About the Artist
A transplanted New Yorker, Michael Johnathon moved to Mousie, Kentucky in the early 80's to learn the craft and experience the lifestyle of being a folksinger. For several years, he roamed the hills and hollers of Appalachia with his guitar and banjo singing the songs of his trade at hundreds of colleges, schools and fairs. He sang songs about the earth, performed benefits for the homeless and farm families, played in shelters for battered women and children and performed an environmental concert series in coordination with state departments of natural resources in seven states. I picked up this CD used. It came from an estate sale----or an idiot. How any living person could part with it is beyond reason. If you want acoustic blues; Hawkins can deliver them. When it's time to play-----he rips. When it's time to sing----he sings. He doesn't overpower the lyrics with what he could do on the guitar. I like that. You can enjoy the story of "Dehlia" with a perfect guitar back-up. You want incredible guitar? It's on the next track, and track 1, and track 11......... No blues collection can be complete without Hawkins.

First of all, it is Michael Jonathon...correct spelling of the artist's name is always important. That said, this recording is a delightful mix of old and new. From Michael Jonathon's original songs to Woody Gutherie's "Pastures of Plenty" to the traditional "Shenandoah", "Woodsongs" pays tribute to the artistry of the past while pulling the listener into the present with fresh arrangements of old favorites balanced against new works. It's the kind of recording you find yourself singing days after you've listened to it. From the opening rocked-up version of "Shady Grove" clear through to the jump-up and dance "Mousie HiWay" this recording entertains. Michael Jonathon, a New York native, captures the spirit of Appalachia as few from outside the area do. His "Colista's Jam" is both fresh and familiar, wrapped in J.D. Crowe's amazing banjo. Odetta's vocals on "New Wood" are incredible, with a haunting quality that lingers long past the track. Also lending their considerable talents are Appalachian legends, Jean Ritchie (vocals & dulcimer) and Homer Ledford (fiddle & mandolin). If you are a longtime folk fan or just discovering it, treat yourself to "Woodsongs." It's a rare find.

I love this CD. I like the songs Michael chose and the way he voices them. Old music and new music belong together and thank God someone is still out there keeping the songs important. My favorite song is New Wood with Odetta, although Mouyisie HiWay is a lot of fun too. His rendition of Wody Guthrie's Partures of Plenty was unusual at first and the more I listened the more I think it is actually quite brilliant.
