Customer Reviews:
The Best Asia Live CD.......2001-04-05
Forget anything released beyond "Live in Moscow" -- except this CD. John Wetton shows why he was the soul of Asia in an absolutely blistering set of music. Not to be missed -- one of the best unadulterated Asia shows (i.e. no overdubs) ever recorded!
Not as nice as Moscow, but highmarks for authenticity.......2001-01-23
The Wetton-led Asia has two live disks out, this one and Live in Moscow. Both hail from about the same time period, 89-90 (and yes, we'd all love to see Asia in Asia from '83 released, but I doubt it will ever happen - STOP THE PRESSES!!! Asia in Asia is now available as Enso Kai...see review for that disk!). Both Moscow and Nottingham have their strong points, but I must weigh in on Moscow as being the more enjoyable of the two performances.
Granted, Moscow was a much slicker production, from Rhino records which had more to invest in the product. Plus that disk also 'benefits' from overdubs (a double edged sword). Thus, Moscow is easier on the ears than this Nottingham show. Wildest Dreams sounds like it was done by a garage band on this disk. Its done competently enough, as are all the songs on the disk, but it seems like a far cry from the version on Asia in Asia.
I suppose my two disappointments with this disk are as follows: 1. The audience: It has to be canned! I've never heard an audience at a rock show sound as uninspired as on this disk. They sound as if they're watching Liza Minelli! SNOOZE. 2.The scant photographs that accompany the disk ignore Pat Thrall. He was a huge part of the band during this tour and deserves more recognition. At least in the Moscow disk there's ample recognnition for his efforts.
Now, on to the positives. 1. Song selection - Not better than Moscow, but as good. They were wise to include the two songs from the then current album. Prayin' 4 a Miracle, while not on par with earlier classics isn't bad, and sounds good here. Days Like These rips! They might be playing the song a bit too fast but who cares! It sounds great. Unlike other reviewers, I miss the Crimson and Buggles stuff. If you'd ever been to an Asia show hearing those nuggets was a part of the concert, just as the Clap, or Sketches in the Sunset were. Since they were included on the Moscow disk, I don't mourn them here because leaving them off allows for other stuff from the tour (like P4AM, and DLT)
Overdubs - there aren't any. THAT'SGREAT! No wait, that's bad. Yeah, makes it not as easy to listen to as Moscow, but there are some quaint gaffs here that are gems. At one point, the keys drop out of a song entirely! I love shows without overdubs cause they're raw. I like shows with overdubs cause they're more technically correct. Bottom line, with Moscow and Nottingham, you get the best of both.
Overall, good live outing, not their best. Paired with Moscow its an awesome 1-2 combination...
Best Asia live cd with Wetton.......2000-10-03
While this isn't the best Asia live cd ("Live Acoustic" easily takes that honour), "NOW-Live In Nottingham" is a fine release. If you want Asia live with original frontman John Wetton, this is a better cd than the two "Live In Russia" releases. Their isn't any obvious overdubbing, the band is tight and the song selection is excellent (with the exception of the somewhat dismal 'Prayin' 4 A Miracle'); well worth seeking out.
Not ASIA in ASIA, but pretty good.......1999-12-23
I missed out in obtaining a copy of Asia in Asia, so I have been looking for a live recording fromo Asia. Though it is not the original four, Pat Thrall does a good job on lead guitar. If you are looking for a good live recording of some of the original songs, this is a good choice. The worst part about the CD is that the audience sounds fairly small, and you don't get the real arena feel as you did in the 1983 concert in Japan. This is a must for Asia fans.
We can only wish that the original band members could work out their differences and stage a comeback with the style and flare they had in the past.

Don't be fooled.......2005-09-03
Unfortunately, it's the same CD, which was issued as "Live 1970", but this one is called "Live in France". I thought it was two different CD, so I was a little bit frustrated after receiving the same CD.
But regarding music, does not matter which one of the names is written as tittle - the music is perfect. Highly recommended to all Soft Machine fans
for softs fans only: single disk cd.......2002-12-08
the cd i have and the one pictured is only a single disk and does not have the listing that is advertised above. this is music recorded in europe in 1970. the disk is about 47 minutes in length. recording quality is so-so. first 2 tracks, facelift and moon in june are excerpts under 6 minutes each. if you like the softs earlier material, get the cuneiform releases. i think they are hitting the bottom of the barrel of early live recordings. wouldn't mind seeing some live recordings of their later releases.

