5 out of 5 stars Where it all started..........2007-07-24

This album is like a snapshot, frozen in time, of a lost moment. A simpler time when folk songs were sung by young men with beautiful voices. And this one is the most angelic voice of all - soft, inviting, with just a hint of the jazz phrasing and husky slur that would become John Martyn's trademark in a very short time. Although Martyn has declared war on on his own folk roots, there's no denying that his later songs and vocal style are grounded in the resilient blues and and folk-style songs of this album. It's the dark hollows of his voice that give these songs their depth, adding a bittersweet touch to even the sweetest fairytale lullaby. "Rollin' Home" and Sandy Grey" are classics. A must-have album for any John Martyn fan.

5 out of 5 stars Another fine live tribute to Giulini.......2007-03-01

BBC Legends released this live CD for Giulini's 90th birthday, and the musicmaking on it is typically heartfelt, warm, and genuine. The dates range from 1968 to 1975 but only the latest recording, the Schubert Ninth, is in stereo. Luckily, the two mono recordings are clear and listenable. The opening Der Freischutz Over. is gentler and less dynamic than most; even so, it is natural and flowing.

Then follows the main work, the Schubert C major with the London Phil. (the rest is with the New Philharmonia). Giulini's way wth the music is modern only to the degree that he adopts a fast empo for the opening Andante. After that the Allegro section is broad and flowing. He doesn't emphasize dramatic contrasts, sharp accents, or haromic struggle. His is a romantic, old-fashioned view, but Giulini carries it off beautifully. You feel his sincerity in every bar, and even though the performance doesn't add up to greatness, it's very fine. The BBC's stereo sound is as good as many studio recordings of the day.

Giulini felt a greater affinity for Britten's music than any other foreign conductor, and he adds to his heartfelt War Requiem, also on BBC, with This Building of the House Over., written, as I remember, for the Matings at Snapes hall that was the center of the Aldebrugh Festival, which Britten presided over. The opening is a moto perpetuo reminiscent of Vaughan Williams's The Wasps, but with a hymn-like choral part and updated, ambiguously tonal harmony--a very engaging work that Giulini performs tenderly.

5 out of 5 stars The folkie roots of a mystic rocker..........2001-11-04

Great record. Martyn's debut showed a strong, almost embarrassing debt to Dylan, which of course wasn't uncommon at the time. What was unusual, though, was his almost strident self-confidence, which lurks just below the surface, hinting at a brashness which fell just short of the arrogance of, say, a Richard Thompson. There's also a strong American blues influence, mixed in with the lovely folkie balladeering, inviting stylistic comparisons to John Renbourn and Bert Jansch, and Davy Graham. Yet Martyn was clearly his own man, and as future albums would bear out, his self-confidence was well-warranted.

john martyns first album, recorded when he was only 18, is my favorite of all his work. my favorite track, back to stay is a sad love song that seems to shake a tear from every person who hears it. this record is a must have for fans of leonard cohen, nick drake, and other melancholy folk singers. also featured on this album aside from his original compositions are cover versions of don't think twice, cocaine blues, and sandy grey. this album is highly reccomended.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Grace Bumbry sparkles in a stellar performance.......2005-10-22

Carlo Maria Giulini performed Verdi's Requiem frequently in the 1960s, making two recordings for the BBC and one for EMI. The latter is the most famous, but the two BBC recordings are arguably superior performances. At the time this recording was made, the Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus must have known the Requiem as well as any performers on the planet. I think that they can barely be faulted. The pronunciation of the chorus is a bit too English, but how often do you hear a choir with diction so good that you can criticize their pronunciation? The three sets of soloists with whom Giulini recorded this work in the Sixties were all fine. On the EMI recording, Ludwig is the jewel and Schwarzkopf the Achilles' heel, relatively speaking. The BBC recordings have no weak links, even though, today, their personnel are not nearly so well known as they deserve to be. Ilva Ligabue sings beautifully and handles the exposed sections of the "Libera me, Domine" very well. Sandor Konya can't quite match Bjoerling in the tenor role and may be slightly shaded by Gedda on Giulini's EMI recording, but his performance here is a memorial to an unjustly overlooked talent. No other country can produce great basses the way Bulgaria does and Raffaele Arie (Italian name notwithstanding) is an excellent proof of that. Best of the soloists, though, is Grace Bumbry. I have known and adored this music for more than twenty years, but my jaw hit the floor when I first heard Grace Bumbry's singing here; it is matchlessly beautiful. I honestly do not believe that I have ever heard singing more lovely, not just of this work, but of anything. Many mezzo-sopranos have trouble with this music, because they can reach the high notes, but not the low ones, or vice versa, or, if they can cope with the full range, they need an audible gear-change between the lower and higher registers. Not so Grace Bumbry; her tone is flawless throughout and her reach sounds effortless. It is miraculous singing. As I mentioned before, Christa Ludwig's excellence is the outstanding attraction of Giulini's EMI recording. Grace Bumbry excels Christa Ludwig and I can't think of higher praise than that. The recording is mono, as against stereo for both the EMI recording and the (earlier) BBC one. As it happens, the usually outstanding EMI sound engineers had something of an off-day with the Requiem, despite the advantages of the recording venue. Conversely, the BBC's recording, in the notorious Royal Festival Hall acoustic, is very pleasing. This is beautiful music, exquisitely performed.
