From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Almost as wonderful as the first.......2007-08-02

We bought Beethoven's Wig 1 and loved it. My kids (ages 5 and 9) really enjoy listening over and over. Number 2 is almost as good. All of the songs are amusing and a couple are very funny. The lyrics are clever and do help you become familiar with composers and their music. I like that the pieces are played again in the second half without the lyrics. I highly recommend it for kids who enjoy music.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15

Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the whole family.......2007-01-04

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Fun.......2006-03-13

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

5 out of 5 stars One is better but this is still awesome!! Gotta have it!.......2006-01-10

My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

3 out of 5 stars Yes And No.......2007-07-16

Donovan has always been my favorite recording artist, so it is easy for me to overlook whatever shortcomings he may have had. The truth is, he was partially responsible for his own demise. After his Epic albums, I never knew which Donovan was going to show-up. There was no continuity to any of his work. Pairing these two vastly different albums together is a perfect example of what I mean. Any young record buyer who really liked the kick of "7-Tease" ("Rock And Roll Souljer", "Salvation Stomp" and "Moon Rok") would instantaniously be disappointed by the "let's slow things down" approach on "Slow Down World". From "Open Road" onward, Donovan was as much a chameleon as anything else. He changed from album to album. It was this inconsistency that lead to his own decline in popularity. Longtime fans fell by the wayside, while younger record buyers were confused by all of his mood swings. As great as "7-Tease" is, I cannot recommend the second-half of this pairing to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Just Beautiful this Stuff is.......2006-07-20

Gotta say that I really love this disc and I play it a lot. It leads out with the rocking, "Rock and Roll Souljer" and slows right down with "Your Broken Heart." A normal musician couldn't make that transition without losing his listener for a bit, but Donovan was/is no normal musician. When he's good, he's great. "Ride-a-Mile" is just about my favorite Donovan song ever, and that's saying something from the man who recorded "Catch the Wind" and "Season of the Witch." Even the Nashville musicians work here. These guys are spot on, the arrangements perfect.

And to Pair "7-Tease" with "Slow Down World" on one disc is, in my humble opinion, nothing short of brilliant. it's just too bad they couldn't fit on the four extra songs that the UK version has on the end of "7-Tease," but I understand that there is only so much space on a CD and the material here just works so very well together. Heck, you don't even notice the transition from "Tease" to "World" so well do these two recordings blend. And I have to say, "Dark-Eyed blue Jean Angel" is another of my favorite Donovan songs, as is "Well-Known-Has-Been." There is an awful lot to like here. This is a disc any casual fan of Donovan's should own. This is a period in Donovan's career that is just outstanding and it should have been as big for him as his Mickey Most Period was, but sadly it wasn't. Still, you can get this stuff now, listen to it and enjoy it. I know I do.

5 out of 5 stars two forgotten classics on one CD.......2004-11-18

These are two of Donovan's best albums of the 70s. I consider them both better than either Cosmic Wheels or Essence to Essence. Maybe not as great as Open Road, but the styles are so different its hard to compare. 7-Tease is full of high energy songs as well as a couple of slower ballads. The backing players are excellent. Donovan's sensitivity and humanity are evident throughout. He obviously had an agenda, but it was a humane one that showed he cared about the world and the people in it. In my estimation, his message is a sincere one and he tries to live the principles he preaches. His songs should be heard. Sadness is lovely, but all the songs are good, some humorous, others with biting political comment and spiritual and ecological overtones. Slow Down World is mostly mellow with light percussion, and with more subdued ornamentation (save for the funky horns on Well-Known Has-Been). Again, the backing musicians are excellent, Lyrically, Donovan was too critical of himself on WKHB, but it ends on an optimistic note. The title track is poignant, and its simple but important lyric rightly predicts the destructive spiral humans are spinning down through greed and running the rat race. Liberation Rag celebrates femininity; Dark-eyed Blue Jean Angel is a love song to Linda. Cryin' Shame and Children of the World discuss a litany of troubles in today's world, and Mountain offers solace with beautiful words from Derroll Adams. My favorite track is Black Widow, for its delectable sensuality (and I like spiders). Anyone with more than a passing interest in Donovan should find this CD delightful, and you get two albums for the price of one. As someone who thoroughly enjoys Donovan's music, I recommend this wholeheartedly to anyone with an open mind and a giving heart.

5 out of 5 stars Donovan's Finest Works.......2004-05-04

Commercially, both albums sold poorly, but "Slow Down World" is not only my favorite Donovan album, it is in my all time top 10.
7-Tease from '74 was a preview of Slow Down- and it too is awesome. This release is very nice, artwork, etc.
It is LONG AWAITED and VERY COOL!!!
Highlight: "A WELL KNOWN HAS BEEN"

5 out of 5 stars All Things Beautiful.......2007-07-16

This is a great album, especially with the four bonus tracks. However, having said that, this is not a great Donovan album. Truth be told, he is reinventing himself once again. Why Don thought it was necessary or even possible is beyond me. In fact, I think he alienated his fan base with his continue growth as an artist. This is a beautifully performed album with a wide variety of musical styles, but it is not what Donovan is known for. You may be in awe of his versatility, but it will become apparent that he is actually working against his strengths. Sax-driven rockers, tinkling pianos, ragtime horns, and big band swing is not what brought him to the party. Five songs in, you finally get what you have been waiting for. "Ride-A-Mile" (my favorite song) and "Sadness" bring the old Donovan to light. He continues on with "Love Of My Life" and a couple of political commentaries that hit their marks. But, what gives this version of "7-Tease" added strength is the inclusion of two of the greatest bonus tracks ever, "Age Of Treason" (a biographical look back) and "What The Soul Desires". It concludes the album on a high note and gives it a new perspective. Like I said, this is a great album, but it is not what the average Donovan fan is expecting. I like change, but I am not sure that Donovan needed to embrace it with such sadness when he was "gonna ride on down the line". In some ways, I wish he had refused to change at all. We need him now more than ever.
