Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars generous compilation, but soon to be outdone!.......2003-01-21

There are several so-called "budget compilations" of tracks selected from Steeleye Span`s first three albums(Hark! The Village Wait; Please To See the King; Ten Man Mop) on the market and, since the Hills of Greenmore double-CD has been (temporarily or permanently?) deleted, Marrowbones is easily the best buy - for sheer quantity of tracks! This double-CD has no fewer than 27 of the total 31 tracks that made up the original albums (plus a track from Tim Hart`s/Maddy Prior`s 1972 Summer Solstice album). MARROWBONES comprises 11 of 12 tracks from Hark; 7 of 10 tracks from King; and ALL of Mop, i.e. 9 out of 9. So, I would give this compilation 5 stars for sheer value for money. The CD contains informative liner notes too, which is unusual for cheap collections such as this. However, overall I give Marrowbones 4 stars, for two reasons. Firstly, the fact that the cover photo is of the wrong line-up and the wrong year. Other budget compilations have this same error. I don`t know the reason for this. Secondly, the beautiful "Lovely on the Water"(Please To See the King) is not included here. It would`ve made a lot more sense to have this song on the CD instead of Tim Hart`s solo "Ploughboy and the Cockney", which isn`t even taken from a Steeleye Span album, anyway. Still, at the price, you can`t go wrong buying this comprehensive collection of Steeleye Span`s early material.

Updated on 9th. August 2003:
Never mind all that! It has recently been announced that a new 2-CD compilation "The Lark in the Morning-The Early Years" will be released near the end of this month. It will comprise ALL of the first three Steeleye albums, plus three bonus tracks.
