Joan Baez Remastered.......2007-02-09
i seem to have overlooked this item among others for some time. Joan Baez's musical interpretations have always been a favorite of mine -- since the time of my youth -- and she's one of the very few artists who's cover versions i can live with. this is release belongs to a selection of CDs i must have as a complete set. i'm glad this issue also features a few bonus tracks compared to the previous CD release. :-)

Joan Baez . . . Nashville Classic.......2005-06-17
Joan Baez . . . a name recognizable to everyone . . . folk singer par excellence! -- one of my favorite albums by Joan was "David's Album". She recorded it back in 1968, just after the Chicago Democratic Convention (and all that conjures in the memories of anyone who lived through it).
Joan took her talent to Nashville Tennessee and into the studio there with the then "Nashville A Team" of musicians and sidemen. And with that, she recored what would become a "classic" album which has and will withstand the test of time . . of the decades and of decades yet to come.
The tracks which stand out for me though on this collection are: "The Green Green Grass Of Home" . . . "Will The Circle Be Unbroken?" . . . "The Tramp On The Street" . . . and "Glad Bluebird Of Happiness". All of these just create "magic" when your ears first hear them . . and every time one listens to them after that. (all these ears later the magic has not dimmed from Joan's pereformances on this album.)
Joan shares a performance with her late sister Mimi Farina on "(I Am)A Poor Wayfaring Stranger", beautifull done. (a bonus "live" track, "How Can I Miss You (When You Won't Go Away)?" also has Joan's sister Mimi dueting with her.
i first bought this album back in 1969 . . . in addition to its lasting mucial qualities, it brings back so many personal memories for me, not only of the political events of those years, but of personal family memories. "Will The Circle Be Unbroken?" and "Green Green Grass Of Home" as performed by Joan on this album will always carry personal family associations beyond and transcending all others.
In short, i love this album and enjoy listening to it often . . i'm sure that anyone who hears it will likewise . .. you won't be disappointed.
Thank you, Joan Baez, for a lifetime of musical gifts . . . but in a very special way, thank you for THIS album and now newly digitally remastered cd, "David's Album" . . . it might be called "David's" . . but in reality it belongs to all of us! :)

Much more than a nostalgia excursion, this CD stands as a critical document of late 20th century American culture. Don't expect a stodgy history lesson, however. The music from the 1963 festival is rousing and bell-clear. Jack Elliott gives a gutsy performance of "Diamond Joe" and Mississippi John Hurt's set is a triumph, especially the signature "Coffee Blues" and "See See Rider." The intimacy and excitement is palpable, even though much of the audience had never heard these songs, let alone seen this country-blues master. But it's the finale that's most remarkable, even if today it sounds surreal: Dylan and the folk elite--including Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and Peter, Paul & Mary--singing "Blowin' in the Wind." An honestly moving moment, though not one that would last. --Roy Kasten

Customer Reviews:
Great Folk Songs and Traditionals!.......2005-05-23
I remember buying this album first in the late 70s on vinyl (it was 2 LPs I think) and I listened to it many times. Now it's one convenient CD and the album offers 20 songs ... 5 songs in each of the four categories: Songs of the South, Love Songs, Roots & Prospects, Old Timey Songs. This is my favorite Joan Baez album and I do like the folksy/country blend with the many excellent traditionals. There are no fancy arrangements, just simple and pure Americana music. If you like this album, you may also want to check out Lucinda Williams' "Ramblin' " album which is somewhat along the same lines, but a little bit more bluesy than this CD. I think most music fans will appreciate this Joan Baez Country Music CD album with so many great songs on it -- it's not easy to find these kind of songs on one CD.
mixedbag over 20 years of recording.......2004-06-23
This is a mixed bag. The last 5 recordings come from the days of Joanie being the folk artist, doing traditional songs, some with the great Green Briar Boys like Ohio and Pal of Mine from her very first album in 1960, 44 years ago! Others are from the first two folk albums where Joanie actually became one of the better Carter family pickers around like little Moses, Engine 143, and my favorite, Gospel Ship, all out the Carter Family repertoire.
Even on these songs Joanie really doesn't sing them as we who sing traditional, old time, or country sing them, but with her hard core note perfect world class soprano, and a tendency to melodramaticize things that are not Melodramic. I remember getting that 1960 albuym and discovering someone died in every single song!
Later, Vanguard the company she was with in the 1960s and 1970s tried to take all their artists in a country direction recording them in Nashville with some of the best studio musicians, not just old Joanie, but Buffey Saint Marie, Eric Anderson, and Doc Watson. Some of the best stuff on this CD for the general non Carter family or bluegrass fanatic comes from this period: the heart wrenching Hickory Wind and the equally great Rock Salt and Nails. Here the limitations of Joanie's vocal approach highly the stark, but sentimental lyrics of great songs, and really touch you. I sighed and stepped back just thinking of those two titles, even though I have been listening to them since the early 1970s. No one should be denied the experience of hearing them.
Curiously missing is Joan's best Nashville Album. This is what we used to call "The White Album" because it was a two volume white looking record looking surprisingly like the Beatles 1968 white Album, of Bob Dylan songs. It was recorded in Nashville. There is some great work on that album on fiddling and fiddling with sol fagio by the GREAT JOHNNY GIMBLE, and some really great arrangements of the Dylan songs by whoever was producing Vanguard's Nashville sessions.
Except for the two cuts with the Greenbriars, there is nothing on here that I would think of sounding really country, particularly in Joanie's voice. She tries but she is into something of her own which one either likes or dislikes. A lot of the Nashville arrangements are artful and interesting. This is for fans of Joan Baez or fans of some of the songs.
For Country get a country artist.
One of a kind.......2004-01-08
I love this album, if for no other reason than that it includes "Outside the Nashville City Limits" and "Hickory Wind." Ms. Baez's rendition of both songs is enough to bring tears homesickness to my eyes (even when I'm at home! ;o) ), without being overdone. Her voice is, as always, incredible, like chocolate silk, or clear, running water. I enjoyed the rest of the songs as well as the two aforementioned, but those two are really something special that I haven't seen in her other collections.
How country grew out of folk music.......2000-05-01
This is a compilation of tracks recorded by Joan in the late sixties and early seventies. It includes a mixture of contemporary songs of the time and traditional songs.
When originally released as a vinyl double album, each of the four sides had a separate theme (Songs of the south, Love songs, Roots and Prospects, Old timey). Many of the old songs remind me of the Carter Family or Roy Acuff and fans of those artists will love these tracks.
Overall, this collection is far more impressive than most country albums by non-country artists and I finish with two thoughts. Why was Joan's version of Green Green Grass of Home left out? And is there any chance that any record company will put together an equivalent compilation by Judy Collins, who also recorded a number of country(ish) songs during her peak years?
wasted money.......1999-06-19
This was not what I expected -- although I loved her original renditions of the songs, this sounds like a canned karaoke version

