About the Artist
Howard Emerson was born in Boston, MA in June of 1951. He started playing guitar at the age of 12. His constant fascination with drumming and bass were to have a profound effect on him. His schoolteachers were constantly telling him "Sit on your hands, Howard! You"re driving me crazy!" He blew out the woofers in his dad"s old Scott Stereo more than once while fixating on the bass track of several favorite records&&&
At 18, while cutting class at the Berklee School of Music, he taught himself fingerpicking. He dropped out, but before leaving for home, he went to show his guitar teacher (Bill Leavitt) what he"d figured out. Bill politely said, "That's interesting". Auspicious, no doubt:-o
Howard toured and recorded with folksinger Eric Andersen (Be True to You" on Arista Records) and then with Billy Joel ("Turnstiles" on Columbia Records).
All the while he was learning bottleneck, Hawaiian style Dobro and open tuning fingerstyle.
He recorded his first solo CD, "Crossing Crystal Lake", in 1998. It met with very favorable reviews in Acoustic Guitar, Guitar Player and Dirty Linen Magazine, and in the webzine Minor 7th.
Howard also is a national touring clinician with the C.F.Martin Guitar Company, teaches fingerstyle, bottleneck and open tunings, cuts and grinds real bottlenecks and is an accomplished woodworker as well.
He lives in Huntington Station, NY with his wife Marcela and their 16 year-old daughter, Nicole.

Customer Reviews:
A fingerstyle delight!.......2006-02-26
With his first CD, Crossing Crystal Lake, Howard Emerson takes you on a fingerstyle journey that begins with a lady bug ("Lucky Lady B") and ends with you asking...is that all there is? From the serene, peacful flow of the title track, to the toe-tapping syncopation of "Dew Rag" and "Dust Mop", and on thru his personal tribute to his wife "Marcelita", Howard shows again and again why he a master of his instrument. Be sure to be ready to move when the very appropriately named "Keep Walkin'" comes on - it's tough to sit still for that one. The final cut, "If You Must Go" is a beautiful piece of music that makes the listener want to ask Howard why he has to go so soon....how 'bout another couple of tunes!! This is a must have CD for any serious fan of fingerstyle guitar.

TOTALLY FLOWING WITH THE MOST ORGANIC PICKING TO GO TO PRINT. HOWARD DRAWS YOU IN , LIKE A GREAT FISHERMAN,, AS HE CROSSES THIS WONDERFULL BODY OF WORK HE SHOWS YOU THE LAKE THAT IS THE DEPTH OF HIS SOUL,AND THE WIDTH OF HIS SPIRIT THRU HIS TUNES, SUDDENLY YOU REALIZE, HE SET THE HOOK WITH THE FIRST NOTE. THIS IS THE FIRST OF 2 GREAT OFFERINGS FROM THIS MASTERFULL PICKER. BRAVO HOWARD. BRAVO TEN STARS!!!
A Great Album for Anyone who Loves Guitar!.......2004-09-06
Howard Emerson's silky smooth fingerstyle comes through in this album. A very nice, well balanced blend of unique contemporary and ragtime pieces. Crossing Crystal Lake is a simple, yet elegant tune with an interesting, subtle rythme that reminds you of a canoe trip through a placid lake at sundown. Dust Mop is an upbeat, intricate rag that just leaves you wondering how he does it. Expertly executed; not overly-produced; sounds like he's sitting in the room with you. Makes you want to just kick back and listen or get out your guitar and [try to] play along!
