Ric Taylor, VIEW Magazine, October 10, 2002
Landing is both moving and brilliant — capturing one powerful voice, six deftly played strings and a dozen heartfelt songs.

Product Description
Fans of Jacob Moon's solo acoustic shows now have good reason to celebrate. "Landing" has landed. Recorded live in May before a spellbound audience in Hamilton, this remarkable CD documents an artist at one with his fans and his craft.

Intense and emotionally raw, this collection has many new Jacob Moon songs, some old ones, and re-workings of everything from old gospel to Paul Simon. Jacob is also joined on several tracks by singer -songwriter Lisa Winn and gospel choristers Marion Clarke, Juliet Clarke and Chantal Hendricks.

"Landing" was recorded at Catherine North Recording Studio, an old church converted into an open- concept studio. An all-analog approach was taken to the recording and Glen Marshall, the engineer on the project, made good use of the room and his collection of classic tube microphones, making everything sound warm, spacious and rich with detail.

The Lanois Connection: This concert was videotaped by Bob Lanois and will be released on DVD later this year. Lanois has shot footage for such artists as Emmylou Harris, Bruce Cockburn and Willie Nelson, and served as art director on the "Landing" layout. Lanois' work and excitement for this project amounts to a major endorsement from an industry veteran, and, according to Moon, "he has taken my record to another level completely".

Creative Fan Financing: To help finance this CD, Moon went to his usual backers--his fans. For the last two albums, he has offered fans the chance to place a pre-order for the CD, which meant that they got first crack at it upon its release(with their names in the liners, of course), and Moon got much-needed seed money to finish the job. This time out, each person who attended the sold out shows paid $25 for admission and a pre-ordered CD; a steal when you consider what they got in return. Not only did fans get to witness a live recording in an idyllic setting, they could look forward to a special-edition commemorative CD, complete with extended liner notes, including a cool collage of the fans from each night and their names in the booklet.

4 out of 5 stars Good companion for Battlestar Fans.......2007-05-07

If you're a Battlestar Galatica Fan, this audio is an excellent companion to your collection. Passacaglia, Forgiven, and The Shape of Things to Come are emotional and addictive orchestral soundtracks. Not every song from the first season is included in this CD. The opening credit songs for the UK and the US versions and the battle songs (The Thousandth Landing, Battle on the Asteroid) are included. Battlestar Muzaktica is quite odd and doesn't fit with the collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Captures the feel of the show.......2007-04-11

Has a great selection of songs from the 1st season. I like show/movie CDs that you can picture the scenes and emotion of the actors when you hear the song. The Celtic underlays are great, and the Taiko drumming style is very well used for building intensity in the music. If you really like the series, you should probably really enjoy the music as well!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-04-11

If you like the music in a scene that just blends in and makes the scene even more emotional or suspenseful, that is what the scores from season one do on this cd. I initially bought it to for the prologue (cylon music) and the two main titles (U.S. and U.K.) but after listening to the entire cd, I have become completely addicted to it. The titles of the scores usually give you a hint of the scene and the liner notes also tell you the episode that they are from but the soundtrack has definitely made rewatching season one an even more intriguing experience. The scores with words, are written by Bear and are in various languages, but the words, especially the opera piece, are actually so dead one with the scene and in this specific scene hilarious. I love this soundtrack. If you are someone who is addicted to really grasping everything that happens in this show and watch and analyze it beyond face value, this is an added bonus to have in your collection. I highly recommend it!!!

4 out of 5 stars BSG.......2007-04-10

Man I love the Classic and the Present BSG's So Inaturally find the SoundTrack/Score A joy and very relaxing. They tend to sound very similar but they are very diffrent.

5 out of 5 stars Agree with everyone else.......2007-03-28

There have been lots of raving reviews of this album, as well as the equally sensational season 2 soundtrack. I just wanted to add my opinion on one track, "Destiny". An earlier review describes an Arabic string instrument being used, but it is actually a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument that has such a distinct sound that it's hard to imagine it being used for anything other than traditional gagaku music. I don't know if anyone but McCreary has ever tried to use this instrument for something else, but it hardly matters. The fact that McCreary managed to use it so effectively in a piece that is so different from gagaku music is a perfect testament to his unique genius. I'm really looking forward to following McCreary's career.

Album Description

Featuring original music composed by Alberto Iglesias. Adapted from the best-seller John le Carre's romantic thriller, two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz head the cast of "The Constant Gardener." In a remote area of northern Kenya, the dedicated activist Tessa Quayle (Weisz) is found brutally murdered. Her travelling companion, a local doctor, appears to have fled the scene and the evidence points to a crime of passion. Sandy Woodrow (Danny Huston), Sir Bernard Pellegrin (Bill Nighy), and other member of the British High Commission assume that Tessa's widower, their mild-mannered colleague Justin Quayle (Fiennes) will leave the matter to their discretion. They could not be more wrong... Featuring music performed by acclaimed Kenyan percussionist and Real World recording artist Ayub Ogada, Alberto Iglesias' ("La Mala Educacion," "The Dancer Upstairs," "Todo Sobre Mi Madre") lush score evokes the film's compelling African and European landscapes.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Score.......2007-04-24

For someone like me who purchases soundtracks for the score to use for dance & skating programs, this soundtrack definitely made it into my collection. My only minus to the soundtrack is that there isn't much variety among the many tracks. But I am still able to work around it.

