Product Description
Traditional American and Celtic music on hammered dulcimer and guitar. Toe-tapping, emotion-filled music -- this album is what repeat buttons are made for.

These Chicagoans have earned their reputation as accomplished acoustic musicians. Phil's dulcimer drives the fast tunes and gently carries the slow tunes. Tom's percussive guitar provides strong rhythm. Their duet playing is a delight. This is the CD their fans have been asking for.

4 out of 5 stars Review Of "Swinging On A Gate".......2007-01-12

Overall I liked the CD. The music was enjoyable, although the compositions were unknown to me. The performances on the hammered dulcimer and guitar were good, but I would prefer the sound of the hammered dulcimer to be more accentuated. I've heared other recordings of the hammered dulcimer instrument in which the sound of the instrument was really outstanding, predominant over other instruments.

Funny and Fun!!
I read about Phil Passen in a hilarious article in Dulcimer Player News a few years ago. I clipped and saved the article because he said that he had a compulsion to play and I wondered then if he would ever go anywhere with his music. How pleased I was to see he had a CD available from Amazon, which I ordered! The CD is fun, has bounce, feeling and good energy. A good buy! -- Bonnie Gordon

I was sitting in my Ophthalmologist's office, waiting to be told about my cataract surgery, and they were playing this CD. I found it wonderfully relaxing and stress relieving! I had to ask what they were playing so I could buy it for myself!

1 out of 5 stars Shock!.......2002-03-31

I have been a fan of dulcimer music for quite a while. I was shocked to listen to music that had no soul. The notes and the timing were fine but the feeling I usually get from the music just didn't happen. The best I can describe it, is hallow but nothing there. I was very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2002-03-14

This album is a favorite of mine. It's a "Must Have" for every cd collection. You'll want it playing at all times!

    5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable!.......2002-04-11

Anyone who enjoys listening to relaxing music that takes you away to a far better place will appreciate these two artists playing soothing melodic melodies. And with such soul! This plays over and over again for selfish pleasure and also an entertaining crowd pleaser. Don't miss it!

    1 out of 5 stars Take a Pass.......2002-02-22

It is difficult for me to write negative comments about an artist who plays the same instrument that I play - that of course being a hammered dulcimer. I would not consider, at this point in my development, recording a CD for sale to the public because I, just like Phil Passen, do not play well enough. There are a number of brilliant hammered dulcimer players with CDs on the market. They represent the music and the instrument well. With research you will find these artists. Take a pass on this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Medley.......2002-02-10

I particularly enjoy the medley selections and playing on this CD -- "Twin Sisters/John Ryan's Polka" and "Blackberry Blossom/Ol'Woodard's Tune" are my faves, though I also love "O'Keffe's Slide/Morrison's Jig." A very soulful rendition of "When You and I Were Young, Maggie." Trust me: the tunes and the musicianship will make you happy.

    5 out of 5 stars Well-presented & Refreshing.......2002-02-07

Treat yourself to the refreshing sounds that emanate from the polished musical talents of this duo as they lead you, the attentive listener, far from the madding crowd and the pressure-packed contemporary lifestyles, with a garden variety of selections gleaned from Celtic and Traditional American music. Having more than once seen and heard this Chicago-based, hammered dulcimer / guitar duo perform in public, I commend them for getting these tracks recorded, not just for the sake of posterity, but so that they can be shared, in a tangible format (so far I have shipped their CD to friends and family in three states other than Illinois), with others who might appreciate them after repeated play. Given their demand, evidenced by their far-flung venue bookings, I would not be surprised to hear their musical interpretations getting radio airplay in the future. Considering that some songs seem almost countrified in flavor, it is the predominance of stringent counterpoints (such as in: "One-Eyed Cat / Cuckoo's Nest"), near-melancholic or mellow ballad style presentations (par example with: "When You and I Were Young, Maggie" for those literary types in the audience), and steadily-paced-without-being-overplayed tunes (witness: "Christmas Eve / Swinging on a Gate" [title track]), that are sure to please. Closely woven melodies often allow the instruments to flow freely like warm summer breezes that get your toes tapping and make you feel glad to be alive or seem to be vicariously sailing on a placid lake hearkening back to the days of yore.

    1 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2002-02-03

If you enjoy traditional music, the song selection on this CD will delight you - however the manner in which it is performed will not, as it is mediocre at best. Originality, musicality, dynamics and ornamentation are minimal. The worst thing however about this CD is the complete absence of any passion. The fact that one learns to play an instrument should not lead to the belief that they have the talent to record and sell a CD. The fact that this recording is being marketed at all is evidence of unwarranted arrogance.
