Album Description
Missy higgins kept a very low public profile in 2006 but that doesn't mean she hasn't been keeping busy. In fact with her typical lack of fuss and fanfare the former triple j unearthed winner spent the second half of last year in los angeles recording here brand new album 'on a clear night'. The highly anticipated release is currently scheduled for the end of april in australia. The album was recorded with acclaimed producer mitchell froom who helmed the recent finn brothers cd and the first 3 crowded house albums plus discs for such acclaimed singer-songwriters as ron sexsmith, elvis costello and suzanne vega. The first song to be lifted from the album is 'steer' - a positive and life affirming song which missy previewed live during the us and uk touring she did in mid-2006. Missy's debut cd, 'the sound of white', remains in the australian top 40 over two years after its release. The album is now certified 9 times platinum and is one of the highest selling australian albums of all time!

Customer Reviews:
Higgins second album shines brightly for most, but barely gives off a spark (for me).......2007-06-16
As an Australian, it seems part of the culture to stand up for and admire Missy Higgins. I have yet to meet someone in real life and not from the internet that dislikes Missy's music.
So, I have to give this cd a one star rating simply because the songs all sound the same apart from '100 Round The Bends' and 'Steer' which are the greatest songs on the album.
Her lyrics you can't deny are beautiful and meaningful, and her voice registers much emotion as she sings, but it's just not a very interesting listen...
The songs on 'A Clear Night' which are overly mellow and slow are not particularly catchy or memorable unlike the song 'Ten Days' in her previous effort, which has just enough beauty to push through the barriers of bland and have a place in listeners who usually wouldn't listen to this kind of music's heart.
There's no doubt Missy Higgins seems like a lovely girl who cares about her music not being commercial and sticks up for causes like vegetarianism and anti-war, so this isn't a review having a go at her, but when it comes to her music, you'll either be into it straight away or not. It's not really an album that grows as such...
I strongly recommend 'The Sound Of White' album if you're a newcomer into the world of Missy Higgins - it's just an all-around better album.
Missy Higgins - never understood the hype about her music and never will, sorry. Honestly, Amiel Daemion, I believe is a much worthier singer to be placed on a pedastal and worshipped musically with this category of soft, almost acoustic music. However she doesn't get the attention she deserves, sweeter and less gritter voice, too.
And that's my review!
On a Clear Night...dont compare it with The Sound of White...you will only be disappointed........2007-06-02
Well I really thought that this album would blow "The Sound of White" away before I heard it. The truth is, it doesn't. This is because it is not in the same field as TSOW.
Her previous album was much more piano driven. This is much more upbeat guitar driven. At first listen, it was a major disappointment, but after a few full listens I can confidently say I love this album more than her first.
The songs have their own identity and I dont mind listening to any of them.. well maybe just 1 track (Secret), but even so I love all of these tracks.
Where I Stood is a track which probably mirrors her previous album more than any other, it is a great song which features more piano than anything. 9/10
100 Round The Bends is a much more upbeat song driven by funky guitars with great lyrics. A great upbeat track. 8.5/10
Steer, another guitar driven track..the 1st single. I loved it from the first listen and I still love it. Uplifting and positive. 9/10
Sugarcane goes back into the piano with light guitar and it is a pretty song. Deep lyrics and a pleasure to listen to at anytime. 8/10
Secret is a track which I dont love, but dont hate. I can tolerate it but it isnt my favourite. Its driven by guitar and its really bluesy. 7/10
Warm Whispers is a huge favourite of mine. I love the simplicity of it and the great lyrics. An absolute gem. 10/10
The Wrong Girl has to be my 2nd least favourite track, it is just flat to me, nothing different or unique about this track. 6/10
Angela is an awesome song! It is really folksy and really takes you away with its enchanting simple country music and pretty lyrics. Love it. 10/10
Peachy is a great upbeat guitar driven song with great angry lyrics and with real emotion put into it. Another favourite of mine. 10/10
Going North sounds like something off Gilmore Girls to me! haha its a great Australian-esque country-ish song with simple guitars and backing vocals with some other guy near the end which fits in great with the track. This album is getting better and better! 9/10
Forgive Me, wow this is the simplest a song can get. The term simple, yet effective applies 150% to this track. With a simple guitar and eerie echo, this track gleams with powerful vocals and emotive lyrics. This album couldn't have closed with a better track. I WANT MORE! 9.5/10
So incase you couldnt tell, the 2nd half of the album really hit it with me and I truly believe after a few listens you will love this album and appreciate all the things going for it like the music, lyrics and vocals.
Pick this up. The only reason people are so majorly disappointed by this is because they are directly comparing it to The Sound of White and not judging it individually as its own body of work. Please try it out, you are missing out on some true gems!

