Beautiful album.......2007-03-08

i was pleasantly surprised! Beautiful songs and they are not stereotypical native american musc as on reviewer suggested. my toddler chills to the album before he goes to bed.

Like another reviewer stated, it sounds corny and fake. I must agree. Some of it is ok, but it sounds like commercialized North American Indian music, which I suppose it is.

Good, but Lisa Gerrard repeats herself.......2006-05-19

Dead Can Dance's former singer, Lisa Gerrard, sounds good (like she always does) on this album, yet she repeats herself, coming accross a LOT like she did in "Whale Rider". The oceanic-like quality to her music plays a central role in this soundtrack, and makes me a bit doubtful about future efforts, unless she begins to experiment a little more, like she did in her DCD days.

i heard two cuts from this album on a recent 'music from the hearts of space' broadcast last december. needless to say, lisa gerrard's vocals, and here combined with various indigenous north american arrangements, are stellar. i recommend this for those who are looking for ambient sounds to wind the day down. a subtle, powerful, modern collection of soundtrack compositions that is rooted in tradition. quite nice and i do plan on catching the short film next time i'm in DC.

Corny, fake sounding Native American music.......2005-12-17

I am a soundtrack fan, love a good soundtrack, and found this to be incoherent...the music sounded stereotypical and unoriginal. I love Lisa Gerard's contributions to the Gladiator soundtrack but here, her voice is lost in the music. I find this cd to be kind of irritating to listen to, rather than beautiful. I'm trading it in at the local used cd store asap.

Custer LaRue is my all-time favorite.......2001-08-30

As I have said before (and will no doubt say again), one cannot go wrong in purchasing an album on the Dorian label. This disc is further justification for me calling them my favorite record label. Brian Levine and all the folks at Dorian deserve a big thanks from every true lover of music.

In spite of what I said about Claire Gignac in my review of "Les Chants d'Eros," Custer LaRue is still my favorite female singer. "Amazing Grace" makes my admiration for her even greater than it was before. She is truly great here.

The songs themselves are wonderful material. A few of them are still common repertoire in some church settings. Most of the songs have become obscure over the years--only finding resurrection in LaRue's performance.

My favorite songs here are "Wondrous Love," "Hold On," and the title track. It is a sign of a great album that is so hard to choose a favorite on "Amazing Grace."

I love the early instruments used in this recording. It puts a new interpretive spin on the songs. The Baltimore Consort are a dazzling collection of artists who are each outstanding players in their own right--the real miracle is how they play so seamlessly together. I look forward to more music from this great ensemble.

In the meantime, I give "Amazing Grace" a full-fledged recommendation.

Awesome voice.......2001-08-18

Custer Larue has a wonderfully light, pure soprano that is well augmented by the various early instruments of the Baltimore Consort, and her unaccompanied rendition of "Amazing Grace" gives me goosebumps! The selections are not "preachy" religion and therefore very listenable. LaRue reminds me of the early Joan Baez; no, she is even better. Heard a selection from this recording on NPR, bought the CD and now want to own everything she ever recorded! A very special, talented group of musicians and Custer LaRue's voice is unforgettable.

Custer LaRue as classical folk musician.......2001-06-10

This album reminds me of Maddy Prior's album of West Gallery music; it does not remind me of the various current releases of early American religious music by choral groups. This is an album that will appeal to folk musicians with a love of the ballad. It also appeals to those interested in lute, bandora, stings etc.; their accompaniment to LaRue's voice is absolutely inspired.

This peculiar, rather warped feature is a product of the highly original mind of the late "musician-thinker" Sun Ra (the former Herman "Sonny" Blount, an accomplished jazz pianist and bandleader). The 82-minute, 1974 film melds effects that are straight out of '50s Japanese sci-fi, politics reflecting '60s racial radicalism, and the overall vibe of '70s blaxploitation films, with some African-Egyptian mythology thrown in for good measure. It isn't exactly a masterpiece of cinema; the production values are mediocre, the story is thin (Ra, who co-wrote, portrays an alien who offers oppressed African Americans the opportunity to seek their "alter-destiny" in outer space; complications ensue before his spaceship departs with true believers on board), the acting amateurish. But it's entertaining--Ra's array of costumes (especially his headgear) is impressive, and we do at least get a taste of his Intergalactic Solar Arkestra's heady brew of avant-garde jazz. --Sam Graham

