Artists in a wide variety of styles use fresh and timeless metaphors, set to exquisite melodies, to address moving and touching aspects of the grief journey, with songs that sprang from their own experiences with all manner of early deaths: accidents, disease, SIDS and other medical emergencies, suicide, murder, war and terrorism. The losses of 9/11 are memorialized in 3 original and moving songs.

Two booklets contain detailed liner notes with song lyrics, a discography of the "source" albums and website contacts for further information about the artists and their music. 5 out of 5 stars Moving and Inspiring Memorial Songs.......2005-01-20

"Before Their Time, Vol. III" is the latest in the series of CDs containing songs written in memory of people who died young. I know, I know, that sounds morbid and depressing -- but it isn't. The three volumes (a total of 6 CDs) are moving and inspiring. While many genres of music are represented, it is the singer-songwriters (read "folkies") who dominate. From old-school heavyweights Tom Paxton and Joan Baez, to current heavyweights Anne Hills and David Mallett, to new-to-me Aoife Clancy and Kate Callahan, the songs and performances are varied, thought-provoking, and at times breathtaking. Producer Michael Whitman undertook this project as a labor of love, but we are all the beneficiaries. His web site (www.beforetheirtime.org) is worth a visit to learn more about the project. Regardless, the music speaks for itself, and to anyone who has known love.