Impossible to fault.......2007-05-29
I really thought Aussie singer/songwriter Missy Higgins might have a struggle on her hands to better her excellent 2004 debut The Sound Of White. But with her second release, On A Clear Night, she may well have done just that. Her latest batch of songs are, in a word - gorgeous, and their appeal grows with each listen. Opener 'Where I Stood' is an immediate highlight, a song which shivers with emotion, pulling the listener in with a trademark Higgin's tail of lost love/lost identity over a beguiling, yearning melody. Other standouts are the single 'Steer', the breathlessly beautiful 'Warm Whispers' and the 'The Wrong Girl' which seems to have set up permanent residence in my brain - not that I mind one bit. I've only been in possession of On A Clear Night for a couple of weeks, but I sense already, that I'm gonna keep coming back to this album time and time again. Missy Higgins has again shown us just what a genuine talent she is - one of the most gifted and luminescent singer/songwriters to have graced the scene in some time.
Beautiful Music from an Outstanding Singer/Songwriter.......2007-05-12
Entering at #1 on the Australian charts upon its release in April 2007, "On A Clear Night" is Missy Higgins' second studio album and a thoroughly enjoyable follow up to her highly successful debut, "The Sound of White". A more tightly packaged collection of material than the latter, "On A Clear Night" contains the same perfect combination of velvet vocals, emotive lyrics, top-quality songwriting and production that her debut did. The lead single "Steer", a #1 single in Australia, is catchy and engaging. But there is much better on this album. "Where I Stood", "Sugarcane" and "Warm Whispers" are beautiful and timeless songs that demonstrate the abundance of musical talent which Missy Higgins possesses - these three songs alone qualify "On A Clear Night" as a truly quality recording. The more acoustic tracks "Secret" and "Forgive Me", and the folk-like "Going North", are additional bonuses that add to an already fine collection of original tracks. Along with the spectacularly gifted Tina Arena, Missy Higgins is an outsanding ambassador for Australian music at the global level and she deservedly has a long recording future ahead of her. 5/5.
Another Great Record. .......2007-05-09
Missy Higgins is a fantastic singer and songwriter, which is just as evident on her second record as it was on her first "The Sound of White." It will be all but impossible for her to match the hype and buzz surrounding her freshman record, but in my eyes the quality of "On a Clear Night" is right up there with it.
The album is less piano driven then "The Sound of White" a fact that Missy says is due to her constant touring behind the success of the first album. She says that it's harder to write songs on the piano when you are on the road, so she stuck to writing on the guitar, but the songs don't suffer because of it. They may sound a bit different then the tracks on her first record, but it's in a good way.
The first single from "On a Clear Night" is "Steer", which is a very upbeat, positive song which talks about taking control of your life. Other tracks like "Going North" and "100 Round the Bend" also focus on themes of empowerment and destiny all the while featuring toe tapping rhythms and masterful playing.
The record has some darker, more haunting and serious tracks like "Forgive Me" and "Where I Stood" and "Secret." These tracks are not all autobiographical, and Missy says she has taken leave of making all of her songs sound as if they are her inner feelings yearning to break free. She creates characters and makes them the star of her songs, like in "Angela" which was inspired by seeing an old black and white photo of Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable. She thought that despite Vivian's apparent submissiveness and dependence on Clark, it was in face Vivian that was in control the whole time. Missy says she knows a lot of women like that, and so the song was born.
In the end this record is in fact different from her first, but it's indicative of a person who's grown in her craft and, in my mind at least, keeps getting better. Her beautiful voice is still there, complete with her Aussie accent, and the production is top notch as well. This makes for a fantastic listen; if you buy it you won't be sorry.

