This is a well-filled, superbly played and recorded disc of William Byrd's enchanting Consort Songs, written for solo voice and strings. Early music icon Emma Kirkby is the expert soprano soloist in a dozen songs, ranging from underground tributes to Elizabeth I's doomed rival, Mary, Queen of Scots, to the religiously inspired "O Lord, how vain," to the comic. Two favorites among the latter are sure to be: "Content is rich," whose text explores the age-old phenomenon that no one's ever satisfied with their lot in life, and "My mistress had a little dog," whose last stanza parodies the pomp of a "royal trial." Kirkby excels in these, shading her voice and projecting the text with deadpan humor. But then, she's in fine form for the others too. Monotony is avoided the range of Byrd's music and by the crack viol ensemble Fretwork, which skillfully plays the often elaborate song accompaniments and offers five instrumental tracks of Byrd's consort music, delivered with panache. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
mesmerizing, if not totally seductive.......2005-02-18
I heard this CD Playing in a music store this afternoon, and try as I might, I was not able to manage to escape without buying it. In fact, I stayed long past my welcome to listen to it all.
I have a genetic aversion to soprano vocals in classical music, for which the only known cure is Emma Kirkby. Her delivery is so simple, so clean, so pure, and it so perfectly matches Byrd's music that you'd think he knew she was coming and wrote the music for her 350 years in advance "just in case". This is a splendid collection. And there is no praise too high for Fretwork. A tremendous band. Normally I might say that 70 minutes of this at one sitting might be considered overexposure, but the music is so....soothing that I can see having this on a great deal. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-01-07
So many good things on this CD I hardly know where to begin, but I'll start by saying that every selection on it is like a divine revelation! The music is exotic as one would expect from Tavener who preceded this music by the "Fall and Resurrection" from which he extracted the theme for "The Hidden Face". And a hypnotic melody it is!"The Hidden Face" is a prayer, for solo countertenor, oboe, and a distant group of muted violins and viols. It deals with the Eastern Orthodox concept of prayer. The disc also includes two other selections involving the countertenor voice with viols:"Apokatastasis" also features Tibetan bowls;the word means:a spititual state of ecstasy. "Nipson" is the title of the second selection and refers to "cleansing the sins." But let's mention the skill it takes for the singer to sing these Tavener tunes. It has to be someone like Michael Chance to handle them for he does bear the brunt of the work on this album. And the closing arrangement of Purcell's "An Evening Hymn" is a refreshing contrast to what comes before. I've had this CD for quite a while and I never get tired of hearing it. Buy and enjoy!!!!
An Exhilarative New Experiment.......2005-06-18
I agree completely rewiew bellow..A kind of inscrutable, abstract beauty comes from of this music and its performers' very good job (and a lot of high notes to Chance on "Apokatástasis").Even to Tavener's fans, this is a fresh, exhilarative experiment.
Strange and wonderful.......2005-05-26
This is an incredibly special album; it changed the way I think about classical music. The first track, written for viola da gamba, oboe, and countertenor, is gentle and heartwrenching. Tavener's beatiful, sustained accompaniment in the strings perfectly compliments the high duet between the oboe and the voice. The album continues from there with more beautiful tracks, including more of Tavener's otherwordly compositions. I highly recommend it for any fan of Tavener, or of spiritual music, or anyone who is up for a new musical experience.

Bach never specified what instrument or instruments he wanted The Art of Fugue played on; nor did he finish it. Fretwork, a group of six superb viol players, leave the work incomplete, stopping in mid-phrase--the effect is persuasive rather than unsatisfying. The sound of the six different-sized viols is just right for listening to the way Bach intermingles the multiple lines through and around one another--we can learn what counterpoint is just by listening to this CD. Some find the work severe and difficult, and played on a single instrument, like a harpsichord, it can be. But Fretwork manage to vary their tones sufficiently to turn the work into entertainment, albeit intellectual entertainment. You may not come away humming, but you'll be fascinated. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Exciting and convincing performance.......2004-06-05
I found this performance as exciting and convincing as any I have heard. I heartily recommend the recording for any listener, early music/historically informed performance buff or not. Given that Bach was writing in a style already outdated in his time surely counters any objection to playing the music on instruments that had passed their peak of popularity before Bach's birth. A great recording of this music.
