Album Description
Highly anticipated third album from the innovative progressive rock outfit. Sensual, spiritual & unrestrained by musical boundaries, the dramatic, multi-layered arrangements combine with haunting vocal melodies to create a powerful & epic work where panoramic soundscapes give way to fragile moments of acoustic intimacy. Produced by Steve Evans (who also worked on Catatonia's International Velvet & Leftfield's Leftism). Immrama Records. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
Enya meets Yes.......2006-08-12
This is outstanding, I was waiting for something like this, I needed something like this. Its just the progressive rock we all know, but with ambient pads and angelical chorus voices like Enya. Catchy, very complicated sound layerings and melodies. There are some harsh electric guitars sounds, as well as some acoustics sweetness. Drumbeats are ok, nothing too outstanding, pads made by synths are really strong and nice
On the downside I think the album overall is too balladistic, there are no dark or frenetic fast parts, and also it could be more hard in my opinion, as guitar solos are too simplistic, but it seems its the nature of the band. But who doesn't want an extraordinary solo like the closening part from Arena "the visitor"? you won't find that here... But anyway, it depends on the taste. To me this album is a very good listen.
Another band I recommend (much heavier than this one, but overall more catchy) is Leaves' Eyes and the album I recommend from them is Lovelorn.
Best Song Oriented Prog CD in the past 5 Years!!.......2003-07-19
I chanced upon this band by hearing one of their songs (Strange Behaviour) off of a sampler CD. Their music is mostly beyond comparison, but to give a suggestion of who they might be similar to, think of Marillion (Seasons End CD, but the best from that - like "Easter") Yes, Genesis, the best moments from IQ and Pendragon, and you're getting close. This band is unique in their emphasis on strong melodies, perfect chord progressions and fantastic arrangements of the songs. They have beautiful female vocals and out of this world vocal harmony and arrangements, Wakeman style keys, emotional and moving (and quite fast yet tasteful) guitar (both lead and acoustic) and just perfect bass and drums. Songs are mostly in the 5 to 7 minute range, and the closer, clocking in at 10:30, is comparable to an epic of Yes or Genesis song writing and performance quality at their best moments. Sound production is perfect - and I'm quite hard to please in that area. Recording captures the dynamics wonderfully - from the quiet moments of piano and vocals to the bombastic peaks with full band and bass pedals! CD comes packaged with a 20 page CD booklet on high quality paper and includes lyrics, etc. I'm now going to buy their entire backlog (3 CDs and 2 DVDs) All can be ordered from their secure web site (or via syn-phonic off the web - where I got mine) or of course, here at Amazon. Go ahead - take the chance!! I've sent an e-mail to the band to let thewm know how much I enjoy their music, and if I could help market this band in the US, I'd do it for free - they're just that good!!
Best album of Prog Rock with female vocal since Anie Haslam.......2003-03-03
It's very gratefull to see how the women take part in the world of Progressive Rock more each day. The only woman that i remember that had an very remarkable presence into the progressive rock is Annie Haslman of REINAISSANCE (you can listen in albums like Novella and Scheherazade). Actually there are more female vocalist as Tracy Hitchings or Lana Lane. Whatever if there is a band with a great potencial to arrive at the top of the bests bands of progressive Rock with a female vocalist is KARNATAKA. This band contains the best female vocalist in the last 3 awards of the CLASSIC ROCK SOCIETY, the beautiful RACHEL JONES (and with this masterpiece surely she will go for the 4th). Imagine Enya singing with Marrillion (and a little of Fleetwood Mac) in his best times and you can have an idea of the Music of Karnataka. Very Melodic, softly and the same time powerfull, excellent composition and production, a great perfomance of the musicians and the hipnotizing and very sweet voice of Rachel. This album undoubtedly will be in my top THREE of the best albums of this year. I'm fan of the progressive rock since 27 years. I know what i say you. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDABLE IF YOU LIKE THE SYMPHONIC PROGRESSIVE ROCK, ENYA, MARRILION, PINK FLOYD, GENESIS, YES, PENDRAGON, IQ, PALLAS, SAGA, TRIUMVIRAT, MOSTLY AUTUMN, MYLENE FARMER OR ASIA. RATE 9.0 (10 is God).