3 out of 5 stars Only track 13.......2007-03-31

In my opinion, only track 13 is worthy of buy this CD. Track 13 is beautiful, other than that extremely depressing music...... Once again track 13 is the most beautiful adn touching music that I have ever heard!

5 out of 5 stars Great Service.......2007-02-12

My CD was delivered in a very timely manner and the product was in great shape upon arrival.

4 out of 5 stars A nice reminder of a very moving movie.......2007-01-12

Favorite songs are the ones by Ayub Ogada. I think it's wonderful that we found his music through this film.

3 out of 5 stars it captures the spirit of the movie.......2006-11-10

I like this soundtrack because it reminds me of the movie, which I loved. I am not sure I would appreciate it much if I hadn't seen the movie and didn't have pictures in my mind for each theme. It is redolent of Africa though and that in itself is satisfying.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars First Landing Is on Target!.......2007-07-16

The Dynamics' 1969 release "First Landing" is great, but an interesting reminder that the R&B music from 1945 to the synthetic "dark ages of Black music" from 1983 to very recent times was so great, that countless wonderful albums like this were considered mediocre at the time, but brilliant today!

Muscially, these guys are first cousins to the (also underrated) Mad Lads. This combines Northern streetcorner doo-wop with gritty-but-pretty Southern Soul (like the Mad Lads, this was also recorded in Memphis). Their signature tune "Ice Cream Song" is a revelation of all that works well in a Soul record-Wonderful harmony, catchy hooks, rotating leads, superb musicianship, clever lyrics and heartfelt singing (trust me, you've never heard a GOOD GOD A'MIGHTY like this)!

"Since I Lost You" is another standout here. Here, our man gets into a preaching mode midway though to the end of the tune that almost puts James Brown (not the sportscaster) to shame! Other fine sings are "Dum de Dum" (not as bad as the title would imply), "What Would I Do" (which is simply beautiful), and "I want to Thank You."

This is what your oldies stations aren't playing, and there's SO MUCH MORE underrated and unknown classic soul that's not even played on SATELLITE radio that's it's a pity. Thank the British Northern Soul movement for bringing this kind of stuff to the fore and the late Detriot DJ and Supremes' inspiration Frantic Ernie Durham for reviving the "Ice Cream Song" on his radio show in the 90s. Buy this, so that more such Cds are made that

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's big and it's terrible!.......2005-07-28

Sorry, I couldn't resist using Raymond Burr's awful line. But this soundtrack is indeed truly AWESOME! One of the best things about Godzilla is the music, which was so distinctive and so haunting that it made us overlook the cheesy special effects. More than any of his 1950's monster contemporaries, Godzilla's soundtrack gave the big guy a soul that spooked children and stayed with them long after they grew up into sensible adults. I still get chills whenever I hear those school girls singing the Prayer for Peace. Akira Ifukube was a genius whose music was an apt coronation for the King of the Monsters!

5 out of 5 stars Great Addition to Your Collection.......2004-10-07

If you're a fan of the original Godzilla movie, American version or Japanese, both contain the same music. This CD is a dream come true for Godzilla fans in the U.S. The music sounds great, doesn't sound aged at all, but still old fashioned, which is good. Track 20, is probably the saddest and most moving song I have ever heard, long song also, 6:20, but it's worth the listen. Akira Ifukube is definatly the master when it comes to kaiju film music. The extra tracks are a treat as well, they are just the film versions of some of the songs, but still great. If you want to make your kaiju collection grow, then this is worth it, or if you just like orchestral music, then it's worth the wait for shipping. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Origato, Ikufube-san!.......2004-08-24

This remastered CD of Akira Ikufube's original Godzilla score is an excellent addition to the fiftieth anniversary celebrations for the film series. Ikufube is constantly mentioned in discussions of the Godzilla films, and it's easy to see why: he always treated his subject seriously, even when the movie itself didn't.

Surprisingly, the music doesn't feel terribly dated. You can often pinpoint the age of a movie soundtrack pretty accurately, particularly 1950s sci-fi movies (the theramin is usually the giveaway). I don't think this is because Ikufube continued to score the Godzilla series well into the 1990s. Rather, I think his classical music training allowed him to create a score that was not influenced by the sounds of the time. "Classic" is an overused adjective, but it's appropriate for a score that feels relatively modern after 50 years.

The one thing that does date the music is the quality of the recording. It's in mono, of course, and the music is not as crisp as you would hear in a contemporary recording. Still, the sound remaster is impressive considering the age of the original recordings.

It's also interesting to listen to this score in comparison to Ikufube's later music for the series. The music is extremely somber, in contrast to the more adventurous tone that Ikufube created for later films. For example, Godzilla's "entry" theme is here (in tracks like "Godzilla's Rampage"), but in a much slower, more menacing version that is barely recognizable as the powerful signature it would become later.