Best Music Ever for Home Wedding.......2007-07-20
The tape consists of 25 traditional wedding songs played by big orchestras; the music was beautiful and made a small ceremony into a special, unforgettable ceremony.
Excellent resource for wedding planners.......2007-04-05
I work regularly with people planning church weddings who want the service to be dignified, traditional and formal. Often they have "ear memory" of music they've heard in other weddings, but no idea about its composer or title. This CD is the best compilation I've found of music that fits those requirements. Selections include great music and performances make it easy to imagine how they would sound in a particular church or other setting. Includes works by Protestant, Catholic and secular composers.
Great item!.......2007-03-29
Great CD! Perfect when planning your wedding music. There are a variety of songs from various composers.

This CD was inexpensive, and provided a great way to preview songs for my wedding. The CD had a good song selection. My fiance and I were able to get a better idea of how the songs would be at our wedding. Definitely an inexpensive tool that is worthwhile.

My daughter had to move her wedding 3 weeks before the event and the music she had arranged could not be there. I purchased this CD and we were thrilled with the price, the selections on the cd and how quickly it arrived. Thanks for providing the music for a beautiful wedding.

We wonder after those who saw new wonders in the world!.......2007-07-23
Luis Mejia (son) - After a strongly critisized self-titled debut album, Lifeson and Lee decide to bring drummer Neil Peart; who also becomes the inmediate lyricist, adopting a more literal and mature composition very different from their debut album. Fortunately, Peart becomes one of the greatest drummers in the world, which also contributes to Rush rising fame.
Still, Fly By Night keeps a great similarity with the debut album, just with certain lyrical and compositional differences, its an album were Rush still tries to fit in their own sound, possessing an obvious aspiration of hard rock, more associated with Led Zeppelin, which created some of their worst critics in their further career, but definitively its an underrated album. Fly By Night is one of Rush albums which has some of the most memorable, catchy and fresh songs (one of my personal favorites), having a songs' structure very comfortable and rythmical, which are very comprehensible and recognizable among the hard rock genre. Even then, they were noticed some progressive inclinations and more original mellodies.
Within the songs all tracks are very alike in their style; Anthem is a very famous song, my personal favorite, which possesses not a high level of complexity or ambitious composition; its the fine mellodies and stunning performance applied in the song. Beneath, Between & Behind is an enjoyable track but not too much to say about it; it doesn't possess any notable aspect. Bytor And The Snow Dog is a key song were is revealed their interest in progressive rock, apart from being the most complex track (also 9 min long) it possesses the greatest performance in the whole album. Fly By Night is the title track which is very mellodic and with soft inclinations; very enjoyable for stepping out of the hard rock pattern in the album. Making Memories is one of those typical melancholic ballads talking about life in the road as a rock band; not too much of a ballad, still I always associate Journey's song Faithfully when I hear to it. Rivendell is a song refering about a town of the same name named in J.R.R. Tolkien novel "The Hobbit". Best I Can is another famous track, a little blues-like and very different from later Rush works; one of their most original and experimental songs. In The End is the last track of the album composed by Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee, is a good track, not too much notorious but an enjoyable way to finnish hearing this great album.
Within the artists Geddy Lee's vocal hability and bass are in their best period, still being a young and potent voice. Alex Lifeson's guitar is in a great performance but I consider it to be better performed in the debut album. Neil Peart, being his first album with Rush, gives an extremely potent and fearful touch playing the drums in one of the finest ways; this is an album where he makes one of his nicest performances in his whole career, and his lyrical hability of writting is a much more literal and cultural composition, also another aspect of Rush interests in progressive rock.