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding music with angelical voices.............2004-05-03
I consider this CD as the best studio album produced by KARNATAKA. The band counts with brilliant musicians as Paul Davies as the lead guitar, Gavin Davis on drums, Anne Marie Miller, wonderful back vocalist, trumpet and flute player and one of the most beautiful leading vocalist today Rachel Jones. They can play live with outstanding special feeling..just listen to their live CD STRANGE BEHAVIOUR and you will understand what we talking about....
STORM also is the most clear approach of KARNATAKA'S rock style. Not so much mystique as Delicate flame of desire, this CD contains songs as The Journey, Love and Affection and Shine consider marvelous pieces of art. In their style we consider KARNATA as wine miracle, Latour bottled 1959.....

Customer Reviews:
A very enjoyable farewell cd for this version of the band........2006-02-07
Yes, "Strange Behavior" is the final album from this lineup of Karnataka, and departing lead vocalist Rachel Jones is probably the best reason for you to grab this "live anthology" of the band before she and others left.
They perform all of the songs (except "One Breath Away") from their last studio album "Delicate Flame of Desire", as well as many more selections from their other two albums. There are even a couple of "hidden track" songs tacked onto the last track "Out of Reach", which appear to be previously unreleased songs. With 134 minutes of music here, and a nice cd sleeve with photos of all the band members in concert, you really get your money's worth (assuming you can find it selling in the $20.00 range!).
If you're a newcomer to this band from Wales, Karnataka's music is sort of a cross between progressive rock and classic rock, with some Celtic/folk influences. They probably share the closest similarities with Mostly Autumn, except the vocals are all female. But you'll also find references to Hogarth-era Marillion, Genesis, Enya and some Renaissance. While their songs are mostly in the 5-7 minute range, they successfully weave romantic themes with lush, hypnotic atmospheres and catchy melodies.
The sound production on this live album is really great. Jones' fine vocals are harmonized sweetly with the voice of Anne-Marie Helder (who also plays flute). The standout instrumentalist in these performances has to be Paul Davies whose Andy Latimer/David Gilmour guitar passages really shine here on this cd - even more than on the studio albums.
This album will appeal to many lovers of music in general. There aren't any "killer" tracks that stand out and really move you, but there also aren't any "clunkers". Just a lot of good, pleasurable music of a slightly different nature. I recommend this cd as a great overview of a very entertaining band.
I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 8/10; Performance = 8/10; Production = 9/10; CD length = 10/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 8.4 ("4 stars")
Live performance with energy.......2006-01-31
I'm sorry that I won't get the chance to see Karnataka live, but this CD is the next best thing. Rachel Jones's voice is just as beautiful live as it is on studio tracks, and even though the band sounds very highly produced on their albums, the live songs retain all the energy and full, rich sound I loved from their album. It's likely that only fans will buy this album, but I agree with a previous review that if you want to introduce someone to the band, this excellent compilation of their best songs is a good way to do it.
Simply a precious jewel.............2005-01-15
Very few times I take my time for doing musical reviews but in the case of STRANGE BAHAVIOUR is a must to do so. If you have ever heard previous KARNATAKA'S works and you thought that they were good.....please disregard that idea. KARNATAKA is a supergroup that performs 1,000 better live. The album is composed of two fantastic CD'S. Rachel Jones is one of the best female vocalist today and the duets with Annie Marie Helder are simply marvelous...Just listen to TALK TO ME, a tremendous song that describes the unique encounter of any men or women with the Lord Jesus or The right time.....is amazing!!!!! At stage, Edwards at the keybords, Davis guitar, Jones and Griffiths performances show that this people really can play almost to perfection.....Without any doubt, this is the best album that I heard in 2004.....simply a PERFECT JEWEL!!!!!!!

Album Description
The rushing pulse of the thunderous drumming of South India. The mellifluous voice of R.A. Ramamani, the clarinet bending and sliding into a foreign world of sound. This is a mixture of global virtuosity, celebrating wildness in music and wilderness in the world.
File under: world music, global fusion, improvisation with a groove.
The CD includes a sixteen-page booklet with a detailed essay on the unique story behind the recording, and how music can make a difference in the environmental crisis.
The first three pieces are from the classical South Indian repertoire of the Karnataka College of Percussion. The second two present Rothenberg's own mixture of spoken word, electronics, ghatam rhythms and clarinet explorations. The final four pieces represent the heat of the musical melange, featuring a blend of rehearsal takes and live cuts from the standing-room only concert at the great hall of the Bangalore Hotel.