DESCRIPTION:Science fiction, blaxploitation, cosmic free-jazz and radical race politics combine when Sun Ra returns to earth in his music-powered space ship to battle for the future of the black race and offer an "alter-destiny" to those who would join him. Intentionally created as an homage to the low-budget science fiction films of the 50's and 60's, SPACE IS THE PLACE became a visual embodiment of Sun Ra's Afro-Egyptian myth of salvation in outer space. The special effects, outrageous plot line and apocalyptic message harmonize with the otherworldly score and a climactic live performance by one of the most innovative and profound groups in jazz history. After having traveled through space in a yellow spaceship propelled by music, Sun Ra finds a planet he believes could serve as a new home for the black race. Returning to earth, he lands in Oakland, California circa 1972 and has to battle The Overseer, played by Ray Johnson (from 1971's DIRTY HARRY), a supernatural villain exploiting the black people. The Overseer, the FBI, and NASA -- who are after Ra's Black Space Program -- attempt to assassinate Ra, who escapes into space with his followers before the destruction of Earth. Cosmic blaxploitation cum sociological critique, SPACE IS THE PLACE defies categorization. It is at once a platform for Sun Ra's radical racial philosophies, an indictment of the government's policies in Vietnam-era U.S., cult camp flick, sci-fi movie and concert film with unforgettable performances by the Intergalactic Solar Arkestra. Since its extremely limited release in 1974 -- the film played very briefly in San Francisco and New York -- SPACE IS THE PLACE has become an underground legend spoken about but never seen, and if so, in poorly dubbed bootlegs or in the severely adulterated 1992 VHS version.

Space is Not the place.......2007-07-21

Appropriately named a blaxploitation film, Space is the Place does more harm than good in promoting "blackness", in spite of its attempts to weave in sophisticated technological and mythic themes. It is an arduous task finding positive representations and ideas amidst the white noise of drugs, bitches, pimps, and, well, noise. Ironically, part of the process is not understanding, as finally clarified in Sun Ra's concert approaching the end of the film.

The good versus evil, religious, and Egyptian themes are relatively transparent, and the exclusive application to blacks (though strangely only to American blacks), is a reaction to the same monopolization on the part of whites. There is a mythical garden, an Eden-like place, an ark in the form of a space ship, and immortality in space/heaven, all reserved for blacks. Rather than promoting equality and peaceful coexistence, the message is one of segregation and near mutual annihilation. This could be because the divide between blacks and whites seems wide and hopelessly irreparable, or because blacks themselves are unable to rise up out of their oppressed state without outside or divine assistance. In all these cases thus far, the militant pro-black attitude actually agrees a great deal with white racism, promoting segregation and stating that blacks bear a great responsibility for their own plight, and cannot get their acts together.

This negative presentation of disenfranchised groups continues in the hyper-sexualization of black women (and white women), seen in the whores, stories of abused women, told by their men and pimps, nurses, and numerous silent women riding in cars. Another notable phenomenon is the use of exploiting women to elevate one's status, especially if the woman is white. This implies not only that the assignment of female is even more subjugating than blackness, and that white women are a greater prize than black ones: the overseer's choice woman is white, and he first shows sexual interest in the white nurse, who happens to bring her black friend. Lines like "...do what your daddy says, and everything will be fine--it's better than shooting up on the stoop, isn't it?" both deprive women of the ability to make choices, and imply their predisposition to drugs and catering to their carnal instincts; this resembles the antiquated, racist, white perceptions of blacks, this time transferred to women. The line spoken by the pimp, who defends the fact that he beat his woman to the point of hospitalization, says "bitches need it". Somehow this man receives salvation in the end, but why, we never know.

The alternating predatory or impotent black male persists throughout Space is the Place. The best example of this is in the devil-like Overseer, and his pathetic (half-white?) assistant. It could be, however, that the impotent part of him comes from that inner whiteness in his personality, since the two NASA men are unable to perform in the same brothel on the same day.

The concert is the moment where Sun Ra explains his philosophy. Throughout the film, he establishes music as a balancing, mathematical, sophisticated force that can power anything from spaceships to an entire race. It can cause chaos, revolution, and salvation, so the fact that Sun Ra uses his unusual form of jazz to spread his message is expected. He asks, at the end of the film, for blind trust, for understanding that blacks are "the pattern and spirit of man", he asks them to not be afraid and to embrace their ignorance as their salvation. It is an ambiguous ending resulting in the salvation of whores, teenage hoodlums who save Sun Ra from the NASA men, a pimp who abuses women, and the black half of Jimmy Fey, helper of the Overseer.

If nothing else, this film may be good for a laugh as some charmingly dated things can be, but whether in its own context of the time or now, it is offensive to the mind and ear. Best seen with a group of drunk friends, I would imagine.

pretty good.......2006-03-31

this film is pretty nice but not nearly as great as the documentary A Joyful Noise. I highly recommend purchasing A Joyful Noise first because it provides a deeper look into Sun Ra.

More Archetypal Than Archestral.......2005-05-25

I picked up this curious period piece of psychedelic, indie-fueled moviemaking some time ago. Sorry now I waited so long to view it. It's a delightful combination of '70's pop culture, science fiction fantasy, Sun Ra musical storytelling through his Inter-Galactical Outer Space Archestra, and black pride allegory that manages to be quite on point.