At just over 45 minutes, there's not a lot of music on this CD. And of those, four tracks reprise earlier cues, just rearranging the cues to the order they appeared in the movie. There's also some Godzilla sound effects. Their inclusion is appropriate, considering that Ikufube created them with musical instruments! (This piece of information is one of my favourite tidbits from the liner notes, which are fairly good.)

If you're interested in the familiar Godzilla themes, you're probably better off with a compilation CD of Godzilla music: it will have better sounding recordings, and the themes are more recognizable. But for serious kaiju fans and film score afficianados, this CD is a treat.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The penultimate collection ..........2006-12-07

Generally I agree with Strategos in his ecstatic Spotlight Review above. It is a joy to here some of the most memorable themes and cues from some of the most memorable science fiction and fantasy movies (re)recorded in great sound and in lavish (re)orchestrations, played by renowned classical orchestras, namely the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, no less.

I have always had a weak spot for (good, or maybe even intelligent) science fiction/fantasy and film music, especially its way of evoking mystery, grandure and wide open spaces. Call it a weakness if you want. But it was maybe really kick started off, for as far as I can remember, with Star Trek. But especially Star Trek II, III and IV - essentially a trilogy - because of their very romantic but very warm, human core, set on the broadest canvasses of unlimited and mysterious outer space. But then there was the music for adding that essential extra dimension of emotion and atmosphere. I am happy that much of the music on this album is from the Star Trek series and films, often equaling or sometimes even outclassing the original recordings.

This kind of music (for the movies) should be seen as an art on its own rights with its own merits and qualities. As such, the musical sequences on these CD's are a beautifully played cross section of some of the most evoking orchestral music for science fiction/fantasy film ever created. And I very much like the nicely blended, wide and deep orchestral soundpicture with enough reverberation to evoke a sense of wide open spaces.
I am quite thrilled by tracks like the evocative music from Dune, truly transporting one to the vastly sands of Arrakis (the music is wonderful, but to my great regret I think the movie itself is a flawed masterpiece at best, alas.). And then there is the very different, goofy music for Ghostbusters (memories of childhood), the spoofy but electrifying music from Mars Attacks (lovingly parodist music, this, with not a little touch of irony) and the happily adventurous, forward driving Theme from Galaxy Quest ('Never give up, never surrender!'), now also used for the internet-based fan-series Star Trek: The Hidden Frontier. On the other side of the spectrum we have the atmospheric music for Enemy Mine (an underestimated 'little' movie), the Theme from The Right Stuff (actually science FACT, not fiction, this film, just like Apollo 13, of course), the eerily attractive music for Species, the original End Title for Alien (not used in the theatrical version of the movie, where it was replaced by music from howard Hanson's Second Symphony), the exquisitely exotic music for Stargate, the sweet and warmly sympathetic, beautifully re-orchestrated, theme for Starman, the title cue for Star Trek: TOS (much more melodiously played than the original! If only a series nowadays could continue to be as thought provoking and as original as Star Trek was during its launch, fourty years ago ...) and a truly overpowering End Titles Suite from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. I especially like the thrillingly grandiloquent rendition here of the music for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. And how nice it is to hear the (thematic) similarities between James Horner's music for The Wrath of Khan, his great break-through as a film music composer, and his (two years) earlier music for Battle Beyond the Stars (which did indeed help him earn the job for writing the music for Star Trek II) ...

But on the 'down side', if one is looking for - for example - the gorgeously expansively played End Titles from Cocoon, it is not included here: one has to acquire the album that 'kicked it all off', so to say, namely 'Space and Beyond', also on Silva Screen. I was very pleased also with the inclusion on that album of some of the music from the series Star Trek: The Next Generation, namely where one of the characters, Tasha Yar, in one of the episodes (Skin of Evil) is saying goodbye to her crewmmates: sweetly sentimental and simple music which I have always wanted to own on CD. I guess that a few cues from the other two sequals ('Alien Invasion: Space and Beyond II' and 'Space3: Beyond the Final Frontier') didn't make it onto this 4 CD collection-album as well, but I guess that it would be the 'better part of the bargain' to opt to buy this 'The Science Fiction Album' instead of buying all three albums separately. Well, of course it is for yourself to ultimately decide what you really want ;-)

If I were to nitpick (which is not easy with such a marvellous project as this one), then I would say that while all music is performed with magnificent grandure and with style, some of it is not performed as crisply and as technically 'on the spot' as some of the original recordings: ensemble is a little slack and the playing somewhat stilted sometimes, losing some of the edge and the originality of the writing. ET and Star Wars spring to mind, but then the soundtracks for Star Wars are traditionally recorded with the magnificent London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro John Williams himself, and these superior recordings (especially the ones for Episode I, II and III) can't really be bettered, IMHO. Likewise for the music from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, I believe that in the end one really has to resort to the ultimate reference, namely the original recording (which is true in many other instances of 'original recordings'), and then the 20th anniversay colector's edition of this soundtrack on Columbia/Legacy (truly unmissable, this veritable classic of sci-fi/film music soundtracks!).

