This special 3 CD collection features Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie and Odetta.
Lead Belly gained prominence with forceful folk tunes rendered from the heart of the heartland as only an ex-convict could sing them. His 12-string guitar playing is still spellbinding after all these years. This Tradition release is digitally remastered directly from rare, mint condition 78s contained in Lead Belly's first full album, Negro Sinful Songs, and from 78s released on the Stinson label. Comprehensive liner notes were written by Sean Killeen, President of The Lead Belly Society, which also contributed archival photos for this release.
Woody Guthrie, part balladeer, part sociologist, part political activist, gathered raw material directly from his rich life. He sang his tales to entertain, to enlighten, to change injustices he saw all around. This historical album features Cisco Houston's vocals and Sonny Terry's harmonica (and occasional hollers). The program contains a few original compositions and some of the folk songs Woody found and sang in his early years.
Her second release on Tradition, At the Gate of Horn has been touted as Odetta's strongest album to date. The songs are a mix of traditional African-American spirituals and English folk songs, and Odetta's singing and finger-picking are in top-form on this record. At the Gate of Horn is also notable because it features acoustic bass accompaniment by Bill Lee (Spike's father). Recorded in 1957.