Initially, I was too fascinated by the imagery and music to think much about any message. In retrospect, Sun Ra is a spiritual being from a space colony playing chess with an earthly demonic pimpmaster for big stakes: the souls of exploited people, black (mostly) and white. The pimpmaster also plays the system, selling his black brothers and sisters to addiction and prostitution for his own pleasure, trapping them in an oppressive, seemingly inescapable existence. A third main character is the media commentator--Jimmy Fay--who seems to be a shill for the pimpmaster and his worldly culture but eventually comes around (perhaps more John the Baptist than Jesus Christ) to sharing the enlightened message of Sun Ra, joining those who are delivered from bondage. All ends happily in a Sun Ra space colony of resurrected, reborn black/white humanity.

Even if you don't buy the Biblical allegory, it's still a cool trip, with a bit of harmless nudity and violence for good measure (just like Cecil De Mille).

What a bizarre delight!.......2004-10-07

What a simultaneously hysterical with fits of lucidity presentation! The running battle between Ra and "Overseer" is a great subtext. Gives some insights into the man, somewhat in spite of Sun Ra's best efforts to stay a "Mystery". The cheesey effects and over the top acting has to be viewed as an ultimate camp cult movie. A JOYFUL NOISE is almost as bizarre, but probably more accessible. Most of the charm is that you can't tell whether he is plain nuts or goofing with you. I understand this was very calculated and intentional on his part.

Parliament/Funkadelic owe more to this guy than I think anybody realizes. I don't know if George Clinton has ever acknowledged his debt to Sun Ra, at least conceptually, for doing the full blown conceptual thing decades before him.

Composer Leroy Shields played piano, led radio orchestras, penned semiclassical works, and, for a few years in the 1930s, wrote music for Hollywood. The Beau Hunks, a Dutch ensemble, have lovingly reconstructed Shield's score for Our Relations, a 1936 comedy starring Laurel and Hardy. Members of the Beau Hunks, joined by the Metropole Orchestra, perform the original sheet music for the film on this finely packaged and annotated CD. If you're a fan of old movies and some of this disc sounds vaguely familiar, there's a reason. Back in the '30s music editors cut up recordings of Shields's original score into manageable bits; some of the resulting parts were then used in Our Relations and other films as well. On another note, it turns out that Shields's music can be tough to play. According to the album's liner notes, the longest track, "On the Dock," prompted Jan Stulen, the conductor on these sessions, to say, "Compared to this, Mahler's Ninth is like a flute sonata." --Fred Cisterna

Another winner from the Beau Hunks. if you like Laurel and Hardy and like film music, this is a must-have album. An added bonus: a terrific brochure and history by Laurel and Hardy scholar Richard Bann.

You can't go wrong with Biafra's fantastic sense of humor, especially in conjunction with his ever-scathing political commentary.
This is a highly listenable and entertaining set of cds, which is not to undermine their importance. They are challenging and thought-provoking, addressing contemporary social and political issues, and weave together a perfect blend of satire and seriousness.

The most economics-oriented of Biafra's albums.......2004-12-25

Jello Biafra pontificates on a number of issues that I personally find important: the need for teenagers and young adults to have free access to entertainment, music and media of their choice; the banality and anti-aestheticism of "mainstream suburbia" and the suit-and-tie, Christmas-shopping, pro-sports mentality fed to us in the media (that's how their corporate sponsors make money after all).

But here Biafra is much more concerned with the economics playing behind the scenes. Rather than "whine" about Tipper Gore, the PMRC and their efforts to deny people under a certain age certain types of albums (and movies, video games, possibly even live concerts), here Biafra goes into a much more powerful threat to freedom and democracy: corporate power and the DE FACTO censorship and authoritarianism it brings. You could best think of this album as a rebuttal to conservative economist Milton Friedman's book CAPITALISM AND FREEDOM.

This album was recorded in late 1997/early 1998, the era of anti-gang paranoia, the Newt Gingrich regime, NAFTA, drug wars, welfare reform, and Wall Street uber-alles. Biafra clearly points out President Clinton's repeated concessions to the conservative right, not just the Wall Street right but also cultural reactionaries (one of which would have been first lady had the Supreme Court not handed the 2000 pres election to Bush). This frustration over pro-corporate, pro-suburbia, anti-marijuana, anti-musical freedom "liberal" Democrats was certainly at least part of the fuel behind Ralph Nader's 2000 campaign.

Biafra points out, very honestly, that the corporate media deliberately blames society's problems on everything except the real cause (how screwed up our economic system is (this is a verbatim quote)), which not only unnecessarily scapegoats innocent people like Marilyn Manson and divides the nation among race and culture lines, but assures that the real problems will never be solved.