The album's artwork (well, the cover) its a beautiful and atractive cover that creates a great interest among buyers; although most of Rush 70's albums possess this kind of artwork, its most notorious in their albums 2112 and Hemispheres.
In conclussion the album starts a long path onto music fame and recognizion, its the start of a classic all time lineup with strong aspirations and a bright future. I liked it very much, so enjoy!
Rush Takes A Drummer And Heads North!.......2007-07-09
Right away you can hear the contribution that Neil Peart makes as he enters the drummer's seat on Rush's second album. Gone is the mediocre typical rock drummer John Rutsey. Here to stay is the lyricist/drummer that would help to make Rush one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Thanks to Neil the lyrics move away from the Ooh Baby mentality of their debut album into newer, more thought-provoking directions. Let's take a look at the songs, shall we?
Anthem - Straight up rocker with very cool lyrics. Geddy wails and the groove is laid down. Tight, short, pumping. One of the great old Rush tunes.
Best I Can - A leftover from the first Rush album? Maybe. This was written by Geddy alone. It rocks, but it misses Neil's literate touch.
Beneath, Between & Behind - A great song written by Alex and Neil. Alex throws in all the licks here. Geddy belts out the lyrics with passion.
By-Tor & The Snow Dog - The first of many multi-part songs. This is the first glimpse of things to come. This song grooves so f*cking much! An all-time Rush great.
Fly By Night - A signature Rush song of the first order. This, along with Finding My Way, In The Mood, and Working Man would remain Rush staples for a long time to come. Excellent!
Making Memories - One of the first songs I ever learned on acoustic guitar. This song is killer. Kick out the jams.
Rivendell - The soft spot on the album. The nod to Tolkein is cool but this song drags.
In The End - This is a good song but it, like Rivendell, drags. Another Geddy/Alex penned tune that could be a holdover from the first album.
Overall, as the band is adapting to the inclusion of Neil Peart very well, the Zeppelin-influenced sound would fall to the wayside for the Rush signature sound. Even though their next album would blow up in their faces, Rush would continue to grow by leaps and bounds in the following years. Fly By Night is a great stepping stone album. A definite must for old fans! Newer Rush fans might want to start a little up the line at 2112 or Permanent Waves.
Dig it!
Rush at their most Rocking!!!.......2007-06-01
This album at least deserves 4 1/2 stars. Anthem is one of Rush's most rocking older tunes. I absolutely love Best I Can; it's a simple song about playing rock and roll and having a good time. It doesn't get any better than that! Beneath, Between, and Behind also totally rocks! And who doesn't like By Tor & the Snow Dog? - talk about an epic masterpiece. In The End is one of Rush's simplest tunes, but it absolutely rocks! I even love Making Memories where they break out the acoustic guitars. The only track that doesn't do much for me is Rivendell, but there's one of those mellow filler tunes on every early Rush album. Okay, I realize this isn't a real cerebral synopsis of this album and I doubt anyone will find it helpful. I've basically just used the word "rocking" several times to describe this collection of songs, but that's the beauty of Fly By Night; it's just Rush rocking out and having a great time. This album is the bridge between the early Zeppelin inspired stuff from the first album and the really prog heavy stuff that would characterize their work in the late seventies and early eighties. Don't get me wrong, I love the more serious thematic elements of the later albums, but this is Rush just letting loose which is so refreshing to hear. Geddy's vocals are in top form on this album, especially on Anthem. You've still got the heady lyrics by Peart, but there's also those romping tunes about just rocking out! This album has it all. It's kind of the adolescent phase of the band where they were maturing musically and trying to find their sound. I know their later works are superior to FBN in many ways, but I can't deny that I still enjoy listening to this album more than most.
rush's sophmore effort.......2007-05-29
Rush always has variety and this one without a doubt does. From
hard to soft rock with grace. Let yourself go into the music and
Fly By Night. Lyrics and musicianship will more than please any fan.
Rush.......2007-05-12
I am used to listening to Rush in their older years but this is one of their earlier albums. despite the fact that Geddy Lee's voice could go extremely high back and I'm used to the newer stuff they are still freakin' awesome.

