Toots & The Maytals make melodic reggae with beautiful vocal harmonies. Funky Kingston explores the rougher edge of the band in classic tracks like the gripping Pomp and Pride and the hypnotic Louie Louie. There's a joyous party atmosphere in the rousing choruses and the swaying beats. Daddy is a jazzy, bluesy song and doesn't sound like reggae at all, while the title track is a tour de force of funky reggae. Toots vocalises a lot throughout, whith "la la's" and "da da's" to take the groove beyond words. Rough and rootsy, this album ranks among this legendary band's finest moments.

In The Dark has a spiritual undertone and lots of soul. My favorites here include Got To Be There, the title track, Time Tough, the John Denver song Take Me Home Country Roads, 54-36 and Fever. A very accomplished set that demonstrates the band's versatility and their musical prowess that earned them an almost mythical status in Jamaica. Reggae comes in many forms - whereas there is a strong rock influence in the music of Marley and Tosh, for example, the music of the Maytals is a seamless blend of reggae and soul. Listen and enjoy.

Toots is like a Jamaican Marvin Gaye and James Brown rolled into one. His voice is so real and every note is sung like his life depends on it. How you can listen to this album and not want to shake your a** is beyond me. It is virtually impossible to be sad and listen to this album at the same time. Always an uplifting experience even when he's singing about being broke or being in jail.

Having debuted as a ska outfit in the early 60s, the Maytals eventually found success in mid-decade via a Jamaican song festival competition (at which their song "Bam Bam" took first place), and a string of successful singles recorded with legendary producer Leslie Kong. Following Kong's untimely death in 1971, the Maytals found themselves renamed Toots & The Maytals and recording with Kong's former arranger and sound engineer, Warwick Lyn. The resulting pair of albums, 1972's "Funky Kingston" and 1973's "In the Dark," are perhaps the best -- and certainly the most accessible -- albums recorded by one of reggae's artistic pillars.

"Funky Kingston" includes signature songs like "Pomp and Pride," "Redemption Song" and the title track, along with the band's hear-it-to-believe cover of Richard Berry's "Louie Louie" and a spellbinding take of Ike & Tina Turner's "I Can't Believe." Frederick "Toots" Hibbert sings with a soulfulness unmatched in reggae, equal parts Otis Redding and Ray Charles, and with bandmates who can provide both call-and-response gospel and sweet harmony singing. Instrumentally, the band pulses with deep, hypnotically grooved tracks, crackling with the kinetic energy of their early years.

"In the Dark" strips the band's sound of the overdubbed horn section, and digs deeply into their reggae roots. Hits include the title track, along with "Time Tough," and the prison-time inspired (and James Brown styled) "54-46 Was My Number." The Maytals second hear-it-to-believe-it cover, this time reworking John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Roads," is a marvel of reggae soul. It's nearly impossible to remember Denver's treacly original after spinning the Maytals' rendition.

This two-fer brings together both albums' original U.K. track listings and running orders for the first time on a U.S. release. In contrast, the 1976 U.S. issue of "Funky Kingston" distilled the ten tracks of "Funky Kingston" and twelve tracks of "In the Dark" (plus "Pressure Drop" from the soundtrack of "The Harder They Come") to a scant ten track total. With the inclusion of "Pressure Drop" as a bonus on this collection, listeners weaned on the U.S. original can restore its original track order by programming 12, 10, 7, 17, 3, 2, 9, 15, 21, 20. Not that you're likely to want to after listening to these albums in their original glory.

Bob Marley may have become the prophet's face of reggae, but these two classic albums demonstrate plain and simple: Toots & The Maytals were as large a part of the music's soul as anyone. Period.

Great set from the Georgia-born bluesman and his band, despite the criticisms that the album was too pop oriented and that Cray had sold out. While this album certainly does not top its predecessor "Strong Persuader", it does manage to deliver some great blues from one of the music's finest performers. Cray needs no introduction to fans of the blues, playing to sold-out concerts and working the blues circuit loyally.

"Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" is a solid release from the veteran Cray, though he has made better albums since. As is always the case with Robert Cray releases, I listen intently to the dazzling guitar work to remember why Cray gets paid to do this. The band does not often get the credit they so duly deserve, as Richard Cousins (bass), Peter Boe (keyboards) and David Olson (drums) do an excellent job of accompanying Cray on these tunes.