But all in all this 4CD-collection amounts to probably being the penultimate high quality sci-fi music album collection (I certainly know of no other project that comes as close quality as well as quantity wise), with some of the most memorable musical moments from classic to modern sci-fi/fantasy film captured in lavish orchestrations.
Collection-wise: five *stars*. Playing: generally four *stars*, sometimes more. The recording quality: five *stars*. The music (qualified on its own merits as film music) and its (re)orchestrations: generally five *stars*. In the end this is all highly recommended, and certainly not to be missed by science fiction and fantasy film music fans. Klaatu barada nikto.

5 out of 5 stars Muisic of the Spheres.......2006-11-06

You wonderful four disk collection of SF music. It startsa up the the grand master of SF music, 2001: A space Odyssey all the way to Superman. This is all American SF music and several themes I would have liked to have included are not there. All in all though, a collection you will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars The Ulllllltimate Sci-Fi Music Collection.......2005-10-23

If one person gives great gifts, it's the illustrious Codemaster Talon. I've received a fair number of gifts in my lifetime, but so far, my older sister's take the cake. Take this one for instance. I'm real big on orchestral music, to the point where I listen to them more than any other kind of music. I've got orchestral versions of video game themes, orchestral soundtracks to truck-loads of anime shows (Big O, Escaflowne, and Giant Robo are incredible), and could probably spend the rest of my life just trying to study the nuances of all the classical music I've got. Being such a huge fan of orchestral music, I also have come to believe that orchestra music produced for movies and television is the new classical music (or as someone once said, Mozart would be making music for movies if he were alive today). Being a huge sci-fi fan, that kind of music has always been particularly near and dear to my heart. But were I to buy each and every soundtrack for every sci-fi I liked it would cost quite a bundle, and would include a lot of sub-par music along with the grandiose and fantastic main and memorable themes. That's where this beauty comes in.

The moment I ripped off the shrink-wrap and popped it into my cd player was a moment of great trepidation. Believe me when I tell that I've seen my fair share of sub-par orchestral recording in my lifetime. Very often they are in those big super-packs of music, and suffer from poor direction, improper mastering, and sometime even pathetic orchestration (or worse yet have something sounding like a cheap synthesizer and a kazoo in place of a full orchestra). I needn't have worried though. This sucker is fantastic.

Many people who are not audiophiles will probably miss the point of this cd collection. It is not the original versions of the pieces. It is re-orchestrations, mostly by the phenomenal Prague Symphony Orchestra. Many of these themes didn't sound all that hot in there original versions because they were low budget films or were not recorded in high-fidelity. Here they are given the full treatment, mastered with the most loving care imaginable. Often the version found in these cds is SUPERIOR to the original.

Remember the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Of course you do. But how many times have you heard a cheap imitation of the original version from the movie, starting too low in volume and ending too high (and missing the essential pipe-organ that gives it that extra oomph)? Well, this first track in the entire collection is not only everything it should be instrumental and timing-wise, but it also has been oh-so-carefully adjusted during the mastering process so that at no time is the music either too low or too high in volume (surely a benchmark for every other recording ever to be made of the piece).

Or what about the theme from the (at-the-time) uber-creepy The Black Hole? The orchestration of this piece of music goes from tiumphant to terrifying and back again, with a splendor and cleanness that I CERTAINLY don't remember being in the original recording.

Then there's the new version of the theme from Independence Day, complete with a violin solo, a far more electrifying ending climax, and a chorus so thunderous that you feel like applauding at the end. Simply indescribable. Kind of like the MIND-BLOWING rendition of the theme from The Last Star Fighter. This has been one of my favorite themes for a long time now, but I've never heard it played like this. I think the original version of the theme is something like 1 minute long, but this new version doesn't just fade out (HAHAHAHA!!!!) THIS version is THREE minutes long, goes through the main theme THREE times, with the final strains being so triumphant and joyous I could not help but feel an electrifying charge the first dozen or so times (come to think of it, I still feel that way). This is superior to the original in EVERY way. AWESOME.

And let's not forget the incredible new rendition of Stargate with it's heavy use of clarinets (for Egyptian effect!) and a triumphant new ending (completely lacking the chanting from the original version. This version is so different that for the first minute it is very hard to tell that it is in fact Stargate. But then the main theme kicks in, and then you get this incredible flute solo for my favorite part of theme (the whole thing is played slower, but arguably more powerfully than the original). My goodness. At first I found the thing so different I didn't like it. But then I listened to it again. And again. And again.

I could go on and on, talking about the fantastic new rendition of Moon Raker, the ear-popping Battlestar Galactica, the classic Star Trek (First Contact has a minute or two of the theme from Star Trek:The Motion Picture before going into the main theme), or the sweet renditions of music from the Star Wars movies (or the music from E.T.).