An ethereal and haunting performance of Bach's masterpiece.......2004-05-09
Like one of the other reviewers, I am an avid collector of performances of Bach's Art of Fugue. Among my favorites are the version by the Emerson Quartet, the Canadian Brass, and the version for string orchestra by Bernard Labadie and the Violons du Roy. But this recording by Fretwork, which features a performance of the Art of Fugue for viol consort is probably my favorite; it's certainly the one that I listen to the most. In my opinion, the haunting, ethereal, and rather 'open' sound of the viol is the perfect medium to convey the true character of Bach's final masterpiece.
Yes, I am aware that performing the Art of Fugue on viols is not historically accurate, but unless one absolutely has to have a period instrument performance, what does it matter? Actually, I find the 'inauthenticity' of the performance rather unique in that most 'historicaly inaccurate' baroque performances use instruments that came into use after the baroque period (e.g, piano). But the viol's popularity reached its height during the century before Bach and had already gone out of fashion by the time of Bach's birth, the last work of real significance written specifically for viols being Henry Purcell's brilliant series of Fantasias from 1680 (I would recommend Jordi Savall/Hesperion XX's recording of these pieces). So, this recording of Bach's Art of Fugue for viol consort achieves a rather different kind of musical anachronism than what most are accustomed to: it uses instruments from the period before the piece being performed was written. I find this very intriguing and would be interested in hearing how this would work with other, perhaps later music. I could imagine that Schubert's fourteenth string quartet, the 'Death and the Maiden' Quartet, would sound very interesting performed on viol consort!
In any event, the performance on this CD strikes me as basically flawless and thus fit for listening on headphones, which make the experience even more haunting and intimate.
Pleasing version for a consort of viols.......2003-09-19
Bach's last great work, "The Art of Fugue," is one of those pieces that I can't get enough of---I have versions for string quartet, harpsichord, orchestra, small orchestra, piano, and organ. Perhaps the "ultimate" recording I own, the one I'd take to a desert island, is Jordi Savall's small-orchestra version. The string quartet version is very enlightening; the counterpoint etc. is very clear. Ahh heck, I love 'em all; and I also love viol music (Byrd, Tye, Purcell, et al.) so I figured 'why not?' The overall sound of the viol version is mellow, and not too dramatic. What do you expect from viols anyway. This is an "Art of Fugue" for Sunday afternoon, know what I mean? So if you want only one (only one? come on!) "Art of Fugue," make it Savall or the Delme Quartet or Robert Hill or Kenneth Gilbert or Glenn Gould (on organ AND piano; his Fuga a 3 Soggetti is the summit of art). Enjoy!
Interesting if not wholly successful instrumentation.......2003-02-27
We can almost undoubtedly assume that Bach meant this work to be played on either harpsichord or organ, and while there is nothing wrong with arranging it to be performed by a chamber ensemble, there is the question of what instrumentation can best articulate the essence of the work. Even in Bach's time, the viol consort was antiquated, and likely the performance of his score by such then would have been as likely as a harpsichordist playing a nocturne of Chopin's in that composer's time. Is this beside the point? If our listening requirements do not include historical accuracy, yes. But if we seek a performance that can better uncover the full spirit of the music, I would suggest that is done by the keyboardist Gustav Leonhardt, or in the case of an ensemble, either in the fullbodied reading by the Julliard Quartet, or if we prefer our early music without vibrato, in the very finely articulated one by Keller Quartet. In either of these latter two, the interplay of voices achieved strikes the listener as a more appropriate conveyance of Bach's tremendously haunting and profound work.

