb rendition of neglected French Songs.......1998-12-08

This disk contains some exquisite art songs by Massenet and Gounod, many of which I have never seen in other French art song collections. They are interspersed with the songs of two 20th century composers, Louis Beydts and Maurice Delage. Beydts's music is quite lyrical and tonal, reminiscent of the later songs of Reynaldo Hahn - the real jewel is his "L'Oiseau Bleu" (also the title of the CD). Delage's is slightly more modernistic - I think his subtle French wit is lost a bit on me. The high point of this disk is Zimmer's performance of the Massenet songs. It is no wonder the most singers have ignored these songs, the lyrical melodic lines that soar thru the upper register must be quite a feat, and Zimmer makes them sound effortless. She sings Massenet with the same technical brilliance as Beverly Sills and with incredible clarity of tone and warmth.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant stuff.......2003-07-26

Great album IMO-- this one expands the basic folk of her first-- but in a good way-- very nice arrangements, esp. on the more
trad. ones like "O Death" (amazing performance IMO) & "Johnny
Come Down to Hilo." & her take on Carolyn Hall's "Thanks Just the Same"--- brilliant song-- as strong or more so than CH's. In a way, Smith (& Hall too) are a return to the pristine sound of early '60's Joan Baez & Judy Collins, with some elements recalling Pentangle. But especially Smith is very contemporary too. One of the best albums of the year I think.

5 out of 5 stars Reprise, and promise fulfilled.......2003-03-10

Following her monochrome and moving debut album, Erica Smith's "friend or foe" is color with a full range of backup instruments. Her voice remains pure and intimate across a collage of traditional and modern melodies that contain many happy surprises. Most striking about this album are her three superb compositions "31st Avenue," "A War Is On" and "Love You All The Way" (the last reprised from her first album). These are rich songs, in the vein of Gillian Welch and Leonard Cohen. "A War" is powerful. The mp3 downloads represent the album perfectly. They led me to buy both of Erica's albums and soon become a champion of her music with anyone who'll listen.