I have to mention though that this collection was not picked based merely on what people want, or on what is popular. No, the people who made it obviously thought a GOOD music collection was better than a popular one. That's why you get a heartbreakingly beautiful theme from A.I. instead of the main theme. It's why you get music from movies that you probably never gave a second thought to the music (because the movie was lousy). It's why you get Armageddon, Judge Dredd, and Robocop (who would have guessed their music was so COOL when there was all that crazy action and bad-acting going on on-screen).

I said it before and I'll say it again. This cd-set was mastered with tender-loving-care, and it shows BIG-TIME. High-fidelity the likes of which I have not seen since the days when cds were brand-new in the world. Dolby Surround. Perfectly balanced. BEAUTIUFL orchestrations. About the only thing that makes me scratch my head is the weird sound-effect tracks (Oooookay.....). Other than that, it's PERFECT. Obviously they could not include every sci-fi theme ever (no one can), but this collection is REALLY GOOD. A lot of great themes that got away (forgotten gems :), new versions of old favorites, and under-appreciated classics aplenty, but ALWAYS the full and complete versions with nothing cut-out (the theme from Dune is quite extended).

If you love movie music (and sci-fi movie music in particular) you MUST buy this awesome collection). It is not the original recordings. Almost always the new ones are better (if they aren't better they're just equal). This is what you have been waiting for. I for one am going to be buying quite a few cds from this company in the future. Give your ears the treat they deserve. Buy it NOW.

5 out of 5 stars SciFi Album gift.......2005-07-20

I bought the Science Fiction Album as a gift for my son who is twenty-one years old. He is a musician, and also a huge fan of many SciFi shows and movies. I thought this would be the perfect thing for him and I was right. He loves it!

3 out of 5 stars Away From to be a Collectible Peace.......2004-12-16

If you like Sci-Fi movies and want a compilation of their important scores, this is the CD-set to buy. But let me warn you about that very few songs in the cds are from the original soundtracks. Most of them is re-recorded by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. But the sound quality of cds are very good, because they have HDCD and Dolby Surround labels. This set is away from to be a collectible peace, but it is a good general compilation of favorite Sci-Fi movie scores.

Landing on Water may not be Neil Young's worst album, but it's probably the least noteworthy collection he's assembled. For what turned out to be his penultimate Geffen album, Young rebuffed his regular set of co-producers in favor of West Coast journeyman Danny Kortchmar--seemingly in the interest of honing a more radio-friendly sound. As a result, the singer finds himself bobbing his way through layers of synthesizer fills and Steve Jordan's strident drumming; the whole thing feels like a bland '80s rock soundtrack. None of these songs have even become concert salvage projects--evidence that their composer doesn't hold them in high regard. The one standout here is "Hippie Dream," a scathing death-of-the-counterculture screed inspired by David Crosby's then-life-threatening drug problems: "Another flower child goes to seed / In an ether-filled room of meat hooks / It's so ugly" Young wails, and one can't help but wish the music had half as much bite as the lyrics. --Steven Stolder

1 out of 5 stars Bad ideas don't get much worse than this.......2007-02-23

Okay, Neil with synthesizers and drum machines. Strike anybody else as stupid? Because this, along with Life, is the worst Neil Young album out there. The lyrics are frequently embarrassing (I've Got a Problem; Hippy Dream; Weight of the World; Violent Side; Drifter), and the aforementioned drum machines and such got on my nerves fast. There's not a single song on this mess worth salvaging. Neil's put out some great stuff, but this isn't an example of what he can do. There's not even a memorable guitar solo thrown in. Skip over it.

5 out of 5 stars A Very fun Young adventure.......2006-11-17

I actually really do Love this album, but then I really love it when Young goes exploring and doesnt just do something just to please his Harvest fans. I mean I love Harvest too.but I already have Harvest, so why do I want him to do it again! I didnt even realize he was doing this sort of exploring during the 80s so I only came upon this album recently . whereas in the 60s and 70s I did consider myself a fan of his music, it wasnt until the 90s that I became a real fan of Young himself and all his creations and projects. I just love how he keeps surprising me .The past 6 years in particular and thats what made me start to explore his "missing years" ...the years I wasnt paying attention during the 80s.
maybe because I did go into this Album with the idea that I now know Young to be a musical and technical adventurer I was ready for anything... but even then I was more than pleasantly surprised by it and its now one of my favorite Young Albums.
of course to put that in perspective,I guess I should also add that my favorite Young projects are : After the Gold Rush, Harvest, Rust Never Sleeps { One of my top fave Concerts I ever went to} Zuma, Ragged Glory, Greendale{another favorite concert} and Prarie Wind . Thats not to take anything away from others, but just the ones I tend to go back to most often.
I am so glad to find Landing on Water. In fact I think I need to listen to it again right now..