In May by Ludwig Senfl is instrumentally performed by Fretwork. The singing of Charles Daniels, tenor, is very special as I imagine Herr Senfl intended it. Fretwork and Charles Daniels are most balanced and lovely. I say it is as pleasing as Cipriano De Rore's Missa Praeter Rerum Seriem by the Tallis Scholars -a true gem. This would make a most excellent gift if one wishes to share it.

Williams's eighth record presents 13 warm acoustic-guitar instrumentals that reveal a slew of musical influences while never straying from the guitarist's understated style. Williams finds inspiration in songs from an array of artists, including Beethoven, Brazilian pop star Caetano Veloso, American bluesman Jorma Kaukonen, Brazilian accordionist and archivist Luiz Gonzaga, and reggae great Toots Hibbert, whose "54-46 (Was My Number)" is a highlight here. His original compositions draw from the wells of Delta blues, English folk, and even West African kora. Those who seek fire and grit may find Williams's playing a bit tepid, but fans of quiet, intimate, unobtrusive guitar will appreciate Little Lion for its grace and Williams for his unerring technique and taste. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Clean, intimate acoustic guitar.......2003-12-20
Brooks is a master. I've been listening to him ever since the old, old days when I had a radio show and the record company sent me a copy of "Knife Edge." My brother and I, both guitarists, have loved him ever since. We've gone to see him in concert a handful of times, which is why I can say that this album is quite like a private evening with Brooks at the fireside (although the closest I've gotten to that is a nice dinner after one of his shows).
Brooks plays many of the songs in this CD at his shows, and this CD is pretty close to those performances. Sometimes the guitars are multitracked but mostly you just notice his understated guitar wizardry. Make no mistake, the man can play guitar, but he knows there's no point in trying to impress you with stupid fast riffs. When he plays fast notes, you almost always notice it after the fact.
Sonically, it's a real treat. Please, if you haven't got a good pair of headphones, try to listen to it through some. It's very intimate through a good set of cans; you're placed about 6 or 8 feet in front of the guitar (though the mike was almost certainly closer). The production is pretty sparse, though it sounds like it was recorded in a nice room.
The CD is an engaging collection of songs that I'm sure you will enjoy. I won't bother comparing Brooks with other artists, because I feel he's pretty unique. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.
Relaxing Guitar Music - With Feeling.......2001-12-21
Not new age drivel, not mindless musak, this is decent acoustic guitar work, melodic, with feeling and perspective. It is also well produced, and is fine as both background or foreground sound. I picked it up to learn a song for my nephew's wedding, however, I enjoy listening to all of it on a regular basis. If you like this kind of music, I recommend it.
Great album!.......2000-11-01
The reason I give this album 5 stars is because it's just plain fun to listen to. I had the priviledge of seeing Brooks for the first time at a concert in a small bakery in Seattle... That was the perfect introduction to his music because now I can picture him playing when listening to the cd.
The songs on this album are crisp and light, but complex...and you can tell there's a story behind each one. With songs like "Lizard Logic," you can just sit back and let your mind wander. Like I said, it's just plain fun to listen to.
Fingerstyle guitar at its best.......2000-02-24
Amazing technique, an incredible sense of syncopation ... this album is a treat to listen to again and again.
Brooks Williams at his best.......2000-01-28
Brooks Williams is one of the finest singer-songwriters around. What is often overlooked, however, is his incredible skill with the guitar. He is a gifted finger-style guitarist. He is also an excellent writer/arranger of instrumental guitar music. Several of the songs on this album are familiar to those who know Brooks Williams' music. Several are new. All the cuts are good. He moves gracefully from up-tempo, African and Brazilian rythms to the more contemplative style of "Wondorous Love", an old American spiritual. The latter song is particularly moving. It captures what is best about Williams' playing, the spirit behind his music. You can teach technique, but what makes a performer an artist is heart and spirit. Clearly Williams' has both, and this album exemplifies that.