Customer Reviews:
Live in Tokyo 4 plus.......2001-01-11
I always loved the sound of John's voice. In his days with King Crimson as well as UK and Asia. While this has an almost sloppy live feel, it is most interesting. Trying out a new band and letting them stretch out on his classic tracks. It all comes down to that wonderful voice. It is the most definitive in progressve music(if we must label) After you purchase this don't miss out on Chasing the Dragon and the great live set with Steve Hackett entitled Tokyo Tapes which features John doing his classics plus some Genesis covers.
Not too progressive not too sweet.......2000-11-06
Yes, i like John Wetton. No, i don't follow him blindly, since besides the ups, the man has too many downs in his history. Too many bands, too many styles (i have also a LP of Wetton with the British heavy metal Uriah Heep!) that took him to too many directions. Sometimes Wetton is too kitschy and sweet (like in his terrible album with Manzanera). Luckily, that album stands the standarts of progressive rock listeners. Personally i look for pieces from "King Crimson" and "UK" more than "Asia". That album includes some of the 3 bands, and Wetton does well. The best moment of the 2 CDs is the acoustic version of Crimsons "The night watch". Much much better than the original! "Easy money", also one of Crimson, is done o.k, and so are the UK titles. The 2 solos (drums and keyboards) are not necessary.

"But this one goes up to eleven...".......2007-03-18
In the days when guitar distortion and feedback were all the rage, wot's a trio of Brit lads to do with only an organ, bass & drums?
Answer: turn everything up to 11 and fuzz the hell out it. Hugh says: "We used to wear earplugs, but there must be a lot of Softs fans out there with tinnitus by now." Amen! Maybe it's dedicated to you (or Hugh) and you WERE listening, but you're standing perfectly still in the deaf corner.
somewhat limited power trio of organ , bass and drums .......2004-09-24
WARNING SOFT MACHINE FANS. ALMOST ALL OF THIS CD IS ON THE ANTHOLOGY: MAN IN A DEAF CORNER ANTHOLOGY 1963-1970. that 2 cd set contains 1 cd of very early free jazz experiments and a 2nd. cd of live recordings including almost all of "live at the paradiso 1969". the music is of somewhat limited interest over all with the live recordings being much better than the free jazz. "live at the paradiso 1969" in particular reveals the missing saxophone (on this recording) as the key to their later success and drummer vocalist robert wyatt as the band's main talent. 3 and 1/2 stars.
All things distorted........2003-11-20
Live at the Paradiso is Soft Machine at their best! It captures what they were on stage, live. Keyboards, bass, vocals are all distorted. Keyboards careen out of control, playing at a frenetic pace. This is just an outstanding album from the Progressive Rock years. Live at the Paradiso is loud, raw, and straight out of the amps. This is my top pick from the Soft Machine catalog.
Fascinating Look At The Early Years.......2001-06-13
This 1969 live recording documents the early, pre-fusion Softs performing their 2nd LP in concert. The performance is quite excellent though occasional technical difficulties like microphones cutting out, leading to some missing vocals, make it less than technically perfect; but that is what it's all about, a bare bones sound board tape re-ceating a real live gig without any touch ups. Recommended for serious Softs fans.
Ingenious, witty, strange, all that............2001-02-12
I wonder if I will ever stop feeling old and decrepit, but these guys have reason to probably never do that. I have no idea where and when this concert was. I don't know anyone who has any idea of what they were doing that far back, but for some reason these guys ran the tape machine at just the right time, and recorded what now are their very young selves.
The result is brilliant. I can't put it any better than the other fan from Victoria - it's one continuous song, permuted and multiplied and divided, and never anything other than elegant.
Trouble is, it makes you rather sad that this just doesn't seem to happen any more. None of these guys were any older than 20 odd when this was done, and just listen to the pyrotechnics and imagination! Will we ever get that good? Will I? I doubt it... But thanks very, very much young fellas. Sure like to see you some day.

Grade C.......2003-12-25
This cd of Asia live, is like most live Asia cds, poor. Although it is better than any Wetton Asia live cd, that's not sayng much. The recording is poor, sounds like someone out in the crowd is holding up a tape recorder. The vocals are distant, the drums hollow, and the rest all is mixed into a muddled mess. Does contain a fair look at Asia's cd up to the release of the cd, which was recorded on the AQUA tour. Sadly it's missing, their two biggest hits, THE SMILE HAS LEFT YOUR EYES & HEAT OF THE MOMENT. This cd does not fairly represent Asia in concert.
Excellent performance.......2000-10-09
Despite the rough sound quality (this is, after all part of the "Official Bootleg" series), "Live In Osaka" is a good set for Asia fans to own. It's a particularly great performance from John Payne's first Asia tour, and their commitment is evident.
Ugh..........2000-04-07
First, I am not one of those old timers who keeps dreaming of the days when John Wetton will return, he's out of the picture and I accept that. I've learned to adapt to what the current singer John Payne has to offer just like learning to live with Steve Hogarth after Fish jetted from Marillion. I was excited when I purchased this album, Steve Howe playing with the band and an interesting track listing, plus I was curious to hear Payne sing the older songs. The actual song performances are nicely done and it sounds like the band infuses a lot of energy when performing live... however, stay away, this is for die hard collectors only. It is an audience recording, and a bad one at that. Why they couldn't take the effort and release sound board recording is beyond me...