3 out of 5 stars If you can handel synths, you can handle this.......2006-08-29

I hated this album when I first heard it, due in large part to the fact that "Weight of the World," the opening track, is perhaps the worst cut on the album. However, I have to agree with the reviewer who said this album has a charm. It's a weirded out charm, but for me, it's there. It's not Neil's best, but the songwriting showcases his ability to write simple catchy songs. "Violent Side" is amazing, especially the coda. Check out "Bad News Beat" with headphones, the synths really make sense. And the lyrics and structure of "Hard Luck Stories" are successful. Really, I think this album would appeal more to non-Neil fans than the hardcore Crazyhorse freaks out there. If you like Kraftwerk, if you like (or have a soft-spot for) Invisible Touch-era Genesis, then this might just be a discovery for you. For Neil fans who want to see the whole picture of his output, then this is a unique and challenging, though admittedly minor, piece to the puzzle.

1 out of 5 stars Neil's absolute worst.......2006-05-20

Let me start by saying that Neil Young is probably my all-time favorite rock-and-roll artist. I own thirty of his albums and still eagerly await each new release. But this turkey is the only Neil Young album I ever actually sold back used. I can not say a single good thing about it.

Simply put, "Landing On Water" was a ghastly miscalculation by the master. How Neil could have thought that a collection of mediocre songs driven primarily by synthesizers was a good idea is beyond me. And while I have often been pleasantly surprised by some of his more unconventional projects (the Shocking Pinks, for example), my only reaction to this album was horror.

If you want to hear Neil doing something interesting with synths, check out "Trans." Avoid this disaster at all costs!

3 out of 5 stars Hard Luck Story.......2006-02-25

Of all the 60s legends who took baffling artistic detours through the decade Kris Kristofferson described as "shipwrecked"--Dylan and the Stones come especially to mind--Neil Young's was by far the most fascinating. After responding to the epic success of the "Rust" albums with characteristically unpredictable forays into inaccessible pseudo-punk (Reactor) and rickety folk meanderings (Hawks & Doves), Neil Young journeyed to places few of his fans were willing to go: the electronica dance beats of "Trans" which, we later learned, featured electronically distorted vocals that emerged from attempts at communicating through a computer with his son Ben, a quadriplegic suffering from cerebral palsy.

In retrospect, the 80s are as legendary a period in Neil Young's career as his 70s heyday--not because the music was great, but precisely because it wasn't, culminating in the now-infamous lawsuit filed against Young by David Geffen for making music that didn't sound Neil young enough. Many like to call "Landing on Water" Neil's worst album, but that distinction--if we really must make it--belongs to the morbidly produced "Everybody's Rockin'". While Springsteen and Joel seemed to discover new voices with 50s nostalgia pieces like "Pink Cadillac" and "Uptown Girl" around the same time, Neil's flirtation with similar curiosities reflected, if anything, a voice that had become all but irretrievable.

It could hardly have been a surprise, then, that "Landing on Water" further exemplified the erratic artistic indulgences Young was favoring at the time, with its characteristically grungy licks and riffs laid over a jarring and misguided cacophony of synthesized drums and rhythms. It isn't just that the album sounds dated in 2006; the production is so insular that it was destined to sound dated before the year of its release came to a close. And yet, despite all this, "Landing on Water" contains three essential performances that die-hard and open-minded fans will learn to appreciate. "Hippie Dream"--with its moving eulogy for the bygone days of flower power--is a biting appraisal of an era he helped define, while "Drifter" and "Touch the Night" showcase a Neil Young who almost finds his groove amid the album's synth-laden idiosyncrasies.

These songs are treasures of an artistic vision stretching to fathom the boundaries of its expression, and the ambition of the material it produced at that time is, to my ears, every bit as beautiful as Young's best work. It may not always have sounded great--indeed, it usually strained just to sound listenable. But Neil's refusal to look away from less familiar artistic cravings is exactly the kind of edginess his reputation is founded on, and it is the good fan who understands glories like "Sleeps With Angels", "Freedom" and "Ragged Glory" could not have been possible without the misadventures that preceded them.

3 out of 5 stars Flawed Track Inclusion.......2007-07-29

I have to admit right off the bat that I don't own this album, although I've been trying to scrape up all the original soundtracks for the movies and some of the TV series. But looking through the track listing, it seems muddled with too many sound effects and tracks that could've been replaced with better ones. I wish Paramount and the recording industries would release a 2-CD set of tracks that includes only the main title sequences of each Star Trek TV series and standout tracks from the 10 feature films, since most of these soundtracks have gone out of print and are hard to find. Most of these compilations of different film tracks never include the main title sequences of the films, which are often the standout orchestral tracks of each movie. I hope they release an album like this, filled with only the best Trek music that is hard to find.

4 out of 5 stars Quite good, but not a stellar "Trek".......2007-05-18

Silva Screen Records has made a name for itself releasing reproductions of modern orchestral soundtracks, with most of its products centering around a particular genre or composer. Star Trek has a history of quality music, so its no suprise Silva has taken a crack at music in the final frontier. This is a fine release, with some strong points and some weak ones as well.

IN GENERAL: For the purist looking for a "best of" compilation taken from the original soundtracks take note: this isn't that product. Rather, these are reproductions by Nic Raine conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic. That said, this is a quality group, and the general sound is professional and comes off quite well (for the most part..I'll mention a few exceptions). It is superior to the other releases I have heard from the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.

