2 out of 5 stars Very uneven.......2004-06-24

These sessions offer an unsavory combination of well-executed Weavers-like harmonies and rollicking if simplistic accompanyment, intermingled with lapses into overstylized and musically tasteless excesses, especially on solo parts. Plane Wreck at Los Gatos is well done. Fans of Judy Henske may want to get this disc given how little material she's recorded over the years (although most is now in print for the first time in decades). Overall, though, a disappointment.

2 out of 5 stars He should've stayed with the Kingston Trio.......2003-04-20

It's not a bad album, had to play it a few times to appreciate it. Not up to par with Guards work with the Kingston Trio, it's different, which it apparently was meant to be.
Terrible cover photo.

2 out of 5 stars Noble Experiment.......2003-01-07

This group was hastily put together so Dave Guard could fulfill his contract with Capitol Records, and it shows. For one thing, Judy Henske's strident voice is an acquired taste which I must admit I never acquired. However, the groups' rendition of the classic good-bye song "Isa Lei," with nothing but Buck Wheat's bass for back-up, is intensely moving. And Guard's banjo work on "Bonnie Ship, The Diamond" is excellent.

3 out of 5 stars They never quite gelled as a group - good though.......2002-03-01

At the height of the Folk Scare, the Kingston Trio was the number one pop-folk group in the country and heard frequently on top 40 radio. Success of course led to a life of turing and sitting around hotel rooms learning how to hate each other
When Dave Guard left that group he took along the bassest (never credited, but the on stage and records "fourth" menber of the trio.
Guard put together the Whiskeyhill Singers and recorded this album in pretty quick order - then that group broke up too leaving this record orphaned in the process. It didn't sell very well and ex-members of the group tended to make rather uncomplimentary comments about it - and Guard.
The album is not bad. It is certainly not great but if you tastes run toward the Kingston Trio, The Chad Mitchell Trio, The Limelighters, etc you will probably enjoy the album. Ther is one genuine masterpiece on it - "Nobody knows You When You're Down and Out", sung by Judy Henske. If you never listen to the rest of the album you will have paid a fair price for this one cut.

5 out of 5 stars OK, so I'm biased............2001-08-07

I was 15 when this album was first released. I wore out that first copy quickly, and have subsequently gone through several others. Listening to this CD issue is like hearing it for the first time - a bright, brilliant, loving transfer. The album was cititcized for its eclectic selections. Balderdash. Eclectic in those days meant not Top 40. Of course not - it's a work of well programmed art-listenable, vibrant. These talented folk may have shot themselves in the commercial foot, but Dave Guard, Cyrus Faryar, Buck Wheat, and the grand Miss Judy Henske gave us a seminal album too long unavailable.

Album Description

"This trio has the same drive and tight vocal harmonies for which the group is famous ... the result is still one fine folk group." -KNOXVILLE NEWS

A new set from the world's biggest-selling folk group of fifties & sixties, Rare Masters Series features two discs: Kingston Trio Live at The Crazy Horse and Dave Guard - Up & In featuring original (now departed) founder Dave Guard. Through changing times, The Kingston Trio has remained popular for a simple reason - great songs that sound as good today as the first time you heard them! Over forty years after "Tom Dooley" shot to the top of the charts, the trio is still on the road thirty weeks out of the year, bringing back all the great memories and making new ones.