pure magic.......2002-03-18
Ellis is a breath of fresh air to the wilting roses of angry riot girl music and pathetic pink pop pansies. Her music and voice are amazing, but what makes this cd extra special is the brilliance of each and every one of her words. She is a poet, artist, magician, musician, and a creator for the now. Get this cd- you will NOT regret it.
Exactly Ellis.......2001-08-18
I think this album is exactly Ellis. I actually like the forgetfullness. I think it makes her human. If you see her in concert she is the same way. I don't think there is anything wrong with making mistakes and being able to laugh to laugh at yourself. Actually I think it is adorable.
Blue Print Live.......2001-05-14
I think that this CD is great. It is a great reflection of just how she is if you see her live. She is fun and you can tell she is enjoying what she's doing. There are a lot of great songs on this album. I recommend it.
Nice effort.......2001-01-04
Ellis definitely has a charismatic personality, but unfortunately she should stick to studio albums. Her constant forgetfulness and flightiness gets old, but her songs are still soothing.

Terrible sound, worse performance.......2003-09-22
This has to be the worst cd I've ever heard. Wetton was obviously
'under the weather' to say the least and the sound is absolutely
pitiful. Lets face it, Wetton hasn't done anything good since
the Asia "astra" album in 1985.
Average bootlet quality only..........2003-06-15
Here's another one...another audience recording of John Wetton live. It is a very good sounding audience recording, but certainly not worth the money...
Did Wetton not record any of his concerts that he has to officially release so-so (this one) and awful (Live in New York, for example) audience recordings? I understand trying to boot the bootleggers but I have better-sounding concert recordings of Wetton I've traded for and been freely given.
Honestly, John, if you're looking for soundboard quality live recordings, give me a call...I have better sounding shows than this one that you haven't released.

Best audience bootleg I've heard.......2001-05-15
Having bought Asia's double-CD 'Live In Osaka' upon its release in 1997, I hadn't seriously considered spending more money on any of the other "official bootleg" releases. I was tremendously disappointed with the Osaka discs, primarily because they come from a show recorded by an audience member who sounds as though he is sitting outside the venue. Four years on, with the benefit of several reviews of 'Live In Philadelphia' which cite it as the best of the lot, I decided to purchase it. This concert was recorded by Rick Nelson on professional equipment. Although it is not a soundboard recording, the quality is surprisingly good. Based on what I've read about the other Asia live discs, this may be the best performance by the band available on CD. The perfomances of Geoff Downes, John Payne, Steve Howe, Vinny Burns, and Trevor Thornton are very good, with only an occasional flub. Listening to the CD's, I feel as if I am just several rows back from the stage, sweating with everyone else (Downes and Howe both comment on how hot it is in the venue).

Customer Reviews:
The good the bad and the ugly...........2006-12-25
The good...
Wetton's voice is wonderful by any measured standard, and, he is in good voice on this recording. His reading of the pieces is spot on. He is so good in fact that he "almost" obliterates that technical concerns of the CD.
The bad...
The guitar work is redundant and even annoying at times. It gets in the way of some of the finer pieces on the CD. The recording is borderline acceptable (see the ugly).
The ugly...
The first time I heard this cd it sounded like it was mixed through one of my cheap junior highschool guitar amps with bad reverb. It has a very hollow sound, like it was recorded from a bad seat in the arena. The hollow sound affects the guitar on some of the cuts and gives it a terrible TWANG sound. The fact that the same note that sounds terrible is hit over and over again on some songs doesn't help.
This is NOT an amazing recording, at least not given the history of Wetton's work. To paraphrase Jack Palance "If you call everything amazing, then nothing is amazing". This one just ain't that amazing - period.
This is a fair achievement at best in my opinion, only for the fan that has to have all the Wetton there is to have.
One of the last performances OK,concerning the acoustic set........2002-10-16
Well We were there in front of the stage(Vigevano Castle Square) with my band and followed carefully the acoustic performance, with an emotional feeling!! Unfortunately it was one of the last exemplar vocal performances in the acoustic set by John, afterwards some familiar accidents and other problems, affected his skill...Anyway despite of his renounce to prog music (since the last UK album)in order to compose more accessible mainstream/AOR albums, even if his voice has not been always clear like in the old times, John has anyway maintained a very good taste (the album "Arkangel" is a typical example).
We hope to see Wetton with his friend Hackett together on stage!!
Intimate Wetton sparkles.......2000-10-17
A great acoustic set. The guitar work by Dave Kilminster is amazing - this CD is worth the price for his performance of "Sole Survivor" alone! The concert was recorded just days after John became a father for the first time, and the joy of such an event is readily apparent in the passion of his vocals.
Great setting, great musicians, but?.......2000-07-20
The instrumentation sounds real good. The mic sound is not great and the preformance is average. Acoustica in Amerika is better as well as the acoustic songs on Chasing the Dragon.
