Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best in many years.......2003-09-08

As a long-time fan of Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, Tom Waites, Lucinda Williams, and others, I'm amazed that Ovans eluded me for so long. Well, better late than never! I must thank a good friend in Scotland, of all places, for introducing me to him.

Whew... first the voice: Ovans' voice sounds like rusted barbed wire; like he's been through the grinder and spit out the other end. Second, the music: come to think of it, it sounds like the voice.

Tom Ovans is a singer/songwriter like no other, who grinds his way along gravel roads, through dusty towns, alleys, hearts, and memories. These are rough songs, directly from the gut. After a minute of a stunned reaction to this man's voice, I was transported to a place where few musicians have taken me; Dylan excepted. This man is not "another Dylan" by any means, nor is he another Tom Waites, although it is only natural to draw comparisons, unfair as that might be.

After listening over and over to this CD, I am thirsty for more. This man is unique and powerful. He's not pretty, but he is beautiful in a strange way. Don't miss him. I did for too long, and I regret it.