Customer Reviews:
Classic album enhanced by two new songs.......2006-05-28
Although recorded in Nashville, this lovely album does not have an authentic country sound overall. It is more like her typical 1960s folk with a country infusion here and there. The songs include traditionals and gospel songs like Just A Closer Walk With Thee and Poor Wayfaring Stranger, a duet with her sister Mimi Farina, plus pop hits of the time like Green Green Grass Of Home and work from contemporary songwriters, like the Gram Parsons masterpiece Hickory Wind.
All the songs are memorable with a melancholy thread running through the album. The arrangements stick close to the originals but the fiddle, dobro and viola make some of the tracks quite special. The Jordannaires lend beautiful male backing vocals to Will The Circle Be Unbroken, whilst The Tramp On The Street has an additional verse co-written by Baez and Maynard Solomon. One of the highlights is the aforementioned duet with Mimi, in which there is a lovely harmonic interweaving of the voices in the chorus.
The lovely organ renders Just A Closer Walk With Thee quite stirring, whilst her version of Hickory Wind is also very soulful. The most country-sounding of the tracks is the uptempo My Home's Across The Blue Ridge Mountains. This reissue contains a live version of How Can I Miss You and the folk classic The Last Thing On My Mind. I would say this is an essential album for Baez fans, but it does not rank amongst the very best of her 1960s output.
The tracks on David's Album were recorded during the same sessions as her Dylan tribute Any Day Now, which is an absolute gem. With songs like I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine, Love Is Just A Four-Letter Word, the heart-breaking Walls Of Redwing, One Too Many Mornings, Boots Of Spanish Leather and Restless Farewell, it is a classic folk album of the 1960s. Get them both and play them back to back for a good dose of that 1960s Baez magic.

The power of a voice.......2000-10-01
I'm an atheist. But when I hear "The tramp on the street" or "Just a closer walk with you" from "DAVID'S ALBUM" I have a God and I can pray. Joan Baez's voice is a powerful message full of faith and hope.A perfect balance of sensous delicacy and strengh. Beautiful!

DAVID'S ALBUM was recorded during Joan's "Nashville years" (from 1968 - 73 she recorded almost exclusively in Music City), and while not her best album from this period (ONE DAY AT A TIME was a much stronger album), it nonetheless contained some thrilling musical moments. Her harmonies with her sister Mimi Farina on "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" are among the most beautiful sounds ever committed to record, and Gram Parsons' "Hickory Wind" has gone on to become a Baez standard. And Joan's liner note -- a tribute to her then husband who would soon be imprisoned for draft resistance -- are no less moving thirty-odd years later.
A Distinct, Wonderful Voice !.......2000-01-24
"Poor Wayfaring Stranger" - a song to be remembered through the decades !
LP originally released in 1969, when David, her husband was imprisoned for having refused to be drafted. In her own words, Joan dedicates this album to "all those who are locked up, that they might have the strength to act like free men, and not prisoners, and for all those on the outside, that they might have the strength to act like free men and not prisoners" !
Simple words, unforgettable melody easily unwinding, a feeling of melancholy and everlasting hope; Joan Baez - one of the most beautiful, warm, vibrant voices of all times !