Of course, to inspire the people for social change, he also gives examples of how Russians and Eastern Europeans overthrew their communist-by-name-only regimes and set up democracies run, in some cases, by rock musicians! Granted, neocapitalist fervor has been pushed too hard on the ex-"communist" countries, but the basic idea of a mass of people overthrowing a corrupt and elitist political regime is definitely something that a democratic socialist like myself can wholeheartedly support!

After listening to this album you too will be inspired to renounce the capitalist economic ideology and dream of the day when America will experience a general strike. Even if you don't agree with Biafra's (or my) quasi-socialist philosophy of wealth, work and property, you will be forced to admit that America is going down the tubes and that "It's the economic system, [...]"

Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill the poor........1999-01-11

If you didn't get the summary and for some reason actually took it literally, then you've probably never listenned to the Dead Kennedys. Well, ex-Kennedy lead singer Jello Biafra has taken his razor blade-like social awareness and criticism to spoken word. You won't believe what you learn, and worst of all you'll never be able to pledge allegiance again(OH NO!!). Buy this. Yeah, yeah. I know that's all you hear every evening as you vegetate in front of the new opiate of the masses, i mean television, but this might actually wake you up. Besides, if you've found your way to this review than you must have some interest in Biafra or the Dead Kennedys. If you just stumbled upon this as a poor innocent good citizen, well, good. You need this. It's like Viagra for the brain. Arm the homeless!

Great Single.......2002-05-11

When I first heard "Relations" I thought it was the lead vocalist from Ace Of Base who had gone out on her own, I was wrong. This girl is a cutie and she has a that foreign accent which is easily detected in this song. It will be interesting if Erika turns out to be a one-hit wonder.

Charles Lloyd issued a series of albums in the 1990s with pianist Bobo Stenson and other Swedish players that were quiet to the point of somnolent. On this album, the presence of drummer Billy Hart elevates the pace and intensity, and so does the vigor of Lloyd's playing, which grows stronger in all ways. Ironically, he is far more accomplished than he was in the late 1960s when, in the throes of flower power, he won popular acclaim that was uncommonly broad for a jazz performer. His sax, stylistically and emotionally multihued, harks to Coltrane but rarely leans on him. Lloyd also makes judicious contributions on flute, all splendidly deep-toned and deeply felt. Stenson is ever dependable in support, coming to life when the opportunity presents itself. And Hart consistently kicks the music along. --Peter Monaghan

Donýt overlook this wonderful Album.......2003-01-14

Since no other reviews exist, I felt obligated to say something about this terrific album.
This is an up tempo musical experience presented by Charles Lloyd.

The set starts out at a brisk pace with "Piercing the Veil". Charles puts in some top notch sax playing here. "Little Peace" slows down and finds Charles on flute and what a beautiful tune this is. "Thelonious Theonlyus" follows at a quicker pace with some great vamping and soloing by Charles on sax and Bobo Stenson on piano. "Cape to Cairo Suite" starts with an Anders Jormin bass solo. The rest of the band then comes in. Charles sax darts around with the rest of the band before they all settle down and find the melody. A wonderful piano solo is contained in this tune along with some high energy sax playing.

"Evanstide" starts out with some beautiful piano playing at a slow pace. The bass and drums walk in to support the musical effort. Charles is the last to join. This is a beautiful tune that develops into a mid tempo pace. "All my Relations" starts out with a sax and drum exchange. About 4 ½ minutes into the tune the bass player joins in. Another couple of minutes later the piano joins and Charles steps away momentarily to give the band solo space. "Hymne to the Mother" begins mysteriously with some piano (I think) and drum/cymbal work. The bass joins in with some wonderful but brief out front playing. Then in walks Charles to communicate his feelings for this song. The set concludes with a brief solo song that finds Charles on Chinese Oboe.

Most of the tunes found on this album are up tempo. The entire band is in top notch form. Bobo Stenson puts in a fine performance on piano (quite breathtaking). Anders Jormin on bass is exciting and really makes the bass walk along and sing. Billy Hart on drums is full of energy on this session.

As usual, the recording quality is stellar. Be sure to pick up this album. It may be eight years old (released in 1995) but it should not to be overlooked. This is a "must have" Charles Lloyd album. The music is melodic but also includes a couple of more adventuresome tunes. This is exciting jazz.

Solid, Professional Acoustic Folk-Rock.......2006-05-14

A solid, professional effort. She offers appropriate twee folk-rock vocals to a solid collection of songs. However, there's nothing that stands out in particular - her voice is not very distinctive - neither warm nor harsh. Her interpretations are all fine but nothing unexpected, new or interesting - all pleasant and nice. So, as long as your expectations aren't too high - it's a fine, solid and consistent sounding effort.