Desert Island Disc!.......2007-06-20
This sacd is positively stunning. I am young. I was raised on gizmos, gadgets and hi-tech this and that...and for the life of me I can't understand how these engineers back in the 50's and 60's produced such astoundingly detailed recordings. With two or three mics for the hall and some tube equipment and wham...there you have it...a recording of impressively powerful pieces of music with enough separation and detail within the mix to keep the listener busy for hours and hours on end. That and the emotional wallop packed by this recording is second to none. Even if you have copies aplenty of Pictures, or Night on..., such as I do myself, please do not hesitate to pick up this recording as it is worth every dime. If you are looking for an interesting counterpoint to Reiner's reading of Pictures or Night pick of Jose Serebrier's recording on Naxos.
Great way to exercise.......2007-06-13
Such great music. Exercise and listening
to this one is a great combination.
Time seems to fly by and before you know
it. Times up!
Wow!.......2007-04-02
How can something older than me sound so good? The recording is top notch. Dont be fooled into thinking it is "just stereo", the ambience of symphony hall comes thru as though it were recorded in surround. Exquisite detail and perfect tempo. Timpani has realistic impact. And all the other music with Pictures makes this a real bargain!
Strauss and Mussorgsky.......2007-03-24
They sound good, without the 'edge' often associated with CDs. CDs are a Fourier Transform of the analog source - that is to say a subset of it.
Hybrid SACD Mussorgsky: Pirctures at an Exhibition, Night on Bald Mountain.......2007-01-14
Great value. Great performances. On my krell sacd player, I found small differences between the SACD layer and the regular. The recordings are outstanding. Consider the price and that this is a 2 lp set, this is a deal.

The party line on most Windham Hill products seems to be that it's either the greatest stuff since wave machines, or that it all sounds alike. On a Starry Night, with its collection of world songs and reputable artists such as Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and others, does lean toward a seamlessly understated, homogeneous quality that is broken only occasionally by Bobby McFerrin's piece and a couple of others. That said, there can hardly be a more mellow or sonorous album of kid's music anywhere. Starry Night could calm a nursery with no nurses; why, it could even soothe the pained yelps at the dog pound--and turn a freeway full of bumper-to-bumper sour pusses into pussycats. Effective? You've heard of mind control, haven't you? --Martin Keller

Starry Night A+++.......2007-07-29
I got this for my shower and I absolutely love it!! My son has listened to it every night since he was born, he is now almost 21 months and still it is part of his bedtime routine!!!! It is very different from the traditional lullabyes- we love it and have put it in the can't live without it category.
Soothing, calming and still works after 11 years!.......2007-05-09
I bought this for my newborn daughter and she has fallen asleep to this just about every night of her life. In particular, we enjoy the 2 Brazilian songs as I am Portuguese (born there, raised here) and it's immensely enjoyable hearing songs in my native tongue as well as other languages. I have gifted this to several expectant parents and everyone loves it as much as I do. I highly recommend this CD.
Wonderful product.......2007-03-08
The songs on this CD are soothing and fantastic. My son loved them!
Good for babies, but a little depressing for adults........2007-02-12
The music is all good, but several of the songs are eerily reminiscent of the Schindler's List soundtrack.
highly recommended.......2006-12-30
we used this before our first arrived (to acquaint her with the music and hopefully create a positive association for her) and played it every night as part of her bed time routine. i fell asleep to the music as well as i could hear it on the monitor from her room. i can't describe how much i loved listening to the tracks and how good i feel about the success of our nightly routine. we keep the music on the ipod for "sleepy music" while traveling in the car. my now 4 year old daughter with "request" the CD when she is tired! i often give this as a baby shower gift.