The horns on here are supplied by The Memphis Horns and Wayne Jackson, and David Sanborn appeared courtesy of Warner Brothers playing saxophone on "Acting This Way". "At Last", track 9, is a 50s feeling blues ballad with Cray singing backed by the horns. Overall this is a high quality outing by the old hand of blues vocals and guitar, deserving a spot in your music collections today!

4 out of 5 stars Was It A Woman Or A Bottle?.......2006-03-01

Tough to follow up an album that catapulted you to stardom, but I still give this one 4 stars. I like to think of this as Young Bob's Guitar Slinger album. He's just squeezing sparks out of his Stratocaster all over the place. If you've ever encountered homelessness & thought "there but for the grace of God...", then Night Patrol is gonna speak to you. I can remember the first time I heard this song like it was yesterday. I think this song is Mr. Cray's greatest recorded guitar playing.

When Robert Cray is at the top of his game, his smooth vocals, stinging guitar work and clever songwriting put him on par with the best the modern, electricified blues has to offer. The title track, "Your Secret's Safe With Me," and "Across The Line" fall in this category, in my opinion. Most of the other tracks are pretty good, the rest are okay, although if you appreciate a more soulful sound, you might enjoy this album more than I do. Still, I've had this CD for years, I play it often, and it has aged well.

This album followed up the "Strong Persuader" LP (yes, it was that long ago) and hit the pop side of the Cray ouevre far too hard. It has several good songs (such as "Your Secret's Safe with Me," and "Across the Line," which are even better live) but also more stuff that sounds like a beer commercial (the title track) or ez-listening ("Night Patrol") than any album by someone this talented should feature. You would be better served by _False Accusations_, _Strong Persuader_, or _Midnight Stroll_ for your first dose of Robert Cray. Then go see him live. While "Young Bob" is now "Older Bob", he's still well worth a night out.

    This recording (Arabesque Z6561) is one of three CD recordings of Victor Herbert's music by Don Hunsberger and the Eastman School of music produced in the early 1980's. (The others are Arabesque Z6529 and Z6547) All are superbly recorded using the original orchestra arrangements from a composer who was gifted in the art of orchestration. We get a sampling of marches, selections from operettas, humor songs, and a selection from his opera Natoma. Teresa Ringholt sings with the orchestra on a few songs and her sweet soprano voice is perfect for the part. We need more of Victor Herbert's beautiful music to be discovered and performed in the way Herbert intended it to be performed. The authenic Victor Herbert may be the next discovery in the same way the authenic Scott Joplin has been discovered by the public.

      5 out of 5 stars It made me homesick for Edinburgh and I only spent 3 days there.......2005-09-22

      I heard this CD while visiting friends in Edinburgh and went straight to their computer and ordered it so it would be here when I got home to the states. In three days I've listened to it at least 20 times. The melodies are haunting and happy and the harmonies are achingly beautiful. I will certainly order another of their CD's. Wish they would tour the Southeastern US. I think they would be appreciated here. They remind me of the folk groups of the 60s only better.

      I had never heard of North Sea Gas but went looking for a CD with the title song by a Scottish group. What a wonderful discovery -- this is -- as the Brits would say -- BRILLIANT! Very well done, great musicians, beautiful renditions of some great songs. Did I mention I liked it? If you like Scottish music as sung by groups, I think you'll really like this CD.

      Is is a great album but it includes some of the same songs on the other North Sea Gas CD'. Please check my Caledonian Connection review to find out how enthusiastic about this group. I am a 12 year long fan and I have all their CD's. Check this group out.

      "Dreamer" is unquestionably the finest recording of original songs by black composers available today. The singing of tenor, Darryl Taylor is superb and demonstrates a vocal beauty, musicianship, and interpretive sensitivy that is rarely equaled. The selection of poems of poet laureate, Langston Hughes is first rate, and even more important, the songs themselves are original, varied and well written. I think every listener will find "Dreamer" an exciting musical experience, and I predict for Darry Taylor a distinguished career as an interpreter of art songs. For the Naxos price, buy two albums and give one to a friend!

      This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.

          Fans of Pram are unlikely to suffer disappointment upon hearing 'Dark Island.' It is more low-key than releases of the mid-90's, although there are some tracks that continue with the retro spy sound of Somniloquy's 'Way of the Mongoose'-- they're even similarly titled. There are also plenty of dreamy melodic tracks with haunting lyrics. All in all, 'Dark Island' isn't as quirky or avant garde as their earlier songs, but the tracks here are consistently satisfying. It's good to see that this low-profile group can consistently turn out rewarding music that is true to form without being predictable or dull. A standout release in the group's ten-year history. More, please.
