Editorial Reviews
In The Groove, October 2005
A brilliant mix of songs from Blue Amberol Records!
Product Description
As would be expected from the world's first authentic sound recordings, the tracks on the Edison Sound Recordings - (Humorous Songs) Audio CD are far from Dolby standards. What is delightfully surprising is the fact that there is an amazing level of clarity. We must, at all times of browsing this CD collection, remember that we are listening to audio history here. It has been remarkably well preserved and superceded my own expectations as a sound engineer.
The second pleasant surprise is the genuine entertainment value of this CDs content. There is real humor in the subject matter, artistic voice inflection for added effect and an overall aura of accomplished Vaudeville. This collection can be scanned from both a historical and pleasurable distraction perspective. It is evident that certain winning formulas in stand-up comedy - including the type of background music - have survived the test of time. Anyone who has seen Disney's early Buena Vista cartoons will have an instant sense of déjà vu. This CD is highly recommended, especially for serious collectors of rare audio materials.

This is history.......2007-05-08
I purchased these CD's to add to my collection of Historic works of Thomas Alva Edison. I purchased the bundle pack but I wanted to give reviews of each cd individually. This is a fantastic collection. The quality is perfectly preserved and shows truely just how amazing and ahead of his time, Thomas Alva Edison was. These cds contain all the examples of his pioneering inventions.
It Made Me Feel Young.......2006-05-24
I'm an older woman and it seems like there is nowhere I can go these days to find the type of music I used to listen to as a child. Modern music is just not my thing. I stumbled upon this CD when I was lookin for information about the life of Thomas Edison and ordered it when I realized that I knew most of these songs and had not heard them for years. The sound quality is scratchy sometimes, but just to hear these songs again was an incredible and memorable experience for me. They may be 80 years old but they still sound good to me.
I have always taken recorded sound for granted... here it is in the raw. An overwhelming sense of history is inevitable.".......2006-05-02
"Some of this stuff (in the Edison Sound Recordings - (Humorous Songs) Audio CD) is really funny. The court routine with the corrupt judge is worthy of reenactment in the best of today's TV sitcoms. Where on earth did you manage to dredge this material up from? To be able to hear it in the comfort of my living room is a weird and wonderful thing. I have always taken recorded sound for granted... here it is in the raw. An overwhelming sense of history is inevitable."
Many thanks, A2ZCDS - this was a rare and memorable experience........2006-04-28
"I could not help but latch on to the irony - at the time there recordings were made, the LP would have been considered High Technology. And here I was, listening to these long dead voices from the past, using equipment that exists only in museums now, on my expensive digital Kenwood Sound System. This is history at its purest - interactive, self-explanatory and totally delightful to perceive. Many thanks, A2ZCDS - this was a rare and memorable experience."
Comedy Sure Has Changed.......2006-04-27
It's always interesting when something you order is not quite what you expected, but still entertaining.
I bought this because I wanted to hear the comedy and didn't realize at first that the tracks are very old - in fact some of the first things ever recorded - by Thomas Edison for christ's sake!
That said, once I realized that I had to put myself back in time a little bit the tracks are very funny.
The best part is just thinking how long these things have survived and if it wasn't for recordings like this there wouldn't be any comedy on record today.

Product Description
This historical ride down the corridors of music has many landmarks along the way - 18 in all. Each is a carefully preserved and restored blast from the past in the ultimate sense of the term. They take you from one musical discipline to another, but the switchover is effortless because the listener is at no point tempted to critically analyze the music itself. This would be as foolhardy as trying to aesthetically judge the gigantic statues that guard Egypts ancient Valley of the Kings.... Suspend all you ever held was true of music, because this is where the very Truth was born. You do not question timeless monoliths - rather, you reflect on the triumph of human endeavor that made their production possible. Edison Sound Recordings - (Popular Instrumental Music) Audio CD is, at the root level, an act of homage to the very concept of humankinds love of music. Above that, it edifies the one man who gave us most of the inventions with which we define our world with today - Thomas Edison, inventor of recorded sound.

Rare Recordings.......2006-07-20
Despite the rather overblown hype on the package, these tracks are pretty darn intersting. Edison, as you may know, was the first person ever to record music and he recorded what was popular at the time. In a way these are the first hit records ever made. They have a scrathy feel to them, but they give you a strong sense of popular music history and you can hear the strings of what would eventually become jazz and blues a decade or two later.