SELECTION: The biggest advantage here is variety of sources. The Trek feature films are all represented here, as well as the various series (except for the last one, "Enterprise"). The thouroughness seems to match or excel the oher Star Trek Compilation CDs that have been released. There are a few other offbeat additions..notably a four minute suite from the videogame Star Fleet Academy. Personally, I found this bland track to be four minutes of wasted disk space. The original series has many memorable moments (listen to the Amok Time/The Doomsday Machine soundtrack) which would be be more exciting and also a better fit on this album.

Jerry Goldsmith's standard Star Trek March is heard far too often on these 2 CDs. The march itself is terrific, but it has been used so much it has become the franchise's major theme and the album's producers rely on it by representing many movies by their "End Titles". Unfortunately, Goldsmith's end titles consistently use a three-section approach: two sections of the "standard" Star Trek March sandwich a middle section of music that is unique for that particular film. This is OK if you are listening to a single movie's soundtrack, but for a compilation album, the fourth or fifth time you hear the march, it is too much. It would have been a better idea to cut a few "End Title" performances in favor of other selections from the films' soundtracks.

PERFORMANCE QUALITY: For the most part it is very good and captures the spirit of the original soundtracks. Selections from Horner's scores for the second and third films stand out as particularly well done. The last movie, "Nemesis" also has a terrifically arranged suite, and most of the movie soundtrack reproductions are very good quality. The only exception is from "Klingon Attack" in which the awesome bass of the "blaster-beam" from the original cannot be matched by the comparatively hollow synthesized atempt here.

PERSONAL GRIPE: the inclusion of sound effects. Every so often a special effect like "Warp Drive" or "Dogfight in Space" pops up between tracks. This by itself would be extremely cheesy. Add to this that these are not the actual sound effects from the TV shows or movies and the cheesiness levels reach a level I think only a Wisconsin resident could appreciate. Sci Fi music (and Star Trek in particular) seems to inspire some labels to add special effects inclusions like this. Who knows why.

5 out of 5 stars Love The Soundtrack.......2007-04-03

I bought this soundtrack and I love it.A great edition to the star trek fans.

5 out of 5 stars Best ST recording in the Alpha Quadrant.......2007-01-10

Great collection of Star Trek series and Movie themes; only a Klingon
Opera is missing.

5 out of 5 stars I must disagree.......2005-07-17

I own all the original recordings, and I still enjoy this re-recording. It is good. It is better than the Cincinatti Pops "Symphonic Star Trek", it is better than the Richard Hayman "Star Trek" compilation from 89, its better than the Sci Fi compilation on the Edel label from 93 and for the most part is better than Varese's Ultimate Star Trek from 1998.

This collection has music you will not find anywhere else. The Tasha's Farewell track is beautiful and the only other place its avialable is the Edel "Best of Science Fiction" compilation from 1993, and while that was recorded by the same orchestra, it was with a different conductor, and comparing the two, you can tell that Nic Raine was more successful with Prague than William Motzing was. That said Edel release is also more than $30 here on amazon. Also this release is in HDCD Dolby which is a plus. There's also two cues from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; one of them is on The Best of Star Trek: 30th Anniversary Special, the other is not on any other album. In addition, there is music from Ron Jones "Starfleet Academy" video game which is pretty cool to listen to, and not availble anywhere else that I know of. Finally, Jerry Goldsmith's main theme can get boring after a while, I mean, its repetitive that it is in all the end credit suites, it would have been nice for Insurrection to have maybe an action cue instead of the end credits suite...And Nic Raine, did just that, only for Star Trek: Nemesis. Instead of the tradition end credit suite, Mr. Raine arranged a professional suite with the main Nemesis theme, some action cues, as well as the Goldsmith Star Trek march, and it is a wonderful 8 minutes. If you already have the 3 space and beyond albums, the Star Trek Nemesis track as well as Birds of Prey Decloaking from Star Trek III are the only new tracks on this CD.

This is a must-buy for fans of star trek in general, and hardcore star trek fans should buy this album for the aforementioned cues that aren't available anywhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Great recording.......2007-07-09

First of all, these are great sound quality and very little audience interference for a live recording. Very easy to listen to.

The tunes and songs are great. I've got all their albums now and listen to them all the time.

5 out of 5 stars About the best live album I have ...........2004-02-28

....and I have quite a few.
I have only recently become a fan of the band, but what a sensational troupe of people they are.

Having bought "Deux Voyages", it seemed to me obvious that the next album to buy should be a live one and I made the right choice. They were obviously very relaxed when they recorded the album - it comes through very clearly. The atmosphere is electric and the band just stomp along at such a lick. The 53-odd minutes seemed over in a flash. I had such a ball listening to it - i had to listen to it again immediately to make sure I didn't miss anything.

No weak track, just wonderful Cajun music. They sing and talk in either French or English and slip between the two languages naturally and with the utmost ease.