Amazon.com essential recording
Sarah Brightman's career was launched by her success in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, so it's no surprise to hear the soprano paying homage to the composer on this disc. Really a Brightman best-of, the album includes the Phantom theme (a duet with Michael Crawford), the light-opera fare of "Chanson D'enfance" from Aspects of Love, "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" from Evita, and numerous other Lloyd Webber classics. Throughout, Brightman's diminutive voice lends a fragility to these musical theater tunes that you'll either love or despise. On Evita's "Another Suitcase, Another Hall" and Cats' "Memory," she literally chirps through the vocal lines. No matter. The growing legion of Brightman fans wouldn't have it any other way. --Jason Verlinde

The Andrew Lloyd Weber Collection.......2007-05-12
Sarah Brightman sings in good form classic songs and does a great job!!
Andrew Lloyd Webber .......2007-02-12
Excellent Broadway music--a true master. Sing along or just listen. First heard her on PBS.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection.......2007-01-05
Sarah Brightman has always been a favorite of mine, and this CD is outstanding. The duet with Jose Carreras (Friends for Life) is especially good--worth buying the CD for that song alone.
The Best You'll See from Sarah.......2006-09-09
This CD is - wow! I have so much to say about it and so little time! This album features three pieces from "The Phantom of the Opera" - Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, The Music of the Night, and The Phantom of the Opera theme. They're all beautiful. The second piece on the album is "Unexpected Song". It has beautiful octaves and orchastrations. Chanson d'Efance is an amazing French piece with vibrato - and then some. I forgot to mention that there is another piece from The Phantom of the Opera - All I Ask of You - except that the song is not sung by the original cast from the musical. The next few pieces are fairly decent, until you get to Memory from Cats. WOW - is it spectacular! Then we get to two other pieces from Cats - Gus: The Theater Cat and Macavity: The Mystery Cat. Gus is a song that just tells about a cat and his history. A man speaks the lines that Gus would say in the actual musical - and it makes the song interesting. Macavity is AWESOME! I know that I said that I didn't prefer this song for Brightman on her album "Surrender". I finally listened to it more carefully, and found that it's really interesting to listen to! My favorite song on the whole entire album - however - has to be "Tell Me on a Sunday". Beautiful lyrics, orchestrations, and overall spectacular voice talent ties the whole song together. Pie Jesu is a fairly nice piece from both Brightman and Paul Miles-Kingston - the 16 year old boy soprano. His voice is pure and straight with minimal vibrato. However, Brightman's voice shows a little bit TOO much vibrato! Overally, it's a good piece from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requium. THIS CD IS AMAZING! If you love Sarah from the Phantom of the Opera, then this collection of Lloyd Webber's work is just for you.
I also recommend Charlotte Church - (in her earlier career) - including Voice of an Angel and her self-titled album. I also recommend Love Changes Everything - The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection Vol.2 - just another grouping of Webber's classics. I also recommend Andrea Boucelli - he's awesome!
The Angel of Music.......2006-03-13
This is the third copy of this I've purchased. I wear them out listening to them. Awesome, Awesome music. Sarah's range and depth is so powerful!