This is a groundbreaking CD - who would ever have thought of making such rarities available to everyday people? I have a friend who prides himself in his collection of old recordings - well, I guess my set of Edison Sound Recordings CDs will shut him up for good. I particularly enjoyed the Popular Instrumental Music, being a fan of military marching stuff. I'm extremely happy with this purchase I have made from A2ZCDS.

Product Description
The miracle of recorded sound is something we take pretty much for granted these days - I readily confess that I did till I came across the Edison Sound Recordings series by A2ZCDS. It is easy to imagine that the appreciation or music and poetry begins and ends with our own awareness of it, but the (Hymns, Poetry and Music) Audio CD conclusively proves that this is a delusion. When Edison invented the phonograph, there was already a wealth of material for him to record for posterity by ways of immortal poetry, timeless church hymns and others kinds of music rendered by highly versatile performers. As you listen to the historical contents of this CD, it would serve to bear in mind that all that we know of sound storage began with these recordings. To approach this material with a purists ear for sound quality would be an affront to the sanctity of history. This is a time to listen to the message rather than the messenger, and the message is clear - humanity triumphs in small stages sometimes, but it is always the beginnings that count the most.

Product Description
Many musical disciplines are represented in this musical time capsule, but the accent in this CD is on the beauty of professionally high-strung vocal cords. You will, at the end, acknowledge that true musical talent has existed for much longer than you may have imagined, and that it is only the post-Edison phase that we are aware of. This realization gives one a deep feeling of history, and a new respect for the Masters of the Past. The ability to pitch ones voice to higher notes is celebrated beautifully in this collection. It will not fail to please musical purists and history buffs alike. The visual imagery that the songs and the context of bygone ages evoke is priceless and infinitely memorable. This is a CD you will be able to enjoy and discuss with your family and friends for years to come - it certainly sparked off some lively discussion in this reviewers own household.

"Maybe I didn't really know what to expect. Maybe I just bought this CD (Edison Sound Recordings - (High Voice Songs) Audio CD) from A2ZCDS as a gag, to have a few laughs. But the musical content is subliminal and surprising in its richness, and I found myself listening gape-mouthed at what these voices and instruments from another age were doing. This is a musical experience unlike any other that I've ever had."
Historically Interesting.......2006-04-27
I bought this disk along with Edison's humor disk (I admit I didn't realize when I ordered that it was the Edison who made the recordings.)
I'm glad I listened to the humor disk first, becuase it let me realize what this was going to be before I put it on.
What you get is a bunch of songs recorded at the turn of the century. What makes them intersting is not the songs themselves, but the historical perspective they are put in - i.e. these are some of the first songs recorded ever.
To hear them now on CD - the most modern recording method is an interesting experience.
I loved this disk for what it is - but if you are looking for modern music it would not be for you.

Product Description
This CD covers most aspects of military music as it was heard in the earliest part of the last century, and even the religious angle is well represented with a heartfelt rendition of 'Onward, Christian Soldiers' by the Calvary Choir and Choir Boys of St. Andrew's Church, New York. Throughout this collection, the baseline recording quality conspicuously fails to intrude; after all, this is history in audible form - far above considerations of 'quality control'. After all, we do not judge the texture of ancient papyrus scrolls - we marvel that they exist at all. As with all other items in this series by A2ZCDS, Edison Sound Recordings - (War Songs) Audio CD is an awe-inspiring compilation, both for the musical content and the historical connotations invested in the fact that these are the absolute pioneering recordings of every featured musical item. As such, this CD is worthy of reverential listening and an overall approach of humility and wonder. It is a personal guarantee that hearing Thomas Edison speak to America in a rare recording of his voice will make your skin break out in gooseflesh.

I bought this CD for my grandfather for his birthday and he loved it, loved it, loved it.
I find it hard to find things he would like and music is the hardest of all. Have you ever tried to find really old music at Virgin. It just doesn't have the stuff that older people enjoy.
He said that he remembered the songs from his youth and he keeps playing the thing over and over again.
Five stars, baby. Five stars.

Good For Historic Value.......2006-05-01
Early sound recordings are always hit or miss - because Edison and others didn't really know what kind of recordings would be popular so they recorded eveyrthing they could think of.
The War Songs here predate World War One but are the same songs that those soldiers would end up singing and capture the patriotism of the moment.
These are not, obviously, doulby quality recordings, but they have a real value to me as examples of history in the making.