Just a sensational album and one for the connoisseurs of ALL music.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Cajun Music.......2002-03-20

My daughter, who lives in Louisiana, recently gave me this CD. I had never heard of the group but had other Cajun and Zydeco CD's for comparison. Overall, this has to be one of the best I have which includes Beausoleil, David Doucet, D.L. Menard, Bruce Daigrepont, Queen Ida, Clifton Chenier and Jo-El Sonnier. I highly recommend you add this CD to your collection if you like Cajun music. For the full pleasure, I recommend you listen to the CD at least once with a good set of earphones. I am in the heart of Bluegrass music country and this Cajun music is also greatly appreciated.

Album Description

"Midnight Landing," is 10 Ft. Ganja Plant's second release on ROIR. Their first, entitled "Hillside Airstrip", was uniformly hailed by the music press. "Midnight Landing," at it's heart, is inspired by the recording processes of the great Jamaican studio bands of the 70's (and their American counterparts, Motown and Stax) where a song was potentially written, learned, and recorded in one session, with the band playing live on one track and then being voiced on the second track, with no regrets, and no apologies. Add to this ethos, some dubwise studio mastery and experimentation ("Chanting Nyabinghi", inspired by the African drumming style, is a creative departure and one of the best tracks they've ever cut) and you begin to get the picture.

4 out of 5 stars Good. Reggae. Album........2007-03-25

A very palatable combination of instrumental, rock-steady, roots, and dub reggae with a somewhat Euro feel to it (think early Steel Pulse perhaps). One star deducted for some spotty production values (a bit of harshness to the mix, with some distortion that might even be intentional, i don't know).

1 out of 5 stars Midnight Landing.......2005-03-06

Absolutely no originality to this album. I purchased "No Bed of Roses" along with this album and it's much better (no wonder with Reggae ace Style Scott leading the project). The whole tiime I was listening to Midnight Landing I thought that perhaps there will be one song anyway that made the purchase worthwhile, and I had to wait until the very last song to think "yeah, maybe that one." There was no compeling instrumentals on this album either and I really wish they would quite trying to imitate Augustus Pablo with that melodica. I won't blame previous reviewers who liked the album because I already had it before reading my first review, but sorry you people should try listening to Isreal Vibration or Misty In Roots if you really want roots music. I hope I like John Brown's Body better because I was actually looking for their Spirits All Around album when I found this one. (not an internet purchase this time). Too bad I can't return this one.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-02-27

I was surprised that I had never heard of 10 Ft. Ganja Plant's music because this album is quite good. Draws quite a close resemblance to South African Reggae. My favorite song is "Let the music hit"

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as hillside airstrip.......2004-02-11

This new release is a let down compaired to their first album. The vocals are different and not as powerful. Althought they still have that strong and melodic rythem. I am still a huge fan but a little dissappointed

4 out of 5 stars GOOD, BUT NOT HILLSIDE AIRSTRIP.......2004-01-16

For the second outing, the Plant came with a solid effort. They had nice riddims, but the grooves were deeper on the first album. It took a few listens this time for me to get into them, yet in the end they won me over. Still worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Grada - Celtic music at its best.......2007-01-12

Grada is a great new band out of Dublin. I had the opportunity to see them perform on their last U.S. tour. I was impressed by their wonderful vocals and innovative instrumentals. I especially liked their use of Balkan beats. The instrumentation (flute, guitar, drum and fiddle) is pleasing to hear and their lead singer has a wonderful voice.

I've been a fan of Celtic music for many years. I remember the excitement I felt the first time I heard Planxty. I couldn't believe Irish music could sound that good (I thought it all sounded like the Clancy's and Dubliner's singing at a pub). I had the same thrill when I heard Grada. They are not a Planxty clone. Much of the music is original and their arrangements are unique (and their lead singer is female).

But once again I feel like a door has opened into a new sound and new direction. This group deserves support. I want them to prosper because I look forward to the joy they will bring in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Flutes.......2005-12-11

5 out of 5 stars An Unexpected Surprise.......2005-02-16

We discovered Gráda in a live performance at FitzGeralds in Berwyn, IL on Valentine's Day 2004. A group of us went at the spur-of-the-moment because we had out-of-town guests who wanted to hear some live music. We knew only to expect a five-member group from Dublin. Our small group ended up being half the audience, and it felt like such a thrill to have this outstanding group almost all to ourselves! Their performance was spirited, technically demanding, and yet seemingly effortless. They have a full, rich, well-balanced sound, and their compositions are nicely arranged. Gráda moved effortlessly between original compositions with influences from New Zealand and more traditional Breton selections. As the band took the stage, we knew with the first song we were in for a treat. We immediately grabbed the cell phones and started calling friends to come join us and hear this amazing group. In the end, our only disappointment was our with ourselves; we were unable to augment the audience due to the holiday and lateness of the hour. Give Gráda a listen, I'm sure you'll be glad you did. And if you see them in person, tell them we sent ya!

4 out of 5 stars Great album!.......2004-06-28

I watched them play in Sydney this year, but even though I love this album, there's nothing like listening to them live. Anne-Marie has an absolutely beautiful voice and the musicians really build up excitement and warmth when they play.
My favourite songs on the album would have to be Tread softly and Seven of Eight. Great album, been listening to it non-stop.