Customer Reviews:
Byrd and Fretwork = perfection.......2003-09-19
Some of the best music for viols ever written played perfectly. Pounce on this one.
definitive performances.......2001-03-10
While Virgin has now reissued many of these performances on their budget line, the convenience of having all of Byrd's consort music on one disc still makes this an appealing choice. Although newer recordings by groups like Phantasm present a welcome alternative to Fretwork, this is still the cycle you will want to own. And "cycle" is the right word, since the scattered cantus firmus pieces and Fantasias present a beautiful coherence when played in sequence as they are here. Fretwork gives a spirited reading, and Byrd's contrapuntal textures are fascinating, especially in some of the five part works, like Browning and the second of the five In Nomines.

A great place to begin.......2003-08-24
This was my first blues CD. I used to listed mainly to rock music, and it was the guitar-angle that caught me....a few hundred blues CDs ago.
If you are relatively new to classic 50s and 60s blues, "Chess Blues Guitar" is an excellent starting place. This double-disc set boasts lots of well-chosen songs by Robert Nighthawk ("Anna Lee", "Someday"), Elmore James ("I Can't Hold Out"), Howlin' Wolf ("Killing Floor", "Hidden Charms", "I've Got A Woman"), Albert King, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Little Milton Campbell, Otis Rush, Jimmy Rogers, Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown, Buddy Guy, Bo Diddley and many more.
The Muddy Waters songs aren't really among his best, and are obviously chosen for the guitar playing, but the Howlin' Wolf-tracks in particular are not only sublime examples of classic blues guitar playing, "Hidden Charms" and "Killing Floor" are also two of Wolf's best-ever songs, and the former features perhaps the greatest guitar solo ever comitted to tape.
And most of the lesser-known songs are excellent as well, even offering something for the more experienced blues fan:
Blue Smitty's "Date Bait", Danny Overbea's "Forty Cups Of Coffee", Morris Pejoe's "Tired Of Crying Over You", "Give Me One More Shot" by J.B. Lenoir, "One Sunny Day" by Lonnie Brooks, Eddie Burns' "Treat Me Like I Treat You", "Claim On You" by Lafayette Thomas, and Jody Williams' "What Kind Of Gal Is That" are all great songs, and not that easy to find on compact disc.
A fine purchase for novice and veteran alike. Highly recommended.
Killer Fretwork for guitar lovers.......1999-11-24
Chess was the home of most of the bigger blues legends of the 50's and 60's. This compilation is a must have for any blues guitar lover. Some of the early tracks (the first 10 or so) are country blues and are fairly mediocre, but the rest of the album is 5 stars. Lots of catchy instrumentals from Earl Hooker, Jody Williams, Chuck Berry(even his are good!), Buddy Guy(you can here where Stevie Ray was influenced from-check out Buddy's Boogie)as well as the great Hubert Sumlin on the Howlin Wolf tracks, Otis Rush, Little Milton, and Bo Diddley. This is true blues before the rock influence caught on, so be sure to include it in your collection.

Superb!.......2006-03-20
If you like the complexities of melody and rythm, this recording of Bach using only viols will take you away. Beautifully recorded too. You can hear everything.
Dark, rich clarity. Intricate detail and very listenable!.......2005-12-24
I was somewhat apprehensive about buying this CD because of a previous Fretwork CD entitled "Art of the Fugue". I was not only very happy with this but CD, but very impressed. Instead of using modern instruments, the music is arranged using groups of Viols (instruments that were already long obsolete even by Bach's time). You might think that such a choice of instrumentation might make this CD more austere than rich, but you will be pleasantly suprised. I will concede that the viols grouped in the music here do produce a dark sound, they nonetheless lend a particuliar intricacy (especially in C Minor) that cannot be otherwise heard in Bach's original organ arrangements.