okay.......2007-01-05
I heard wonderful things about this recording... but was a little disappointed. It is good, but nothing spectacular.
A promise about to be fulfilled.......2006-12-17
Not all of EMI's Debut seeries make it to the U.S., but since this one features an American singer, it did (as did the one featuring rising pianist Jonathan Biss). Nathan gunn is certainly well kn0wn now, after high-profile Met appearances in The Magic Flute and Harbison's An American Tragedy. The past few years have seen him mature, even though his voice will never be heroic. Gunn is very well suited to songs, although he makes a moving (and physically handsome) Billy Budd.
Her he sounds a little stiff, and he cannot carry off the numbers that re comic (Bolcom's Fur) or popular (Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?), but his straightforward masculinity works extremely well in Gene Scheer's Holding Each Other, he has enough poetry for Barber's Sure on This Shining Night, and just enough savoir faire for Rorem's Early One Morning. The voice itself isn't intrinsically beautiful, which may in the end mean that Gunn falls behind young counterparts like Gerald Finley and Simon Keenlyside, both of whom he resembles. Even so, this is a nice debut, and one can say that gunn's promise is being fulfilled.
Amazing collection - amazing voice........2006-02-22
Nathan Gunn has chosen a collection of mostly obscure songs and has applied his remarkable baritone voice to music not usually in the operatic repetoire. What results is a CD of depth, some humor, and extraordinary listenability. It's nice to see one of my favorite opera stars branch out. Bravo!
Amazing recordings.......2006-01-02
I first listened to this recording at the recommendation of a voice teacher and I am eternally grateful. I strongly recommend this album. Nathan Gunn is an extremely talented singer. As a singer myself (also a baritone like Nathan Gunn) I find much in his voice to model.
Nathan Gunn has an extremely beautiful voice, superb technique and execution, and has a very natural sound. There is an old steriotype of opera as sounding forced or artificial, but Nathan Gunn does a great job of avoiding this. He does a great job of communicating the "story" of the song to the listener, and I frequently found myself taken to the world of the song. Listening to many of his songs are like opening a good book and Nathan Gunn takes you there.
Highly recommended.
First Rate Singing!.......2005-12-20
I only recently discovered Mr. Gunn, but after hearing this recording, it makes me wonder why his name has eluded me for so long. Simply put, Nathan Gunn sings like a god! His voice is pure, and hypnotically beautiful to listen to. Turn on this CD and you will be wrapped in the most luxurious blanket of sound--his phrasing is impeccable, and his dynamics are wonderfully varied without being affected. His recording of Barber's "Nocturne" is haunting. "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" shows he isn't afraid of low notes, and the ending has some of the most spectacular high notes I've ever heard from a baritone. The Copland songs are also well done, as are the two John Jacob Niles selections. I wasn't familiar with Gene Scheer's songs prior to this CD, but they are all quite remarkable, though most especially "Lean Away" and "American Anthem." This is the best addition to my CD collection in a long time. I'm only saddened by the fact he doesn't have more recordings available. Mr. Gunn, I know you're busy with your opera schedule, but for those of us who can't make it to New York to see you in person, please record another CD!

Satisfying version of 'Pictures..'; liked album on the whole.......2007-05-31
I had attended a SF Symphony performance which included "Pictures At An Exhibition" as orchestrated by Ravel. I was pleasantly suprised by how much I liked that piece taken as a whole. I have always thought highly of Bernstein's interpretation, and believed I would hear a nicely played and interpreted version of 'Pictures..' Indeed, the piece is executed as I thought it would. I like Bernstein's interpretation of 'Pictures At An Exhibition', and the album, on the whole, is worth the suggested price.
Powerful music!.......2007-01-27
I loved this CD. It is the same cover and everything as the record we had while I was growing up. In HS we actually marched to this! Wonderful memories and excellent recording.
Timeless.......2003-12-31
There are very few musical memories I have before the age of ten but "Pictures At An Exhibition" is one of them.
I was in bed putting off going to school when I saw this awsome ad for The United States Navy.
While showing scenes of eighteenth century battleships, they played this music. Nearly thirty years later, I still cant get it out of my head!
Last movement of Pictures conducted too slow.......2002-05-21
Hello,
I feel that Bernstein conducted the last movement of Pictures too slowly. It has a majesty and grace all it's own but in Bernstein's hands it slows to a jaunted crawl and looses some of the awe effect. Also the percussion is ever so slightly too loud in the end. I don't thing the tubular bells or gong were meant to be heard as much felt. Kind of a let down, but there's another version I'm used to hearing that set me up for this. Not sure what version that is, but I'll let ya know if I find out. The rest of "Pictures" is decent, and "Night" is great.

Bernstein really captures the spirit of the music, from the light feel of the Unhatched chicks and the Market Place at Limoges, to the pure brawn of Bydlo, to the mysteriousness of the catacombs and the cum mortuis in liqua mortua, finishing it triumphantly with the great gate of Kiev. I've really enjoyed this production, and listen to it frequently.

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
Almost as wonderful as the first.......2007-08-02
We bought Beethoven's Wig 1 and loved it. My kids (ages 5 and 9) really enjoy listening over and over. Number 2 is almost as good. All of the songs are amusing and a couple are very funny. The lyrics are clever and do help you become familiar with composers and their music. I like that the pieces are played again in the second half without the lyrics. I highly recommend it for kids who enjoy music.
Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15
Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.
Great for the whole family.......2007-01-04
My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.
More Great Fun.......2006-03-13
Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.
One is better but this is still awesome!! Gotta have it!.......2006-01-10
My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.
One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07
What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!
Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16
Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!
